7/26/05 D-Backs (Webb) @ Brewers (Capuano) 7:05 CST/Bad Mojo

Whoo Hoo! My first game thread.

Brandon Webb ® 8-7, 4.03 ERA

vs.

Chris Capuano (L) 11-6, 3.80 ERA

The Brewers are looking on edging one game closer to the .500 mark. Brandon Webb who missed last night's start due to the flu, will be pitching tonight. The Crew may be catching Webb at the right time. So far in July, Webb is 0-3 with a 7.46 ERA in 4 starts. If the Brewers win tonight, they will automatically move within 5.5 games of the wildcard leader as a result of the Washington/Atlanta matchup tonight.

Webb's coming off of 3 bad starts and the flu? Smells like a Cy Young performance coming up tonight. The trick with Webb is getting his pitch count up. He's one of those guys that will shut you out for 5-6 innings and then get rocked as his pitch count rises.

Seriously though, nice pitching matchup tonight.

They will automatically not move within 5.5 games of the wildcard. One team has to win, creating an impossible situation for the crew to gain a game on the leader.

It's all good.

Win first. Then let's see what the standings say. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Hopefully Cappy can stay on an even keel pitching against his old team. Brandon Webb is not exactly the Brewers type of pitcher. With a bunch of fly ball hitters in the Brewers lineup, a sinker ball pitcher could really give them fits.

Score early. Score often.

I'm real excited as I'm going to the next 2 games. It should be a great coupld of days of baseball.

I really want to get to that .500 mark on this road trip because in today's landscape if you can be .500 heading into August, you are in the wild card race, whether you're good enough to win it remains to be seen.

I just want to jump one team at a time. If we could catch Florida during this homestand and then catch the Mets/Phillies when we play them next week all of a sudden we are right in the thick of it. We can not afford to lose series to teams we can beat though. It starts tonight. I big bunch of winnable games that the crew WILL WIN!!!!

Let's go Cappy...keep it rollin'.

Wrong. A win tonight moves Milwaukee to within 5.5 of the WC lead. Period. It doesn't matter what else goes on. Assuming Wash and Atl play to a finish the Brewers will be 5.5 out with a victory. The winner of the ATL/Wash game would become a division leader by a game and the loser will become the WC frontrunner. Milwaukee is guarenteed to pick up a full game tonight with a win.

Wow, i just saw Cappy's record and i'm quite amazed that he's been able to get 11 wins and only 6 losses .. If we play about .500 ball the rest of the way.. he might end up with 18 wins or so. that'd be incredible! In fact, if he just maintains what he has been doing and we give him some support, with a little luck we could have a 20 game winner

On this day in Baseball History July 26, 1962

Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves set the National League record for career home runs by a pitcher when he hit his 31st off New York's Craig Anderson. Spahn dealt the Mets their 11th straight loss with a 6-1 victory.

Where have all those hitting pitchers gone is my question.

I happened across this pic of the press box at County Stadium - man that's wretched.

Since we are talking about Newfield I have to briefly mention how I informed him that his name was misspelled on his uni. I had "on deck" seats that I got from work which were first row right next to the on deck circle. There was a pitching change going on and Newfield was warming up in the circle and my friend and I noticed that his uni said NEWFEILD. Being in the first row it wasn't hard to get his attention. He didn't believe us at first but then strolled near the dugout and turned around. He must have gotten confirmation from his mates that it was spelled wrong and he just started giggling and shrugged his shoulders. The next day, I made sure to look, and it was corrected.
