And why put Ricky Bottalico in to put out a fire when he's been regularly lit up?

Maybe because he hasn't been 'regularly lit up'?

His ERA coming in was 3.21 (and afterwards, its still under 4), and he'd allowed fewer hits/IP. In his last 6 outings, he'd only allowed 1 run and 3 hits in 7 2/3 innings. There was absolutely nothing wrong with his performance to this point.

At the game today....sitting right behind Jenkins (front rooow!). He completely misjudged Fogg's double, but IMO....made up for it throwing a runner out at 3rd an inning or two later. It's just sick how accurate his throwing arm can be.

I can't help but wonder how the game might have played out if the Brewers had brought in JDLR after DD....since he's the only reliever in the game who didn't allow a run. That said, even if JDLR throws a complete inning or two, no one else in the pen seemed to be getting the job done.

Only two things about this game that don't fall in the realm of disappointing:

- the kids (Weeks' HR & J.J.'s doubles)

- finding a DD mini-bobble after the game http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif

Feel my pain, I saw it in person too (and I only found empty Sharpie bobblehead boxes after the game). The dude on WTMJ called it a fiasco, a debacle, and the wackiest game of the year. (Then he kept saying, "at least they fought to the end.")

Random thoughts and reactions to this game thread:

Powell and Mclendon in the parking lot after the game.

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

This made me laugh. JP sounded PO'd right after the "secret" protest was announced. Waste the time of 30,000 (OK, 28+K) fans and then don't even explain why? I was with him on that. I could have been packing.

On the way out I was hoping there might be some way that the Brewers could say, OK, you want to protest, we'll replay the game. But alas.

I really enjoyed the 8th page of this IGT. The one where the Brewers were building their 6 run lead? Remember that? I do. It was idyllic and so was that page of the thread.

the bullpen simply had a meltdown

During the game, I was trying to decide between "meltdown" and "implosion." I still can't decide which. Frankly, I prefer batman's theory that Ned and Mike decided to manage on LSD.

But for the casual observer games like this are good for business.

I agree (though I cringe to say it). A lot of the crowd seemed to be what some of us call 'casual fans' - not that I want to bring that issue back - and largely "in the game" from start to finish. They were going crazy for Jenkins in the 9th while I sat glowering and thinking cynical GIDP thoughts.

If you like a wacky slugfest and don't care to focus on Ned's in-game decisions, you probably shrugged at the end of the game and went home reasonably happy.

Otherwise, I'm as speechless as many of you were.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I was at the game as well. That contest had a little bit of everything. I didn't read through the game thread but the one thing that really PO'd me was Davis failing to back up that throw to home. I mean they teach you that in little league. What's he doing standing in the batter's box? Other than that this one is chalked up to bullpen implosion and stellar Pittsburgh D. Redman stole two base hits, Wilson another, and Bay made a fantastic (turns out game saving) catch at the wall. Anyway, I am comforted slightly by the fact that the team seems to be hitting and was able to claw back into a position to win in the ninth. I just hope the pitching we saw today is not indicative of what we'll see in the second half.

July 3rd in Milwaukee there is a huge fireworks show. I live about a five minute walk from where you can see the fireworks so we've had a party here each year I've lived here. This year was no exception and luckily for me, we had to prep the yard and food for the party so I could only half listen to the game.

I'm a lucky man.
