04/10/05 - Brewers (Santos) @ Cubs (Maddux), 1:20 PM CT

squarepusher

Your Milwaukee Brewers lick their wounds as they take the first loss of the year in a woeful offensive display. Victor Santos takes the mound for his first start of the year, and has a 2.64 ERA against the Cubs. Of course, the vampire has a 8.71 ERA during the day, so all bets are off. Greg Maddux was shelled by lefties in his first start (with 11 left-handed hitters having a 1.500 OPS against him), but he's had the Brewers' number over the past 2 years, with the club only being able to hit .227 off him.

I'm not sure if anyone has had Tommy John surgery three times yet but Chad Fox is a prime candidate. You have to give him credit, though, or perhaps not, because he continues to throw the same slider that has already destroyed both his original UCL and the replacement.

Here's an old JS article about his injury history and his comebacks:

I also have been really impressed with JJ's plate discipline this year. It has looked real good for a young player, I think Darron and Bill were talking about that yesterday. I think we can pull off a big win today before heading home tomorrow.

I'll chime in with the lineups today. Hall is the only non-regular for either team.

 MILWAUKEE AT CHICAGO CUBS -- LINEUPS MILWAUKEE CHICAGO CUBS AVG HR RBI AVG HR RBI Brady Clark CF .143 0 2 Corey Patterson CF .333 0 2 Junior Spivey 2B .350 1 3 Todd Walker 2B .471 0 3 Lyle Overbay 1B .267 0 3 Nomar Garciaparra SS .174 0 3 Carlos Lee LF .278 1 5 Aramis Ramirez 3B .263 1 4 Geoff Jenkins RF .167 0 1 Jeromy Burnitz RF .318 1 2 Damian Miller C .429 0 0 Derrek Lee 1B .300 1 5 Russell Branyan 3B .364 0 3 Todd Hollandsworth LF .294 1 3 Bill Hall SS .000 0 0 Michael Barrett C .278 1 4 Victor Santos RHP .000 0 0 Greg Maddux RHP .000 0 0 (NO RECORD) (0-1, 9.00)

edit: Someone who doesn't watch the Crew often might look at Clark's .143 avg and think he's been terrible. But that .429 OBP out of the leadoff spot definitely says otherwise.

.J has shown such great plate discipline (has he even struck out yet)

Nope, 4 walks and 0 K's. He's on pace for 162 walks, no strikeouts, and 41 doubles. How sweet would that be? Dang sweet.

Part of the rationale for playing Hall other than giving him playing time might be that he is more likely to get ahold of a ball and jack it out of the park than Hardy. Maddux has been giving up more home runs as of late, so it might not hurt to take a gamble on Hall hitting the ball a long way.

I don't mind JJ getting a day off. Hall has been a good solider and hasn't complained about his lack of playing time and deserves a start here and there. I fully expect JJ to be in the game as a defensive replacement though if the brewers have a lead late.
