TONIGHT: The Indians begin their longest road trip of the season, a nine-game affair that begins with two games in Durham. The pitching matchups will be identical to last week when the teams met for two games at Victory Field. The Tribe swept that series by scores of 4-2 and 6-4. Last year, the teams split 12 games including the six played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, although the Tribe recorded a two-game sweep on the first trip of the year. The Tribe has won four straight over the Bulls dating back to Aug. 3-4 of last year.

 

SUNDAY: Charlotte snapped the Tribe's four-game winning streak by a score of 6-5. Bill Hall went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI for the Indians, but Charlotte's four-run third inning was too much to overcome.

 

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Francisco Campos makes his third start of the year. Campos faced the Bulls last Wednesday in the home opener allowing just five hits in 6.2 innings. Two of those hits were infield singles. Campos set the Bulls down in order three times. Durham starter Carlos Reyes was perfect through five innings before three straight hits plated a run in the sixth.

 

NOW THAT'S RELIEF: The Tribe bullpen has worked 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings, and has a 1.17 ERA for the season. The last run allowed came in the sixth inning of Thursday's game against Durham.

 

KEEP THE BAGS PACKED: The Tribe opens the season with 14 of its first 19 games on the road. The Indians are on their longest road trip of the season, a nine-game trip to Durham (2), Charlotte (4) and Louisville (3). The Tribe ends the month with a six-game homestand. The Indians are 2-3 on the road.

 

WARMING UP: The Indians hit just .173 on the first road trip of the season, but batted .288 on the homestand to raise the season average to .225. Brady Clark (now in Milwaukee), Mark Smith and Wilton Veras all have four-game hitting streaks. Smith batted .667 on the homestand with a 1.111 slugging percentage.

A neat note from the High Desert staff:

 

Monday's game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 16th, when the Mavs visit the Quakes in Rancho Cucamonga. Tuesday's matchup will feature Pete Smart (1-1) for the Mavs, against Ervin Santana of the Quakes. Barring more rain, first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 (9:15 Central)..

 

On Wedneday, the Mavs will send right-hander Chris Saenz to the hill, as he'll square off with Anaheim Angels right-hander Aaron Sele, who is with the Quakes on a rehab assignment. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 7:15 (9:15 Central).

 

Always fun when the Class A kids get a chance to go up against an established big leaguer. I remember last year when the Mavs pitchers had varying degrees of success facing a rehabbing Phil Nevin for a series.

Indy Site Game Summary:

 

DURHAM, North Carolina -- The Durham Bulls (6-6) went batty on Tuesday night pounding an incredible 17 hits, including three home runs to defeat the Indianapolis Indians (6-5) by a score of 14-3. Six of Durham's nine starters had at least two hits in the contest as the Tribe fell to 2-4 on the road this season.

 

From top to bottom the Durham lineup pounded out hits, and leading the charge for Durham, appropriately, was leadoff batter Jason Tyner. Tyner performed his duty to near perfection going 4-for-5, including a triple to leadoff the first, and scored two runs. Jay Canizaro, Ryan Jackson, and Chad Mottola all went deep for Durham. Jackson, who had only two RBI coming into the game, needed only a triple to hit for the cycle, and was a one-man wrecking crew in driving home a team-high six baserunners.

 

Durham sent 11 batters to the plate in the third against Indians starter Francisco Campos (0-2), and scored six runs on six hits, including a three-run homer by the former Indian Mottola. Campos, who was pounded for nine hits and seven runs, lasted just 3.0 innings before being replaced in favor of Brooks Kiescnick in the fourth inning.

 

Kieschnick, however, fared no better giving up four runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run shot by Canizaro, and three runs in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by Jackson. The seven earned runs marked the first allowed by the Tribe bullpen in 15.2 innings.

 

Durham's starting pitcher Carlos Reyes (1-0) pitched five innings allowing only one hit while striking out four to continue his dominance of Tribe batters in earning his first victory of the season. Reyes, who pitched five perfect innings last Wednesday at Victory Field in a game eventually won in the 10th inning on Pete Zoccolillo's two-run homer, has now pitched 10.0 innings against the Tribe allowing a mere one hit.

 

Indianapolis scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning off Durham reliever Delvin James, the last of which came on a Mark Smith single to score Mark Budzinski. Smith, 2-for-4, extended his hitting streak to five games.

 

The two teams will complete the two-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday afternoon when the Tribe's Ruben Quevedo (1-0) opposes Durham's Jeremi Gonzalez (0-0), first pitch is scheduled for noon.

Mavs Rally Late, But Fall to Quakes 4-3

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes used an RBI base hit from Nick Gorneault, to break a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning, and went on to beat the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday night at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga.

 

Kade Johnson's three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning was the only spark of the night as the Mavs failed to win their second consecutive game for the fourth time this season. The Mavs are now just 4-7 and have failed to win two games consecutively so far this year.

 

Quakes starting pitcher Ervin Santana was incredible. The right hander dominated for six shutout innings, allowing the Mavs just two hits. Santana struck out a season-high eight men, while walking just one. The Mavs didn't record thier first base hit off Santana, until Brian Foster's fifth inning single to right field.

 

The Quakes took the early lead off Mavs starter Pete Smart, as Gorneault collected the first of three hits, to drive in Jeff Mathis for a 1-0, second inning lead.

 

They made it 2-0 with another run in the third, as Tommy Murphy scored on an infield single by Mathis. The Quakes went up 3-0 in the sixth, as Casey Smith's infield single plated Jason Coulie, who walked to open the inning. Smart went 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs, while scattering ten hits. He struck out six, while walking two.

 

Mavs reliever Greg Schaub came on in the sixth inning to successfully get out of a jam. He held Rancho at bay until Johnson's fourth homer of the year, a three-run shot to right field, tied the game in the eighth inning. The blast came off Mario Mendoza, who allowed a one-out double to Chris Morrris and a single to Todd West before Johnson's round-tripper.

 

In the bottom of the inning though, Schaub allowed the Quakes to retake the lead, as Justin Turner tripled and scored on the RBI hit by Gorneault.

 

The Mavs threatened in the ninth, as Froilan Villanueva had a two-out single, but Scott Candelaria grounded out to Casey Smith to end the game with the tying run at first base.

 

Mendoza (1-0), who blew the three-run lead, ironically gets his first win of the year, while Schaub (0-1) takes the loss for the Mavs.

 

With West's eighth-inning hit, he now has hit safely in all seven games this year.

 

RHP Chris Saenz will go on Wednesday as the Mavs look to get back on track against the Quakes. Anaheim Angels right-hander Aaron Sele will throw for the Quakes, as he works in his third rehab appearance with Rancho this year. Game time is 7:15 (9:15 Central) in Rancho Cucamonga.

 

The Mavs return home on Thursday to battle the Lancaster Jethawks in game one of a four-game series.

David Weiser's Perspective from Huntsville:

 

Last night I raised a point that aroused my suspicion......... As well as the Stars have pitched this early in the season (and all for a .500 record), they're overworked because of three extra-inning affairs they've had to play, and in danger of having it affect their performance down the stretch......... I took a count that confirmed my suspicion --- the pitching staff has combined to pitch more innings after 12 games than any Stars team in its history, and have surpassed the previous high my a good margin........ The 2001 staff pitched 110 1/3 innings. This year, they've thrown 122 innings........ The 2001 staff was 2nd in the league in ERA and had the 2nd best ERA among any Stars team in its history, but that team surpassed the previous record by only an inning........ The 2003 staff has thrown 12 more innings than the 2001 team. That's significant. How it affects them, with the probability of a few more extra inning games to go before the first half ends, will be something worth watching for.

 

With an overworked bullpen, it's understandable that Matt Parker was called upon to throw three innings in relief of Derek Lee, tonight. He was the only one really able to go. Parker hadn't pitched since last Friday........ Parker specializes in long middle relief, so three-inning assignments aren't really foreign to him......... Parker, who now has an unbelievable string of 43 1/3 innings, in which he's given up just 3 earned runs going back to last July (that's an ERA of 0.62, since you expect me to do the math), picked up his 1st save of the season, and 2nd by the bullpen, with ease.........

 

Lee, pitching in his 121st game as a Huntsville Star, tying a club record held by Mike Maurer (1995-97 Stars), lowered his ERA to 2.08 in pitching 6 shutout innings, getting hitters out as Derek usually does --- by spotting the ball on the corners and getting the other side to swing at tidbits......... Derek was at his finest. He threw an efficient 78 pitches, permitting only two runners past first base........ Ben Hendrickson, who was scheduled to start, was pulled last Sunday with a sore forearm......... Derek had a custom of not getting a lot of run support in the past, but tonight he was able to relax a little with an early 5-0 lead and concentrate on his game.

 

The Stars scored on a bases-loaded walk to Richard Paz in the 1st, then added a four-spot as Ryan Knox drove one in on a fielder's choice ground ball and J.J. Hardy doubled in a run........ After Dave Krynzel scored on a wild pitch, Brandon Gemoll tripled in another run to give the Stars a 5-0 lead........ Gemoll is hitting just .222, but 6 of his 10 hits this season have been for extra-bases. Gemoll is a stocky kid, whose build reminds me of Rob DeBoer, who had awesome power --- until he got in a game. Then he would strike out almost incessantly........ Krynzel bounced back from his 0-for-7 Monday to collect three hits and score a pair of runs........ Paz had another great day at the plate and make me wonder why platoon him with Chris Barnwell. Paz has hit in 6 of the 7 games he's played in and carries a .360 average......... Knox continues to hit steadily, if not often. He's played in every game this season and hit safely in 10 of them.

 

Wednesday, (1-0, 0.00) will try to continue a string of shutout innings, numbering 11 for now. He leads the Southern League in ERA and strikeouts at the moment and if he has a third brilliant outing, there should be some tongues wagging......... He had a roller-coaster season last year, but this year has been more coaster than roller....... The Rays will send Brian Stokes (0-1, 0.96).

 

Huntsville Box Score:

RHP Matt Parker came over in the Fernando Vina trade -- he's 24 years old now -- how about that streak David Weiser mentioned! Eight walks in addition to 13 hits for the Stars batters - beautiful!

Not to spoil the Prince Parade, but it's worth noting that he only has 1 walk in over 30 ABs so far this season. It's hard to say that's a big deal with him hitting over .440, but you certainly don't want to see his strike zone adjustment wither with lack of use against inferior pitching. Gotta love Hardy's line score 2-3 and 2 walks.

id rather have prince hit 45 hr's and bat .430 with no walks..then have a barry bonds year...we are arguing semantics...hes not walking, because he is hitting every pitch near the strike zone over the fence!!

 

as mentioned above, once pitchers stop throwing him strikes, then his walk totals will go up

Well I'd rather have Prince hit .400 with 40+ HRs too, I was merely pointing out an early trend. Ideally it would be nice to see input from someone who had seen a lot of games. It seems possible that he has expanded his zone after some frustration last year, and given his level he's not getting any negative reinforcement. Or the other pitchers haven't yet caught on that they are dealing with the man beast. For the record Brian Prince's K rate isn't all that great it works out to about 100 in a full season, which is perfectly fine by me but it's not like he's this awesome contact hitter. On the Flipside though one more K yesterday and his full year projection is about 120, while 1 less and it's 80, so sample size is clearly an issue. Can't wait to see this Beloit team in a few weeks. Had I know our kids were that entertaining, I would have brought them along this year. Too bad they wanted to spend the weekend with their aunt and uncle.

 

As for watching BP, that would be a job for BF.net's PR director.
