8/16/2003 Brewers (Davis) @ Pirates (Wells)

MassBrew

Ooohhh, scintillating matchup as it's:

"Morning Baseball!"

Well, for the first inning anyway. And not in the Eastern time zone. But you get the idea. It's earlier than usual.

And unless you're stuck in the office like myself, I can't imagine we'll have a big in-game throng here at Brewerfan. But remember to put Jim Powell on the radio as you drive to the grocery store or the hardware place today.

I won't comment on the game itself, because I'm not going to have a running game commentary with just myself http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

(VDLS has coughed up two runs in the 7th, 4-3 Pirates -- ugh)

Glendon Rusch has been in the booth with Jim Powell since the 2nd, and he's been very good.

I think I know why Wes Helms' visit wasn't quite as successful as today's guest appearance by Glendon. Helms did OK, and he'll be back again this week, apparently, but Rusch has been jumping into the flow of the game with unsolicited comments, just as any color man would. He's been very insightful, and I think a lot of that is simply because of what he brings to the game and its nuances as a pitcher instead of as a position player. Helms only spoke after JP asked him a question, and never really got into the flow of the game. Thus, after three innings or so with Wes, the "interview material" was kind of used-up.

The other point about the broadcast is that JP did indeed bring up Keith Ginter's status after Helms returns with Ned Yost. They also discussed that Bill Hall is starting at second base today, and will at SS on Sunday. That interview can be found at:

Whoo-hoo, Scotty Po!

[insert gleeful dancing in office here] http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif

Don't let Bill Hall's 0-for-5 fool you -- he's sent three balls to the right-field warning track and wall.

It's Kolb time!

Glendon Rusch did an amazing job in the booth. He was better than a lot of "real" color commentators I've heard... what an intelligent, well-spoken guy. I know we've all gotten on him earlier in the year but this stint in the booth was really well done.

Scott Podsednik seems to have broken out of that slump quite nicely. A game-winning three-run homer? I'd say that's pretty good.

A scare in the ninth, but Kolb got out of it. Very exciting game... seems like the non-TV affairs always are like that.

What are the group thoughts on start #1 for Davis? He didn't get a decision but he kept us in position to win the game. He left with the lead, right?

I don't see any reason Ginter shouldn't play the rest of the year. Hopefully, he'll be a starter next year. Well, there is one thing that will prevent him from playing everyday....logic.

From Drew over at the JS:

(In the ninth) veteran Eric Young, pinch-hitting for Keith Osik, drew a walk from Pirates closer Mike Lincoln.

Uh, no Drew.

Young reached on an error by old friend Jose Hernandez.

But don't worry, it's only a sentence about the critical rally in a ninth-inning victory within your game story.

Were you even there, Drew?
