09/05/05 Brewers (Ohka) @ Reds (Claussen) 6:10 CST

In what could be dubbed:

"the battle of an Ohkra and a Pickle", Milwaukee opens a brief three game road trip at Cincy.

Scouting Report:

Ohka has not been as sharp of late, despite going 2-1 in his last four starts. He has surrendered at least eight hits in three of those games and at least four earned runs in each of his last two starts. He's 3-12 lifetime in September despite a 3.33 ERA, his best of any month but May.

Claussen will try to get back to his winning ways Monday. Before losing a shutout to the Astros on Tuesday, he had been on a tear, during which he won his last five decisions. The left-hander was 4-1 with a 3.58 ERA during August. A win over Milwaukee would be his first in three starts against the Brewers this season.

Pitching matchup

MIL: RHP Tomo Ohka

? 9-7, 4.06 ERA in 2005

? 0-2, 7.30 ERA vs. CIN in 2005

CIN: LHP Brandon Claussen

? 9-9, 4.38 ERA in 2005

? 0-2, 8.56 ERA vs. MIL in 2005

-I used to have a neat-o signature, but it got erased.

Lyle has crushed Claussen in the past but it's only over 13 AB. Not much of a sample size to draw conclusions from.

As a whole I've never really understood the logic behind "Player A has batted .600 against team B." Are we supposed to believe that Lyle will crush the Reds no matter the pitcher?

Maybe not, but 9-for-13 with 4 HRs cannot be ignored. And I'm sure Claussen is aware of this as well.

In even smaller sample sizes, Helms (5-for-8, HR) and Clark (4-for-7) have both had success. The rest of the team has more or less "struggled" in their few ABs vs the lefty.

On the flip side, Adam Dunn (6-for-12, 2 HR) has the most success vs Ohka. In very limited ABs, Javier Valentin is 3-for-6 and Wily Mo Pena is 2-for-6 with a HR.

I like JJ in the 8 spot (and even the two spot)... he takes lots of pitches.. and I like his walks in the 8 hole... you gotta like it, at worst it forces the pitcher to throw more pitches and we get to the top of our order quicker.

JJ is doing a stand up job.
