4/20/05 - Brewers (TBA) @ Astros (Oswalt) 7:05CT

You are what you are, and right now this team couldn't run out of it's own way. Will it get better? Well the 'Crew is picking up right where they left off the 2nd 1/2 of last year. I suspect they will win about what they got last year. None of this should be to much of a surprise, just hard to take. Hope can be dangerous when put into the wrong hands.

[ We've got a definite pattern of players getting worse here. ]

I wouldn't say that. Podsednik got turned into a tradable commodity, Clark got turned into a legit leadoff guy (excluding Yost's infactuation with having Clark steal off of good defensive catchers), and Overbay got turned into a legitimate 3B. Branyan seems to be really pickup up his contact skills as well.

Now, I don't know if any or all of these are attributed to Wynegar, but I don't think there's only a pattern of players getting worse here.

Good post, shelmark... I thought about that a little bit on Monday when Perez was pitching and the whole team seemed lost. They aren't taking "professional" approaches at the plate... a lot of guys are swinging early in the count on pitches that they certainly don't seem to be "keyed" on, and many are taking pitches later in counts that are hit-me-fastballs right down the middle. Clark has been the exception, but even his ABs haven't been as crisp lately.

It seems to me like a preparation problem... they don't seem mentally ready. It's not like we've been facing nobodies in the Cards' trio and Perez and Oswalt, but the hitters shouldn't be completely lost... it's not like these are new/unknown pitchers.

You know this is something I've been wondering about lately. I think Jim Powell might have mentioned that somebody (St. Louis?) apparently had a good scouting report on the Brewers. I honestly have no idea who does the Brewers advance scouting, how long they've been there and what kind of success they've had in the past. Is it possible that some of the Brewers failures are due to simply not knowing the other teams as well as the other teams know the Brewers? It does seem like a disproportionate number of pitchers have looked Cy-Youngesque against the Crew over the past couple of years.

batman, I'm not sure what to say. I mean, did my eyes deceive me or did Mr. Plate Discipline, Cirillo, go 0-3 seeing a total of 3 pitches? This is a guy who works the count. Still, it's not like we're getting beaten by crappy pitchers. We've beaten Oliver Perez, Kip Wells (twice), Kerry Wood, and Josh Fogg.

We've lost in games started by Zambrano, Maddux, Redman, Suppan, Carpenter, Marquis, Odalis Perez, Dessens, and Oswalt.

So looking at the elite pitchers we've faced (this is subjective, but I'll say guys Doug Davis caliber or better)--that's Oliver Perez, Kip Wells, Kerry Wood, Carlos Zambrano, Redman, Marquis, Odalis Perez, and Oswalt)--we're 4-5.

As for the other games, Suppan is an innings-eater who is either outstanding or terrible. Carpenter is a guy with loads of talent, but no results till last year. Maddux is a wily veteran who still can get it done. Josh Fogg is a so-so guy, and we beat him. And finally there's Dessens, who isn't very good. But unfortunately he plays for the hottest team in the game.

So my point is that we're losing in very frustrating ways and playing poor defense, but we're also not facing a lot of back of the rotation guys.

And look at the teams we've played. Astros, Dodgers, Cubs, Pirates, and Cardinals. Only one of those teams has a weaker lineup than us, and that's the Pirates.

I may not have made my point very clearly, but I'm saying we just need to relax. The Brewers will be fine. We beat up on the Pirates. Yes, it's frustrating how we're losing, but if you looked at the projected lineups and pitching matchups each day, it would makes sense why we're only 5-9.

President / Dir of Site Ops Posts: 30

haha, I have more posts than the Prez/Director! How great a site can this be if the "owner" has only 30 posts? You're only a rookie, what could you possibly know?

-I used to have a neat-o signature, but it got erased.
