7/29/03 - Brewers (Sheets) @ Mets (Glavine)

ESPN sez:

"FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Mets hope to avoid a 16th loss in 20 games when they continue a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday on Gary Carter Night at Shea Stadium.

New York, which has lost three games in a row, fell to 3-9 after the All-Star Break with a 4-2 loss in Monday's series opener.

Brewers rookie Scott Podsednik snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run single against John Franco with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Carter, a former Mets captain who was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, was a member of their 1985-89 teams, winning the World Series in 1986.

Mets lefthander Tom Glavine (6-11, 5.15 ERA) is 0-3 in his last four starts and 1-8 in his last 11. On Thursday, he gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings of a 5-1 loss at Montreal.

Glavine is 1-1 in two games against Milwaukee this season and 5-2 with a 4.80 ERA in eight career games against them.

Brewers righthander Ben Sheets (9-7, 3.87) has won his last two starts, yielding one earned run in 14 innings. On Thursday, he allowed one run and five hits in seven innings in a 2-1 win over Houston.

Sheets beat the Mets on June 5 at Shea Stadium, 5-3, after allowing three runs and six hits in seven innings. He is 1-1 with a 5.82 ERA in three lifetime games against them."

From Rotoworld:

Mariners acquired infielder Rey Sanchez from the Mets for outfielder Kenny Kelly.

If the plan is to use Sanchez strictly as a reserve shortstop, this is a good trade. The Mariners have tried to get by with Mark McLemore and Willie Bloomquist at shortstop while Carlos Guillen has been hurt, but neither player is an adequate option. The Mariners still need to go get a third baseman. Sanchez shouldn't have any value in AL-only leagues.

Mets acquired outfielder Kenny Kelly from the Mariners for infielder Rey Sanchez.

A non-reliever? Well, maybe Kelly will convert if he continues to struggle offensively. The former University of Miami quarterback was batting .246 with 13 HR, 37 RBI, 79/29 K/BB and 20 SB in 341 AB for Triple-A Tacoma. Kelly, who cleared waivers a couple of months ago, will join Triple-A Norfolk for now. He doesn't project as a major league regular.

If the Mets can unload Sanchez, there is no reason the Brewers can't do the same with EY.

They gave up garbage, too http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif.

EDIT: Actually, Kelly was a second round pick in '97. He's a career .257 hitter in the minors with some power. Baseball Cube doesn't have OBPs, though... last year at Tacoma it as a horrible .295 but he is only 24. Here's some linkage:

No, it's not wrong at all. I find myself feeling the same way. This home run and the 5 hit-trip will be evidence that Clayton is improving and using his great hands. As a result, Billy Hall and Enrique Cruz will get to know each other real well as they waste away on the bench.

150 ABs for Cruz? I'd be surprised if he got 75 at this point. Why couldn't Seattle have traded for Clayton instead of Sanchez!?!

I hope those two excellent innings (and that sweeeet splitter to Reyes or whomever that was - forgot already) will have persuaded potential suitors that DJ is A-Okay. The Cards still need somebody... Mr. Jocketty on line one, perhaps?

For the record, midway through last night's game, there was this exchange:

BU: "Here's Joe McEwing for the Mets...Not Patrick Ewing. Remember when they had him here in New York, Jim? He's retired now, but boy he was something."

JP: "Yeah, he could hit better than most of their lineup."

Oh, God...

"So if this fruit's a Brewer's fan, his ass gotta be from Wisconsin...(or Chicago)."
