09/15/2004 - Brewers (Wes O.) vs. Giants (Tomko & Bonds)

batman

back to the stuff about Barry possibly passing Hank, here are Barry's thoughts on the matter:

Hank blazed the trail in that respect for me, but Jackie Robinson blazed it for all of us. Hank was the last crusader from the old Negro Leagues, a real pioneer. It was Jackie and Hank and Willie Mays. They're our pioneers as African-Americans. They were No. 1. They will always be No. 1 because they're the people who changed the game and allowed it to be as diverse as it is today.

So matter what I do, in my mind, they will be No. 1. Always. That's part of history, like the first American president. Hopefully, I will just be a part of baseball history. But I won't be the first one, no matter whether I wind up hitting more home runs and passing Hank statistically.

nice sentiments, I think.

"That's 'cause he's scared out of his mind. The poor guy looked like he was almost trembling."

No kidding. And in the dugout after his (near-customary) implosion inning he still looked freaked out. In these pre-implosion innings he looks all right - which makes the bad ones more painful to watch, and presumably worse to experience.

You'd think the Brewers' baseball minds could figure out a way to make use of Wes' good innings while averting the implosions.

At least Obie's not the answer to the "700 club" trivia question. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

They should just use De La Rosa and Hendrickson as "buddies" with Obermueller. Four or five innings of good baseball is valuable... it's like a really good long relief pitcher

Batman, Al and I have long said that we think Kieschnick would be an interesting option as a starter or in a piggyback-type situation. It would guarantee Kiesch one or two at bats, which could possibly best utilize him. So it depends on what we want to do with Brooks...setup or long man.

I wonder if a sports psychologist could help Wes cope with this little (well, ok... big) hurdle he's facing. It doesn't seem like it's a physical thing, at least not in the sense that he loses velocity or movement after 80 or so pitches. He just loses his composure and confidence and looks nervous... it's like he says to himself...

OMG OMG OMG I'm almost going to have a quality start WOOOOO HOOOO but don't blow it OMG OMG OMG I'm going to blow it and then I'm going to lose my job OMG OMG OMG

... or something like that. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

In other news, it looks like Bonds will get one more and maybe two more plate appearances. Once again, he'll be leading off... that's three of his first four (only four, probably) plate appearances coming to leadoff an inning. Good job, Brewers.

According to the AP, Yost has told pitchers to use common sense.

Quote:
``My whole philosophy is if he's going to hurt you to a point where you can't recover, then you can't pitch to him,'' Yost said. ``Just let common sense rule. In reality, 6.25 times out of 10, he's going to make an out. Statistics say that.''

Translation: Walk him if you must - otherwise challeneg him - more often than not, he will make an out. Preferably two.

A couple of responses to things posted earlier:

RoCo--I agree. History is great, but the fans have gotta give the kid a break. He's out there, heart-a-thumpin' trying NOT to give up #700 and is getting abused by the home town crowd. In the end, Bonds swung and made an out. Good work Pedro.

As for Bonds playing on Thursday, ESPN's Bottom Line cited Alou as saying Bonds will continue playing during the 700 chase. I'm sure some higher powers may have gotten in his ear, but it is mid-September and the Giants are barely ahead in the wild card, so I see no reason why he wouldn't play.

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

actually, hasn't he only made an out 5.7 times out of 10 in his career?
