04/13/05 - Pirates (Fogg) @ Brewers (Capuano), 12:05 PM CT

squarepusher

Your Milwaukee Brewers look to take the rubber match from the Pirates today, as Chris Capuano locks up with Josh Fogg. Capuano struck out 7 in his first outing, but walked 3 and allowed 5 hits against the Cubs. He's been shelled by Pittsburgh in the past, sporting a 11.70 ERA in two starts. Fogg's a soft-tosser, but has had success against Milwaukee, going 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA. He was also successful in his first start this year, giving up only 1 run on 4 hits over 6.1 innings pitched..... of course, that was before he needed to face _the muscle_.

So far the pitching has been pretty good. Our bullpen has really surprised me. We haven't been blown out at all, and only one pitcher has really stymied us (Zambrano). I hope this trend continues...and Lee and Jenkins get their homerun strokes going!

I don't about you all, but I believe it's time for that vaunted 3-4-5 part of our lineup to get their butts in gear. Overbay, Lee and Jenkins have not strung togehter hits yet, and from what I see, no one is being very patient at the plate, except for maybe Overbay. Last night in the 9th, Lee swung at the first pitch he saw from a new pitcher, when we were down by 2. If not for Branyan and Spivey, there is a good chance this team would be 1-5. Middle of the lineup, lets get it going!!

As far as I see it we are 4-3 and our bats really haven't awakened yet. Lee, Jenkins, and Overbay have not really done anythgin to exciting yet and they are suppose to be our "meat". We've stayed in every game, with maybe the exception of the Zambrano game (because one run was about equal to 3 runs in that game). Some bats will wake up sooner or later. Damian and Russel will hit .270-.285 all year and we will be a much better team than last year. THAT IS as long as our bats awake up when there is a man sitting on 2nd Base AND we stop stealing at times when even a little league coach knows not to try and swipe one. Lets go crew......win this series!!!

Fogger and Capuano match up pretty well. The Bucs didn't exactly light it up last night, and they really haven't had a good record of Day Games after Night Games. Fogg picked up our first win. He's always going to be a fourth starter type, and has potential to be lit up. Averaging 10 win a year on this club means he's doing something right. I'd say we still have some pay back left in the tank. I see a high scoring event coming this afternoon. Advantage: Bucs

Obviously, this man is forgetting that one Mr. Russell Branyan will be in the lineup today. Mr. Branyan feeds on soft-tossing righties. I look for Branyan and Jenks to have big days today. Hopefully Cappy can get through 6 without too much damage.

stats are ave/obp/slg

Overbay .231/.412/.423

Lee .310/.382/.517

Jenkins .194/.242/.226

Small sample but just wanted to post these in response. You would like Overbay's average a little higher but it's pretty hard to complain with a .412 OBP and Lee is off to a good start. The real problem here is Jenkins obviously. He also has 8 K's in 31 ABs. I agree a K is no worse than any other out but it still is an out and I think his K rate is not a good sign. He needs to turn it around and fast.

Hey...another chance for my awesome prediction of Cappy being the first Brewer pitcher to pick up a hit to come true, enabling me to run here and rub it in everyone's face.

Actually, that won't happen. I have class. I don't make generalized predictions and then gloat when they come true.

(I still think Cappy gets a knock today, though)

Why is Hall starting?

Hard to start Hall the day after Hardy is robbed of a jack. However, Billy deserves to play 1-2 times a week to rest JJ and allow himself the opportunity to show he's learning to make adjustments

Yeah, Hall needs to get in there once in a while.

It's not really a big deal, but I would think you'd give JJ a bunch of starts at the beginning of the year.

And based on the five minutes of pregame we just had, I would much prefer Vic and Adam over Drew and Tom.

Pop Quiz (no looking this up)...of the 8 Brewers with at least 10 at bats (that's the usual 8 starters, not Cirillo or Hall), who has the fewest strikeouts?

edit: He's also one of 2 starters with more walks than strikeouts. Cirillo is the third member of the Crew with more walks than strikeouts

JJ

They mentioned something about him not striking out on yesterday's telecast.
