Nashville Media Notes:

PETTYJOHN, HOPF JOIN SOUNDS: Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn has joined the Sounds from Double-A Huntsville and will fill Jose Capellan?s spot in the team?s starting rotation. He is slated to make his first Nashville appearance on Sunday against Tucson. The 29-year-old southpaw opened the year by posting a 4-2 record and 4.45 ERA (28 ER / 56.2 IP) in 11 Southern League starts for the Stars, including wins in each of his final two outings with the club. He has struck out 54 batters in his 56 2/3 innings of work while walking only 15 over that span.

In an additional move, catcher J.R. Hopf has joined the Sounds from Advanced-A Brevard County, where he batted .213 in 19 contests. The second-year pro fills the roster spot that has been vacant since Ryan Braun?s promotion last week.

J.R. Hopf, 24, was an undrafted free agent who signed less than one year ago with the Brewers, so that's a nice ride for him in a backup soldier-type role. His promotion indicates that the Brewers aren't about to shake up the core of their Huntsville and Brevard rosters in the midst of tight races for postseason spots in the first-half standings.

No word yet on a new Huntsville Star, who will slide into Adam Pettyjohn's Huntsville rotation spot, or who will fill the now vacant corner utility spot at Brevard.

RHP David Johnson, the 24-year-old 2004 15th round pick out of UCLA, moves from the Manatee bullpen up to Huntsville, filling the Stars' open roster spot.

David Johnson's MiLB stat page:

Corey Thurman will build up his pitch count over the next few starts, similar to what Jose Capellan did in Nashville, as Thurman will move ino Adam Pettyjohn's Huntsville rotation spot.

Hope to have roster updates on the two open Brevard County roster spots with the promotions of Johnson and J.R. Hopf for you soon.

Did Brevard ever fill Garrison's rotation spot?

The roster spot was accounted for when Chris Errecart was activated, so the Manatees are currently short two, not three.

However, we haven't seen a projected starting rotation for the next few days, so not sure as to who will be jumping into the rotation spot. It may be someone about to be added to the roster, rather than a current Manatee reliever.

We'll try to find out for you -- it's what we do http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

Congratulations and welcome back to 25-year-old RHP Josh Baker, the Brewers' 4th round pick in the 2004 draft, activated from the Manatees' disabled list. The Rice University product missed all of 2006.

To be honest, I'm struggling to recollect the nature of Baker's arm troubles. Maybe someone can help us out with that...

Mass, I seem to recall Baker's problem was shoulder. I've mentioned this before, but in the AFL I asked Jeff Niemann how Baker was doing. He'd just spoken with him the night before. Josh apparently felt as though his arm was feeling as good--free, easy, and pain-free--since his days in high school. So apparently he'd done something to his arm late in high school, and it just kind of stuck with him. Then as a pro it became bad enough to require surgery.

He was my favorite of the 4 pitchers from early in that draft, so I'm excited to see him back in action (Wahpepah a reliever now, Rogers rehabbing, Yo taking off)

also, I can't find when Ryan Barba was activated, but he's been in there a couple times lately

Keep in mind that when you click on the Transactions Link at the top of any Brewerfan.net page, the list will default to the past seven days. But you can adjust the date range or filter by type of transaction. Barba's activation off the DL was noted on the transaction list on 5/18.

By the way, DHonks, thanks for all the insightful comments in varous threads on this forum as of late -- much appreciated.

Got to see Brevard in Daytona tonight. They got to play 9 innings despite some much needed showers. Barba had a great night at the plate....actually - most of the team did. I guess Lum's visit last week paid off!

While we still don't know the nature of LHP Steve Garrison's injury, his DL stint is backdated to May 27th, and it's been hinted that he may be back in a few days when eligible. So maybe the Manatees have to scramble for one start only.

Anyway, that's why Brevard will go with 24 players instead of 25 for a couple of days -- apparently Garrison will be back quickly.

Good news indeed.

LHP Steve Garrison has been activated from the Brevard disabled list. We wasted a few keystrokes on that brief stint, now didn't we? Always anxious when a pitcher hits the DL.

Versatile IF/OF Ryan Crew has received a promotion from Brevard to Huntsville. Congrats to Ryan.

The Manatees are expected to play a man short of the 25-man high-A roster limit for the immediate time being.

Crew's assignment places the Stars a man over the 24-man AA roster limit, but we read about OF Ruben Mateo's nagging hamstring injury, which forced him from Saturday's game. It wouldn't be a surprise to find out Mateo is heading to the DL to make room for the 23-year-old Crew (24 in August).

Short Stay With Stars for Anderson

The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted outfielder Drew Anderson to triple-A Nashville and promoted infielder/outfielder Ryan Crew from high-A Brevard County to Huntsville. Crew is expected to be in uniform for the Stars in their Sunday game against Chattanooga at AT&T Field.

Anderson struggled to start the year at Nashville, batting just .197 with five runs batted in, but found his stroke in Huntsville, hitting .444 wtih a home run and 11 RBI in 45 at-bats. He had a nine-game hitting streak brought to an end on Thursday and finished with hits in 10 of the 12 games he played in with the Stars. Anderson had two four-hit games and four two-hit games in his short stay in Huntsville.

Crew batted .250 with a home run and 11 runs driven in over 108 at-bats with the Manatees, while playing at second base, third base, shortstop and left field. He hit safely in his last five games, going seven for 15 and collecting a pair of hits in two of those games. Milwaukee selected Crew in the 40th round of the draft in 2005.

Nashville Media Notes:

ABAD PLACED ON D.L.; ANDERSON REJOINS SOUNDS: First baseman Andy Abad was placed on the disabled list today, retroactive to yesterday, due to a left wrist sprain he sustained while sliding into second base during a stolen base attempt in Friday evening?s win against Las Vegas. The veteran is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak, the Sounds? longest of the 2007 season.

Outfielder Drew Anderson has rejoined Nashville from Double-A Huntsville to fill Abad?s roster spot. The 25-year-old batted an impressive .444 (20-for-45) with 11 RBIs in 12 Southern League contests for the Stars after being sent down from Nashville on May 19. Anderson opened the 2007 campaign by hitting just .197 (24-for-122) in 36 contests for the Sounds.

In another indication when it comes to transfers right now that the Brewers are not going to move any impact player before the first-half season ends, Milwaukee has transferred young OF/C Anderson Delarosa from West Virginia to Brevard County, after first activating him from the Power disabled list.

You would think that with West Virginia's significant division lead the Brewers could be more impactful with Power-to-Manatee promotions, but that's not the case -- at least not yet.

More of the same, keeping the core players together for now...

Mateo Sidelined by Lingering Injury

The Milwaukee Brewers have placed outfielder Ruben Mateo on the disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with a nagging right hamstring injury and promoted outfielder Anthony Wycklendt from extended spring training. Wycklendt is expected to be uniform for the final game of a five-game series against the Lookouts in Chattanooga on Wednesday afternoon.

Mateo spent time in extended spring training recovering from the injury and joined the Stars on May 18. He hit two home runs against West Tenn the next day and is currently batting .226 with three home runs and 10 runs batted in. He re-aggravated the injury in Saturday night?s series opener in Chattanooga and was removed after singling and scoring in the top half of the third inning.

Wycklendt, from Glendale, Wisconsin, played in the rookie Arizona League last year and batted .240 with four long balls and 24 runs knocked in. He played his college baseball at Northwestern and was signed as an undrafted free agent last June by the Brewers.

Wycklendt, 23 years old, skips Helena, West Virginia, and Brevard County with this assignment.

Well, there won't be a true "nugget" from the Carlos Lee trade, as Baseball America reports that the Brewers have released 22-year-old LHP Julian Cordero.

Just realized I never fully completed importing Cordero's career stats on his Brewerfan Player Index Page, so here's his numbers from the Baseball Cube. I imagine we'll see him in the Alumni Thread down the road:

Cleaning up some loose roster ends:

Infielder Ryan Metcalf, 23, who saw action last year in the Arizona Rookie League, retired early this spring. He was an undrafted free agent signee from June 2006 (University of Alabama-Birmingham).

RHP Juan Sepulveda was a youngster who had been signed to a 2007 contract last season. He had to be released from his contract with apparent visa problems, we believe. He's in this year's media guide, but he's not in the organization any longer.

Finally, a young Dominican RHP has been signed, Luis Guerrero. He was not signed in time to make it into the Brewer media guide, so we'll create his Index Page when MiLB.com lists his height/weight, etc. once the short-season leagues begin play.

Not officially a transaction, but heralded RHP Wily Peralta of the Dominican Republic, who signed for a $450,000 bouns at age 16 two offseasons ago, will be undergoing Tommy John surgery this week. Peralta debuted with the Arizona Brewers last summer.

Here's the Baseball America report upon his signing, which actually was in November of '05. Peralta was barely 16 1/2 at that time.
