DRIVE SCORE SIX IN THE THIRD TO SNAP POWER WIN STREAK

 

The Greenville Drive scored six of their seven runs in the third inning of Sunday evening?s game at West End Field and snapped West Virginia?s four game winning streak with a 7-1 victory over the Power.

 

Chih-Hsien Chiang?s sacrifice fly plated the first of six runs in the third. Josh Reddick knocked in Lars Anderson with a double and Reid Engel followed with a three-run homer. Brad Miller?s throwing error allowed Paul Smyth to score the final run of the inning. The throwing error was one of four errors in the bottom of the third.

 

Kenny Holmberg scored West Virginia?s only run in the top of the fifth inning on Charlie Fermaint?s sacrifice fly. Greenville added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run from Matt Sheely. The Power committed five errors in the game, and they?ve committed 22 over their last seven games.

 

Dustin Richardson (4-5) allowed just a run on three hits over five innings to get the win while Jeremy Jeffress (4-2) allowed six unearned runs on seven hits and struck out five through four innings and was tagged with the loss. Jeffress registered triple digits on the radar gun several times throughout the game.

 

The Power fell to 54-25 overall and 6-5 in the second half, while the Drive improved to 36-44 overall and 7-4 in the second half with the win. Andrew Lefave went 2-for-2 and reached base all four times up. Lefave is 14-for-26 on the road trip and his .350 batting average still leads the league.

 

The Power will finish the four game series against the Drive Monday night. The Power will start left hander Brae Wright (5-4, 6.00) and Greenville will start right hander Travis Beazley (6-6, 4.93). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Manatees clip Cardinals

 

Mat Gamel extended his Florida State League-leading hitting streak to 29 games as visiting Brevard County rallied past Palm Beach, 6-3, on Sunday.

 

After striking out in the first inning, the 21-year-old third baseman ripped a leadoff double in the third. Gamel struck out again in the fifth, delivered a sacrifice bunt in the seventh and was intentionally walked to load the bases in the ninth.

 

Gamel is batting .425 with 21 RBIs, 15 doubles, four triples and two homers during the streak that began on May 28. Casey Blake had a 31-game hitting streak with Dunedin in 1998.

 

Angel Salome lined a two-run single and Chris Errecart hit a sacrifice fly to snap a 3-3 tie in the ninth for Brevard County (6-5). Salome also lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh to knot the score. Darren Ford walked with the bases loaded in a two-run second.

 

Manatees reliever Kevin Roberts (3-1) struck out four over two perfect innings. E.J. Shanks picked up his fourth save, despite yielding two walks in the ninth. Starter Steve Garrison gave up three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts over six frames.

 

Cardinals reliever Luke Gregerson (1-2) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in the ninth. Starter Eddie Degerman surrendered two runs on three hits while fanning six and walking four over four innings.

Sounds Score In Ninth To Down Express, 5-4

 

NASHVILLE ? The Sounds won in dramatic fashion on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium when Joe Dillon scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a wild pitch thrown by Round Rock reliever Paul Estrada, resulting in a 5-4 Nashville victory.

 

It was the Sounds? eighth last at-bat victory of the year and their fifth win in a row.

 

Dillon paced the Nashville offense by going 3-for-4 on the night, scoring three of Nashville?s five runs, and recording his team-leading 54th RBI of the year. He extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games and is now batting .372 (22-for-59) in his last 15 home games at Greer.

 

The Sounds (50-33) became the first Pacific Coast League club to reach the 50-win plateau with their seventh victory in the last eight games.

 

The Express struck first in the top of the second inning. Jason Lane began the inning with a leadoff walk before Danny Klassen and Josh Anderson hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Lane and Klassen then scored when Dillon misplayed a hard-hit ground ball from Humberto Quintero at the hot corner, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of Round Rock.

 

The Sounds got one back in the bottom of the frame when Dillon led off with a triple to deep right field, his second three-bagger of the year. Brad Nelson followed with an RBI single to right to make it a 2-1 contest.

 

Nashville evened the score in the third when Tony Gwynn reached base due to a throwing error by Express shortstop Jesse Garcia. Gwynn then moved to second on a wild pitch by Round Rock starter Chan Ho Park before Chris Barnwell was granted first base after being hit by a pitch. Jose Macias drove in Gwynn on a hard hit ball up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.

 

Round Rock retook the lead when Cody Ransom led off the top of the 4th inning with a solo home run to deep left center off Sounds starter Adam Pettyjohn, his 12th longball of the year. Klassen followed with another solo shot to right field for his fourth of the year, making the score 4-2.

 

The Sounds rallied to tie the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Macias (3-for-5) led off the inning with his second single of the game before scoring on a Dillon double down the left field line. After the double, Nelson drew a walk to put men at first and second with no outs. While Vinny Rottino was at the plate, Dillon and Nelson both advanced on a passed ball before a wild pitch sent Dillon home and Nelson to third, making the score 4-4.

 

The score remained the same until the bottom of the ninth, when the first two Sounds batters were set down before Dillon singled to left field for his third hit of the game. Nelson followed with a towering shot to shallow left field that was dropped by Josh Anderson; the fielding error allowed Dillon to advance to third and Nelson to reach second.

 

Rottino then worked the count to 3-2 when Estrada?s payoff pitch got away from catcher Danny Ardoin and allowed Dillon to score the game-winner.

Sounds reliever Luther Hackman (1-0) got the victory after throwing one perfect inning of relief and striking out one. Nashville starter Adam Pettyjohn received a no-decision, threw six innings allowing seven hits and only three earned runs while matching a personal season high by striking out six on 86 pitches.

 

Estrada (1-7) took the loss for the Express after giving up one hit and one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning.

 

The teams continue the series on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Nashville?s R.A. Dickey (5-4, 4.81) will take the hill against Round Rock right-hander Juan Gutierrez (4-7, 4.02).

Wild pitch in ninth gives Sounds win

The Sounds walked off in winning fashion after a Round Rock error on Sunday.

 

Joe Dillon scored after a wild pitch by Paul Estrada, and the Sounds beat the Express 5-4 at Greer Stadium. It was the eighth last at-bat victory for the Sounds and their sixth at home this season.

 

Acting Sounds Manager Harry Spilman was happy to see his team fight through a rough game.

 

"All wins are good wins," said Spilman who is filling in for Frank Kremblas, who is tending to a undisclosed family situation. "We missed some opportunities, but found a way to scrap together a victory."

 

Dillon had reached third after left fielder Josh Anderson dropped a fly ball.

 

Sounds pitcher Adam Pettyjohn started off the first inning strong, striking out two, and had six strikeouts in five innings. Pettyjohn also allowed seven hits and four runs.

 

Dillon committed a fielding error, allowing two runs to score. However, he would atone for his mistakes in the bottom half of the second with a leadoff triple, scoring on a single by Brad Nelson. Jose Macias added an RBI single in the third.

 

In the top of the fourth inning, Pettyjohn gave up back-to-back home runs to Round Rock first baseman Cody Ransom and third baseman Danny Klassen making the score 4-2.

 

"I was really frustrated by the home runs," Pettyjohn said. "But the team played good enough to get the win."

 

The Sounds answered in the bottom of the sixth when Macias lead off with a single and Dillon followed up with an RBI double. Dillon would score on a passed ball to tie the game.

 

Nashville's bullpen held the Express bats in check long enough for the Sounds offense to get the go ahead run. In three innings pitched, the bullpen shut out the Express lineup allowing one hit.

 

"We're just a bunch of grinders," center fielder Tony Gwynn Jr. said. "We knew were in for a battle."

Hot June: The Sounds finished June with a 20-8 record, the best in the Pacific Coast League. It was the club's first 20-win month since joining the PCL in 1998. Nashville's June ERA of 3.42 was the best in the PCL, but the team's .272 batting average ranked 12th among the 16 teams in the league.

 

Third baseman Joe Dillon tied for most home runs (10) and also had 29 RBIs.

 

Home, sweet home: The Sounds have won 27 of their last 35 home games, and hold the best home record in the PCL (28-12).

 

Start 'em up: The Sounds starting pitching staff has been almost unstoppable. Its 3.66 ERA is the best in the PCL. When a starter throws at least six innings at home, the Sounds are 22-2. The Sounds pitching staff leads the PCL with 655 strikeouts after Sunday's game.

 

Streaking: Third baseman Joe Dillon extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the bottom of the second with a triple out to right field. It is Nashville's fourth double-digit hitting streak of 2007.

 

The longest hitting streak for the Sounds this season belongs to Andy Abad (12). First baseman Brad Nelson hit safely in his fifth straight game.

 

Left fielder Drew Anderson had his 10-game hitting streak snapped, but has reached base safely in 11 straight games.

Brewers pound White Sox

The Great Falls White Sox ran out of comebacks before the Helena Brewers ran out of hits.

 

The Brewers pounded Sox pitchers for two doubles and 16 singles Sunday afternoon to beat Great Falls 9-5 in the opener of a three-game Pioneer League baseball series. The scene shifts to Helena tonight and Tuesday night for the second series of the season between the Northern Division rivals, who are tied at 7-6 in the standings.

 

The previous three nights against the Billings Mustangs, the White Sox staged magnificent rallies, winning in 15 innings Thursday, 12 innings Friday and then overcoming a 9-0 deficit to claim a 12-10 victory on Saturday.

 

But on a warm, muggy Sunday afternoon before 2,701 fans at Centene Stadium, the Sox ran out of fuel. They fell behind 2-0 and 3-2 before the Brewers scored three times in the sixth to grab a 6-2 advantage. Helena added three more in the ninth, but typically, the Sox went down swinging. They got back-to-back doubles from Matt Inouye and Dale Mollenhauer in the bottom of the ninth, but could get no closer than 9-5.

 

"You give up 18 hits, you're not going to win many baseball games," said Sox manager Chris Cron, who like his team, appeared a bit tired after the heroics of the past few nights.

 

"Our bullpen is tired, worn out after playing all those innings against Billings," he said.

 

"But you've got to tip your hat to Helena. They swung the bats well."

 

The good news for Sox pitching coach Curt Hasler was that his hurlers didn't walk any batters, didn't hit any batters and didn't have any wild pitches.

 

The bad news is that too many of the strikes thrown by the Sox were up in the zone.

 

"We had too many pitches on the outer half of the plate," said Cron. "I think we need to come inside and challenge the hitters."

 

Kurt Crowell led the Helena hit parade with a 4-for-5 effort that included both of his team's doubles. Caleb Gindl, batting .477 coming into the game, went 3-for-5, and Jon Lucroy boosted his .341 average with a 3-for-5 performance.

 

The lone Great Falls pitcher to enjoy any success was 23-year-old righthander Adam Bowman, who struck out five in two innings and didn't allow a hit.

 

Starter Johnnie Lowe yielded six hits in three innings, Alex Woodson was touched for eight hits in three frames, and Joey Doan was pounded for four safeties in the ninth.

 

The Sox had four doubles ? two each by C.J. Retherford and Inouye ? plus a long triple to right field by Jim Gallagher. Lyndon Estill drove in two runs with a pair of single.

 

But Helena starter Jose Garcia was in control for six solid innings and improved his record to 3-0.

 

The Sox plan to start lefty Kevin Skogley tonight in Helena, and will give third-round drfat pick John Ely his first start on Tuesday.
