Link Report For Games of Saturday, April 19th

MassBrew

Well, I must say a 4-hour, 14-inning thriller with the Brewers coming out on top will certainly help pass the time within a 12-hour day at the office. Lots of fun in the Brewerfan chat room, especially over the last six innings or so. That exhausting win kept me from checking out any of the minor league audio, including old friend Terry Byrom with Fort Wayne vs. Beloit, but we'll start things off now and fill you in much more later tonight...

By the way, in what was a very surreal moment for me, I was able to check out on local radio Jeff Deardorff batting for Rochester vs. Pawtucker pitcher Paul Stewart in a battle of former teammates today. Deardorff continued his hot start to the season, going 3-for-3 while playing third base, as Stewart gave up three runs (two earned) in five innings and was saddled with the 3-2 PawSox loss.

To see Wright being knocked about at AAA is stupid. He has much too good of stuff for that. Is there anything he is actually working on... strength, mechanics, religion, anything?

I would be really sad if he is just walking out every 5th day 'waiting' for magic and movement and control to 'appear'.

Game Two: Charlotte 5, Indianapolis 0

Indy Site Doubleheader Summary:

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Charlotte Knights swept a doubleheader from the Indianapolis Indians Saturday night 9-3 and 5-0. The Indians (6-9) have dropped six straight overall and seven consecutive road contests.

Willie Harris, Mario Valenzeula and Jamie Burke led the Knights' charge in game one. Burke led off the third inning with a single and scored the tying run (1-1) on a double by Aaron Miles. Harris drew a walk in the inning and scored the go-ahead run when Ross Gload singled.

The Knights (9-5) blew the game open in the fifth when the first four men reached base and scored. Burke again started the rally, this time with a double. He later came around to score the second of his three runs. Valenzuela put the game out of reach with a three-run home run that made it 7-1.

Harris, who was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, tacked on a two-run homer in the sixth to give him three RBI in the game and six for the series.

Jon Rauch (2-0) scattered three hits over six innings to earn the win. Mark Budzinski, the second batter of the game, homered to give the Tribe an early 1-0 lead. Rauch retired the next 14 batters before Pete Zoccolillo doubled in the fifth.

Zoccolillo added a solo homer leading off the seventh for Indianapolis.

Jamey Wright (1-3) took the loss allowing six runs in 4.1 innings.

Charlotte used more power hitting and excellent pitching to win the nightcap. Cliff Brumbaugh went 3-for-3 with two home runs. The designated hitter made it a 2-0 game with a solo shot in the fourth. Brumbaugh delivered the crushing blow, a three-run homer, in the sixth to give the Knights a 5-0 cushion. All five runs came off Tribe starter Mark Guerra (0-1).

Mike Porzio and Arnie Munoz combined to shutout the Indians for the first time this season. Porzio (3-0) scattered five hits and a walk over six innings while striking out eight. Munoz worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Tribe's biggest threat came in the second inning when Lee Stevens and Mark Smith singled to start the inning. Porzio got a strikeout, fly out and ground out to work out of the jam.

The Indians look to salvage one win in the series when the teams meet in the finale Sunday afternoon.

Indianapolis Game Two Box Score:

Pretty sad when veterans Lee Stevens and Mark Smith are by far your two biggest offensive threats at the moment...

High Desert 8, Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 5

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Mavs Hang on for 8-5 Win

The High Desert Mavericks pulled back to within three games of .500, as they beat the Lancaster JetHawks in an afternoon game at Mavericks Stadium on Saturday, winning by a score of 8-5.

Brian Foster?s three-run home run in the third inning put the Mavs in front for good, as they won their second game in three days against the South?s top team.

Mavs starter Danny Kolb was staked to a 2-0 lead in the first as Jason Belcher?s two-out single scored Todd West. An error by first baseman Jeff Stanek allowed Kade Johnson to score to make it 2-0.

In the second, Sergio Santos hit his first home run of the season to make it 3-2. All three runs were unearned due to a Kolb throwing error.

Foster?s fifth homer of the year gave the Mavs a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third, off Lancaster starter Doug Slaten (1-1).

The teams traded runs, with Lancaster scoring once in the fifth to close the gap to 5-4, only to see the Mavs retake a two-run lead at 6-4, with a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI hit by center fielder Chris Morris.

After Lancaster got a run in the seventh off winner Aaron Dean (1-2), the Mavs scored twice in the seventh to pad their lead, and make it 8-5. Scott Candelaria?s two-run triple down the right field line with two outs was the key hit.

High Desert reliever Justin Gordon worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, but made it interesting, when he walked the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth. Bobby Bystrowski came on and got Marland Williams to hit into the inning-ending fielder?s choice, as second baseman Ralph Santana?s amazing diving stop saved the three-run lead. Bystrowski remained in the game and worked a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Kade Johnson went 1-4 and extended his hitting steak to a season-high 14 games.

The Mavs throw Pete Smart (1-1) in the final game of the series, while Lancaster counters with Scott Barber (1-0). Game time on Sunday afternoon is 3:05, 5:05 Central.

Huntsville 6, Birmingham (White Sox) 1

Ben Diggins dominant with a shutout effort; Corey Hart with his first HR of the season breaking the game open; all J.J. Hardy did was double, single, walk twice, and hit a sacrifice fly. I'll toot my horn very loudly and say that I was touting Hardy as #1 for the P50 last July, and haven't wavered since, because of the position he plays. But that's just me (and Jim Powell), and why Toby gets the big bucks http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ...

The thing that was holding JJ back was, because of his middling power, he needed to draw more walks. Now he is walking almost once in every 5 AB and hitting for more power anyway. What is his next goal, stealing 50 bases? Go for it, JJ. Who cares about that Prince guy, anyway?

Huntsville Times Game Story:

Ben Diggins' quotes for you...

www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...279640.xml

David Weiser Checks In From Huntsville:

DEJA VU

The Birmingham Barons look like a totally different team this year, there's no doubt about that. Not in substance (18 players are back from last year, including 2 who are on the disabled list), but in performance....... Year after year, we looked forward to hating the Barons, not just because it was a state rivalry, but because the Barons always seemed to win the upper hand. Maybe a 15-12 loss in the first Stars game ever in 1985 set the tone........ They pummeled us 15-2 and 17-7 in the Western Division Title Series in 1987...... 11-2 with a 9-run 4th inning in 1991........

And when they weren't doing that, they brought out a perennial stream of prospects and closers we couldn't buy a hit off of --- Luis Andujar, Scott Eyre, Rocky Biddle, Danny Wright, Josh Stewart, et. al. (don't laugh, they were tough)....... You want numbers? Since 1995 up to the start of this season, the Barons held a 93-59 edge over the Stars........ It makes the capture of the 2001 Western Division Title at Hoover Met that much sweeter even today, especially considering we lost 12 of 17 games during the regular season that year.

Reminder to Brewerfan readers: Huntsville a Milwaukee affiliate since 1999

But this team the past two days looked like a shadow of its former self....... I actually feel the shoe will be on the other foot this year........ The shoe belonged to J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart and Pedro Liriano and Ben Diggins had the clamps down on a team desperate to get a runner in scoring position........ The Barons only had three tonight........ With one out and one on in the 2nd inning, J.J. handled a high one-hopper hit by Juan Piniella, and racing with his momentum in the direction of 2nd base to make the force out on Scott Bikowski, realized he had gotten there too late....... He got off the throw to first, but it was high over the head of Brandon Gemoll, and Bikowski and Piniella were in scoring position....... But Diggins struck out Josh Shaffer on three pitches and got Chad Durham on a grounder to Hardy, taking him off the hook for the throwing error.

No one can say how long the Barons can remain this impotent (their record now is 5-10). They're hitting .226 and have played in 7 straight games without getting double figures in hits..... They've hit just 4 HRs this year --- last in the league and they've stolen a base successfully in only half of 22 attempts........ Facing a pitching corps that's given up only one earned run through a complete turn in the rotation, a team that's on or near the top among ERA leaders, I'd say it's safe to bring out the broom on Monday........ I have hope we can easily win the regular season series against this team for the first time since 1994.

Dave Krynzel started the scoring in the 1st inning after sprinting the bases on a triple to right. He would score on Hardy's first-pitch fly ball to center....... The first of two errors on the day by Danny Sandoval led to an unearned run in the 3rd, a ground ball by leadoff hitter Ryan Knox that went off his glove and into left. After reaching third on a passed ball, Corey Hart's one-out single scored Knox........ Cristian Guerrero hit a grounder to Sandoval in the 2nd that went through Sandoval's legs, but because the ball didn't touch his glove, Guerrero was magnaminously awarded a hit........

Corwin Malone went to his breaking ball a lot, but I guess by the 5th, the Stars had seen enough of it and were knocking it all over the place. J.J. found a 3-and-1 breaking ball and rapped it through the hole on the right side for a single, then Hart, who had a big day, raising his average to .242, destroyed a 2-2 breaking ball that soared to straighaway left over the K&M Glass Sign on the third row of billboards past the light standard behind it --- a good 425 feet, if not more. That made the score 4-0 and that was more than enough......

Ryan Gripp followed with a single through short into left and Gemoll, 8-for-22 (.364) on a 6-game hit streak, had the fourth straight hit off Malone that inning, a hit-and-run single that moved Gripp to third....... Gripp would score on a force play at second...... Malone walked Guerrero to end a 28-pitch inning. Enimencio Pacheco came in, blew smoke past Mike Kremblas and put out the fire. Another fielding error by Sandoval would result in an unearned run in the 6th.

Just as in Friday night's game, the Stars defense on the first play of the game was a sparkler........ Guillermo Reyes hit a foul pop way over to the spacious foul area on the third base side. Knox and Hart gave up the chase, but Hardy made a basket catch, lunging between them to snare the dying ball........ The scoring line from tonight's game was almost duplicate of Friday's. For the 2nd straight night, the Barons scored 1 run on 5 hits and 2 errors. While the Stars once again scored six, they got by on one less hit and one less error........

The Stars have now won four of its last five and look for their first three-peat Sunday afternoon....... The weather forecast, unfortunately, doesn't look good as Derek Lee makes his club record 122nd appearance for the Huntsville Stars. It calls for a strong chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon....... Brian West, who was 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA against the Stars last year in four starts and a relief appearance on the last day of the season, will start for Birmingham.

Ben Diggins recorded his first win with his third consecutive quality start, blanking the Barons over seven frames...... Diggins fanned eight, his personal high in the Southern League and two off his career high. Of the 87 pitches he threw, 62 were strikes...... Diggins lowered his already impressive earned run average to 1.46......... Ryan Miller extended his scoreless relief string to 10 1/3 innings. That hadn't been done at the start of a season since Steve Phoenix in 1994. The longest scoreless string belongs to Joe Klink, who threw 16 scoreless innings in April 1988.
