9/11/05 Astros (Oswalt) @ Brewers (Helling) 1:05 CST

Well, this is going to suck. I have NO confidence about today -at all- Helling has no business whatsoever being a starter. I think we're gonna get killed. Sorry.

Rick Helling will aim for his first win as a starter in more than two years when the Brewers and Astros meet in the rubber match of a three-game series at Miller Park on Sunday.

The hurler will match up against Astros right-hander Roy Oswalt, who is 14-5 with a 2.83 ERA in 22 career starts in September, including wins in 10 of his last 11 September decisions.

Helling, a Major League veteran who spent most of the 2005 season in the Minors, is winless in his three Brewers starts since moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation, but has improved each time out. Helling's best start was his most recent one, when he pitched five innings in Cincinnati, allowing no runs and four hits. Helling was lifted in favor of a pinch-hitter because the Brewers were looking to spark a quiet offense.

Helling's last start against the Astros was on June 27, 2002, when he pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks. His 91 career wins are the most by any Brewers starter.

Pitching matchup

HOU: RHP Roy Oswalt

? 17-11, 2.84 ERA in 2005

? 1-1, 1.20 ERA in 2005 vs. MIL

MIL: RHP Rick Helling

? 1-0, 3.13 ERA in 2005

? 0-0, 0.00 ERA in 2005 vs. HOU

"We're starting to pick it up a little offensively. Doug [Davis] is mixing in some hits. 'Cappy' [Chris Capuano] is mixing in some hits. Helling can swing it." -- Brewers manager Ned Yost, on his pitchers' hitting prowess. Brewers pitchers rank last in the National League in batting.

Rick Helling could not:

1. Get the ball over the plate if he used a beach ball

2. Throw with any heat if he set the ball on fire.

3. Fool a hitter if he had David Copperfield on the hill with him.

4. Win a game if spotted a 10 run lead.

5. Break 85 MPH if he drove the ball around in his car.

6. Have good command if he were in charge of a Girl Scout Troop.

7. "Go the distance" in a 2 meter race.

8. Intimidate a 4 year old.

9. Paint the corners with a power sprayer.

10. Get hot if he were standing on the equator wearing a fur coat.
