Four in a row! 6-3 overall, unbeaten at home -- that's the way to keep Indy management and fans happy....

 

Just caught the last few innings of this one. Down 3-0 early, the Tribe rallies for single runs in the 4th and 7th, and two in the eighth.

 

Pete Zoccolillo drove in the winning run with a looping single after singles by Mark Budzinski and Scott Seabol (on a perfect hit-and-run), a run-scoring groundout by Cody McKay, and a hit batter.

 

Brooks Kieschnick with three sweet scoreless innings of relief to get his first professional win; Roberto Giron with a perfect ninth (2 K's -- he's really dealing) gets his third save.

 

McKay homered in the fourth off of 6'11" White Sox prospect Jon Rauch, his second HR of the year.

Beloit, WI ? The Kane County Cougars extended their winning streak to five straight games, winning 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Pohlman Field. Shane Komine (2-0) earned his second straight win, dominating the Snappers with seven scoreless innings. Komine allowed six hits, one walk, and tied a professional high with eight strikeouts. Calvin Carpenter (0-1), who made his first start of the season, was charged with the loss. Carpenter struggled with control, walking five batters, and allowing three runs (all unearned) on just two hits.

 

The Cougars took advantage of two walks and one error to score three unearned runs in the fourth inning. Kory Wayment and John Baker drew walks with Nelson Cruz reaching on a third baseman?s error. Brian Stavisky plated home the first run with an RBI ground out, and Jason Basil had the biggest hit of the game- a two-out, two run single to left field.

 

In the sixth inning, the Cougars took a 4-0 lead with a run off reliever Gabe Mendoza. Cruz started the rally with a single to left, advanced to second base, and scored on Stavisky?s RBI single to right field. It was just the third hit in 19 at-bats for Stavisky, who finished the game 2-for-4, with two RBIs.

 

Kane County put Beloit away in the seventh inning, adding two more runs off Mendoza. John Baker picked up his 5th RBI of the series, with a run-scoring single to right field. Nelson Cruz capped off the scoring by reaching on a fielder?s choice, plating home Brant Colamarino.

 

Shawn Kohn gave up two runs in the eighth, but Jeff Muessig pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to preserve the win. If the Cougars win tomorrow, it will be the best start after ten games in franchise history (8-2, 1999 best start).

 

The Cougars and the Beloit Snappers play game three of their four game set on Sunday afternoon ? game time is 2:00 PM. LHP Bill Murphy (0-1, 2.25) will face LHP Manny Parra (1-0. 1.80), the series wraps up on Monday night at Pohlman Field.

Indy Site Game Summary:

 

INDIANAPOLIS -- On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the Circle City, the Indianapolis Indians (6-3) staged yet another late-inning comeback to remain undefeated at Victory Field in 2003 with a 4-3 win over the Charlotte Knights. The Tribe is 4-0 on the homestand.

 

Indians starting pitcher Mark Guerra was roughed up early allowing three runs, two earned, in his first two innings on the mound before settling down to retire seven of the next 10 batters faced, including three strikeouts.

 

6'11" Charlotte starter Jon Rauch, the tallest pitcher in Major League Baseball history, held the Indians in check throughout the early innings of the ballgame. It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth inning when catcher Cody McKay belted a solo home run to right field, that the Indians finally were able to put a run on the board and cut the score to 3-1.

 

Rauch lasted six innings allowing five hits and one run while striking out five, and was relieved in the top of the seventh by lefthander Arnie Munoz. Munoz retired McKay leading off the inning, then gave up a single to Mark Smith and hit DH Pete Zoccolillo with a pitch. Gary Majewski was then called on to face second baseman Bill Hall with one out in the inning and runners on first and second. Hall reached base on an error by shortstop Jorge Nunez, and Majewski walked Tribe third baseman Wilton Veras with the bases loaded on only four pitches to bring the Indians to within one run at 3-2. Majewski was then able to pitch out of the jam without any further damage by striking out Steve Scarborough and getting Jason Conti to pop out to Nunez to end the inning.

 

Brooks Kieshnick, who had already pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh innings, returned to the mound for the eighth inning and struck out leadoff batter Willie Harris. After Tim Hummel was hit by a Kieshnick pitch and center fielder Joe Borchard singled, Cliff Brumbaugh topped one back to Kieschnick for an inning-ending double play. Kieschnick (1-0) earned the first win of his career.

 

The Tribe then went into the home half of the eighth still trailing by a run. Mark Budzinski and Scott Seabol led off the inning against Majewski with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third with nobody out. McKay then picked up his second RBI of the game with a ground ball out to short. After Mark Smith was hit by a Majewski pitch and Seabol advanced to third on a wild pitch, Zoccolillo stepped to the plate and looped a single over the outstretched glove of second baseman Willie Harris to score Seabol and give the Tribe their first lead of the ballgame at 4-3. Ryan Kohlmeier relieved Majewski with one out in the eighth and retired the only two batters he faced to end the inning.

 

Roberto Giron took the mound for the Tribe in the ninth and, with the crowd on their feet, retired Charlotte in order striking out the final two batters for his third save of the season.

 

The two teams will face each other again on Sunday in the final game of a three game series, and also the final game of the Indians' five game homestand. Charlotte's Mike Porzio (1-0) and Indianapolis' Jamey Wright (1-1) are the scheduled starters for Sunday's 2:00 contest.

Lake Elsinore (Padres) 10, High Desert 7

 

High Desert Site Game Summary:

 

ADELANTO, CA ? The wind certainly played a roll in Saturday?s game, as the Lake Elsinore Storm beat the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 10-7, at Mavericks Stadium. Mike Richardson?s first home run of the year snapped a 6-6 tie in the ninth inning, as the Storm took the lead for good. The ball barely cleared the fence in left field as the wind was gusting between 30-40 MPH all day long. Both teams had their fair share of wind-aided hits, Richardson?s home run was just the most damaging.

 

The Storm took the lead in the first as Freddy Guzman?s pop-up to left field also cleared the wall for his first homer of the year and a 1-0 advantage. The Mavs countered with Daryl Clark?s two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the inning. The Storm got two runs off Mavs starter Brian Mazone in the third, but the Mavs would tie the game at 3-3, as Brian Foster, who had four staples put into his head less than 24 hours before, knocked in Kade Johnson with an RBI single.

 

The Storm took a 5-3 lead in the fourth, as Josh Barfield crushed a home run to center field off Mavs reliever David Nolasco, and Joe Gerber added an RBI hit. They added one more in the fifth, as Danny Bravo knocked in Eddie Serrano with a two-out hit.

 

The Mavs rallied for one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Ralph Santana?s RBI double off the wall in the eighth, scored Scott Candelaria. Johnny Raburn?s groundball brought home Santana for a 6-6 tie. Aaron Dean (0-2), who had retired all four men he had faced coming into the ninth, gave up the homer to Richardson and then three more runs as the Storm took a commanding 10-6 lead. Clark led off the ninth with a home run to left off Mike Wodnicki that just cleared the fence, to bring the Mavs to within three. Wodnicki (1-0) settled down in the ninth, and after walking Foster, got Jason Belcher to ground into a double play to end the Maverick threat. Froilan Villanueva grounded out to earn Wodnicki his first win of the year. Clark finished the day 5-5 with two homers and three RBIs.

 

The Mavs are now 3-6 and three games out of first, behind the 6-3 Storm.

 

The final game of the series features Mavs right-hander Danny Kolb (0-0) against Josh Reynolds (0-0) at 3:05 on Sunday afternoon.

 

Clark's big night gets his average to .421 (16-for-38); mix in five walks for a .488 OBP. Not sure how high Clark's ceiling is, but Daryl is probably the best corner outfield prospect in the system right now. We checked with High Desert, and while a few teammates call him D.J. and he's not bothered by it, Daryl probably works best for him, so we'll go with that on the Link Report going forward.

Even if you weren't looking at a sweet group of position players, the Huntsville starting rotation, 1 thru 5, has a decent chance of dominating nearly every night. These 24 guys are going to get some serious national pub before all is said and done this summer -- enjoy the ride...

Jones (1-0) yielded the only two hits of the game for Jacksonville, a single in the first inning and a double in the fourth, and struck out four and issued two walks for the win. J.J. Hardy connected on a solo home run in the first inning for Huntsville. Ryan Knox hit a two-run single and Brandon Gemoll added an RBI double during a five-run seventh inning rally for the Stars, who have won two in a row. RHP's Tim Crabtree and Matt Childers combined to no-hit the Suns over the final three innings. Koyie Hill and Tarrik Brock each had a hit for Jacksonville. 22 INNINGS OF GOOSE EGGS

 

Hoover Met, home to the Birmingham Barons, is comfortably regarded as toughest hitter's park in the league........ It's too early to cast such claim on the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, but this is a quirky park that is 420' to straightaway center -- deeper than any major league park. Dave Krynzel played this park the last two nights with plenty of room in back of him....... The lines are short. The right field porch is 315'. With a 5-foot fence. But the lines shoot out similar to Camden Yards in Baltimore. A lot of room in the gaps, since there is not much foul territory as an accommodation to the fans........ This park was almost custom-made for the Suns (best ERA in the Southern League last year) and the Dodgers' minor league philosophy......... It was built to be a pitcher's park.......

 

But it works both ways. The Stars found the Grounds a more friendly home to them than the Suns....... For the second straight night, the Suns were blanked by the heralded Stars' pitching staff, and in so doing, the Stars take over 1st place in the Western Division......... It also extends a scoreless string by Stan Kyles' pitching staff of 22 innings, going back to Wednesday.

 

If there was any question before whether Mike Jones belongs in Double-A, he settled it for the moment....... Walking only two batters, and pitching shutout ball for 6 innings giving up 2 hits, Jones showed he's there to stay to fans and critics alike...... Matched up with a pitcher of similar background -- a low A ball hurler last year, regarded by the Dodgers as their best RH pitching prospect, making the leap to Double-A, Jones easily outdueled and outlasted Edwin Jackson, a turnaround from last Sunday's Duel I match-up.

 

The Stars got all the offense they needed when J.J. Hardy poked a 2-2 pitch out of the park to left in the 1st inning....... That kept alive Hardy's hitting streak at 9 games --- the 6th best hitting streak at the start of a season in Stars history (the list is on the standings page)........ Jones would retire 9 of the first 10 hitters, but in the bottom half of the 1st, he pitched himself out of trouble when Koyie Hill singled and stole 2nd base off the manager's brother, Brian Moon's replacement, Mike Kremblas, but Jones struck out Tarrik Brock to end the inning.

 

Ryan Knox made it 2-0 in the 3rd inning when on a hit-and-run play with Krynzel on first, Edwin Jackson's pitch got away from Hill. Knox alertly scored........ The Stars put the game in the freezer in the 7th inning........ After Derek Michaelis botched a play on a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd, Knox poked a 1-2 pitch into right field scoring Richard Paz and Kremblas to make it 4-0.......... Corey Hart bounced a 2-out pitch up the middle, scoring Knox to make it 5-0........ Brandon Gemoll, who has done rather well in the clutch, delivered a 3-1 pitch into the right field corner for a double, scoring Hart to make it 6-0........ Cristian Guerrero followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring.

 

Hart continues to make an adventure out of playing 3rd base......... In the bottom of the 9th and one out, with Matt Childers trying to put it to bed, Corey made a great diving stab on a ground ball by Brennan King, but he threw the ball away. Childers struck out the next hitter, Michaelis, but Kremblas let the 3rd strike go off his glove, allowing Michaelis to reach 1st and moving King to 3rd. Needing a double play to preserve the shutout, Childers got Michael Collins to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

 

Pedro Liriano (0-1, 5.40) takes his turn tomorrow against Eric Stults (0-0, 19.29) making his first spot start of the season........ Alfredo Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list. Gonzalez, last Saturday, pitched one inning against Luis Martinez and left after making warm-up tosses in the 2nd inning.

 

The Stars have now made 17 errors in their first 9 games........ This had been done only five other times in club history after the first 10 games, so they are within two of tying the record of the 1991 team that made 19 errors, 10 games into the season....... Hart has six so far. Ryan Gripp and the departed Brian Moon each have a pair.

Jeff Deardorff went 2-for-3, tripled and scored last Wednesday for his new team, the Rochester Red Wings as they defeated Scranton in the 2nd game of a double-header, 2-1......... Paul Stewart started the opener for the Pawtucket Red Sox on opening day April 3, going 3 innings and giving up an unearned run, striking out 1 and walking 3. To date, the Pawsox have played only three games because of nasty weather. Four games were snowed out and three were rained out....... Billy Hall and Steve Scarborough are hitting .091 and .050 respectively for the Indianapolis Indians....... Bobby Darula is hitting .308 for the Reds' top farm team, the Louisville Bats......... Bucky Jacobsen is 3-for-10 with the Tennessee Smokies........ Creighton Gubanich is 2-for-12 for the Chattanooga Lookouts.

 

The Stars became a Brewer affiliate in 1999. Only three Brewer farmhands opened a Stars' season with longer hitting streaks than J.J. Hardy's current nine-game streak. As David noted, he's keeping track of who J.J. is trying to catch:
