Remember, Talkin' Brewers at noon!

Drew Olson:

Phoenix - Utility man Bill Hall will the starting centerfielder today as the Milwaukee Brewers face San Diego at Maryvale Baseball Park. Manager Ned Yost plans to use Hall in center three times in the final week of camp, beginning today.

"I just want to give Billy some experience out there,'' Yost said, noting that center field is considered the easier of the three outfield spots to play. "In case we have to make a double-switch (during the season), we want him to be ready.''

Here are the lineups for today's game:

San Diego

1, Dave Robersts, lf

2, Mike Cameron, cf

3, Brian Giles, rf

4, Doug Mirabelli, c

5, Ryan Klesko, 1b

6, Mark Bellhorn, 2b

7, Geoff Blum, ss

8, Justin Leone, 3b

9, Shawn Estes, p

Interesting that Rottino is still getting starts this late in ST. Yesterday in LF and today at 3rd. I realise that Weeks' injury and Yost's desire to give Hall some time in CF have a little to do with it. Still, coupled with Melvin's comments on Rottino in his chat yesterday it has to be encouraging for Rottino.

Edit: Beat me to the comment.

From this week's Doug Melvin chat (with Vinny getting the start today):

John_Morey: What are Vinny Rottino's chances of making the squad? He has had a great spring.

Melvin: Vinny had a very good Spring Training and we all root for him. I would be surprised if he's not in the big leagues sometime during the season.

also, in a pinch can he play a passable SS? He seems at least offensively capable to be better than many backups.

I doubt it. I don't think he'd be that much better than a guy like Helms at 3B, judging from the few times I've seen him.

He's not all that big. I guess I figured 5'10-6', maybe 180-190 lbs, so that's why I was wondering about his range.

A little on the Melvin interview

Bullpen building - we don't have the money to buy a bigtime closer. just look for good live arms that have done same role in minors. we like our bullpen depth. castro is a great pen coach.

Jared Fernandez - pretty good chance of making the team. Getting a lot outs w/ the knuckle ball. May be worried a bit of opposing teams running when he's in the game, but our catchers are showing ability to catch him. Great thing about him, can start, relieve, or whatever and give a ton of innings.

The young guys - they need to gain respect of the vets and they've been doing it (Hardy, Fielder, Weeks). Rickie is fine, but Monday he'll be ready.

Bill Hall - gonna start 3 games in CF at end of spring training. Looking to get him 450-500 at bats. Great team player.

On th WBC - Big supporter and too bad Sheets couldn't pitch in it b/c of health (wished Ben could've done it). Rubbed in the Canadian victory about 3 times (maybe more).

Sorry if this is not game related....not real important, but good between inning reading.

On Talkin' Brewers Today Jim Powell said that Vinny could play shortstop in a pinch, is that where you got that from. If Powell said it, than it must be true.

He played SS in college at my alma mater, Wisconsin - La Crosse. Obviously, that is a lot different than playing SS in the big leagues, but I think its safe to say Vinny could play SS in an emergency. He probably doesn't have enough range to spend a lot of time there. But, if Hardy or Hall goes down and the other is also injured or has been removed from the game, Rottino could finish the game there at the very least.
