Indianapolis 9, Richmond (Braves) 2

Indy Site Game Summary:

RICHMOND, Virginia -- The Indianapolis Indians (9-17), who entered play at Richmond on Friday night with a team batting average of .209, exploded for nine runs on ten hits in the first four innings alone to defeat the Richmond Braves (14-13) by a score of 9-2. The Tribe's 14-hit outburst snapped both a four-game Indians losing streak and a five-game Braves winning streak.

Mark Smith continued his hot hitting with a two-run blast over the left field wall in the top of the first inning to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead for David Manning (1-0), who got the victory for the Tribe making only his second start of the year. Manning, who lasted only 3.1 innings in his first start, pitched 7.0 innings on Friday allowing only five hits and one run while walking two and striking out seven to earn his first win of the season.

The Tribe added to the early lead in the third as Mark Budzinski started the inning with a single and Bill Hall followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for Pete Zoccolillo, who one-hopped a double off the fence in left-center field scoring Budzinski and Hall. After consecutive groundouts by Smith and Cody McKay, Wilton Veras dropped a single into right to score Zoccolillo from third before Veras was thrown out at second attempting to stretch the hit into a double. Zoccolillo's run increased the Tribe's lead to 5-0.

Richmond threatened in the bottom of the third inning when Marquis led off with a broken-bat double and Donzell McDonald blooped a single into left field to put runners on first and second with no outs. Manning quickly ended the threat by striking out Wilson Betemit before getting Bo Porter to ground into a double play to end the inning.

The early onslaught by Indianapolis continued in the fourth as Jason Conti (3-for-4) hit the first pitch of the inning out of the park for his third home run of the season to increase the lead to 6-0. Steve Scarborough followed Conti with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Manning before being driven in on a single by Budzinski (3-for-5), which ended Marquis' day after only 3.1 innings pitched.

Marquis' replacement, Derrick Lewis, fared no better. The first batter to face Lewis was Bill Hall, who greeted Lewis by hitting the third home run of the game for Indianapolis to straight-away centerfield. Hall's first home run of the season increased the Tribe's lead to 9-0. Hall finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.

"I've been feeling good in batting practice," said Hall. "I knew it was a matter of time before things starting going well in the games."

Richmond scored one run in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of an RBI groundout by Jesse Garcia that scored Damon Hollins who had previously tripled. The final tally for the Braves came in the ninth inning when two Wilton Veras errors allowed Hollins to cross the plate with an unearned run charged to Tribe reliever Roberto Giron.

With the win, the Indians improved to 1-1 on the current eight-game road trip that includes two more games in Richmond before moving on to Norfolk for a four-game series. On Saturday, the Indians will send Mike Buddie (0-2, 3.78) to the mound for his first start of the season to face Richmond's John Ennis (1-1, 4.76) in an afternoon contest. It's Buddie's first start since June 5, 2000 when he was with Columbus. Since then he's made 155 relief appearances including eight this season. Buddie was a starter from 1992-96.

Was there a game in Milwaukee tonight!?!?

Yup, and I was there. Hot date with my wife...

On the way home (we ducked out a 1/2 inning early) Bob & Jim were talking about Mike Jones, spurred off his amazing performance this evening. Obviously they had nothing better to talk about, and it was nice listening to them talk about a young man that both me & my wife had the distinct pleasure to meet in Beloit last summer. As Toby has expressed with similar feelings on Hardy & even Parra, it's hard not to be impressed with Jones as he has such a good head on his shoulders that beams with confidence, & it's hard to imagine him not succeeding at the highest level. I was most impressed to see his ERA before this evening's game at 3.86, after following a few rough starts as reported in the link reports here. While I doubted his seemingly rash promotion, without seeing him pitch in person of course, he has been handling himself extraordinarily well.

As SoCal noted, this is all we have right now. The minor leaguers, the draft, a few DFEs & the rare wins at the MLB level. Given the losing streak going into tonight's game, I sure as heck thought I was due for a good performance by default.

High Desert 4, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 3

Looks like a good night for the farm; the Link Report saves the day, again.

Mike, this is the first night this season, I believe, where the farm clubs all played and won -- too bad the parent club is incapable of cooperating as well...MassBrew

High Desert Site Game Summary:

An electric night in the desert as well! Easily the best night the kids on all the farm teams have had this season both in terms of wins and excitement! At least Jim Powell will have an exciting "Down on the Farm" report tonight...

ADELANTO, CA ? For just the second time this season, the High Desert Mavericks put together back-to-back wins, knocking off the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Friday night by a final of 4-3 at Mavericks Stadium.

Dan Hall (4-1) picked up his league-leading fourth win of the year, coming within one strike of a complete game victory. Hall turned in the best performance by a Maverick starter this season, going 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on just four hits, while striking out eight. The right-hander had a chance to throw the first complete game by a Maverick since Matt Parker did it to the Quakes in Rancho, on August 8th, 2001. After getting the first two outs of the ninth inning easily, Hall allowed Derek Mann to reach on a high chopper that was just over the glove of Hall and into center field. He would then walk his only man of the night, as Jason Aspito walked on a 3-2 pitch.

Bobby Bystrowski would come on to face Dallas McPherson, who represented the tying run at the plate. McPherson drove one off the wall in center field which pulled the Quakes to within one at 4-3. But Bystrowski would nail down his second save in as many nights, getting Michael Napoli to ground out to Todd West to end the game, giving Bystrowski a team-best sixth save.

The Mavs took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Daryl Clark knocked in Johnny Raburn, who opened the inning with a single and a stolen base. After Tommy Murphy?s second homer of the year tied it at 1-1, Dan Boyd drove in the go-ahead run, with a double off the wall, off of Quakes starter Steven Shell (2-2).

The Mavs added a third run on possibly the most exciting play of the year. Ralph Santana tripled to lead off the fifth inning, and was still on third after two ground ball outs. On a 2-2 pitch to Clark, Santana broke for home as right-hander Scott Schneider worked from the wind-up. Santana slid in safely, beating a high fastball for a straight steal of home plate.

The Mavs would add a run in the seventh, as Santana knocked in Chris Morris, who was hit by a pitch to open the inning.

The Mavs are home again on Saturday night to battle the Quakes. Brian Mazone (0-2) goes for the Mavs, while Jake Woods (1-2) throws for Rancho Cucamonga.

High Desert Box Score:

OF Chris Morris on pace for an 85-steal season in 110 attempts (77%)...

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

Ben Hendrickson news included...

KRYNZEL SAVES THE DAY

Anyone at all, casting a doubt whether Mike Jones belongs in Double-A, let it be silenced here and forever more after tonight....... Jonesy's performance, I'm sure made not just all us Stars fans here in Huntsville proud tonight, but I'm sure Brewer fans across the U.S. and the whole management team responsible for his signing and development and their decision to bump him up from Beloit this year...... Not since Luis Martinez's 5 no-hit inning, 11 K performance on April 5, has a pitcher so dominated a game. Jones permitted just one batter past first all night....... It will probably go on my top 10 list, when I speak before the Booster Club again near the end of the season........ But there were some other moments that will be remembered.

However, the Stars had to deal with a pitcher casting his own spell, tonight. They wound up striking out a season-high 15 times tonight....... Ryan Mottl, who won 28 games climbing the Class A ladder the past two seasons, would fan 10 batters, a season-high by an opposing pitcher, so it was good they got to him when they did....... After Ryan Knox led off the with a rare double (only his 3rd in 104 at-bats), he took third on a sac bunt by Dave Krynzel........ The Lookouts elected to retire Corey Hart on his grounder to third, allowing the speedy Knox to score....... Ordinarily the right strategic move to make, the run made all the difference, as both pitchers dueled each other, until Mottl tired out after throwing 107 pitches after six........ Jones, however, was more economical. He could've gone the distance if it was in Mgr. Frank Kremblas's hands......... After five innings, Jonesy threw just 56 pitches, 40 for strikes, averaging a little over 11 pitches/frame. In the end, Jones left after 77 pitches, 56 of them for strikes. Yep, that's right......... He retired the first eight hitters to face him, gave up an infield single to Mottl, then retired another eleven.

A game like this needed spotless defense from two teams that weren't accustomed to giving such, but as it turned out, it was the first game the Stars have played this season in which both teams were spotless in the field, and for the Stars, it went beyond spotless........ Cristian Guerrero saved the game from being tied in the 6th inning, when leadoff hitter Dernell Stenson hit a bomb to the right field corner that looked like it had the distance. Guerrero, with good speed and thankfully good height, raced back to the wall and made a vaulting catch off the top of the Burger King sign....... No one was sure whether Guerrero came up with the ball until his gloved hand came over the other side, with the ball gingerly in the webbing of his glove........ Then in the 9th, with Matt Childers trying to record his first save since his record-breaking month of July 2002, Krynzel saved the day........ With Chris Haas on first and one out, Steve Smitherman launced a searing line-drive to right center. Krynzel fled deep into the alley and made a leaping catch at the wall to take away an extra-base away. That surely would have scored Haas, spoiling an absolutely beautifully-pitched game, but that wasn't all!

Haas had already rounded second. Krynzel had enough time and enough on the ball to make a javelin throw to 1st base, completing a spectacular, game-saving double play........ And where were you tonight?....... Stars general manager Bryan Dingo said, "Krynzel's catch is the best I've ever see at Joe Davis Stadium." Dingo, by the way, has been an employee of the Stars since 1994.

This was the Stars' 5th shutout of the season, the 3rd by a 1-0 score......... Makes you think of the Koufax-Drysdale Dodger teams of the mid-60s........ The Stars are now 16-11 with a 3-game edge over the slumping Diamond Jaxx. Best start since 1999, when they were 17-10. Let's not count our chickens, though. They were in first place, then wound up having to face the Diamond Jaxx in a playoff game, which they lost........

A good night for the farm. Everyone in the Brewer organization won Friday night........ Huntsville sends Pedro Liriano (1-3, 3.62) to the mound against Dustin Moseley (2-0, 2.18), Saturday night. Kids coming early to the park get a foam baseball, sponsored by Boeing........ Moseley is the ace of this Chattanooga staff that is last in the SL in ERA. Chattanooga, however, has two of the top three pitching prospects in the organization, and Moseley is #5....... The Stars, with a team ERA of 2.90, rank 3rd in the league......... Mike Jones is now tied with Mobile's Chris Rojas for 2nd in strikeouts with 18........ Ben Hendrickson will make his first start since April 9, on May 11th........

Mickey Lopez has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners. Lopez, one of the best from the Brewer era, played for the Stars from 1999-2000, is tied for 10th on the all-time stolen base list, and holds the club record for the longest hitting streak in a seaosn......... The Indianapolis Indians roster was at 19, sparking fear that they might call one of our guys up, but they just acquired independent pitcher Robert Marquez and former Diamond Jaxx pitcher, Nate Teut. They're still short, though.

Against Chris Saenz, he belted two home runs in two pitches.

This time around, the Mavericks won't worry about seeing him. Kotchman strained his right hamstring in Thursday's game against Lake Elsinore running from second base to home.

Quakes manager Bobby Meacham said the .323 hitter is day-to-day.

Catcher Jeff Mathis was also out of Friday's lineup, but Meacham said he was given the day off.

Promo promo promo

High Desert is promoting more than a used-car salesman this weekend.

Friday was 50-cent food night. Originally, some thought the rapper 50 Cent would make an appearance, but that didn't happen.

Today is Milwaukee Brewers retro hat giveaway for the first 1,000 fans in the ballpark.

Sunday is a Little League Clinic starting at 10 a.m. Kids can participate free with a ticket to Sunday's game against Rancho Cucamonga.

Blackie's break

High Desert manager Tim Blackwell will disappear for the rest of the Rancho Cucamonga series.

Last month, Blackwell attended the wedding of his eldest daughter, Jana. This weekend, he'll be a guest at the graduation of his youngest daughter, Jaime, who is graduating from Cal Baptist.

In other coaching news, pitching coach Bill Champion returned to the team Friday.

What an impressive night for the farm teams!

They still play baseball in Milwaukee these day?

Seriously, though, I was really impressed with the pitching in the minors last night, so I put together a composite line for all four startes:

Manning 7.0 5 1 1 2 7

Jones 7.0 2 0 0 1 8

Hall 8.2 4 3 3 1 8

Sarfate 4.0 3 0 0 5 8

Total 26.2 14 4 4 9 31

Edited the BB:K. Unbelievable that three pitchers had 8 K (one only pitched 4 innings!)

Beloit Daily News Game Story:

Excellent piece here, Trytten, Sarfate, Sauveur, all good insights; what a plus when the Snappers are at home as far as press coverage goes; most surprising info here - Prince fielder, infield hit! (Yes, I know he's an athlete...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif )
