A peek at Ned's Nightly Journal:

Great game today the guys battled and battled and we won because we outbattled the Royals. Little Ben struggled with his location but battled his way through 2 innings and inspired the rest of the team to win. Russell Branyon had an ok game, he was 3 for 3 off of a few "major league" pitchers in Lima and Tankersly. I wonder what Wes could do against similar pitching since he was so successful against the infinitely superior pitching of the Rockies including Jamey Wright. I'd like to get Russell some more AB against real pitching to see if he doesn't strike out so much, but I can't afford for Wes to stagnate with the Regular Season approaching. It's hard to see how Russell really fits in with this team as a regular because he just doesn't battle on every AB like Wes.......

okay, so now I'm getting a bit worried about Hendrickson. Not too worried, just a bit worried

----

again, this just my opinion, but you should be worrying, as Lil Ben doesnt quite have the stuff to be a successful ML pitcher. AAA is one thing, facing the best of the best is another, and this is just spring training, he isnt facing the Albert Pujols of the world.

But again, its still early, but there is a reason I have Glover, or possibly Obermeller(ugh) making the team as the 5th starter over Ben, but it will be promoted to us as him needing regular work on April due to the off days.

Hope Im wrong, but I just dont think his stuff is good enough, his curve moves well, but it doesnt have nearly the bite that Sheets' does.

Doug Davis didn't have very good stuff either. I do see your point though and think it's going to take some time for Hendrickson to become an above average pitcher, if he does at all. He can't blow away the hitters so he's going to need to learn how to get guys out. I don't know if Ben will be able to 'learn' how to get guys out. Time will only tell.

Scary quote from today's wrapup from Adam McCalvy:

"This is Ben's third outing now, and he hasn't been lights-out in any of those outings," Melvin said. "He's got to step it up or that's where a guy like [Rick] Helling comes in."

A guy like Helling comes in..... and what? shows Ben what his career could look like if he doesn't start pitching well?

I'm not giving up on Ben. I just hope he gets it going. Not sure what happened today, but I wonder if he's still struggling at throwing his offspeed stuff for strikes. His heater has been fairly sharp, but that's about it. Plenty of time though

I can believe Melvin would say that. I would guess rookies do not get the luxury of "working" on pitches or whatever excuse/cliche is used there. Lil Ben needs to be lights out or find an appartment in Nashville. This is not the Brewers of 1993-2004. There are others with a lot higher ceilings than Lil Ben.

yeah, but Helling is not one of them (at least not at this stage in his career)! It's one thing if he said, "He's got to step it up or that's where a guy like Capellan comes in." but he didn't. He said Helling!

This is the same Helling who is 34 years old and had an ERA of 4.94 in AA last year! Then he went to AAA and had an ERA of 9.00 in 31 IP. His ERA for the year was 6.26, all in the minors. Oh yeah but that's just ERA. His WHIP in the minors last year? 1.68 His K:BB? 1.87 nothing great

Oh and he has a 7.5 ERA in ST so far (6 IP), with 2 BB, 1 K, 6 hits....need I go on? I don't care what he did in 1998 (7 years ago!)

You can't honestly say that Rick Helling right now has a higher ceiling than a 24 year old AAA Pitcher of the Year.

Did I say Helling has a heigher ceiling? No, all I am saying is there is a stop gap in place for a guy with a higher ceiling to pitch his way onto the club. There is no sense in watching Lil Ben's last shred of confidence get ripped apart at the major league level. If he isnt going to take that spot and dominate it, then Helling can keep the seat warm for a Capellan or Del La Rosa.

fair enough, I understand what you are saying, but if the spot is just being used as a "stop-gap" until JDLR or Capellan or whoever is ready, then why fill it with a 34 year old who was not in the majors last year and hasn't had any recent success (to include ST) and not with a 24 year old who just may find his way? I don't see any reason to believe a guy like Helling will win any more games the Lil' Ben right now (granted based on recent performances it doesn't look like either will win much right now). I just firmly believe that Ben has more potential to improve at this stage than Helling. And our #5 starter likely won't be the difference in our contending or not, so why not see if he has a future with the club?

Of course if JDLR or Capellan or (gulp) Wes O prove that they are more ready right now than either of them, then different story. GG is the wild card I guess.

this is great stuff. I'm sure his actual thought process isn't too far from that.

another great line. You guys were on fire, those 2 things alone made reading the thread worthwhile.
