8/22/2003 Pirates (Wells) @ Brewers (Franklin)

Wayne Franklin is mired in the worst month of his career, with an 8.31 ERA this month. He's giving up a ton of flyballs at this point, which doesn't bode well in miller park.

Kip Wells is having a down month as well, with a 4.95 ERA. His last outing was decent, and he's fared well against the Brewers this season losing 2, but with a 3.80 ERA.

SportsTicker game preview:

Pittsburgh (58-67) at Milwaukee (51-75) 8:05 pm EDT

----------------------------------------------------------------

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers aim for a season

high-tying fourth straight victory Friday when they begin a

three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Miller Park.

The Brewers, who won four in a row from June 1-6, swept

Philadelphia with a 5-2 triumph on Thursday. Keith Ginter and

Jason Conti homered for Milwaukee, which extended its home

winning streak to a season-high four games.

Lefthander Wayne Franklin (8-10, 5.39 ERA), who has lost four of

his last five starts, gets the call for Milwaukee.

Franklin was reached for three runs and nine hits in six innings

in Sunday's 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh. He fell to 2-1 with a 5.09

ERA in 12 career outings against the Pirates and 1-3 with an

8.31 ERA in four starts this month.

Franklin is 7-4 with a 5.04 ERA in night games.

Pittsburgh lost at St. Louis on Thursday, 6-3, when Jim Edmonds

smacked a three-run homer against Joe Beimel in the bottom of

the ninth. Two pitches earlier, Jose Hernandez dropped a foul

popup hit by Edmonds.

Pirates righthander Kip Wells (5-6, 3.80) is 0-2 in his last

three starts, allowing 11 runs and 22 hits in 20 innings. Wells

did not receive a decision in his last start Saturday, when he

allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings against the

Brewers.

Wells is 5-3 with a 3.52 ERA in 10 career outings against

Milwaukee, beating the Brewers three times last season.

Put Danny Kolb in and take it to the bank...

The rotation seems to be doing okay, in fact. Sheets, Martinez, Kinney, Franklin and Davis could be a good one next year. Free agent? Who needs a free agent? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

And Podsednik with TWO homers tonight? Did he borrow one of Sammy Sosa's bats?
