Orlando (Devil Rays) 4, Huntsville 3, 15 innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Awesome, awesome game summaries from Stars' staff...thank you!

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=34

David Weiser provides some overnight analysis:

After praising the Stars bullpen last night for the best 10-game start in its history, we get this display Monday night....... Three hit batters and two balks makes you scratch your head........ The three hit batters by Matt Childers hadn't happened since Eric Dubose did it on September 9, 1998 in a playoff game vs. Mobile.......... I stopped at 1997 in finding the last time two balks were committed by the Stars pitching staff in a game. I'd wager it was 1988, though --- the year umpires really cracked down on pitchers and were calling a lot more balks than pitchers had ever been accustomed to. Bruce Walton committed 3 in a game in April that season....... But despite this, the pitching wasn't really bad tonight. The bullpen only gave up 2 earned runs in 9 innings. Pitching coach Stan Kyles said, "Childers made the pitches he needed to, to get out of some tough spots, and (Mike) Adams was splendid. He threw 39 pitches, 30 for strikes........"

Unfortunately, Adams may have been overworked tonight. Kyles admits that his bullpen has been overworked, and still they outperform....... So who could you have gone to in the 15th, Stan? Your only option was Matt Parker, so why wasn't he sent out? He hadn't pitched since Friday! He has a 1.29 ERA in 7 innings this young season........ Well, it's spilled milk now. Adams breaking pitch to Jonny Gomes was a bit flat and the mistake cost him as Gomes, the first batter in the 15th, parked the pitch over the left field wall to end the game. In the 2nd, Gomes hit a Diggins pitch that towered over the foul pole in left. Umpire Damian Beal, back for another season, had a good vantage point and made the call.

Kyles has a point though. The staff certainly has thrown a lot of innings so far this season...... The Stars have played 3 extra-inning games of the 11 played this season --- 13, 14, and now 15 innings........ I'm going to take a look at the innings the staff has pitched this season and compare it to seasons past and see if there is indeed some significance to it........ All these innings may ultimately have an affect down the stretch on these arms.

David may have a bit more later. His notes are a labor of love and we appreciate the analysis; hopefully he doesn't feel the need to burn the midnight oil each and every night, especially after a 15-inning affair...

Huntsville Box Score:

David Krynzel's digging himself an early-season hole: 5-for-31 with only one walk...Ryan Knox is a nice little player, but shouldn't Krynzel be hitting leadoff?

David Weiser wrapped up his Huntsville summary earlier today:

Orlando held a 1-0 lead till the 7th....... Corey Hart, who is now 8-for-28 (.286) in his last 6 games, led off with a single off the Rays' 2nd reliever, Bartolome Fortunato. Richard Paz followed with a successful hit-and-run single. As Hart aggressively slid in at 3rd, Amado Guzman's throw from center skipped into the dugout, allowing Hart to score and Paz to go to 3rd....... Cristian Guerrero then delivered Paz home with a single to right for a 2-1 lead.

In the 8th, after an error by Paz on a ground ball and a bunt single by Gabby Martinez, Matt Childers hit Victor Diaz on the shoulder with a pitch to load the bases. Childers then hit Dan Grummitt, forcing in a run, tying the game, and for the 2nd time in 4 meetings this season with Orlando, an error made the difference between a win and a loss for the Stars.

In the 12th, Mike Adams struck out Gomes on two sliders and a fastball with runners on 2nd and 3rd, to end the inning.

In the 14th, Brandon Gemoll led off with a double over Amado German in center. Paz walked. Then with Guerrero at the plate, 3rd baseman Jorge Cantu broke back to the bag, allowing him to sneak a single through the vacated spot, sending Gemoll to 3rd........ Of Guerrero's 10 hits this season, 7 of them have been infield singles....... Mike Kremblas struck out on a fastball at the knees, but the Stars took the lead again, 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by Chris Cosbey.

The Stars were just one out away from victory in the bottom half of the inning, but Felix Escalona doubled and Matt Diaz followed with a single and it went into the 15th inning and the rest is history.

Despite a couple of extended chances, J.J. Hardy's hit streak ended at 10 games, leaving Justin Bowles' record of 14 at the start of a season, safe for another year........ If gold is 5 and silver is 6, Dave Krynzel gets the platinum sombrero tonight for going 0-for-7. His average plummets to .161....... One of his teammates said Krinkles is a slow starter. I wonder if that's true?...... Guerrero is 7-for-18 (.389) in his last 4 games.

Derek Lee (1-0, 3.86) gets a spot start Tuesday, his first of the season........ It will be his 86th as a Huntsville Star and his 121st appearance, tying the club record held by Mike Maurer........Derek's career 3.23 ERA as a Huntsville Star ranks as the 3rd best of all-time.

Paul Stewart made his 2nd start of the season for Pawtucket tonight, but did not get the decision against Ottawa........ He did fine until the 5th inning when he allowed a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3. He gave up 8 hits in 5 1/3 innings and struck out one.
