Indianapolis 11, Norfolk (Mets) 3

Indy Site Game Summary:

NORFOLK, VA -- The Indianapolis Indians' (11-19) bats came through in a big way on Tuesday night, pounding out a season-high 17 hits and 11 runs in defeating the Norfolk Tides (17-12) 11-2. Francisco Campos (2-3) scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings to earn the victory for the Tribe, as six Indians batters including Campos had two hits in the game. Bill Hall, Joe Lawrence, and Wilton Veras each went 3-for-5 for the Indians, as each also scored two runs.

The Tribe offense threatened in the top of the first inning, jumped on the board in the second, broke the game open in the fifth, and kept the momentum going from there as the team had at least one hit in each of the first eight innings.

Jason Conti doubled with two outs in first inning, but the Indians were turned away when Conti was gunned down attempting to score on Scott Seabol's single to left. Norfolk starter Pat Strange (3-1) was not as lucky in the top of the second, however, as the Indians jumped on the righthander for three runs off of five hits in the inning. With one out, Cody McKay, Lawrence, and Veras hit consecutive singles to load the bases for Campos, who helped himself by hitting a single to centerfield scoring McKay. Mark Budzinski followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Lawrence, and then Hall singled to center to score Veras and give the Indians an early 3-0 lead.

The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Norfolk catcher Joe Depastino launched a moonshot over the leftfield wall for a solo home run off of Campos. From that point, it was nearly all Indians, as the Tribe limited the Tides to only two more runs, both solo homers off the bat of Jorge Valendia while the Indians put runs on the board in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

The Indians then broke the game wide open in the top of the fifth inning plating four runs on three hits and one error while chasing Strange from the game after only 4.1 innings having allowed 11 hits and seven runs, five earned. Conti led off the frame with a walk, stole second base on a pickoff attempt by Strange, and stole third base on Pete Zoccolillo's one out walk. After a groundball off the bat of McKay was booted at shortstop allowing Conti to score and Zoccolillo to move to second. After Lawrence singled to load the bases, Veras' single scored Zoccolillo and McKay. Veras later scored on a passed ball which made the score 7-1.

Zoccolillo doubled home Hall in the sixth inning, Lawrence scored on a Campos double play groundout in the seventh, and Conti hit a two-run home run in the eighth which scored himself and Hall to round out the Indians scoring. Shane Nance pitched the final two innings for Indianapolis, allowing three hits and one run.

The two teams will play the third game of the four-game series on Wednesday night with David Manning (1-0, 2.50) facing Norfolk's Mike Bacsik (0-2, 6.63). The Indians return home on Friday night to face the Buffalo Bisons for a four-game series which includes a fireworks night on Saturday.

Beloit 4, West Michigan (Tigers) 3

Snappers win another close one; Wilhelmsen (4-0) and Breslow combine nicely...

West Michigan Site Game Summary:

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - For the West Michigan Whitecaps, the last eight games have been decided by one run. Unfortuntely for the 'Caps they have been on the losing side of seven of them. Despite some early offense and right fielder Brent Clevlen's second homer of the year, the 'Caps lost to the Snappers 4-3.

The 'Caps started early as second baseman Juan Francia scored on a groundout by Wilton Reynolds in the bottom of the first. Brent Clevlen led off the second inning with a solo homer over the Batteries Plus Deck for his second home run of the year but it wouldn't be enough. With his father Cecil in town, Snappers first baseman Prince Fielder hit a two-RBI triple in the top of the third to give Beloit the lead for good.

The 'Caps have not beaten Beloit at Fifth Third Ballpark since the 2000 season, a series of ten straight losses. They will try again Wednesday night in the third game versus Beloit. Scheduled starters are Humberto Sanchez (2-3, 2.70) for the 'Caps and Dennis Sarfate (2-0, 1.96) for the Snappers.

Come on HD! If they win, then we'll have all 5 wins today.

Edit: Well, they came through. How's that, 5 for 5 on the day for the organization.

(When all the farm teams win, we give the thread the five-star treatment -- the Brewer win was a nice bonus! - MassBrew.)

High Desert 8, Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, 11 innings

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Mavs Prevail Behind Solid Bullpen

SAN BERNARDINO, CA- Kade Johnson's first hit since returning from his injured right ankle helped the Mavs win their second straight game, as the High Desert Mavericks defeated the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park, by a score of 8-5 in 11 innings.

Johnson's go-ahead, two-run double would have never been possible had it not been for an amazing performance by the High Desert Bullpen. Aaron Dean, Justin Gordon, Justin Backsmeyer and Bobby Bystrowski combined to allow just two runs, only one earned, in ten innings of work.

Dean came on for J.M. Gold who left with an unspecified injury after just one inning, and the Mavs trailing 3-0. Dean worked scoreless relief for four straight innings, before running into trouble in the sixth.

The Mavs had taken the lead earlier in the inning, scoring four runs off the 66ers bullpen. Scott Candelaria and Ralph Santana each had two-run singles to give the Mavs a 5-3 lead. They did however load the bases, and get nothing for their effort, as reliever Justin Blood struck out Froilan Villanueva, Daryl Clark and Kade Johnson.

The 66ers tied it with two runs off Dean in the bottom of the inning, as Eddie Menchaca picked up a clutch hit to drive in a run. The tying run scored on the same play as center fielder Chris Morris had trouble fielding the single to center.

Each bullpen pitched well thereafter, as neither team had very many chances. The 66ers best scoring opportunity came off Gordon in the ninth, when runners were at first and second with one out. Backsmeyer (1-1) was called out of the pen, and threw just one pitch as John Castellano lined out to Morris in center field. Morris made the catch and threw to second base, doubling off Shin-Soo Choo, who was running on contact.

The Mavs finally took the lead in the top of the 11th, as Morris doubled to lead off the inning. After Villanueva's sac bunt, the 66ers chose to walk Clark intentionally. That set the stage for Johnson's game-winning hit off Brian Strelitz (2-1). Johnson would later score on a hit by Candelaria, who finished the night with a season-best four RBIs.

Bystrowski worked a scoreless 11th inning for his team-leading seventh save of the year.

The win gives the Mavs two straight wins overall, and two straight road wins for the first time this season. The Mavs have also won four of their last five games overall.

The 66ers started Seattle Mariners closer Kaz Sasaki who has been on the disabled list with a sore lower back. Sasaki threw 19 pitches and faced four men in his first career rehab appearance with the 66ers. He struck out two and walked one without allowing a run or a hit.

On Wednesday night, the Mavs send Chris Saenz (2-2) to the hill against Troy Cate (2-2) of the 66ers. Game time on Wednesday night is at 7:05.

The Mavs return home this Friday to face Stockton.

High Desert Box Score:It's worth mentioning again the work of the relief crew last night; I'm pretty sure the game story from the Daily Press will again later today...

High Desert comes through with an 8-5 win over Inland Empire in 11 innings!! Kade Johnson with the game winning double in the 11th, and it appears like the HD bullpen threw for 10 innings today as JM Gold was hurt, as mentioned above. In an interesting sidenote, Kaz Sasaki started the game for Inland, pitching one inning. Quite a day for the Brewers organization today, let's hope for a repeat tomorrow!! Let's sweep those Cubbies!!

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Quote on Hart from Sandy Guerrero, too...

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=55

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT

Coming in on the heels of a harrowing bus ride, rain beating down on their bus like a meteor storm as it rode through the threatening dark grey sky, the Stars caught a break in the weather and decimated the Lookouts with a lightning bolt borrowed from the trip....... On an absolutely still night at Chattanooga's BellSouth Park, the Stars exploded for 4 home runs, the most in one game since August 18, 2001 against the Smokies. But it was the single-handed work of Corey Hart that inflicted most of the punishment --- 2 home runs, including a grand-slam that put the game away in the 7th inning and 7 RBIs.

The 7th inning began with the Stars nursing a 3-2 lead..... John Koronka, wilting in the humidity, gave way to Casey DeHart, who immediately walked Dave Krynzel......... Richard Paz, who next to J.J. Hardy, probably has the best eye at the plate for the Stars, walked on four pitches. Ryan Gripp scores and the score is 4-2........ One Hart comes in. Dehart goes out......... Corey, the team's best RBI man and 2nd best in the league, had a 2-out, 2-run single in the 3rd inning to break up a 1-1 tie, and stood at the plate looking for more....... Without the whisper of a wind, Hart launched reliever Dave Therneau's 2-2 pitch, a hanging breaking ball, off the scoreboard for a grand-slam HR, his 2nd of the season. Another Stars victory for the second coming of Mark McGwire..

The Stars go to 18-12 and remain three games in front in the Western Division race. They have won 7 of their last 10....... On paper before the season began, we were the team to beat and the Stars have gone out and proven it and if 1st place is Olympus, then Corey Hart is our god of war........ Before the game was over, Hart added one more shot........ In the top of the 9th, Hart went for the moon with a towering shot into a still sky in left field for his 2nd HR of the game and his 7th RBI, the most by a Stars player since Pete Zoccolillo had his 3-HR day vs. the Smokies last August ....... Though it was Hart's show, it was a field day for some other Stars hitters........

Brandon Gemoll hit a 0-1 pitch off John Koronka in the 2nd inning that appeared to hit off the Victory Chevrolet sign in right-center field. Gemoll rounded second then headed back, thinking he had a ground-rule double when he saw umpire Tyler Bolick make the circular motion with his hand....... The press box, puzzled because they believed they saw the ball hit the sign, was told it had hit the light pole above the sign, instead....... Chris Barnwell blasted his 2nd HR in as many games in the 8th inning. He's the first hitter to do that since Keith Luuloa homered in three consecutive games last August.

Stars lefty Luis Martinez once again had to get the wildness out of his system, his worst since walking four and hitting a batter in his first start on April 5, but he managed to pitch his way out of jam after jam with his slider, breaking ball, and fastball and some slick infield defense, keepng his ERA under 1.00 at a league-leading 0.86........ Matt Childers struck out 5 in relief, a personal high in his three seasons with the Stars........ Hart now has 29 RBI in 28 games, far and above the best RBI man on the Stars. Only league leading hitter Miguel Cabrera of the Carolina Mudcats has more RBI than games played in the league. Hart made his 1st error in 11 games, but in an inning where the Stars made two in the 4th, neither hurt them........ He won't win the Gold Glove there right now, but he's improving.........

The Stars are 6-3 since J.J. Hardy left the lineup with a strained hip flexor muscle. J.J., by the way, is restless and anxious to get back into action, hoping to play at the end of this current series, but more realistically, it will be sometime when the team goes to Jackson........ Ben Hendrickson's next start has been pushed back to May 11. That's because Mike Jones will miss his turn tomorrow against Chattanooga because of a cut on the finger of his throwing hand. Derek Lee (3-0, 2.45) will make his 3rd start of the year. The Stars will get their second look at Josh Hall (1-3, 2.83), who went 6 innings, giving up 4 hits in an 8-3 victory for the Lookouts last week.

Wednesday's Daily Menu allows you to sneak in a little Stars' audio before flipping to the Brewers' sweep attempt, and back-to-back evening choices as well....

All times Central, pitchers subject to change, pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed; no audio available for Beloit today...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP David Manning at Norfolk (Mets), 6:15 PM

HUNTSVILLE: LHP Derek Lee, always there when the Stars need him, at Chattanooga (Reds), 11:15 AM

HIGH DESERT: RHP Chris Saenz at Inland Empire (Mariners), 9:05 PM; the Mavs need him to eat some innings today...

BELOIT: RHP Dennis Sarfate at West Michigan (Tigers), 5:35 PM

Yesterday's organizational sweep was all the more impressive when you realize all five wins came on the road -- a good day, indeed -- minus J.M. Gold's injury issues...

INLAND EMPIRE (CAL) RHP KAZUHIRO SASAKI started his rehab assignment and pitched a scoreless inning for the 66ers, but did not figure in the decision in an eventual 8-5 loss to the High Desert Mavericks. Sasaki, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury, struck out the first batter he faced, induced a groundout to the shortstop, issued a base-on-balls and struck out the final batter to complete the inning. Selected as an American League All-Star last season, Sasaki was 1-1 with four saves and a 9.00 ERA this season before being placed on the disabled list on April 23. High Desert C KADE JOHNSON hit a two-run double to snap a 5-5 tie in the top of the 11th inning. Johnson, who is batting .331, has hit nine homers and driven in 29 runs in just 29 games this season.

HUNTSVILLE (SOU) 3B COREY HART hit two homers and drove in a career-high seven runs to lead the Stars to a 10-3 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts. Hart, who had not recorded a hit in his previous eight at-bats, singled in two runs in the third frame to give Huntsville a 3-1 lead. After flying out to center field in his next at-bat, the 11th-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2000 crushed a grand slam to cap a five-run seventh and added a solo homer in his final at-bat to close out the scoring for the Stars. Including last night's offensive outburst, the 21-year-old Kentucky native has a .298 batting average and has knocked in a team-leading 29 RBI.
