09/15/2004 - Brewers (Wes O.) vs. Giants (Tomko & Bonds)

Last night was fun, if ultimately unsatisfying. Tonight Barry will again go for #700, this time against Wes Obermueller. Sporting a 6.42 ERA, Obermueller has faced 467 batters this season and allowed 14 home runs, a ratio of about one longball every 33 batters. That's not bad, but opposing hitters are batting .303/.360/.510 or an 869 OPS against Obie, or almost exactly the line Jose Guillen is producing in Anaheim (.303/.360/.515, 875 OPS). In other words, when Obie is on the mound the opposing team, pitchers included, become hitters of Guillen's caliber. And that's pretty good... for the hitters, not Wes Obermueller.

I'm fighting through a nasty illness, so no game for me tonight. I encourage anyone "on the fence" to head out to Miller Park, though... the Brewers are doing a nice job with their fandemonium thing and seeing the stadium rise to its collective feet when Barry steps to the plate is something to behold. It really is quite an awesome experience, something I won't soon forget even though he didn't go yard.

Anyway, that's all I got. If you won't be at MP, be here or be square... 6:35 PM CDT is the first pitch, cheese sandwiches will be served, and you get to see Wes Obermueller. What could be better?

Thanks davego, I appreciate it. I just got some nice new antiobiotics and so hopefully I'll be back at 'em soon.

Remember, cheese sandwiches and Wes Obermueller tonight at 6:35. We need to channel the spirit of the extra-innings win in Anaheim. Fun will be had by all.

Be there.

Good luck CRicks...hope you get #700! I, however, will be sitting through a fascinating class on educational philosophyhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif ...I hate night classes...most are pointless, and they make me miss Brewers games two nigths a week. But, if I want to get my masters I have to sit through them right? Go Crew!

It's gonna happen tonight. Wes will always have that to tell the kids about.
"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

The first baseball game I ever attended was June 27, 1958 (I was 5 years old). That night Hammerin Hank belted number 98 of his career off Sandy Koufax no less.

I was in attendence again in July 1976 when Aaron hit #754 (that's correct, 754, his next to last). That was a walkoff game winner against the Texas Rangers on a Sunday afternoon. Aaron came back for a curtain call after that one and he mentions it in his book "I Had a Hammer" as being much more memorable than his last one.

I will be sad if Bonds passes Henry.

Me too. I started going to Braves games in 1956 and Henry was my favorite growing up. Notice how we old timers still call him Henry like Earl and Blaine always did.

It saddens me more that the offensive era, smaller parks and possible roids use(I'll wait till its proven to remove the possible) made it easier for Barry. But that's life.

The other thing that bothers me is that younger people think of Henry primarily as a home run hitter and not the 5 tool player we got to see in Milwaukee. His 76% stolen base rate is the same as Mays but because it wasn't a running era and Braves managers didn't run him much he had very few attempts until the 60s when Maury Wills made stealing fashionable. He wound up with about 2/3 of Mays steal numbers.

I disagree with this. Barry is much like Hank in that he never had the 50 home run season (well, Barry has had one now). He was much more than a power hitter too.

His 76% stolen base rate is the same as Mays

and Barry has stolen 500+ at a 78% rate.

Hank was great and is my favorite historical player, but Barry is better (though it kind of pains me to admit).

Let's go team.

I'm pretty sure that Gary Bennett just said that the rest of the league will follow Wes Obermueller if/when Wes gets Barry Bonds out.

Um, right.

1-2-3 for Obermueller, 1-2-3 for Tomko.

Bonds is next.

Make yourself a cheese sandwich and join the fun. No sucky game thread tonight... bring your A game.

Question of the Night:

In what inning, and against what pitcher, and in what game... will Bonds hit 700?

I'll take the first inning, against Obermueller, tonight.

That means in like 2 minutes.

Wow... missed it by [...........] that much.

I was pretty close. So I lose the Question of the Night game... who wants to take a stab? Post your prediction and the winner gets to be King for a Day (or something like that).

Good job by Mr. Obermueller so far. Bonds will now be leading off the inning in his first two plate appearances... that's how it's s'posed to work, no?

Branyan reaching base on a ball he fouled off his foot is pretty funny. Ed Rapuano has missed two obvious calls already, but both went the way of the Crew... the Branyan play, and the Obermueller (non-) balk. Good karma, hopefully.

Looks like a nice-sized crowd again. Maybe 30k, although it is hard to tell from the TV.
