Whatever it is, it still isn't real grass. I think NexTurf is a little longer and not as rough as normal turf. There are quite a few makers of more realistic turf. You see it a lot nowadays in College football. I believe Wisconsin is getting one of the new types of turf installed at Camp Randall.

Philly probably shouldn't count as turf... I think it's some sort of hybrid between real grass and plastic stuff. Everybody seems to love playing on it... it's like a perfectly manicured "real" field without the knee-buckling hardness of astroturf.

Hopefully the last bastions of artificialness will soon be gone... you can build a fast track by cutting the grass real short and it's so much better for the players.

One of the great things to happen in baseball is the disappearance of artificial turf fields. The Philly argument is kind of irrelevent since they will have a grass field next year with their new ballpark. That leaves:

Minny

Toronto

Montreal/San Juan (both have artificial turf)

Tampa Bay (Next Turf or whatever you call it)

That means as of next year all outdoor only stadiums will have grass fields except for San Juan.

Do they graft the grass onto plastic? That would be one weird hybrid. Sorta like scoop and confucious.

Rule question:

In the AL, if you move the DH to a defensive position, you lose the DH spot, and the pitcher has to bat.

However, if you bring the DH in to pitch, do you lose the DH spot? Say Kieschnick came in to pitch the 7th, and then Estrella took over in the 8th. If the DH spot was due up in the 9th, could Kieschnick still bat? I think no, but I don't have a real good reason behind that. You didn't pull the DH, per se, but it seems kind of like cheating if you could get away with that.

Let's see, Cubs lose, Reds lose.

Cards losing, Astros losing.

Can you say eight games out, .500 on the road?

Just messin' with ya' -- fun, though.

Still the only sixth place team in baseball.

I would think that since you put the DH into a fielding spot, even if it is pitcher, that you would lose the DH. And in that case, Estrella would bat in Brooks' spot in the order.

Oh, and it feels real nice to be on the good side of a 9-1 ballgame. Lets keep this up.

About every other day in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the baseball writer comes up with some new way about how Jacque Jones is getting screwed out of an All-Star spot. I'm still trying to figure this one out. A .300 average is nice, 10 home runs are nice, but an OPS under 800 for a LF? No thank you. Even more silly is Torii Hunter being so high up in the All-Star balloting, thanks to one great catch that everyone saw last year. What has he done to deserve the nod this season? Drew Olson should write a notes on why Podzilla is getting the shaft in All-Star balloting.

Knowing DH rules is like knowing the laws in some backward third-world country. They don't and shouldn't matter to us since we live in a more enlightened country and play in a more enlightened league. We only have to put up with this twisted contortion of baseball for a couple games a year, so I couldn't care less about what the rules are for DHs, because anything regarding that joke of a position is just another reason the DH taints the game of baseball. There's still no double-switch, that's all that matters.

Ya, that really ruined the game tonight, watching Kieschnik knock the ball around the ballpark instead of watching Kinney feebly wave the stick. I actually love the present set-up of having the DH in the AL to keep players like Edgar Martinez and Frank Thomas in baseball but still getting to enjoy the strategicness of NL baseball.

And it'll ruin the game another night when our opponent keeps a hot pitcher in a close game instead of going to a weak pen because they don't have to make a double switch or PH for him. Just because the DH worked out in our favor ONE TIME doesn't mean it's a great rule.

And we all love professional wrestling because allowed an aging Joe Louis to continue to fight. When you're washed-up, you're washed up. How 'bout we make a rule in football so Dan Marino, Joe Montana, and John Elway can come back: when they come in, the opposing defense would not be allowed to sack them, and opposing CBs would have to wear 50 pound ankle weights. Then we could keep the legends around longer, and place them on a level playing field.
