I forgot about Brett Whiteside, but I'm sorta surprised he's still in Arizona. Thought he would have been in Helena. Same with Charlie Iacono... he and Goetz were both left down in Arizona last year, and I thought they would have come up together this year. Iacono must need some major bat work.

Unfortunately, Iacono and Goetz at their age are beginning to look like roster filler type guys, unless they freak out and start dominating(which would be really nice and welcome). Whiteside at AZ seems OK to me, especially if he uses that time there to grow his game(he'll get plenty of practice blocking balls in the dirt with all those 17 and 18 year old pitchers). 2 college draftee catchers + Snidjers at Helena lets Whiteside stay there and grow at nice comfortable pace. Catchers often seem to take a while.

Express Split Series With 9-3 Win Over Sounds

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas ? The Nashville Sounds fell to the Round Rock Express by a 9-3 count on Tuesday evening at The Dell Diamond in the finale of a four-game series.

 

With the win, Round rock gained a series split against the Sounds (45-33).

 

The Nashville loss combined with an Iowa win dropped the Sounds a half-game behind the Cubs in the PCL American Conference Northern Division as the teams flip-flopped first and second place for the third time in the last four days.

 

The game began at 8:39 p.m. after a one hour and thirty-four minute rain delay.

 

Round Rock took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Sounds starter Adam Pettyjohn. Jason Lane plated Mike Rodriguez with the game?s first run on a sacrifice fly. The Express added a second run in unearned fashion following a two-out fielding error by Nashville leftfielder Drew Anderson.

 

The Sounds got a run back in the second in unearned fashion when Joe Dillon (2-for-4) scored on an Anderson double-play groundout.

 

Express outfielder Jason Lane extended the home club?s lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when he belted Pettyjohn?s first offering of the inning over the center field wall for his fourth home run of the season.

 

Round Rock starting pitcher Chan Ho Park helped his own cause later in the frame when he delivered a two-out, two-run single to push the lead to 5-1.

 

Nashville rallied against the Express bullpen in the top of the eighth to pull within a pair of runs at 5-3 on Dillon?s two-out, two-run single to left off Travis Driskill.

Round Rock responded immediately, however, by plating four runs of their own against Luther Hackman in the bottom half of the frame to extend the lead to a comfortable 9-3. Cody Ransom belted a two-run homer to left, the veteran?s 11th jack of the year, before two more Express runs scored later in the inning on a pair of Hackman wild pitches.

 

Park (5-6) defeated the Sounds for the second time this season by allowing one unearned run on three hits over seven innings. He walked one batter while striking out five.

 

Pettyjohn (3-2) had his three-start winning streak snapped after working his shortest outing as a Sound. The left-hander lasted only four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in taking the loss.

 

Anderson doubled in the fifth inning for Nashville to extend his longest hitting streak of the season to seven games.

 

The Sounds travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico on Wednesday to complete their road trip with a three-game series against the Isotopes (AAA-Marlins). Nashville has won five of the previous eight meetings between the clubs this season.

 

Right-hander R.A. Dickey (5-4, 5.00) will start Wednesday?s 8:05 p.m. CT series opener for the Sounds. Albuquerque will counter with right-hander Daniel Barone (2-0, 1.93).

Cosme Carries Chattanooga to Victory

 

Caonabo Cosme collected four hits, including a home run, scored three times and knocked in three to power Chattanooga to a 10-1 win over Huntsville Tuesday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts improved to 7-2 in the second half of the season and 36-43 overall, while the Stars fell to 3-6 in the second half and 40-37 overall in suffering their second worst defeat of the season. The Stars were held to three runs or less for a 13th time in the last 15 games and held to six hits or fewer for an 12th time in the last 17 contests.

 

Hernan Iribarren produced the home side?s only run with a leadoff home run in the first inning against Johnny Cueto, who was making his double-A debut. The right-hander settled down and wound up retiring a dozen in a row after a one-out single by Alcides Escobar in the second inning before a Steve Sollmann double in the sixth. He was taken out after a leadoff walk to Adam Heether and a Steve Moss single to open the seventh. Tyler Pelland got Escobar to ground into a double play to squelch any potential rally and tossed two scoreless frames in relief. Cueto, the Reds' fourth rated prospect according to Baseball America, was charged with a run on six hits, while walking two and fanning six.

 

Cosme hit a two-run home run in the second to give the visitors the lead for good and knocked in a run with a bases loaded single in the fourth to make it 3-1 before Cueto followed with the decisive blow in the game, a three-run double that extended the Lookouts advantage to 6-1. Thurman was charged with six runs on seven hits over four frames and suffered the loss to drop to 2-5. He has allowed 17 runs on 21 hits over 14 innings in his four starts.

 

Chattanooga added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth and ninth innings and has scored in five frames in each of the last two games en route to outscoring the Stars 20-1. Jay Bruce, Enrique Cruz and Luis Bolivar contributed two hits in the 14-hit attack.

Maybin, Mendez power Tigers

 

Cameron Maybin and Rafael Mendez smacked three-run homers as Lakeland routed visiting Brevard County, 10-2, on Tuesday.

 

Maybin's eighth homer of the year in the fourth inning erased a 1-0 deficit, driving in William Rhymes and Maxwell Leon. Mendez's first homer with Wilkin Ramirez and Justin Justice aboard in the eighth capped the scoring for the Flying Tigers (3-2).

 

Lakeland starter Burke Badenhop (7-5) yielded two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking three over six innings to pick up the win. Brendan Wise gave up one hit in two shutout innings.

 

The Manatees' Mat Gamel went 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. The third baseman is hitting .441 during that stretch (38-for-86).

POWER OFFENSE SILENCED BY AUGUSTA

 

The Augusta GreenJackets scored five times in the first inning of Tuesday night?s game at Lake Olmstead Stadium and they shutout the West Virginia Power for the second night in row, taking game two of the series 7-0.

 

Bobby Felmy and Tyler Graham both hit RBI singles in the first inning before Juan Jean cleared the bases with a three-run single to cap off the five-run frame, and knocked Power starter Jeremy Jeffress out of the contest.

 

The GreenJackets scored two more times in the contest on RBI singles from Brett Pill in the fourth and the sixth. West Virginia has not scored a run since the third inning of Sunday?s game against the Kannapolis Intimidators, putting them on a 24 inning scoreless slump.

 

Augusta starter Ben Snyder retired the first ten batters he faced before walking Brent Brewer on four pitches in the fourth inning, and he had a no hitter going through four and a third until Andy Bouchie ripped a one-out single in the fifth.

 

Snyder (9-2) pitched six scoreless innings, allowed two hits and struck out four to get the victory while Jeffress (4-1) was tagged with the loss after he allowed five runs on four hits over two thirds of the first inning. The trio of D.J. Lidyard, Shawn Ferguson and J.T. King held the GreenJackets to just two runs on six hits over seven and a third innings of relief.

 

The Power fell to 50-24 overall and 2-4 in the second half, and the GreenJackets improved to 55-21 overall and 5-1 in the second half with the win. Jimmy Mojica ripped a pair of singles and was the only Power player with a multi-hit game.

 

The Power will continue the four game series against the GreenJackets Wednesday night. The Power will start left hander Brae Wright (5-4, 6.43) and Augusta will start right hander Adam Cowart (9-3, 2.18). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

This Augusta pitching staff has been absolutely amazing all season -- historically amazing; Brent Brewer's two walks give him 29 in 290 AB's, meeting the 10-to-1 ratio often seen as reasonably attainable -- he's also K'd 92 times, still 19 years old, he'll probably repeat the first half of next year...

Jackets jump on Jeffress

West Virginia's Jeremy Jeffress took the mound Tuesday as one of the South Atlantic League's hottest pitchers - and the No. 4-rated prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

 

With a fastball that has hit 102 mph on the radar gun, the South Boston, Va., native has drawn comparisons to Dwight Gooden. He hadn't given up a run in his previous four starts and was carrying a 1.14 ERA.

 

The Augusta GreenJackets didn't seem impressed, however, and Augusta starter Ben Snyder showed the 19-year-old how to pitch at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

 

The GreenJackets scored five runs in the first inning off Jeffress, who exited after recording only two outs. Snyder won his fifth consecutive start for Augusta in a 7-0 victory over the Power.

 

"One of the things we really like about our guys is that they're sort of up for the challenge, and that counts for a whole lot," Augusta coach Andy Skeels said. "Their attitude is, 'Let's get in the ring and see how it goes.'"

 

For the second night in a row, Augusta's league-best pitching staff silenced West Virginia's league-best lineup, which entered with a .302 average.

 

The GreenJackets blanked the Power for the second consecutive game en route to their minor league-leading 15th shutout.

 

"It's pretty impressive when you can shut out the best-hitting team in the league. And two in a row like that is really nice," said Bert Bradley, the San Francisco Giants' coordinator of minor league pitching. "It's more than impressive what they've done (this season). You don't see it very often."

 

Snyder, who didn't allow a hit until the fifth, gave up just three in six shutout innings. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 2.06.

 

Relievers Ryan Shaver and David Newton combined to pitch the final three innings to preserve the shutout.

 

"No one wants to give up a run. The relievers don't want to give up the shutout either," Snyder said.

 

Recently-acquired infielder Juan Jean collected three RBI on a single to cap Augusta's five-run first, and Bobby Felmy and Brett Pill each had two hits.

 

The GreenJackets have won 14 consecutive home games and improved to 31-6 at Lake Olmstead Stadium, increasing the best home -field advantage in baseball, winning at a clip of .837.

 

"It's a pitcher's park. It plays bigger than the numbers on the wall," Snyder said. "And Augusta's the hottest, thickest, muggiest place in the world, so we don't go out and try to smash home runs. We just know how to play at our home park."

 

Augusta (55-21, 5-1) has won five of six to open the second half and is 23-5 since May 26.

 

The Power (50-24, 2-4) had only been shut out twice before this series.

 

The GreenJackets sent Jeffress to the showers after eight batters in the first, trailing 5-0.

 

Felmy and Tyler Graham each singled in a run, and Jean drove in three with a bases-loaded single. Burriss also singled in the inning, and Jeffress didn't help himself with two walks.

 

The GreenJackets added another run in the fourth off reliever D.J. Lidyard. Marcus Sanders singled and scored on Pill's RBI hit to right to make it 6-0.

 

Pill, the team's RBI leader, drove in another run in the sixth for a 7-0 score.

 

Snyder, meanwhile, was on cruise control. He sat down West Virginia's first 10 hitters.

 

Shaver worked two scoreless relief innings and Newton pitched the ninth.

Helena wins back-to-back

 

Brewer starter Jose Garcia turned in a solid performance, shutting down the Osprey bats for the second time this season as Helena won its second straight game over Missoula. Garcia tossed seven innings of two-hit, two-run ball for Helena and the Brewer bats backed him to win 8-4. With the win Garica becomes the first Brewer pitcher to record two wins.

 

Although Garcia provided Helena with a quality start it was the Osprey who led early, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Connor Janes brought home the run on an RBI groundout. Brewer Caleb Gindl gave Helena the lead when he extended his hitting streak to eight games on a two-out, two-run single in the third inning. Helena led 2-1 after three innings.

 

Helena added three more runs to its lead in its next-at bat. Kurt Crowell and David Fonseca drove in the runs on respective run-scoring singles. In the fifth inning Gindl continued his tear by leading off with a double; Jonathan Lucroy drove him home with a single to increase the lead to 6-1.

 

Osprey hitter Peter Clifford hit a home run off Garcia in the sixth inning to bring the Missoula deficit back to four. Helena, however, pushed two more across in the bottom half of the sixth. The Osprey later scored two runs in the ninth off Corey Frerichs, but could pull no closer as the Brewers prevailed 8-4.

 

Crowell led the Brewers with three hits in five at-bats while Gindl finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Others with multi-hit games included Lee Haydel, Eric Fryer, and Curt Rindal. By the end of the game Helena raised its team batting average 15 points to .256.

 

Helena will look for a series sweep Wednesday when the Brewers play host to the Osprey at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Brewers bruise Osprey

Playing the Missoula Osprey for the fifth time since the season started, the Helena Brewers seemed to have figured out their opponent pretty well.

 

Pitcher Jose Garcia threw seven innings, giving up just two runs, while the Brewers backed him up with 13 hits to beat the Osprey 8-4 Tuesday at Kindrick Legion field.

 

Helena is now 4-1 against Missoula (4-4 overall) and will play them three more times before the month?s end.

 

?Once you start seeing hitters day in and day out in six games (including today?s game) over a short period of time you get an idea, you know what their tendencies are,? said Brewers manager Jeff Isom. ?We?re trying to pitch to what we see will get them out.?

 

And Garcia was accomplishing that pretty well. Though his first pitch hit Eli Rumler, Garcia was thrown a rosin bag to improve his grip and it paid dividends for the right hander. He gave up just two hits while walking one and striking out five.

 

His lone walk to Andrew Fie in the second led to the Osprey?s first score. Fie stole second before advancing on a ground out by Chance Wheeless, then came home on another ground out by Connor Janes.

 

Down by one, the Brewers came around the next inning and began peppering Missoula pitcher Jason Durst.

 

Curt Rindal and Lee Haydel would both score after singling as the Brewers smacked four hits in the inning. Helena kept up the hitting as Durst began to struggle. He hit lead-off batter Eric Newton to start the fourth then gave up consecutive shots to Eric Fryer and Kurt Crowell, all three of which scored.

 

Missoula failed to answer while Helena?s Caleb Gindl continued his strong performance at the plate. The right fielder cracked a triple to start the bottom of the fifth and scored on a blooper by Jonathan Lucroy.

 

Gindl leads the team with 13 hits after going 2-for-4 on Tuesday with three RBI and now has an average of .433.

 

Kurt Crowell led the Brewers in his second game of the season. He went 3-for-5 and now sports an average of .500.

 

?We struggled early on swinging the bats and now all of a sudden these guys have had a few games under their belt,? Isom said.

 

After being shut out for three innings, the Osprey got a quick blast from Pete Clifford. He hit a solo home run over the left-field wall to bring the score to 6-2 in the top of the sixth.

 

?That?s part of the game, that?s part of pitching,? said Garcia, who was able to shake it off to get the final two outs of the inning.

 

His teammates reacted with their final two runs in the bottom of the inning. Lee Haydel smacked a line-drive double down third base to bring home Curt Rindal. David Fonseca would also score after bunting and reaching on an error.

 

Durst received the loss after giving up 10 hits and six runs over five innings. He struck out three. Josh Blake replaced him in the sixth and gave up two runs over two innings. Luke Prihoda came in to finish the final inning and walked away with two strike outs.

 

Corey Frerichs took Garcia?s place on the mound in the eighth and ended with four hits and two runs after Sean Coughlin and Andrew Fie scored in the ninth.

 

Garcia is now 2-0 on the season with a 1.93 ERA.

 

He said there was no new plan when facing the Osprey for a second time.

 

?I felt strong,? he said. ?I was working on locating my pitches.?

I was at the Power game at Augusta last night. Here are a few completely amateur impressions:

 

1) Jeffress really did not get hit very hard. The first out he recorded and the three-run single (more on that in a bit) were the hardest hit balls. He did not seem to have very good control, though: lots of long counts and hitters' counts. He IS just 19, of course, and the Greenjackets are very good and very experienced--lots of 22- and 23-year-old players. I think this difference in experience was evident last night.

 

2) Jeffress really seemed rattled by baserunners. After the first hitter reached on a vary slow roller to right and then stole second, Jeffress slowed waaay down and spent more time looking at second base than at home plate. And since the Greenjackets had baserunners virtually the whole time he pitched, he just never seemed comfortable.

 

3) I was very surprised at how quickly the Power had the bullpen up. Somebody must have seen something wrong.

 

4) I was quite disappointed in Charlie Fermaint's play in center. The three-run single occurred because Fermaint trotted to the ball and then never seemed to look at the runner from first. When Fermaint lobbed the ball to Holmberg at second, the runner just kept on going. Later, a single turned into a double when Fermaint and Mojica in left could not decide who would stop the ball from rolling.

 

5) As the box score tells, it was a pretty dull game. But the weather was pleasant (by Augusta-in-summer standards), and I got to spend 2.5 hours explaining baseball to my 5-year-old daughter, so all was well.
