Indianapolis 4, Richmond (Braves) 2

Indy Site Game Summary:

RICHMOND, VA. -- Pete Zoccolillo and Keith Luuloa collected five of the Indianapolis Indians' nine hits Sunday afternoon to lead the Indians to a 4-2 win over the Richmond Braves. The victory gave the Indians (10-18) a split of the four-game series as they head to Norfolk to start a four-game set Monday.

Zoccolillo led off the second inning with a double and went to third on Luuloa's one-out single. Zoccolillo scored the game's first run when Wilton Veras lofted a sacrifice fly to right.

The Indians stretched the lead to 3-0 when Zoccolillo and Luuloa both scored in the fourth inning. With one out, Zoccolillo singled to center. One out later, Luuloa sliced a double into the right field corner driving home Zoccolillo. Pitcher Pascual Coco drove home Luuloa with a bloop single into left-center, the first base hit for Coco in his nine-year career.

Coco (2-4) turned in his third consecutive strong outing on the mound. The righthander gave up four hits in the first three innings, but settled down to retire 11 straight Braves from the end of the third through the sixth.

The Braves ran themselves out of a big inning in the second. Travis Wilson, who led off with a single, was gunned down at the plate with nobody out on a double by Jesse Garcia. On the next pitch, Garcia was thrown out at third attempting to steal.

In six starts, Coco has recorded a 3.82 ERA over the first six innings. He reached the seventh for the second time Sunday, and struggled for the second time as Richmond plated both of their runs. The first four batters reached on three singles and a hit batsmen. A sacrifice fly by Nick Green cut the Tribe's lead to 3-2.

Shane Nance, making his first appearance with the Indians since being sent down from Milwaukee Thursday, took over with two on and one out and struck out the next two hitters to preserve the lead.

"Nance saved the day," Indians pitching coach Mike Caldwell said. "He was fantastic and shows why we need a lefthander in the bullpen." The Indians played the first 27 games of the season without a lefthander on the pitching staff before Nance's outing Sunday.

Luuloa's third hit of the afternoon helped the Tribe add an insurance run in the ninth. The Hawaii native singled to open the inning, then came around to score for the second time on a pinch-hit triple by Scott Seabol.

Roberto Giron earned his fourth save pitching the ninth. He retired the first two men easily, but a walk and a hit batsman put the potential tying and winning runs on base. Giron got pinch hitter Mike Hubbard to pop out to end the game.

High Desert 7, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 6, 10 innings

Dan Kolb pitches a 1-2-3 first... Kade Johnson returning from injury..... DJ Clark with a wind-assisted 2-run bomb. A couple of unearned runs, with a sac fly RBI from Brian Foster

I've joined squarepusher in checking out the audio -- 6-6 headed to the tenth; Daryl Clark with a big two-out base knock to drive in the tying run (a limping Johnny Raburn) in the bottom of the 8th; the Mavs are 0-19 when not leading after eight innings this year, according to announcer Mike Lindskog. Here's hoping to break that streak -- MassBrew

Froilan Villanueva with a two-out double driving in Ralph Santana for the win; Tony Stavros with the win with a perfect 2.1 IP...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Froilan Villanueva?s RBI double to score Ralph Santana capped a wild weekend at Mavericks Stadium, as the Mavs took the rubber game of the three-game set from the Quakes, winning on Sunday by a score of 7-6 in 10 innings.

Santana walked with one out, then raced around from first base to score the game-winning run, as the Mavs rallied for their third win in their last four games. Villanueva?s hit came off losing pitcher Cliff Smith (0-2), who allowed the Mavs to tie the game with an unearned run in the eighth inning. It was the first extra-inning win for High Desert this year.

Tony Stavros (1-1) faced seven batters without allowing anyone to reach, to earn his first win as a Maverick. Starting pitcher Danny Kolb had his best outing of the year, but got a no-decision after 5.2 innings. Kolb allowed just two earned runs, while striking out a season-best six with only one walk.

The Mavs took the early lead on Daryl Clark?s league-leading 12th homer of the year, a two-run shot to right field to put the Mavs up 2-0. After the Quakes got a run in the fourth, the Mavs added a pair of unearned runs off Quakes starter Dan Mozingo in the fifth for a 4-1 lead.

The Quakes finally got to Kolb in the sixth, scoring three times to tie the game at 4-4. Kolb left leading 4-2 with two men on base, but Kenny Ray couldn?t hold the lead, as Derek Mann picked up a two-out hit to drive in a pair.

The teams traded runs before the Quakes took a 6-5 lead in the eighth, as the second Mav error of the game allowed an unearned run to score. Daryl Clark?s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the inning tied the game at 6-6. Clark now has 31 RBIs to lead the Cal League in that category as well!

After an off-day on Monday, the Mavs will travel to San Bernardino to face the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday night. J.M. Gold makes his second start of the year as he throws for the Mavs.

High Desert Box Score:

Take away Tony Stavros' one hideous outing when he had an 11-run lead on a cold California night, and his ERA is well under 2.00; Daryl Clark on base four more times...

David Weiser's Huntsville News:

Includes the injury updates...

2-OUT RALLIES DOOM STARS

Chattanooga has one of the most powerful lineups in the league (2nd in HRs). Good hitters seem to grow there. In the past five years, four Chattanooga hitters have won batting titles, including the Brewers' Brady Clark, although a Lookout player has not won a home run title since 1992....... This year seems to no exception, so there's little room for error by a pitching staff or by the defense. You can't afford to give this team too many breaks......... That's just what the Stars did on this sunny, warm and breezy Sunday afternoon........

Seven walks and an error. Eight runs with two out, three runs the result of a throwing error by Ryan Gripp, three as the result, direct or indirect, of a walk......... So the Stars wind up with a split with one of the worse teams in the league, instead of a sweep, or at least 3 of 4........ The Stars will get a day off, then travel to BellSouth Park and play four more with Chattanooga starting Tuesday. Pedro Martinez (3-1, 0.75) will match up with John Koronka (2-2, 3.19).

Now I'll note that this was a Freudian slip by David, listing Pedro Martinez, but the way Luis has been pitching, it's easy to see why this happened http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Ben Diggins had an 11-pitch, 1-2-3 first inning, a harmless 15-pitch second inning, letting Chris Haas reach 2nd on a stolen base, and looked to be clear of the 3rd, after getting Ray Olmedo and Bobby Basham out on a 1-2 fly out to left, and a 1-2 grounder to third........ But then Diggins went 3-and-0 on Wilmy Caceres, who then ripped a fast ball to center. Alejandro Diaz then got hold of an 0-and-1 slider and pulled it in the direction of Ryan Gripp, but Gripp's throw was short and off-target to Brandon Gemoll, who tried to dig it out of the dirt....... With the wind blowing out to left, Guye Senjem (who is not a Dutch product. He was born and lives in Minnesota) sent a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right that Cristian Guerrero helplessly watched.

In the 4th, Diggins gave up a leadoff walk to Dernell Stenson and retired Reed Secrist and Ray Olmedo, but then perhaps because of a breakdown in mechanics, fell into a streak of wildness, walking three straight hitters. The final walk to Caceres forced in Stenson and an infield single by Diaz scored Olmedo to make it 5-1........ Digs got out of the inning, but that was all for his day. Ryan Miller came in and had a relatively easy time of it in the 5th and 6th innings, allowing a pair of runners to second. Like Diggins, it looked like he would get through the 7th, even though he allowed a leadoff walk to Senjem, but with two out Chris Haas singled to short on his first pitch, sending Senjem to third and Reed Secrist pulled a pitch into the wind that just cleared the wall near the 345 marker in left field. The Lookouts now had an 8-1 lead.

"All it takes is a few runs to get back in this ballgame" ....... Those, in essence, are the words of crazed optimism I heard from Robert Portnoy. I'm impressed with anyone who can sound that hopeful on the radio, and Robert does a good job in keeping the game alive when all appears to be lost. It seems like he has the power to defiantly create a comeback into happening........ It looked like it would.......

With Paul Darnell in as the new pitcher, the Stars scored quickly, as Dave Krynzel walked, Richard Paz singled to center, and Gemoll singled to right to score Krynzel....... With one out, Guerrero hit a bouncer to Stenson. He threw the ball away trying to throw out Gemoll advancing to second. The lead runner, Paz, scored......... Then with two runners on, light-hitting Chris Barnwell found the air stream and parked a ball just over the Admiral sign in left field, about 350 feet from home plate to make it 8-6........ The Stars have come from behind to win seven times this season. The excitement in Portnoy's voice validated his optimism, but that was all as Scott Dunn and David Gil retired the last four Huntsville batters in the game.

The maligned Lookout pitching staff held the Stars to a .216 average in this series. The Lookouts held the hot-hitting Cristian Guerrero to 1-for-15 in this series. He was 8-for-19 in his six previous games....... Matt Hammons is unscored upon in his last four relief apperarances.... ....... Spotted Ben Hendrickson wearing an appliance on his forearm, but he is still on schedule to return to the rotation when the Stars return home from Chattanooga to face the Tennessee Smokies next weekend....... J.J. Hardy is scheduled to return to action later in the week when the Stars go to Pringles Park to face the Diamond Jaxx.

Daily Menu :

Light fare today -- hope you're not too hungry...

INDIANAPOLIS: at Norfolk (Mets), 6:15 PM Central; we're guessing that newly-acquired 6'7" LHP Nate Teut will get the start; he last pitched on Monday the 28th as mentioned below...

UNHAPPY HOMECOMING: Nate Teut?s return to Albuquerque didn?t go as well as planned as he was roughed up by his former teammates. Teut could not get through the second inning as he allowed three home runs and seven earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.

It could also be new Tribe member Dave Burba, but not sure when the veteran last pitched for Buffalo...

HUNTSVILLE: Idle

HIGH DESERT: Idle

BELOIT: It's odd how both Huntsville and Beloit will play back-to-back home-and-home series this week, in effect, eight-game series. The Snappers are at West Michigan (Tigers); no online audio for the 5:35 PM Central time start. Starting pitcher is listed as TBA, although if LHP Manny Parra gets the nod, he'd be pitching on normal four days' rest.

Nice to see Prince get it turned on again after a small dip in the road. Is it just me or has Huntsville had trouble scoring runs since Hardy went down? That'll happen when you lose a 1.000 OPS guy I suppose

Luckily, the Stars have been able to weather the storm with JJ out, and should win the first-half West Division crown fairly easily, unless West Tennessee or Mobile start playing really well. It's nice to talk about a Brewers' team being a shoe-in for the playoffs, yah?

And, being they are a minor league team, its nice that the team isn't made up of 4A filler and actually includes real-life prospects.

See, now this is what a perfectly written game story tells you that a box score can't:

Failure to get down a bunt, missing signs twice (while daydreaming?), wind shifts and their affects on HR balls, catcher's throw sailing into left field, two runners picked off (while leading off innings!), failure to slide on a steal of second, one obviously upset manager, and a partridge in a pear tree..

See, now you know why you should cherish the game stories and quotes, and why Brewerfan helps link you to more than just the box scores! And you thought it was just your run-of-the-mill extra-inning loss here...
