Link Report for Games of Monday, May 12th

Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday:

TODAY: The Indians continue an eight-game homestand with the final game of a four-game series with Buffalo. The Indians need a win to salvage a split of the series. The Tribe has been outscored 27-18 in the series. The Bisons boast the top record in the league while the Tribe has the worst mark in the IL. Last year the teams split the eight-game season series including the four contests played in Indianapolis. In the last 10 years, the Tribe has won the season series from the Bisons just twice (1994 and 2001).

The Indians have scored five or more runs in each of the last six games going 3-3 in that span. The Indians have scored 40 runs (6.7 rpg) and are hitting .305 (65-for-213) in those games. The Tribe opposition has scored 38 runs and is hitting .273 (60-for-220) over the last six games.

YESTERDAY: Buffalo beat the Indians 13-8. The Bisons broke open a one-run game with seven runs in the sixth inning - the biggest inning against the Tribe this season. Seven of Buffalo's runs were unearned coming on three Tribe errors and a passed ball. Bill Hall led the Indians nine-hit attack. He went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI. He hit his second home run of the season. Jason Conti belted his team-leading fifth homer of the year.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander David Manning makes his fourth start and his 10th appearance of the season. Manning made six relief appearances going 0-0 with a 3.52 ERA before being moved into the rotation on April 23. In his three starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA allowing two earned runs in 17.1 innings. Manning has worked seven innings in each of his last two starts allowing one run and five hits in each. For the season, Manning has worked 25.0 innings which is two shy of qualifying for the league leader board. If he had enough innings, Manning would rank second in the IL.

DUROCHER TO START REHAB TUESDAY: RHP Jayson Durocher will join the Indians Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8 and has not pitched this season. Durocher opened 2002 with the Tribe and went 1-0 with a 2.73 ERA and two saves in 20 games before a promotion to Milwaukee. He went 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA in 39 games for the Brewers.

HITTING STREAK REACHES 13: Mark Smith leads the team with a .347 batting average which ranks 10th in the league. He currently boasts a team-high 13-game hitting streak. Smith has hit safely in 24 of his last 26 games (.361, 35-for-97) and leads the team with 16 RBI and 10 multi-hit games. The longest hitting streak last season was 17 games by Ryan Thompson from April 5-23.

HOT AT THE PLATE: The Indians are hitting .284 in May and have scored 57 runs (5.2 rpg). Keith Luuloa leads the team with a .385 batting average. Bill Hall is hitting .378 with a team-high 11 runs, 17 hits and eight RBI. Mark Smith is hitting .361 while Jason Conti has a .350 average and a team-best three home runs.

'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .167 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 0.51 ERA in 13 games allowing one earned run in 17.2 innings. Kolb has struck out 14 batters in his last 9.0 innings (5 G).

ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 23 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 12 games this season, but is just 5-7 in those games. The ninth inning is the only inning in which the Indians have not scored in double figures (6). The Indians have scored just 28 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

LONG BALL PROBLEMS: The Indians have hit 21 home runs which ranks 12th in the IL while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-high 38 long balls. The Tribe has been outhomered 14-10 at Victory Field.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Tuesday vs. Pawtucket - LHP Chris Elmore (1-0, 3.50) vs. RHP Dave Burba (1-3, 3.00)

Wednesday vs. Pawtucket - RHP Dicky Gonzalez (2-2, 4.74) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (2-4, 5.60)

Thursday vs. Pawtucket - RHP Ryan Rupe (3-1, 1.91) vs. LHP Nate Teut (1-1, 3.97)

Friday vs. Pawtucket - RHP Bronson Arroyo (4-1, 3.57) vs. RHP Francisco Campos (2-4, 5.72)

You'll notice that former Brewer farmhand Paul Stewart will miss the Indianapoils series for Pawtucket, as he pitched in Monday's Pawsox game. He allowed only one run in his start, but his bullpen couldn't hold the lead and Stewart, who has pitched OK, but certainly not overly well, still looks for his first AAA victory.- MB

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Greg LaRocca's solo home run into the teeth of the wind in the top of the eighth inning helped the Buffalo Bisons down the Indianapolis Indians 3-2 at Victory Field on Monday afternoon. The loss drops the Indians (13-22) to 1-3 on the eight-game homestand. The Bisons improved their league-leading record to 22-12.

The Tribe scored first when Joe Lawrence walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning against Buffalo starter Jason Bere forcing in Pete Zoccolillo from third base. Bere pitched five innings on his second rehabilitation start with Buffalo. He allowed three hits and only the one run before giving way to reliever Jose Santiago (1-0) to start the sixth.

After pitching five innings of shutout baseball, David Manning allowed Buffalo to take the lead from the Indians in the top of the sixth inning courtesy of Luis Garcia's two-run double which drive home LaRocca and Ben Broussard, both of whom had reached on walks.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the frame, the Tribe tied the score when Zoccolillo just missed his third home run of the season with a double high off the right field wall to score Jason Conti from first base. Zoccolillo was the only Indians batsman to record two hits on the day, as he finished 2-for-3.

Shane Nance (0-2) relieved Manning in the top of the seventh pitching 1.1 innings allowing three hits including the deciding LaRocca homer to take the loss for the Indians.

Mark Smith had a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, but after an intentional walk to Zoccolillo, Chad Paronto relieved Santiago to record the final out of the inning. Paronto then went on to retire the Indians in the ninth to record his third save of the season for Buffalo.

The Indians will welcome the Pawtucket Red Sox to Indianapolis on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for the first game of a four-game series at Victory Field. Dave Burba (1-3, 3.00) will make his second start for the Indians when he faces Pawtucket's Chris Elmore (1-0, 3.50).

Indianapolis Box Score:

Shane Nance's struggles have extended to AAA; Bill Hall caught stealing twice, he's 3-for-8 now in that department...

The Brewers' performance on Monday made the decision to flip to the High Desert broadcast pretty easy.

But now the Mavs are down 5-0 after one inning, so it seems it's a good night to read about all the big organizational combacks in the AM, when we'll fill in all the details http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Well, all the boxscores are up. Needless to say, it's been a rough day for the organization.

Huntsville:Tennessee 5, Huntsville 1

High Desert:Lake Elsinore 12, HD 2

Beloit (with a win!):South Bend 4, Beloit 3

+ Beloit 4, South Bend 0

Nice outings by the Beloit starters (Sarfarte and Wilhelmsen), and good to see Prince with his walking shoes on as he goes 1-4 in the games w/4 walks.

Indianapolis Star Game Story:

During last night's Brewer broadcast, Jim Powell discussed Cecil Cooper's frustrated quotes from yesterday's article. Wonder if Jim will comment on Coop today:

"Guys can't bunt, guys can't drive in runs with the bases loaded."

"Failure to execute. I'm sick of looking at it."

"We've got guys who want to be in the big leagues, and they can't even bunt. We're going to have bunting practice. I'm frustrated. This was our game to have, bases loaded with one out and we can't produce a run."

"I don't know what to do. I've had second thoughts, you better believe that," he said about his decision to become a manager. "I don't need this kind of aggravation. All they have to do is do is what they're supposed to do to get in the big leagues."

Yikes, and that's not all. I'm worried about the man, read on below...

David Weiser Returns

Brand new "injury" information on RHP's Ben Diggins and Matt Hammons included here, along with an updated pitch count for Ben Hendrickson:

PARROTT ACT

From the Windy Confines of Chicago to the Friendly Confines of Joe Davis Stadium........ If I had one word to use to describe Wrigley Field, it would be simplicity, which is the root charm of baseball --- a game played in the outdoors, on green grass, accompanied by the wafting prescence of Old Style beer, hot dogs, sausages, peppers, and onions, the rowdy screams of thousands of knowledgeable, devoted Cubbie fans, and the classic, bare style of the Wrigley Field scoreboard....... No matter if it's Wrigley Field or Joe Davis Stadium, the game's played by the same rules. The feeling on a personal level of sitting in your seat with a drink and a dog, surrounded by the sights, smells, and sounds of the National Pasttime is one and the same...... Even though the appreciation for the game is so much more lacking in Huntsville than it is in Chicago, it was with no regret that I came back to the Joe this night after watching a dramatic 10-inning game in Chicago, Saturday....... Next stop --- Cooperstown. That's in late July.

Rhett Parrott, the #8 prospect in the Cardinal system, is a Derek Lee type pitcher. His fastball tops out at 90 and he relies mostly on location and movement. When he's on --- he's on, and tonight, he handcuffed the Stars the way you expect Luis Martinez would have done this night or any given night......... Parrott, behind timely hitting and flawless defense, retired 22 of the last 25 hitters he faced, walking only one batter and giving up just 2 hits past the 1st inning in his longest outing of the year......... The Stars got their lone run in the 1st after leadoff hitter Ryan Knox walked on four pitches and moved to third on a single to right by Dave Krynzel.......What should have been a single on an 0-and-2 pitch to Richard Paz, became a force play at second base to drive in Knox, when right fielder Chris Weekly took the ball hit to shallow right, and threw it to shortstop John Nelson who put the tag on Krynzel........ After Corey Hart hit into a 6-4-3 double play, Parrott had the Stars in his pocket. Only J.J. Hardy got past 1st base the rest of the night for the Stars........ J.J. still has that strained hip flexor, and it has allowed him some limited playing time, but the organization does not want to rush his recovery. Tonight was the first time since his injury that he has run the basepaths, and according to what I heard, he felt fine.

Martinez, trying to hold onto his league ERA leadership tonight, was without his favorite catcher, Joel Alvarado, for the first time this season......... If you want to make that excuse for his unspectacular pitching line, that's fine, but I look at the defensive hole in right field caused by the departure of Cristian Guerrero, who made up for his offensive shortcoming somewhat with excellent glovework in right field........ With the Stars ahead 1-0, and two out and two on in the 4th, Yadier Molina hit a high drive toward the foul line in right. Knox, who made an error in right field in Sunday's game, lost the ball as it fell to his right for a two-base error and the Smokies went out in front, 2-0........ Knox, in frustration, kicked the wall in back of him, close to where the ball fell. Gotta wonder why manager Frank Kremblas doesn't put newcomer Daryl Clark in right instead. Clark played a lot of 3rd base for High Desert last season.........

Till that point in the game, Luis was in command........ The play was originally ruled a two-base hit, so the change in scoring saved a streak for Martinez, who had never this season given up more than two earned runs in a game.......... It just continues to hide the whole story about Luis' effectiveness. Unfortunately, he has not been blessed with the steady defense his teammates in the rotation have gotten........ Of the 12 runs Luis has given up this season, half have been unearned. A look at the defensive support the rest of the rotation has received:

Ben Diggins 18 runs, 6 unearned

Mike Jones 12 runs, 1 unearned

Pedro Liriano 14 runs, 2 unearned

Derek Lee 7 runs, 0 unearned

Ben Hendrickson 7 runs, 1 unearned

It was one of only three really hard hit balls off Martinez tonight....... Number two came off the bat of the next batter, John Nelson, a triple, his first of the year, off the wall in right-center field, scoring Molina......... That was enough damage for the night, but the Smokies added two more in the 5th as seven batters came up that inning to face Martinez, capped by Bucky Jacobsen's two-run double off the top of the centerfield wall......... Paz made a nice play that inning, going into the hole to steal a hit away from Skip Schumaker. Paz spun around and threw to Chris Barnwell to make a force play on pitcher Rhett Parrott for the first out....... Newcomer Clark then made a fine play in left to get the second out with runners on first and second. Clark made a diving catch of Corey Erickson's sinking liner in front of him, but no one tonight had Bucky figured out, as he would for the second time in this series, find a way to beat his former team.

The loss shrinks the Stars lead to four games and tomorrow they face the new ERA leader in the league, Dan Haren (5-0, 0.94)........ Haren is the top prospect in the Cardinal organization and led the minors in innings pitched last year....... For this afternoon businessman's special, the Stars send out Pedro Liriano (3-2, 2.82). Liriano has given up just 2 earned runs in 17 1/3 innings over his last three starts.

Again, I ask, why is Knox in right and Clark in left?....... Ben Diggins will miss a couple of starts with arm fatigue........ When Robert Portnoy asked "Why the new buzzcut?", Matt Hammons replied that he wanted to change his karma. Actually, he's been unscored upon in his last six relief appearances, but before the game, he complained about some bad karma in his shoulder........ May turn out to be more than that. He walked off the mound after throwing two strikes to Caonobo Cosme in the 7th inning and was lifted for Ryan Miller........ Miller settled down after a double play ball that inning that got him out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam. He then got the side out in the 8th and 9th innings........ Corey Hart's bat is cold again --- 0-for-18 after tonight and 7-for-39 (.180) in May........ Ben Hendrickson is back in the rotation, but his pitch count limit will be 60 pitches the next time out, as he works his way back........ The Stars are now 0-5 on Mondays.

On a personal note, I'm working days now, so I'm going to have to get these reports done before 3 a.m........ In a sense it's good because you get the story on the game earlier, but it means less time on researching records or other obscurities, and sometimes, these write-ups will look rushed. Sometimes they do anyway, but now you'll know why.

Looks fine to us, David -- thanks as always! - MB

Lake Elsinore (Padres) 12, High Desert 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? J.J Furmaniak tied a California League record with three home runs on Monday night, as the Lake Elsinore Storm won the opening game of the four-game series with an impressive 12-2 win over the High Desert Mavericks at Mavericks Stadium.

Furmaniak, who had just one home run coming into the game, blasted a first-inning two run shot, followed by a solo shot to lead off the second, and finally another two-run homer off the scoreboard in the fourth. He was unable to pick up his fourth, striking out in the sixth, and flying out deep to right field in the eighth. He finished the game 3-5 with five RBIs, a season-best.

The Storm never trailed in this one, as they jumped on Mavs starter Chris Saenz for five in the first and one in the second, for a 6-0 lead after two innings. Furmaniak?s third bomb of the night made it 8-0 after four, and brought an end to the night for Saenz who allowed all eight earned runs on eight hits.

The Mavs finally got to Storm starter Justin Germano (4-1) in the sixth, as Cristian Guerrero knocked in Johnny Raburn and Jason Belcher drove home Mark Ernster who reached on an error. The Mavs left the bases loaded in the sixth and never threatened again.

The Storm added four in the ninth, getting to reliever Justin Backsmeyer. Jon Benick homered to lead off the inning, his fourth of the year, to lead the charge. Benick finished the night with four hits for the Storm.

Lake Elsinore has won nine of their last eleven games and now has a six-game lead over the Mavericks.

The Mavs will attempt to rebound on Tuesday night as they send Dan Hall (4-2) to the hill against Jon Huber of the Storm, who will be making his first appearance in the California League. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central) at Mavericks Stadium.

High Desert Box Score:

Kenny Ray with an effective bullpen appearance; Justin Backsmeyer with his first truly ineffective one...

Game One: South Bend (Diamondbacks) 4, Beloit 3, eight innings (scheduled for seven)
