very exciting news, hopefully the kids not feeling too much pressure

either way (success/flop), I wouldn't expect a deep game for him, most likely will be on a pitch count (and I have no reference to back that up, just common knowledge, right?)

good luck to the young lefty

SportsTicker Game Preview:

Cincinnati (60-7http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif at Milwaukee (61-77) 8:05 pm EDT

----------------------------------------------------------------

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Luis Martinez makes his major league

debut for the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday as they cap a

three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Martinez (NR) went a combined 12-5 with a 2.13 ERA in 27 starts

for Class AA Huntsville and Class AAA Indianapolis this year,

going 4-0 with a 0.99 ERA in five starts for the latter squad.

The lefthander last pitched on August 26, yielding five hits in

seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 win over Louisville.

The Brewers evened the series with a 4-3 triumph on Tuesday,

their 13th in 15 games. Eddie Perez plated Wes Helms with a

double to right field in the eighth inning against Danny Graves

for the go-ahead run.

Milwaukee's Keith Ginter and Cincinnati's Wily Mo Pena each hit

two-run homers. The Brewers are one game ahead of the

last-place Reds in the National League Central.

John Bale (1-1, 2.76), who will make his sixth start and seventh

appearance for Cincinnati, picked up his first win as a Red on

Friday, beating St. Louis, 8-5. He allowed two runs and seven

hits in six innings.

The lefthander has never faced the Brewers before.

Starting against the Reds tonight, when is his first major league start? 5 days from now...lets see...Either next Monday or Tuesday I suppose. Good Luck Luis, the Reds are a nice little step between AAA and the Bigs!!

Edit - uh oh. didn't Nuegie once make a successful September debut against the Reds?? A sign of things to come?? I hope not.

For goodness sake shut him down. Martinez has never thrown more than 122 innings in a season prior to this year. He has now started 28 games and thrown nearly 170 innings. He obviously was nervous tonight and didn't have his curve or location(bad combo), but even with his best stuff do we really want him facing Houston, SF, and St. Louis in a pennant race?

His command was non existent, he was obviously anxious and nervous. For falling behind 2-0 on what seemed like every hitter and probably throwing 90 pitches and only 45? for strikes he still relinquished but 3 runs (4 if the guy at second scores). His ball has some life to it and that curve looks like it could be nasty. Let's hope next time out he is a bit more relaxed.

Luis never should have gone out for the 5th. I was "watching" the game on MLB Gameday and it didn't seem like any 2 pitches were within 12 inches of each other as most seemed to be all over the place. Not pretty numbers for facing the Reds AAA squad. Either he was way too nervous or maybe his tank is empty (naw, battlers never admit to being tired).

On a side note, for those who watch more of the games, does Podsednik have much plate discipline? I've seen at least 3 times during the Reds series where he's struck out basically with his bat on his shoulder and he hasn't swung at more than 1 ball in the strike zone. There's no reason in the world with 2 strikes he shouldn't be protecting the plate, but once again in the 5th he lOOks at strike 3. I wonder if his walks are more a result of not swinging and making the pitcher throw strikes than any real sign of plate discipline. With Ginter it's pretty clear he knows the strike zone, with Podsednik it's not clear at all.

Most would consider Podsednik very disciplined because he is patient at the plate and is not afraid to go deep in the count and take many pitches. I don't like when people talk about "knowing" the strike zone. I don't even know what that means but the reality is that you either "recognize" the pitch and location early or you don't. Guys who have slow bat speed and poor pitch recognition are currently at AAA or below. I don't think Podsednik really sees the pitch that well, but he has learned over the years that the more pitches he takes the more strikes he will get. There is a difference. Gwynn, Bonds, Brett...a few examples had great pitch recognition and quick bats. Pod has made up for a lack of both with just good old patience. So disciplined? I would say yes, absolutely. Ability to recognize pitch early? No. Ability to adjust and learn? Yes. BTW, he took a called 3rd tonight on a tough curveball.

Don't know about the rest of you, but that gets my vote as post of the year

I remember when the Brewers' idea of "plate discipline" was to have a woman in latex talk dirty while hurling place settings at them. Certainly if a coach ever told Wes Helms to take a walk, Helms assumed he had been released. I'm glad we can even have this discussion.

Pretty good season for Brady Clark tonight. Awesome debut for the Brewers' hotly anticipated new pitcher -- Mike Crudale.

Can we play the Reds forever?

Greg.

And I woulod go with this from huntsvillefan report at the playoff loss . . .

Oh yes - Mike Kremblas started a bench clearing, pimp slapping contest at the end of the game. Maybe that'll get us fired up for tomorrow night.

I think I read somewhere that Huntsville is famous for their pimps!!
