Beloit 4, West Michigan (Tigers) 3, 10 innings

Snapper pitchers "scatter" 15 hits; bullpen southpaws Breslow and Mendoza very strong again...

Looks like first-time Snapper Luis Pena caught a bit too much of the plate in his first outing -- with help from Craig Breslow, he limited the damage, however...

Richmond (Braves) 5, Indianapolis 2

I listened to nearly all of this one while in the office today, which I admit, is unusual for an Indy game. The Indy announcers are very professional, but this squad only inspires so much excitement. If I'm not mistaken, all the Tribe's hits were singles, and no one was able to come up with a truly clutch hit. Buddie, Marquez, and Kolb pitched -- I tuned away late, but Marquez was effective in his first couple of innings back with the team. No new news on the player acquisition front.

Indy Site Game Summary:

RICHMOND, VA -- The Indianapolis Indians (9-18) dropped to 1-2 on the current eight-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Richmond Braves (15-13) 5-2, despite out-hitting the Braves eight to six in the game.

The Indians started the game much the same way as Friday night when the team scored nine runs in the first four innings against the Braves. Mark Budzinski singled to open the first inning, Bill Hall then sacrificed him to second and Pete Zoccolillo's single to right scored Budzinski. Mark Smith followed up Zoccolillo's single with a base hit to right field to put runners on first and second with only one out for Cody McKay. With an opportunity to break the game open, however, McKay grounded into an inning ending double play.

The Tribe again threatened in the top of the second when Wilton Veras and Jason Conti both singled to start the frame, but came away empty handed as Braves starter John Ennis (2-1) retired the next three batters stranding Veras and Conti.

The Braves tied up the ballgame with a run in the bottom of the second inning when Nick Green's single scored shortstop Stubby Clapp, who had been walked by Indians starter Mike Buddie (0-3) to leadoff the inning. Buddie then gave up two more runs in the third inning when Johnny Estrada's two-out, bases empty double was followed up by consecutive singles from Mike Hessman and Clapp.

Buddie, making his first start since June 5, 2000, when he was with Columbus, pitched 3.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits to take the loss. He was relieved by the recently signed Rob Marquez, who pitched in 47 games with Indianapolis last season. Marquez pitched 3.0 innings allowing one hit and one run while striking out three in his 2003 Indians debut. Danny Kolb pitched the final two innings allowing one hit, an unearned run, and struck out four to lower his ERA on the season to 0.71.

The final Indians' run came in the top of the sixth inning when Smith lead off with a single and later scored on Conti's sacrifice fly. Smith, with a 2-for-3 day, has now hit safely in six straight games, as well as 17 of his last 19 contests. Conti, meanwhile, is now 5-for-7 since being moved to the seventh spot in the batting order on Friday night.

Ennis pitched 5.1 innings for Richmond to earn the win, allowing all eight of the Tribe's hits along with both runs. Travis Phelps, Bobby Jones, and Joe Dawley combined to shut down the Indians' bats over the final 3.2 innings, with Dawley earning his fifth save of the season.

The Braves host the Indians once again on Sunday afternoon, in the finale of the four game series. Pascual Coco (1-4, 5.76) will pitch for Indianapolis and Ryan Glynn (1-2, 4.63) goes for Richmond. The Tribe will then travel to Norfolk to play four game series before returning to Indianapolis to host Buffalo on May 9 at 7 p.m.

Indianapolis Box Score:

Steve Scarborough now 6-for 56 (.107) with 3 BB's and 22 K's -- that's hard to fathom...

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 8, High Desert 6

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Quakes Win a Bizarre One 8-6

ADELANTO, CA ? On a night where almost everything possible happened, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes held on for a hard-earned 8-6 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Saturday?s game featured a base runner getting hit with a ground ball, an umpire being hit two different times by ground balls, two men picked off base and a bench-clearing raucous that saw Mavs' first baseman Froilan Villanueva ejected.

The Mavs trailed early, as Brian Mazone allowed a two-run home run to Jeff Mathis for a 2-0 lead in the first. Mazone would settle down over the next four scorless innings, working his best outing of the season. The Mavs got on the board in the second, as Scott Candelaria scored on an error by Quakes shortstop Tommy Murphy. The Mavs tied the game in the fourth, as Candeleria, who reached base on a ground ball that hit Jason Belcher on a potential hit-and-run, scored on Chris Morris? RBI double off winning pitcher Jake Woods (2-2).

The Mavs took their only lead on the night in the fifth, as Johnny Raburn singled and scored on Villanueva?s RBI double.

After Mazone left with a 3-2 advantage, David Nolasco (0-2) came in and failed to hold the lead. The Quakes scored four runs in the sixth, keyed by Nick Gorneault?s two-run, go-ahead single, to take a 6-3 lead.

The Mavs got one in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4, but the Quakes added two runs in the seventh off Justin Backsmeyer on run-scoring hits from Michael Napoli and Gorneault. Belcher?s second homer of the year, a two-run shot in the seventh, rounded out the scoring, pulling the Mavs to within 8-6. Jon Rouwenhorst worked the final two frames for his third save.

The benches emptied in the top of the eighth, when Villanueva and Jason Coulie started to argue with Coulie on first. Villanueva pushed Coulie off the bag after a pickoff throw to first, which led to his ejection and the benches emptying.

With the win, the Quakes take over first place at 17-11. The Mavs end their two-game winning streak with the loss.

The Mavs and Quakes meet in the rubber game of the three-game set on Sunday at 3:05. Danny Kolb (0-2) faces Dan Mozingo (2-3) of the Quakes.

David Weiser's comments on Saturday's action:

NOTE: The Vipers are some sort of an Arena Football League team -- I had to look it up http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

A good crowd, considering the Tenn. Valley Vipers were home tonight, playing at the VBC and it was another Saturday night that turned chilly. People with pullover sweats, jackets, even with their hoods on....... It wasn't as bad as last Saturday, which was the cause for my malady, but I wasn't dressed for the north wind blowing in that erupted in the late innings, so I left after eight....... At that point, it was all over for Chattanooga. Matt Parker got out of a threat in the 8th after giving up a two-out walk and a double to Chris Haas in the 8th, but he struck out former Huntsville Star Creighton Gubanich to end the inning. Parker faced four batters in the 9th and picked up his 2nd save.

There were no heroic catches, as in Friday night's affair. Dave Krynzel tried to make a diving catch on what turned out to be a bloop hit for Ray Olmedo, but he came up empty, loading the bases and setting up Chattanooga's 2nd run when Andrew Beattie hit a deep fly ball out to Cristian Guerrero. That was as close to an exciting situation as I saw tonight........ Pedro Liriano was in fine form, going full to hitters only four times tonight, leading to a pair of walks. His first, to lead off the game, resulted in the Lookouts' 1st run when Steve Smitherman hit a 2-out single through short and on into left, scoring Wilmy Caceres, who was re-obtained by the Reds last Tuesday........ Liriano has now given up just 2 ER in 12 1/3 innings in his last 2 starts....... For the Stars, it was their 6th win in 8 games and their 10th in 14 games. With a 17-11 record, the Stars are currently the most successful of the Brewers' four minor league affiliations.

The Stars scored in the 2nd inning after Guerrero hit a grounder to Andrew Beattie at 2nd base. Beattie made the tag on incoming Brandon Gemoll, then hesitated to make the throw to first, giving him enough time to drop it anyway......... Guerrero would steal second, go to third on a fielder's choice, and score on a 2-1 wild pitch to Richard Paz.........

In the 3rd, Ryan Knox hit a 2-out bloop double to shallow right field that chased Dernell Stenson back beyond the grass. The ball dropped in back of Stenson, and Knox, with his speed, slid easily into second. After stealing third, his league-leading 10th base, Knox scored on Krynzel's single to center, putting the Stars ahead for the first time in the game.......... Gemoll made it 3-1 in the 4th inning with a solo HR over the third tier Knology sign in right field, his 1st of the year. It was Gemoll's first hit in 10 at-bats against Chattanooga pitching this season........

Plagued by wildness in the 6th, Dustin Moseley walked the bases full, then walked Joel Alvarado, forcing in Krynzel who had singled to right to start the inning....... Alvarado was the 1st Huntsville player to walk four times in a 9-inning game since Scott Sollmann walked four times on July 24, 1999 --- against the Chattanooga Lookouts. Jeff Deardorff was the last player to walk four times in a game, but that was in that 18-inning marathon the Stars played last August 4 against, yeh, the Lookouts!

Have you ever seen a 4-9 on your scorecard? It happened after Krynzel led off the 6th....... Chris Hart hit a skyscraper to right field that Guy Senjem must have had trouble tracking. The ball finally touched off his glove, only to fall into the glove of 2nd baseman Beattie, who got it just before it hit the ground.

This night was the anniversary of Creighton Gubanich's debut in the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1999. He would become one of four players in MLB history to hit a grand-slam HR as his first major league hit........ Thursday, he marked his return to Joe Davis Stadium by playing in his 1,000th minor league game.

The Stars are now 9-0 this season on Fridays and Saturdays combined....... Ryan Knox is 3-for-17 since his 14-game hit streak ended, but tonight, he hit his 2nd double in as many days, doubling his total for the season....... Ben Hendrickson will make his first start since April 9 on May 11th........ Mickey Lopez has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners. Lopez, one of the best from the Brewer era, played for the Stars from 1999-2000, is tied for 10th on the all-time stolen base list, and holds the club record for the longest hitting streak in a season.
