Brewers down Osprey once more

MISSOULA ? A beautiful sunset fell across the sky Saturday night over the third-base side at Ogren-Allegiance Park during the Missoula Osprey?s Pioneer League contest with the Helena Brewers. That and a free bag of peanuts was about all the 2,845 Osprey fans in attendance had to cheer about.

 

Brewers right-handed starter R.J. Seidel kept the O?s off the scoreboard and hitless through six complete innings and third baseman Zelous Wheeler continued his personal assault on Missoula pitching as Helena picked up its second win in as many evenings over the Osprey with an 8-3 victory.

 

Down 7-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Missoula got a two-out double by right fielder Anthony Smith off Brewers reliever Corey Frerichs for the team?s first base hit. After Gerardo Bustamante?s third walk of the game a run-scoring pinch-hit single by Pete Clifford was followed by a two-run single by designated hitter Bill Musselman.

 

It came in the O?s second straight Peanut Inning after the team failed to score in the sixth and management tried to keep the hometown faithful entertained.

 

But that was Missoula?s total offensive output on the evening as the Osprey dropped to 5-7. Afterward, O?s left fielder Derrick Walker, playing his second season in Missoula, was ready to take the team?s mini-slide in stride.

 

?Every day is a new adventure in this game,? he said. ?Sometimes you hit the ball hard and the hits just don?t come. Obviously we haven?t been swinging the bats real well, but we just have to compete.?

 

Seidel (2-0) was brilliant in his third outing of the season against the Osprey. In his six frames, last year?s 16th-round pick from Central High School in La Crosse, Wisc., walked two and struck out four.

 

?He was just like an everyday righty,? said obviously displeased Osprey skipper Damon Mashore. ?He got his velocity into the early 90s, but it was just everyday stuff.?

 

Wheeler, who had four of Helena?s 14 hits in the Brewers? 10-2 victory Friday night, got things cranking for the visitors in the top of the second off Osprey starter Santo Baez (0-2), who lost his second straight decision to the Brewers. Wheeler followed Eric Newton?s single to lead off the inning with a towering two-run homer to right, his first of the season, giving Helena a 2-0 lead. He added a seventh-inning double to finish 2-for-4.

 

After back-to-back errors by Missoula third baseman Houston Summers and shortstop Eli Rumler, runners came home on Eric Farris? two-out single as Helena took a 4-0 lead.

 

Shaky defense on the left side of the infield plagued the Osprey throughout the evening. Summers and Rumler contributed three miscues apiece as Missoula committed seven errors in the contest.

 

Baez took the brunt of the team?s struggles in the field, allowing two earned runs on five hits over four innings. He fanned four and walked one.

 

Harvard product Steffan Wilson had a pair of singles and was the only other Brewer other than Wheeler to have a multi-hit evening.

 

The Brewers face the Great Falls White Sox tonight at 4:00 PM (5:00 PM Central) in Great Falls.

Parra, Sounds Defeat Express In Series Opener

 

NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds opened their homestand with the club?s fourth straight victory, a 3-2 triumph over the visiting Round Rock Express on Saturday evening in front of 9,104 fans at Greer Stadium.

 

The victory was the sixth in the last seven contests for Nashville (49-33), which maintained its 2 ½ game lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

 

Sounds starter Manny Parra (2-1) earned a win over the Express for his second straight outing. The southpaw allowed one run on two hits while walking a pair of batters and striking out four over six innings of work.

 

Nashville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Tony Gwynn scored on Brad Nelson?s bases-loaded double play grounder.

 

The Express tied it at 1-1 in the fifth when Cody Ransom drew an inning-opening walk and scored two batters later on Barry Wesson?s RBI single through the left side. The knock halted Parra?s consecutive hitless innings streak at 13 frames.

 

Drew Anderson doubled to open the bottom of the fifth inning to extend his longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games, the third double-digit effort by a Sounds player this season.

 

The Sounds took a 3-1 lead by scoring a pair of two-out unearned runs later in the frame. Chris Barnwell, who reached on a fielder?s choice that erased Anderson, scored on a Gwynn RBI single to break the tie before Parra came plateward on Callix Crabbe?s bloop double down the left field line.

Greg Aquino and Joe Thatcher each worked a scoreless inning following Parra?s departure before Grant Balfour took over in the top of the ninth.

 

Jason Lane greeted the right-hander with a solo homer to center field, the outfielder?s fifth longball of the season. The blast reduced the Nashville lead to 3-2. The Aussie recovered to retire the next three batters in order to notch his fourth save in five opportunities.

 

Round Rock starter Chance Douglass (0-2) took the loss after he allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits in six frames.

 

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening. Nashville left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (3-2, 4.20) will make the start to face Round Rock hurler Chan Ho Park (5-6, 5.19).

Perfection eludes Parra, not Sounds

Nashville wins fourth straight

The Nashville Sounds captured their fourth win in a row, and Manny Parra followed his perfect game by allowing two hits over six innings in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Round Rock.

 

A crowd of 9,104 at Greer Stadium saw Parra allow one run against the Express, the team he got the perfect game against on Monday.

 

"Well, it's hard to compare tonight to a perfect game, but he pitched another good game for us," acting Sounds Manager Harry Spilman said. "He did his job."

 

Spilman took the place of Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas, who missed the game to be with his family. There is no timetable for Kremblas' return.

 

"I think I did all right," Parra said. "I definitely wasn't commanding the ball like I did against them the first time."

 

Nashville took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on RBI hits by center fielder Tony Gwynn and right fielder Callix Crabbe. Gwynn's single knocked in Chris Barnwell and Crabbe's double brought Parra home.

 

"(Gwynn's) doing a good job for us," Spilman said. "And then Crabbe came up with that big double down the line."

 

Nashville got into trouble in the ninth inning. Reliever Grant Balfour gave up a home run to Express first baseman Jason Lane to open the inning.

 

With the tying run at the plate, Balfour got Cody Ransom to ground to short. Balfour struck out the last two batters to record his fourth save.

 

Nashville jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Gwynn singled to lead off and later came home when Brad Nelson hit into a double play.

 

Nashville has won six of its past seven and 22 of its past 30 games.

Sounds' travel problems delay start of the game

The Nashville Sounds game with Round Rock Saturday night was pushed back an hour to a 7:05 start.

 

Due to bad weather, the Sounds did not arrive on their connecting flight from Dallas until 5 p.m. The team's equipment was unloaded next to the dugout at 5:45 p.m., prompting officials to postpone the game for an hour.

 

"I tip my hat to the players; the way they came out and performed," acting Manager Harry Spilman said. "Especially after the long travel day we had today."

 

The Sounds were returning from a series in Albuquerque, N.M.

 

Kremblas gone: Spilman, the Sounds hitting coach, will be the acting manager until Frank Kremblas returns.

 

"It's a day-to-day thing," Spilman said. "We'll just have to wait and see."

 

Spilman has managed in Cleveland's organization.

 

"It's different; I think the real competitiveness comes out of you," Spilman said. "You got a lot of decisions to make."

 

Hit streaks: Three Sounds carried a season-best hitting streak into Saturday's game. Tony Gwynn extended his streak to five games with a first inning single.

 

Gwynn also had an RBI single in the fifth, which knocked in Chris Barnwell to give Nashville a 2-1 lead.

 

Left fielder Drew Anderson also extended his hit streak to 10 games ? the Sounds third-longest of the season ? on a fifth-inning double.

 

Joe Dillon had the night off, but has hit safely in nine consecutive games, going 13-for-35 with a .371 average. He has a .345 average with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in his last 15 home games.

 

Parra perfection: Sounds starter Manny Parra retired 32 consecutive batters dating back to his first Triple-A start June 20 against Iowa through the second inning of Saturday's game.

 

Parra retired two in the sixth inning of the Iowa game, then was perfect in the Sounds' 3-0 win Monday at Round Rock. Parra retired the side in the first inning Saturday before hitting Jason Lane with a pitch to start the second inning.

 

Notable: The Sounds have the best record in the Pacific Coast League, at 49-33, and are on a roll at home. The Sounds sit 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Nashville has won 26 of its past 34 home games and own the PCL's best home record at 26-12.

 

Saturday marked the 52nd occasion in which the Sounds have scored the game's first run. Nashville is 36-16 when scoring the game's first run.

 

The Sounds recorded their 20th victory in the month of June, which leads all PCL teams. Nashville had not had a 20-win month since joining the PCL in 1998.

Streaking Gamel lifts Manatees

 

Mat Gamel extended his hitting streak to 28 games and drove in two runs as Brevard County edged visiting Clearwater, 6-5, on Saturday.

 

Gamel singled in the first inning to stretch the longest streak in the Florida State League this season, then ripped a two-run double in the sixth to snap a 4-4 tie.

 

Darren Ford hit his first homer of the year for the Manatees (he had hit five while at West Virginia), a solo shot in the first, and scored twice for Brevard County (5-5).

 

Manatees' starter Derek Miller (4-4) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five in six innings. E.J. Shanks fanned one in a perfect ninth for his third save.

 

Threshers starter Luis Villarreal ( a Brewer farmhand earlier this season at the AA and AAA level) surrendered four runs -- two earned -- on six hits and two walks, fanning five in four innings. Jason Wylie (0-1) gave up two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking three in four frames.

HOLMBERG EXTENDS STREAK IN POWER WIN

 

Kenny Holmberg extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a solo home run in the seventh inning of Saturday night?s game at West End Field as the West Virginia Power scored seven times in the fifth inning and took game two of the series, defeating the Greenville Drive 9-5.

 

Jimmy Mojica scored on Brad Miller?s double in the third inning to put the Power on the board. West Virginia sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring seven times on five hits. Brent Brewer walked with the bases loaded to plate the first run of the inning, Andrew Lefave singled to plate the second run, Taylor Green?s base hit brought in the next two before Mojica was issued a free pass with the bases loaded and Martin Maldonado capped off the big inning with a two-run double.

 

West Virginia right hander Chris Toneguzzi retired the first 13 batters he faced. He walked two batters in the fifth inning before allowing a three-run homer to Matt Sheely, which was the only hit he allowed in his five innings of work. The Drive scored on Josh Reddick?s RBI groundout in the sixth inning. Holmberg hit a solo shot, his 10th of the year, in the seventh inning and Greenville plated the final run of the game on Kris Negron?s RBI triple in the eighth.

 

Toneguzzi (1-1) allowed three runs on one hit and struck out three through five innings to get the win, Shawn Ferguson surrendered two runs on five hits over four innings out of the bullpen to secure the save and Brian Steinocher (2-7) was tagged with the loss.

 

The Power improved to 54-24 overall and 6-4 in the second half, while the Drive fell to 35-44 overall and 6-4 in the second half with the loss. Mojica and Miller led the Power with two hits apiece while Maldonado and Green knocked in two runs each. West Virginia has scored 28 runs on 29 hits in the first two games of the series.

 

The Power will continue the four game series against the Drive Sunday afternoon. The Power will start right hander Jeremy Jeffress (4-1, 2.96) and Greenville will start left hander Dustin Richardson (3-5, 3.82). The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM (3:05 Central).

Early Offense Supports Inman in First Win

 

Will Inman worked six strong innings to earn his first win at the double-A level and Huntsville tallied in five different innings en route to a 7-1 win over West Tenn in the opener of a four-game set Saturday night at Pringles Park. The Stars improved to 5-8 in the second half and 42-39 overall, while the Diamond Jaxx suffered their seventh straight setback to fall to 3-10 in the second half and 34-49 on the season.

 

Hernan Iribarren opened the game with a triple and scored on a ground ball out by Michael Brantley, who has driven in all five of his runs on the road. Ruben Mateo?s line drive home run to left field extended the Stars lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning. It was his fifth home run of the season, third against West Tenn and second in as many games. Matt Tuiasosopo hit a two-out home run off of Inman, the only hit he allowed, in the fourth to trim the Stars lead to 2-1.

 

Iribarren singled in a run in the fifth and a Lou Palmisano sacrifice fly, his first since April 12, in the sixth pushed the visitors lead to 4-1. Brendan Katin singled in a run and then scored, with Palmisano, on a two-run single by Alicdes Escobar, that broke up a 17 at-bat hitless string, in a three-run eighth that extended the visitors lead to 7-1. Every Stars batter had at least one hit in a 13-hit attack, the most in a game for Huntsville since a 21-hit outburst against Montgomery on May 30. Steve Sollmann singled to extend his hitting streak to a season-high seven in a row, while Palmisano pushed his to a season-best nine straight.

 

Inman walked four and struck out six in matching his longest outing with the Stars in his four turns at the double-A level. He ended each of his last three innings with a strikeout before being followed to the hill by Steve Hammond, who was making his first relief appearance since joining the Stars last season. The southpaw went three scoreless innings to earn his first career save. He gave up two infield singles, walked two and struck out three.

 

The series continues Sunday afternoon, as left-hander Sam Narron will take the mound for Huntsville against West Tenn right-hander Joe Woerman. Seidel holds Osprey hitless

If not for a late-arriving text message, R.J. Seidel might have made Pioneer League history.

 

Seidel tossed six hitless innings for his second straight win Saturday as the Helena Brewers posted an 8-3 victory over the Missoula Osprey.

 

Milwaukee's 16th-round pick in last year's draft, Seidel (2-0) walked two and struck out six in his third start of the season. He had thrown roughly 80 pitches and wasn't sure whether he'd get a chance to take the mound in the seventh.

 

Turns out he wasn't the only one. Members of the Helena staff apparently sent text messages to Brewers Minor League pitching coordinator Jim Rooney. According to Seidel, Rooney gave his approval only after Corey Frerichs came on in relief.

 

"I wanted to go back out there," the Wisconsin native said. "[Rooney] didn't text them back in time. Right after they shut me down, they told me he said to let me [keep going]."

 

Seidel surrendered five runs on 11 hits over five innings in his professional debut on June 20. But he's given up just one hit over 11 frames in his last two outings to lower his ERA to 3.38.

 

"I had my fastball down in the zone, on both sides of the plate," he said of Saturday's performance. "I was just working my off-speed pitches in after that, keeping them off-balance, keeping the ball down and working the corners."

 

With his parents listening to the play-by-play on the internet, Seidel was unaware of his feat.

 

"I didn't even look at the scoreboard until they told me I was done and the rest of the guys were like, 'You threw a no-hitter,'" he said.

 

Anthony Smith broke up the bid with a two-out double off Frerichs in the seventh. Peter Clifford followed with an RBI single and William Musselman delivered a two-run single to cap the Osprey's three-run inning.

 

Zelous Wheeler had two hits, including a two-run homer, and Eric Farris also drove in two runs for Helena (6-6).

 

Starter Santo Baez (0-2) gave up four runs -- two earned -- on five hits and a walk over four innings with four strikeouts for Missoula (5-7).
