Charlotte (White Sox) 6, Indianapolis 5

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians (6-4) four-game winning streak was snapped at the hands of the Charlotte Knights (5-4) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-5, as the Tribe was unable to come through with yet another heroic comeback on the last day of a five-game homestand.

The Indians and Knights each hammered out 11 hits in the contest, and left a total of 12 men stranded. The difference in the ballgame, however, turned out to be two unearned runs that crossed the plate for Charlotte in the top of the third inning. Immediately following a leadoff single by Willie Harris, Tim Hummel hit a ground ball to Tribe shortstop Keith Luuloa for what appeared to be the makings of a double play, but Luuloa's throw was off the mark and rolled out into right field allowing both runners to advance, and eventually score. Harris scored on Joe Borchard's RBI groundout while Hummel crossed the plate on Ross Gload's two-run double which also plated Mario Valenzuela. Gload scored the fourth and final run of the inning on Jamie Burke's two-out single, and on the same play Anthony Sanders was tagged out at home plate by Jason Conti's relay throw to end the inning.

Charlotte then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on solo home runs by Harris and Valenzuela off of Indians starter Jamey Wright (1-2) to push the score to 6-2.

The Tribe responded with a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a triple by Conti followed by a single by Bill Hall, both with two men out, but Hall was then caught stealing on a pick off throw from Charlotte starter Mike Porzio (2-0).

The Tribe managed to plate two more runners in the seventh inning off of reliever Matt Ginter, but Dave Sanders and Edwin Almonte combined to shut the door over the final 2.2 innings for the 6-5 victory as Almonte recorded his fourth save of the year.

The Indians are off on Monday before traveling to Durham on Tuesday and Wednesday to start a nine-game road trip. The Tribe return to Victory Field on Thursday, April 24, to face the Toledo Mud Hens at 7:00 p.m.

Indianapolis Box Score:

The only head Jamey Wright is turning is his own; few things more irksome than when a farm team fails to draw a single walk in a game...

That's pretty cool that JimH5 (see separate thread) was able to attend in person -- sorry it wasn't a better game...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Huntsville Box Score:

Five Star errors lead to three unearned runs; Huntsville was only hitting .230 as a team heading into this one and didn't help themselves Sunday. J.J. Hardy runs his hitting streak to ten to start the season; David Krynzel did not start but did PH -- wonder if his leg is still bothering him...

Kane County (A's) 7, Beloit 5

Fielder showboats after HR #4 in six games...

Beloit Site Game Summary:

Not sure if the Snappers management is limited for space here, but I guess we'll take what we can get...

www.snappersbaseball.com/...43d0a22044

Kane County Game Summary:

More details here...

Beloit, WI ? The Kane County Cougars won their sixth straight game with a 7-5 victory over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. Bill Murphy (1-1) picked up his first Midwest League Win, pitching five solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Jared Burton entered the game in the 9th inning; surrendered two inherited runs, but got Mark Ernster on a line out to end the game. The Cougars tagged losing pitcher, Jason Baker (0-1), who gave up seven hits and four runs over five innings. The win for the Cougars improves their record to 9-1, marking the best start after 10-games in the team?s 13-year history (8-2 in 1999).

The Snappers started the game off in a positive way by taking their first lead of the series. The second batter of the game for Beloit, Callix Crabbe, blasted his first home run of season. The Cougars quickly rebounded, scoring three times in the top of the second inning, thanks to RBI?s from Jason Basil (2 RBI), Francis Gomez (2 RBI), and Nick Rogers.

Kane County took advantage of the Beloit bullpen, scoring three times off LH reliever Jeff Housman. In the sixth, Basil reached on an error with runners at first and third to plate home the fifth run. Gomez picked up an RBI on a fielder?s choice and Kory Wayment singled home the final run of the day for Kane County.

Prince Fielder greeted Chris Shank by blasting a lead off home run in the sixth inning. Shank would get ejected in the eighth inning when he plunked Fielder in the right leg. The Snappers used that energy and mounted a two run ninth, but the rally fell short.

John Baker and Brian Stavisky each had two hits to pace the offense, and for the second time of the series, all nine starters reached base.

The Cougars and Beloit complete their four-game series tomorrow night at Pohlman Field ? game time is 6:30 PM. Chris Mowday RHP (0-0, 2.45) goes opposite Tom Wilhelmsen RHP (0-0. 5.79).

The Snappers still maintain a nice Transactions page. Jeff Housman was a new addition to the roster; we'll provide details in the Transactions thread.

High Desert 10, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 9

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Mavs Hang On in Wild One

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks rallied three times to upend the Lake Elsinore Storm by a final score of 10-9 at Mavericks Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Daryl Clark?s second triple and third hit of the day broke a sxth inning tie, giving the Mavericks the win in the rubber game of the three-game series.

Clark, who went 5-5 on Saturday and missed a cycle by a triple, went 3-5 with two triples and a double, driving in two runs to give him the club lead with nine RBIs.

J.M. Gold came out of the Mavs pen to get his first win of the year. Tony Stavros and Bobby Bystrowski went the final three innings, holding the Storm scoreless. Bystrowski collected his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The Mavs went up 1-0 on Kade Johnson?s third homer of the year in the bottom of the first. The Storm scored five times in the second inning off Mavs starter Danny Kolb. Jon Benick?s second homer of the year made it 1-1. Mike Richardson hit his second homer of the year, making it 3-1, and Danny Bravo had a two-run triple to make it 5-1.

The Mavs rallied, scoring four times in their half of the second. Brian Foster led off the inning with his fourth homer of the season to make it 5-2. The Mavs tied it as Ralph Santana had an RBI single, and Todd West hit a two-run, two-out double.

The Storm took the lead in the third with two runs, but saw the Mavs tie the game at 7-7, when Froilan Villanueva picked up a two-out, two-run single.

After Kolb was chased, Gold came on and worked a scoreless fifth, but allowed a run in the sixth, when J.J. Furmaniak knocked in Joseph Hastings with a sac fly.

In the bottom of the inning Clark?s two-run triple gave the Mavs the lead for good at 10-8. The Storm got one back in the seventh, but Stavros got out of a jam to preserve the lead at 10-9.

The Mavs are now 4-6 and just two games back of Lake Elsinore (6-4) for the top spot in the South Division.

The Mavs hit the road to face Rancho Cucamonga on Monday, as LHP Pete Smart (1-1) faces Ervin Santana at 7:15 from the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. The Mavs return home on Thursday to face Lancaster.

Now, a new (and rare) Link Report Feature:

BLAST FROM THE PAST!

Actually, all this occasional feature does is call up a nice player profile piece from perhaps long ago on a particular farmhand. Unfortunately, the current Brewerfan Article Crawler Archive began just last fall, but we still know where to go to find an oldie but goodie and dust it off...

In this case, a sure way to earn kudos from Ye Ol' Link Report is to be an undrafted, unheralded kid who manages to make his mark within the Brewer organization. Although it looks like High Desert is settling on 26-year-old newcomer and converted outfielder Bobby Bystrowski as their closer, it's nice to see that RHP Tony Stavros is off to a nice start once again this year, coming off one heck of a 2002 campaign.

Hit the way-back machine, Mr. Wizard....

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

After 10 games, I usually do a simple chart comparing batting marks and ERAs over the history of the club. The results are on the Standings link, which is provided just below....... What came as no surprise to me, considering the pre-season hype, is how well the Stars pitching staff is doing at this phase. I expected it from the rotation........ The bullpen was beyond my expectations.

Ten games into the season, the bullpen has a 2.40 ERA --- the best in the 19-year history of the franchise....... The overall ERA isn't that bad either --- 2.85 --- best since 1996 and 3rd best in the Stars history........ You'll notice by looking at the chart that in the Stars two best seasons by their overall ERA, they had some bats backing them up, hence they got off to 7-3 and 8-2 starts in 1996 and 1995 respectively........

Starsboxscore.com Link:

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

The .226 overall batting average, though, isn't the only reason the Stars are off to a mediocre 5-5 start........ They have committed a record 21 errors after 10 games, as well......... Makes you want to look a little closer, so here we go......... The Stars have given up 42 runs, of which 31 were earned. Six of those ten games, the Stars pitching staff gave up at least one unearned run. In three of those games, the Stars lost........

One of those games was today's 7-1 loss, and in spite of all those errors, Pedro Liriano would have lost this one, anyway........ But errors made the difference between a 7-3 start and a 5-5 start. In a tight game, errors by RF Cristian Guerrero and 3B Corey Hart made a big difference in a 7-6 loss to Jacksonville in the 4th game of the season, and last Wednesday, RHP Ryan Miller's error allowed two unearned runs in a 6-5 loss to Orlando....... Better hitting might have resulted in better run production, but we can't pretend that into happening. What did, or rather, did not exist for the Stars was the defense that usually saves a lot of games over the course of a season.

The rotation, after ten games, has an ERA of 3.33. When is Liriano going to get on board? Without him, the ERA drops to 2.50....... Yeh, it's quibbling, but it's a difference of almost a run....... But Pedro has had two bad starts, giving up 7 earned runs in 9 IP and walking 8......... In the 2nd, he ended the Stars scoreless string at 23 when Mike Collins doubled in two runs and pitcher Eric Stults tripled in Collins for a 3-0 lead....... The first of the Stars' season-high five errors helped Jacksonville take a 4-0 lead........

Trailing 4-0, the Stars scored their lone run when J.J. Hardy drew a 1-out walk. Hart ripped a double to center, his 2nd of the year, scoring J.J....... Ryan Gripp followed with a deep drive to left-center field, but Jason Repko just has some kind of speed, and he was able to make a tremendous running catch, saving a run........Guerrero grounded out to Collins to end the inning........ Over the final five innings, the Stars advanced only two runners past 1st base.

Hardy hit a hanging breaking ball to left in the 7th inning to extend his hit streak to 10 games, marching toward the club record of 14 at the start of a season.

Ben Diggins (0-1, 2.52) gets the call, Monday against Orlando's Jose Veras (0-0, 1.00) for the start of the Stars very last trip to the House of Mouse. Next year, the Rays move to Montgomery, making the bus drivers in the league very happy (and G.M. Bryan Dingo, as well). It will also be the final look at the Florida teams for the Stars this season..........

There's a fan contest underway to name the new team and I wish I could find out when it ends, but the Montgomery Advertister has got to be the worst on-line newspaper on the web........ The Stars return home on Friday for a 4-game series against the Birmingham Barons........

Now that his early heroics are over, Ryan Knox has struck out 11 times in 34 at-bats, 10 of them in his last 29 ABs........ Joel Alvarado, our starting catcher now that Brian Moon is gone, is 0-for-13 with 4 Ks. I've got to find out how he is at erasing baserunners from Mr. Portnoy. Even if we get Brian Foster from High Desert at some point in the season, it won't make up for Moonie's defense. Alvarado got off to a 2-for-11 start last year after the Stars got him from Ogden, August 4.........Ryan Miller has taken the lead among the middle relievers, who as I've mentioned are off to a record start. After four relief appearances and 8 1/3 innings, he is unscored upon and has struck out 10 batters........ Derek Lee will start on Tuesday for the Stars. Ben Hendrickson reportedly has some tightness in forearm. It will be Derek's 121st appearance as a Huntsville Star, tying the club record held by Mike Maurer.
