Brewer makes Power pick

Power Manager Mike Guerrero to pitch to Prince Fielder for All-Star Home Run Derby

Jacob Messer

Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter

Kanawha Valley (W.V.)baseball fans will see a familiar face Monday night when they watch the State Farm Home Run Derby on ESPN.

The Milwaukee Brewers have chosen West Virginia Power Manager Mike Guerrero to pitch to All-Star first baseman Prince Fielder during the popular competition, which will be part of the festivities at Major League Baseball's 78th annual midsummer classic at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The State Farm Home Run Derby is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (EDT).

Guerrero called the honor "a blessing from heaven."

"It's special," he said Thursday night, when West Virginia earned a 6-5 victory over visiting Asheville at Appalachian Power Park.

Also in the eight-man field with Fielder are Florida Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who is the defending champion.

Fielder leads the National League with 27 home runs. Howard and Cabrera have hit 20 and 17, respectively.

The other five contestants haven't been determined.

"My job is to serve up those steaks right there," said Guerrero, holding his right hand waist high.

Guerrero was Fielder's hitting coach at Class A Beloit (Wis.) in 2003, when the super-sized slugger won the Midwest League's Most Valuable Player award after hitting .313 with 27 homers, 81 runs and 112 RBI.

"I know him pretty well," said Guerrero, who also was selected to manage the Northern Division squad at last month's South Atlantic League All-Star Game in Rome, Ga. "He's a great guy. I want to thank him and everyone else for giving me this opportunity."

Guerrero will travel to San Francisco on Sunday and return to Charleston on Wednesday, when West Virginia is scheduled to begin a three-game homestand against Hickory.

Power hitting coach Corey Hart will fill in for Guerrero on Sunday and Monday, when West Virginia is scheduled to play at Lexington.

Tuesday is an off day for the low Class A club.

"I'm not 100 percent sure whether I want to be a manager in the future," Hart said, "but it has definitely entered my mind. I'm sure (this experience) will have a lot to do with my decision later in life."

Hart was the hitting coach for high Class A Brevard County (Fla.) last season. He said he had an opportunity to manage the Manatees for six games.

That is why he knows what to expect Sunday and Monday.

"I'm going to be over there in the third-base coach's box," he said. "You're really running the game offensively over there. You're sending runners or holding them. It happens really fast. It's hard to make an adjustment."

Guerrero has confidence in Hart, who has helped the Power (56-27 overall, 8-7 second half) post a league-leading .298 batting average.

"All he has to do is follow my lead," said Guerrero, who led the Power to the Northern Division's first-half title with a 48-20 record. "Just follow my patterns. Don't change any strategies. Just continue to do things the way we have been doing things."

Cubs lose! Cubs lose! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Arizona Brewer Box Score:

Dominican RHP Luis Guerrero turned 17 two weeks ago -- check out that pitching line! While we're still waiting for Rolando Pascual, and Wily Peralta's hurt, maybe an unheralded gem has been uncovered, that'd be sweet; another 17-year-old, 3B Edgar Trejo, remains the most exciting positional prospect with a double, two singles, and a sac fly; Matt Whiteside two more base hits...

Rain delay to start in Jupiter, but once underway, it'll be LHP Steve Garrison for the Manatees.

It is Manny Parra in Nashville. I'm thinking that after needing long relief men both Tuesday and Wednesday, the Brewers would have had Parra in Milwaukee today if Ben Sheets had somehow come up with a two-or-three inning stinker Thursday, further taxing the pen.

Having cleared that potential issue, Manny pitches tonight in Oklahoma instead.

As far as the hitting streak goes, awesome for Mat Gamel to get it off of Volstad - a guy that I was concerned about due to his great stuff.

People can keep this comment in the archives to throw back in my face down the line, but I fully expect 6-7 Manatee position players to be in the majors at some point.

POWER USE SIX RUN FIFTH TO BEAT ASHEVILLE

The West Virginia Power snapped a 1-1 tie with a six run fifth inning on Friday night and took the series finale with an 8-2 victory over the Asheville Tourists at Appalachian Power Park.

Hector Gomez ripped a two-out triple in the third inning and scored on a wild pitch to give Asheville an early lead. West Virginia answered a half inning later on Andrew Lefave?s run-scoring double. In the fifth, the Power sent ten batters to the plate, and scored six runs on six hits to pull away. Brent Brewer hit the first of three RBI singles with one out before Chuckie Caufield and Andy Bouchie brought in runs with two-out singles. John Alonso capped off the inning with a three-run double off the wall in center field.

When brent Brewer isn't getting on base, he's striking out (two hits, three K's, 111 K's on the season); such an encouraging stint in low-A for Jeremy Jeffress thus far...

I'm truly excited about Jeffress now. It's nice to see performance along with development. Especially since part of development is making adjustments and getting batters out. That's how one learns how to pitch. It's too bad Rogers got hurt, it looked like he was finally starting to turn the corner last year. Here's to Mark pulling a Manny.

Final: Brevard County 3, Jupiter (Marlins) 0

Brevard County Box Score:

Great night for Steve Garrison, his strikeout numbers have been down, so the seven K's add to the impressiveness of a scoreless stint; Manatees did all their damage in the first inning; Darren Ford three steals on the night; Mat Gamel, as noted earlier, eliminates the suspense early on to reach 33;

Dillon Powers Sounds To 5-4 Win Over 'Hawks

OKLAHOMA CITY ? Joe Dillon homered and drove in three runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Oklahoma RedHawks on Friday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

The win was the second in a row for the Sounds (53-35), who continue to lead the PCL American Conference Northern Division by five games.

Oklahoma jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Sounds starter Manny Parra, plating a single run in the second inning and adding two more in the third.

Dillon brought Nashville within a run in the fourth when he slugged his team-leading 17th home run of the year, a one-out, two-run shot to left off RedHawks starter Eric Hurley.

The Sounds pulled into the lead two innings later, taking a 4-3 advantage in the sixth. Callix Crabbe singled to open the frame and Chris Barnwell walked before both runners advanced to third on a Hurley wild pitch. Laynce Nix plated Crabbe with the tying run on an RBI groundout before Dillon pushed the Sounds ahead by a run when he followed with a sacrifice fly.

Drew Anderson ripped an RBI triple in the seventh to plate Ozzie Chavez and increase the visitors? advantage to 5-3.

The RedHawks made it a one-run game again at 5-4 in the eighth when Dave Matranga plated former Sound Nelson Cruz with a two-out single off Nashville reliever Tim Dillard.

Oklahoma had the potential tying run on third base with only one out in the bottom of the ninth against Greg Aquino. Tug Hulett drew a one-out walk then moved to third when he stole second and catcher Vinny Rottino misfired into center field for a throwing error.

Aquino recovered to strike out Jason Botts and Nate Gold in order to escape the jam and secure his first save of the year.

Parra (3-1) earned a win for his third straight start after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in five innings of work. Hurley (1-2) took the loss for Oklahoma after giving up four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

First baseman Brad Nelson went 1-for-4 for Nashville to extend his longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games, the Sounds? fourth double-digit streak of the year.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. CT meeting on Saturday. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (3-2, 4.25) will take the hill for Nashville to face Oklahoma right-hander Mike Wood (7-1, 2.44).

Timely Hiiting and Bullpen Send Stars to Win

Alcides Escobar knocked in two runs, including the tying run in a decisive three-run seventh inning, and the bullpen tossed three shutout frames in Huntsville?s 5-3 win over Tennessee Friday night in the third of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 8-11 in the second half and 45-42 overall, while the Smokies dropped to 10-9 in the second half to fall two games behind North Division leading Chattanooga, which picked up a win at Mississippi.

Adam Heether and Michael Brantley singled to open the seventh inning against Mark Holliman and advanced a base on Carlos Corporan?s second sacrifice bunt of the night. Escobar then singled into center field to plate Heether to get the game knotted at three, while Brantley advanced to third base. Pinch-hitter Ryan Crew hit a ground ball to third and Matt Craig?s throw to second base pulled Gary Cates off the bag, allowing Escobar to reach safely and Brantley to score the go-ahead run. Mel Stocker singled to load the bases and knock Holliman out of the game before a Hernan Iribarren sacrifice fly off Rocky Roquet completed the rally. Holliman suffered the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks, while fanning five. He had no-hit the Stars in his first start against them on June 21 in the first of a doubleheader at Smokies Park.

Brantley?s run-scoring single and an Escobar sac fly in the second staked Derek Miller to an early 2-0 lead in his first double-A start. Tennessee took the lead with three runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Matt Craig and a run-scoring two-bagger by Chris Robinson. Miller allowed three runs on eight hits over six frames, while issuing four walks and striking out four.

Steve Hammond worked a scoreless seventh to pick up the win and was aided by Brantley, who threw out Jemel Spearman trying to score from third base on a shallow fly ball to left field. The Stars turned a season-high four double plays, including three that ended innings. Jeff Housman yielded singles to Craig and Tyler Colvin to open the eighth prior to a sacrifice bunt by Issmael Salas, the fourth of the game for the visitors. Robinson grounded out to third on a fine play by Adam Heether that kept the runners stationary before Marino Salas retired the last four hitters to earn his 15th save of the season.

The series wraps up Saturday afternoon with Huntsville southpaw Sam Narron making the start against Smokies? left-hander Donnie Veal. Coverage of the game begins at 1:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

In the last 20 years, only five hitting streaks in all of minor league baseball have been longer than Mat Gamel's still-active 33 game streak. Those streaks are detailed in a chart at this link from prior to Friday's game:
