09/20/2004 - Brewers (De La Rosa) vs. Cardinals (Morris)

batman

Stop diving into first-base, Brady! Have you learned nothing from Junior Spivey? It doesn't get you there faster, and you're going to get hurt... AND Nedley doesn't condone the practice. STOP!

Thank you,

I am pretty impressed with Nedley game day roster management. Now every position play has been onto the field. This enables Krynzel to watch all of thse professionals ply their trade. I cannot imagine how great it must be for Dave to learn, learn, learn. In 6 or 7 years, when Dave has learned all he can from the Bennetts and Clarks he will be ready to have a go at playing on the field.

By the way. Dave did a great job on my shoes. He doesnt always just sit there. He must have had a lot of practice on the other guys shoes.

Nedley you are master. How many outstanding defensive center fielders are around that can clean shoes wonderfully. I am sure other managers do not see the value in having the young guys clean shoes and watch a few thousand games before they break into the lineup.

Thanks Ned. You are a September master.

Dan Kolb struggled? Surprising, considering his workload of late.

OK,

I'm frustrated because I *paid* to attend this game! I had the drive back to Madison to spend pondering it and here are my thoughts:

- How is it that the only Brewers pitchers to actually throw more strikes than balls were the ones who gave up the most runs? (even though Viz's was unearned)

- In a crowd of 14,213, why were there more fans from Cardinal Nation?

- Why does every Brewers game now feature at least one critical implosion? If it's not hitting, it's starting pitching; if it's not starting pitching, it's the bullpen; if not the bullpen, then it's errors. If none of those, it must be hitting. We could have a pool to guess what's going to suck each game.

- On the way out of the park, I predicted that the Brewers will be lucky to reach 63 wins. Since then I have decided that they might get one from Arizona in next week's Futility Series. Just because the D-backs can't catch Milwaukee doesn't mean they can't sweep!

Finally, I made a bit of peace with the evening by realizing that a scene from a Simpsons episode is a microcosm of the 2004 Brewers season.

It's the one where Homer tries to stop Bart from skateboarding over Springfield Gorge and instead gets himself airborne on the board. He begins to think, hey, I think I can get across, and immediately after thinking that, he starts to plunge, hitting every sharp rock on the gorge as he tumbles. Even the skateboard lands on him. He is rescued and put in an ambulance, but as the ambulance leaves it hits a tree, the back doors open, the gurney carrying Homer falls out and he goes down the gorge again.

That is what this season feels like to me - except there was no temporary ambulance rescue.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I find this to be very depressing. It makes me sad. Someday before I die I hope I get to see the Brewers celebrating in their or someone else's park.

"The Cardinals came to Milwaukee ready to party.

They packed up more than 20 cases of champagne and boxes of championship hats and T-shirts and had the team's clubhouse attendants drive it all up to Miller Park in two pickup trucks that arrived 45 minutes before Monday's game.

After Trent Durrington made the final out, the Cardinals rushed out of their dugout and lined up to congratulate each other.

La Russa stood at the end of the line and hugged the players before they ducked into the tunnel to the clubhouse and the waiting tubs of champagne and beer.

On the field they were subdued, but once they got in the locker room, the party began. Wearing division championship hats and T-shirts that sat locked up for two days like the champagne, they sprayed each other and even a few club officials and their wives who were trying to stay out of the way.

The celebration even extended out into Miller Park. Eight Cardinals players went into the empty stands near the mascot's home run slide. A few hardy ones even slid down the slide before stopping for a group picture."

Ah, I didn't realize this win clinched the "real" division title (as opposed to backdoor given the Cubs' loss). I'd been watching the mini-Cardinal Nation thinking, OK, folks, so 97 wins just isn't enough?

To their credit, they were not thuggish like their Cub counterparts. They were numerous, though, for the total crowd size. There were 19 people in our section last night: 8 obviously for the Brewers, 8 for Cards, 3 sat so silently all night that we couldn't tell.

Sliding down our slide, though? That is a surprise, from a liability standpoint at least. Was it actually sanctioned? Either way, I'm glad we cut out promptly at the game's end, because I didn't need to see that.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
