High Desert Updates from the Audio Pre-Game Show:

Pitching coach Bill Champion's mom died this weekend. Our condolences to the Champion family. Helena pitching coach Mark Littell moves up from extended spring training in Maryvale to cover for a bit.

Infielder Todd West's arm/shoulder continues to trouble him, and an MRI has been scheduled. West has not been placed on the DL, not as of yet, anyway, but he's not in Monday's lineup and will miss at least another day or two, even if he avoids a DL stint.

LHP Pete Smart, the Mavs' Opening Day starter, has been placed on the 7-day DL (which is the standard DL in the minor leagues). He, too, is scheduled for an MRI -- I believe it's his pitching arm.

The Brewers have signed a former big leaguer and assigned him to the High Desert roster. 28-year-old RHP Ken Ray saw action in relief in 13 games for the Kansas City Royals in 1999. Apparently, Ray was out of baseball in 2001 and saw some independent league action in 2002, according to Mavs' announcer Mike Lindskog.

Ray will not move into the starting rotation, however. RHP J.M. Gold moves into the rotation in Smart's spot Wednesday night.

So once again, the Brewers choose not to promote too quickly an organizational pitcher from Beloit or even Helena to High Desert to bridge the talent gap between the Huntsville and Beloit staffs, and sorry, that wording is not a slight on potential talents like Dan Hall, Dan Kolb, Chris Saenz, or Tony Stavros. But there is a perceived staff talent drop at the High-A level.

Starting with LHP Brian Mazone (27 years old this July), and RHP's Bobby Bystrowski (26), Aaron Dean (24), Justin Backsmeyer (23), and now Ray (28) , the Brewers have brought in pitchers who were let go by other major league organizations or who were toiling solely in independent ball. All appreciative of the opportunity, I'm sure, but also all thrust with a welcome to the High Desert pitching conditions.

Of course, the Mavericks also play road games, and as Lindskog reminds us tonight, not very well. Going back to last season, High Desert has lost a mind-numbing 25 of 26 road games.

Again, no slight to the High Desert pitching staff, but the talent gap that exists there seems to get bigger and bigger every week. Has anyone else just stared at the staff ERAs there and been completely boggled? I don't remember it being quite this bad last season, and the sample sizes aren't getting any smaller. I yearn for the day when it is not every other club in the system that has a solid staff. It is going to be a challenge for Saenz, Hall, Stavros , Schaub, et al, to form a solid staff there, and I hope they rise to that challenge eventually, for High Desert's sake. Clark and Johnson aren't going to be there all season.

Greenville 4, Huntsville 2, 10 innings

Just wrapped up; Stars' runs scored on a Chris Barnwell groundout and a catcher's bad throw on a Richard Paz steal of third. Huntsville was one out away from victory in the ninth, but an RBI single off of RHP Matt Parker kept the Stars from their fourth consecutive victory. Parker then gave up a 2-run HR in the tenth and took the loss.

Additional details overnight and in the early AM...

Beloit Site Game Blurb:

Game Summary from Riverbandits.com:

The Quad City River Bandits scratched across a run in the top of the 11th inning Monday night as they defeated the Beloit Snappers 5-4 at Beloit?s Pohlman Field on Monday night. Steve Murray pitched two scoreless innings to collect his first victory, while Omar Burgos scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

With one out and the game tied, Burgos doubled into left-center. With Kaulana Kuhaulua at the plate, Josh Alliston uncorked a breaking ball in the dirt that skipped away from Pedro Esparragoza. An aggressive Burgos took third on the play. With Burgos at third and one out, another Alliston slider slipped through Esparragoza?s legs, and Burgos slid in safely for a 5-4 Bandits lead.

Murray got into a bit of trouble in the eleventh, loading up the bases with one out. But Callix Crabbe popped to shallow center, and John Vanden Berg flied to deep right center. Trent Oeltjen made the catch to send the Bandits to a series-opening win. Murray struck out one in two innings to earn his first win with the Bandits.

Quad City used a pair of bunt base hits in the third to take a 2-0 lead. After Omar Burgos drew a leadoff walk, both Kaulana Kuhaulua and Scott Whitrock bunted down the third base line for singles to load up the bases. Seth Davidson bounced to second to bring home Burgos, and Kuhaulua scored on a sacrifice fly from Trent Oeltjen.

The Bandits added two more in the fourth inning. After Dusty Gomon hit an infield single to the hole on the left side, he moved to second base on a Felix Molina walk. Burgos singled to bring home Gomon, and an error allowed Molina to take third base. Molina scored on Kuhaulua?s chopper to third.

The Snappers scored three times to close the gap in the fifth. After Scott Tyler had pitched a no-hitter through the first four innings, the Snappers singled three straight times to bring home a run. Tyler then hit a man and walked two more to bring home a pair of runs, slicing the Bandits edge to 4-3.

Beloit tied the contest in the bottom of the eighth frame. After pitching two scoreless inning, Kevin Cameron walked leadoff hitter Kennard Bibbs and was replaced by Pat Neshek. After a walk to Prince Fielder, Jeff Eure hit a chopper to third base. Burgos? throw was wild, bringing home Bibbs with the tying run.

Scott Tyler got no decision for the Bandits, striking out three in five innings. Kevin Cameron allowed just an unearned run in two innings, while Pat Neshek maintained his 0.00 ERA with two scoreless innings.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits take on the Snappers in the second game of the three-game series. T.J. Prunty (1-2, 4.00) starts against Calvin Carpenter (0-1, 5.40). First pitch is scheduled 6:30, with pregame coverage on WKBF starting at 6:15.

Suggestion:

If I'm Snappers management and I have no local radio affiliate providing play-by-play, I audition announcers to stream the games over the Beloit website. I can imagine that dozens of local broadcasting majors in the area would jump at the chance. Heck, in order to get a season's worth of audio tapes for their resume, you'd probably get volunteers to do it without pay, just for the opportunity. Or at the least, cost would be minimal. Of course, there's only the benefit to the web fans, as you wouldn't be bringing in advertising income. But surely not a costly venture at all.

You'd likely only get home games, as there would be the cost associated with a traveling audio voice. Most team announcers fill another front office position; that could be the case here, or the Snappers could simply bring somebody in to be the online voice for the 70 home dates -- that's it.

The Oakland A's do this for their spring training games.

So how about it, Snappers? Could the parent Brewers assist and make sure the resources are available?

And we all know what happened to Bill Scott.

I'd have to listen to many, many tapes of Bob Uecker before I'd consider myself ready, but hey, I'm game. I have nothing else going on this summer. The chicks dig the deep, if not somewhat nasely voice.

Hmmm, RHP Ryan Trytten with a decent starting effort; that's why the Daily Menu says "pitchers subject to change", as Khalid Ballouli was originally scheuled. (There goes Colbyjack's Fan Fest pitcher projections...); LHP Justin Gabriel with a nice relief outing...

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 10, High Desert 5

How much fun can the team breakfast be at the hotel these days? 26 of 27 is just crazy...

High Desert Site Game Story:

LANCASTER, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks overall losing streak reached a season-worst six straight games, as they fell in Lancaster on Monday night, losing to the JetHawks by a final of 10-5.

Lancaster got out in front 7-0 and was never challenged as the Mavs dropped their ninth straight road game overall. Dating back to last year, the Mavs have now lost 26 of their last 27 road games.

The JetHawks got on the board early with three runs off Mavs starter Brian Mazone (0-2) in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. That lead became 7-0 in the third, as Maybanex Santana hit a Grand Slam, which was also his first homer of the year.

Daryl Clark's first homer away from Mavericks Stadium put the Mavs on the board in the fourth inning. The home run came off JetHawks starter Justin Wechsler (2-0), who scattered seven hits over five innings for the win. He didn't walk a batter and recorded four strikeouts. For Clark, he now leads the League with 11 home runs and 26 RBIs.

Three more runs in the bottom of the fourth put the JetHawks up 10-1. Mazone was chased after he loaded the bases without retiring a man in the inning. Reliever David Nolasco came on and allowed all three men to score, but did work three full innings without allowing a run. Tony Stavros also worked two scoreless innings to help the Mavericks bullpen.

The Mavs got a run in the seventh on a Johnny Raburn RBI hit to make it 10-2. High Desert made things interesting with a three-run ninth off reliever Billy Biggs, but failed to bring the tying run to the plate, leaving the bases loaded at the end of the game.

Raburn finished the night with three hits and two RBIs for the Mavs. Scott Candelaria and Jason Belcher chipped in two hits each for the Mavs offense. Mark Ernster collected a ninth inning RBI hit that extended his hitting streak to seven straight.

The Mavs send Danny Kolb (0-1) to the hill tomorrow, as he faces southpaw, Doug Slaten (2-1) of the JetHawks. Game time is at 7:15 from Lancaster.

The Mavs return home on Friday, May 2nd.

Well, technically it may not have been a total wipeout because Milwaukee and Indianapolis were idle, but Monday marked the first day since the start of the season that there wasn't at least one organizational victory to feel good about.

So we'll take our Pepto-Bismol and get ready for Today's Menu :

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to first pitch...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Pascual Coco vs. Louisville (Reds) at home, 7:05 PM

HUNTSVILLE: RHP Ben Diggins and his 2.05 ERA vs. Greenville (Braves) at home in a 12:05 PM lunchtime special -- fill us in here after listening in at the office...

HIGH DESERT: RHP Danny Kolb takes the mound at Lancaster (Diamondbacks) as the Mavericks look to turn things around -- heck, they will, starting at 9:15 tonight!!

BELOIT: RHP Calvin Carpenter at home vs. Quad City (Twins), 6:30 PM; audio is available at riverbandits.com. We'll see if we can determine Khalid Ballouli's status today.

Just like to give a little notice to super Mario Mendez who as I recall Toby touted quite a bit after seeing him in spring. He's off to a pretty good start at Beloit OPS comfortably over .900 good batting average. His strikeout to walk ratio could be improved, but since he hasn't been mentioned yet this year I thought he deserved a little love from Brewerfan

How much fun can the team breakfast be at the hotel these days?

We love it when our readers take a minute or two to educate us, as this one did:

The vast majority of California league road games do not involve hotel stays. The Brewers only pick up hotels if the trip is longer than 150 miles. That means that when the Mavericks play Lancaster, Bakersfield, San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga, and Lake Elsinore they go back to Adelanto on the bus after each game. (The same thing happens when Beloit plays Kane County.) They only stay overnight when they play the Northern Division teams.

Those close road games are tough on the players, because it means they get back to their home park around 1:00 AM and to their apartments closer to 2:00.

The reader went on to note that's no excuse for losing 26 of 27 away from Friendly Mavericks Stadium. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
