Link Report for Games of Wednesday, April 30th

MassBrew

Louisville (Reds) 6, Indianapolis 0

Wow, this team is just a mess at the moment, now 8-16; it's the young veterans like Veras, Lawrence, McKay, Conti, Seabol and Luuloa who are just killing this offense; Hall and Scarborough's troubles have been well-documented here this month. Who knew we'd be longing for the Ryan Thompson's and Izzy Alcantara's of the baseball world...

Indy Site Game Summary:

Hot off the presses...

INDIANAPOLIS -- Lee Stevens' last professional game didn't go quite exactly as planned on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field, for himself or for his team. The Indians (8-16) were shut out by the Louisville Bats (15-9) as Jimmy Anderson (1-0) pitched seven shutout innings in his second Triple-A start of the season.

Louisville scored four runs in the third inning on a flurry of singles to lead off the frame. Anderson, Wilton Guerrero, Jason Maxwell, and Felipe Crespo put together four straight base hits to load the bases for the Bats with one run on the board and no men out. After an RBI ground out by Brandon Larson and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Cruz made it 3-0, Bobby Darula's two-out single plated Crespo for the final run in the inning.

The Bats plated two additional runs in the top of the seventh inning when Cruz doubled home a pair against Tribe reliever Brooks Kieschnick.

The Indians offense was held in check by Anderson's groundball-inducing sinker. Mark Smith was the lone Indian to record two hits on the day as he went 2-for-4. Joe Lawrence and Jason Conti each were 1-for-4 with a double, though neither was able to cross home plate for the Tribe.

Stevens, honored before the game with a plaque to commemorate an 18-year professional baseball career which included hitting the first home run in Victory Field history on July 11, 1996, grounded out to second baseman Guerrero to end the game. Stevens was 0-for-4 in the game.

The Indians open up an eight-game road trip to two National League affiliates. Thursday night Francisco Campos (1-2, 7.48) will face the Richmond Braves and righthander Chris Fussell (2-1, 2.13).

Tie Game, Final: Quad City (Twins) 4, Beloit 4, 10+ innings

Explanation from the River Bandits' Site:

A wild series between the River Bandits and Beloit Snappers came to a fitting conclusion on Wednesday night when the rubber match of the three-game series was called off in the eleventh inning due to rain. Each of the first two games of the series had gone into extra innings, with Quad City winning 5-4 in 11 on Monday, and the Snappers topping Quad City 1-0 on Tuesday. Because this is the final scheduled first half meeting between the two teams, the game will not be made up.

With the score tied 4-4 in the eleventh inning, Quad City?s Kevin Cameron walked two batters amid a steady rainfall. After a delay in the action to apply a drying chemical to the pitching mound and home plate area, the rain picked up again, forcing the umpires to call the tarp onto the field. The delay lasted 44 minutes before the game was called.

Quad City took the lead in the top of the first inning, after Seth Davidson and Kaulana Kuhaulua reached on consecutive infield singles. On Kuhaulua?s single, a grounder to third, Beloit?s Jeff Eure uncorked a wild throw which allowed the runners to advance to second and third, and then Davidson came home on an Edgardo Lebron groundout.

The Bandits added to the edge in the top of the second frame. Scott Whitrock drew a leadoff walk, and then moved to second base on a past ball. Alex Romero singled into right-center to bring home Whitrock, and then stole second base. Seth Davidson drilled a two-out double down the right field line to put the Bandits up 3-0.

Eure drilled a solo home run to left with one away in the second inning to slice the Bandits lead to 3-1.

The Snappers scratched across a run in the fourth inning, and then took the lead with a two-run fifth. Kennard Bibbs had a single to drive home Pedro Esparragoza. Bibbs then moved all the way to third base as a pickoff attempt skipped past Dusty Gomon, and then scored on John Vanden Berg?s single to left.

But the Bandits tied it up against Gabe Mendoza in the seventh. Alex Romero laid down a bunt single with one away, and then took second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Davidson singled into center, bringing home Romero to even the score. Davidson had three hits on the contest.

Quad City?s Eric Fischer allowed four runs (three earned) in six innings of work. Fischer struck out five in his second straight strong outing. He was backed up by Ryan Smith, who did not allow a run in three innings, and Pat Neshek, who pitched a 1-2-3 tenth frame.

LHP Gabriel Mendoza continues his fine work; solid start for Manny Parra; nice to see the boys draw seven walks; Prince Fielder with seven errors in 24 games at first base...

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 8, High Desert 4

High Desert Site Game Summary:

LANCASTER, CA ? A miserable month came to an end for the High Desert Mavericks, as they dropped their eighth straight game overall in Lancaster, losing to the JetHawks by a final score of 8-4 on Wednesday night. The Mavs finished the month of April with an eleven-game road losing streak and are now 8-18 on the season.

Former Maverick Scott Barber (3-1) picked up his second win against the Mavs this year, with eight innings of solid effort. Kade Johnson's two-run home run to right field in the sixth inning was all that Barber allowed in his season-high eight innings of work.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, new Mavs reliever Kenny Ray (0-1) allowed the JetHawks to take the lead for good, as Dan Uggla picked up an RBI single to score Josh Kroeger. Lancaster took a 4-2 lead, as Mayobanex Santana picked up an RBI double. Ray was lifted with one out and runners at second and third for reliever Aaron Dean. Dean struck out Mike DiRosa, but allowed a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Danny Richar for a 6-2 JetHawks lead. Richar would then score on an RBI hit by Marland Williams. The JetHawks made it 8-2 in the eighth, as Dean allowed a solo home run to Mike DiRosa.

The Mavs threatened in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the on-deck circle, but couldn't get him to the plate, as Johnny Raburn and Dan Boyd each grounded into fielder's choices for the final two outs of the game.

Mavs starter J.M. Gold looked impressive in his first start of the season. Gold allowed two runs, just one earned in four innings of work. Lancaster finally got to Gold with two runs in the fourth inning, as Uggla collected an RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Mike Thiessen would score on a throwing error by Kade Johnson as Lancaster upped it's lead to 2-0.

Ray, who appeared in his first game as a Maverick, came on and worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning, before allowing the JetHawks the lead in the sixth.

Froilan Villanueva had three hits and an RBI for the Mavs, to lead them offensively. Johnson's home run gives him nine for the year. He also now leads the Cal League with 27 RBIs. Mark Ernster had two hits and extended his hitting streak to nine straight games. Boyd also collected two base hits for High Desert.

The Mavs will try to end the road madness on Thursday as Chris Saenz (1-2) goes to the hill against Lancaster's Lance Cormier (3-2) at 7:15.

The Mavs return home on Friday, May 2nd to battle Rancho Cucamonga.

High Desert Box Score:

Here's the High Desert box score as well. I was worried about Gold's performance based on the line score, but it seems he faired decently. And can we say enough about Kade Johnson so far this year? - DHonks

Indianapolis Star Game Story:

Wow, RHP Mark Guerra did indeed retire after this start. Sorry for doubting the earlier report from Wednesday; I assumed it must have been confusion over Lee Stevens' retirement as well; Cecil Cooper talks about the Tribe's woes...

Pending moves which surely would be announced today or Friday, the 23-man Indianapolis active roster now stands at only 19, 11 position players and eight pitchers. And if you think that Ruben Quevedo will be called up this weekend to take Todd Ritchie's spot, then there's only seven pitchers on the Indy roster, although the Tribe would get one in return if Ruben gets the call. Regardless, look for activity VERY soon.

It's not like Huntsville is awash in pitchers, carrying 11 all season thus far, and Ben Hendrickson nursing a sore arm. Other than Derek Lee, I'm not sure there's another prime candidate for Indy, based on the organization's stated desire to keep that squad together, particularly the younger prospects. However, based on the dire straits of the Indy roster at the moment, no Huntsville name would be a huge promotion surprise with the exception of Mike Jones.

You can always access the complete Brewerfan Transaction archives from the home page here. For now, here's the link, including a review of all the moves from a busy week thus far:

There certainly isn't much in the way of logical moves to make things work. Derek Lee really deserves more os a shot at AAA if Ruben gets called up. Option down Nance and your maybe only 1 pitcher short, but I don't know where you get the position players from. Maybe Ryan Knox? Spurring a promotion of Clark to Huntsville has some sort of logic, but at mimimum you'd have to expect them to sign one street free agent to fill the voids in Indy.

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

As this story reminds us, while the Brewers are now considered to have a "middle-of-the-pack" farm system (BA had the Crew, what, 15th?), it's not reflected in terms of wins and losses. Even in 2002, the Brewers had one of the worst (I believe the worst) record in terms of won-loss percentage chain-wide. It's that lack of overall depth that will keep the Brewers' farm system from jumping into that Top-10 echelon, at least for a bit. Obviously, the very weak April's at Indianapolis and High Desert this year don't have the Brewers off to a flying start percentage-wise this year, either. A real comedy of errors last night (or is that tragedy of errors?)...

While the record maybe similar atleast High Desert has more reasons to watch generally. I think our depth is going to be pretty good next year though. Between the draft and the cadre of players in extended spring I think next years Beloit team will be pretty good again. While the Beloit talent diffuses into A+ and AA for next year. I'm not sure if will have any team quite as stacked as Huntsville was this year, but given that the prospects will progress at different rates I think the talent won't be as unevenly distributed next year. I also wonder to if HD is just a place that's hard to win at like Coors.

Daily Menu for Thursday features three important young pitching prospects, along with a Mexican side dish; with the mighty Brewers taking the field in a matinee, we'll hope for some reports here from folks listening in to one game or another tonight...

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; tune in for pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to game time...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Francisco Campos takes the mound at Richmond (Braves), 6:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE: The Stars host Chattanooga (Reds) as LHP Luis Martinez looks to continue his hot start, 7:05 PM start time

HIGH DESERT: Last chance to win one on the current road trip; RHP Chris Saenz closes the series at Lancaster (Diamondbacks), 9:15 PM

BELOIT: It should be RHP Tom Wilhelmsen starting tonight (6:30 PM) when the Snappers travel to West Michigan (Tigers); the Whitecaps have a radio broadcast, but it does not appear to be available over the web. They are, however, looking forward to hosting the Fielder family tonight, details below. Whitecap pitcher Scott Moore, drafted just after Fielder last spring by Detroit, will likely pitch in this series, but is not scheduled for Thursday's game.

Umm Jim you seem to have forgotten/ misread the article Scott Moore is the Whitecap third basemen.

Yo, man, where did that come from? Ugh -- sorry about that. Gee, we spent enough time discussing Colbyjack's Scott Moore fetish last June, too. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
