JJ Hardy gets his first start in a while. Gets a rocket single in his first at bat.

Gripp gets the start at 3rd, commits an error in the 2nd. Next batter misses a home run by inches. Haren and Liriano are mowing down the hitters. Haren with 7 Ks. Still scoreless after 3.

Lost audio for a bit.

Hardy replaced by Barnwell defensively in the 5th. Stars load the bases in the 5th with 1 out, but Knox strikes out for the 3rd time and Krynzel gets an out. Haren with 9 Ks.

Liriano replaced after 5 scoreless innings, with 4 Ks. Scoreless after 5.

Smokies get on the board in the 7th. 1st & 2nd no one out. Lee makes good play on bunt to get lead runner. Runners to 1st and 3rd on fielder's choice. Double down the line scores a run, but he kept running and they end up with 2 men on 3rd. Gets the Stars out of the inning. 1-0 Smokies.

Interesting end to the top of the 9th. Adams puts runners at the corners with 1 out. Batter stikes out. Kremblas late on the thow to 2nd, but Paz fires back home to get the double play.

Haren dominated the stars with 11 Ks in 7 innings.

Yes it was a depressing game to listen too. The most interesting part was the commercials. The mic never went off so you could year the banter between the announcer and whoever the woman was recording key plays for the game.

Reading bork's updates today (thanks!), I couldn't help but think that the most depressing part of the game was that the Cardinals have their next Matt Morris waiting in the wings in Dan Haren...

Beloit Linescore and Game Blurb from the Snappers' Site:

Another reason we need an announcer at Beloit is that the voice of the team normally supplies online game summaries, of which this doesn't exactly qualify -- that's OK, we still love our friends in Beloit management http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Indianapolis 7, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 2

Bill Hall is simply smoking in May! Only at .257 now, but when you consider where he was just a couple of weeks back...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bill Hall pounded out four hits and Keith Luuloa blasted a two-run homer as the Indianapolis Indians (14-23) defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 7-2 Tuesday night at Victory Field. Dave Burba picked up his first victory in an Indianapolis uniform making a rare relief performance.

Burba, 2-3 overall, pitched a season-high seven innings striking out seven to earn the victory for the Tribe in relief of Jayson Durocher, who made a one-inning start on a rehabilitation assignment for the Milwaukee Brewers. Durocher pitched a 1-2-3 first inning striking out two PawSox (20-15) on only nine pitches, but was taken out of the game as planned and relieved by Burba.

Burba surrendered an RBI double to Andy Abad in the fourth inning which cut the Tribe lead to 2-1, but then retired 12 of the next 13 Pawtucket hitters before allowing a lead-off double to Bill Haselman in the eighth.

The Indians rapped out 11 base hits in the contest, and jumped on PawSox starter Chris Elmore (1-1) from the very beginning by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hall, who was 4-for-4, doubled home Joe Lawrence and then scored on Mark Smith's RBI groundout later in the frame. For Hall it was the first four-hit game of his Triple-A career, and first since August 19, 2001, when he played at Double-A Huntsville.

Luuloa's homer in the fourth inning made it 4-1 Indians. The Tribe added three runs in the fifth with Hall singling in a run and scoring.

Smith came into the game with a 14-game hitting streak, which was the longest active streak in the International League, but finished 0-for-3.

The teams continue the series Wednesday with a 2 p.m. Business Day Special.

High Desert 6, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 3

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Ralph Santana?s two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning, snapped a 3-3 tie, helping the High Desert Mavericks win a much-needed 6-3 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm.

With the Mavs dropping the series-opener on Monday night by a score of 12-2, Lake Elsinore looked to drop the Mavs for a fifth straight time, head-to-head. Strong pitching and timely hitting allowed the Mavs to close to within five games of first place and four games of .500 at 17-21. High Desert has won nine of their last 12 games.

Dan Hall was rolling through the first four frames, holding the Storm scoreless as the Mavs held a 2-0 lead. Marcus Nettles? two-out triple knocked in a run to make it 2-1 in the fifth. J.J. Furmaniak then hit his fourth home run in two games, a monstrous shot to left field for a 3-2 Storm lead.

The Mavs had opportunities to tie the game but failed to score a runner from third with one out in the seventh inning. Cristian Guerrero?s leadoff triple to left field in the bottom of the eighth would not go wasted though, as Scott Candelaria knocked him in to tie the game at 3-3. After Chris Morris reached on a throwing error, both he and Candelaria would score on Santana?s two-run triple down the left-field line. Santana would score on a Todd West single as the Mavs added a run for a 6-3 lead.

Aaron Dean, (3-2) who had his best outing in relief, gave way to Bobby Bystrowski after three innings of scoreless relief. Bystrowski worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Joseph Hastings looking to end it. For Bystrowski, it was his team-leading ninth save of the year.

Johnny Raburn finished the game 4-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, to lead the Mavericks. Raburn scored a run in the first when Guerrero singled him in for a 1-0 lead. Raburn would score in the third on a Mark Ernster sac fly.

The Mavericks were 0-17 when trailing after seven innings coming into Tuesday night's game. Lake Elsinore was 17-0 when leading after seven innings.

The Mavs look to gain more ground, as they send Brian Mazone (0-2) to the hill against Jason Wiedmeyer (2-0) of the Storm on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

High Desert Box Score from BA:

Manager Tim Blackwell is ultra--agressive on the basepaths, but this team easily has the speed to pull it off; it's been 7 or 8 games since the Mavericks have homered; CF Chris Morris back in the line-up; Froilan Villanueva finally begins his 3-day suspension for shoving an opposing player; Mavs' pitchers strike out 14, walk only one -- yes!

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

DUEL IN THE SUN

Day baseball....... I love day baseball........ Usually that feeling isn't shared in Huntsville where you'll find so many one-dimensional sports fans, but today's Businessman's Special drew the largest mid-week afternoon crowd since June 16, 1999 when over 4,200 came through the turnstiles for a game against the Diamond Jaxx, whom we were in a race with for 1st place in the waning days of the first half........ Most of them were kids who were given the day off by the school system for their attendance record, their grades, or whatever. Some came from as far as Morgan County.

While they were having more fun crowding the concession lines than watching the game, I was less oblivious to the fact that this was one grand pitching duel and that was to be expected........ Danny Haren, the league's ERA leader and #1 prospect in the Cardinal organization was facing off against the Stars' hot Dominican righthander, Pedro Liriano, who had given up just 2 runs in his last 17 1/3 innings over his last three starts....... Both teams --- hot. Both pitchers --- hot!

Huntsville hitters are probably delighted to fatten up their batting averages now that they are done for awhile with the Smokies......... The Diamond Jaxx pitching staff (4.33 ERA) will look like BP pitching in comparison. Tuesday, the D'Jaxx gave up 23 hits to the Barons in a 12-inning, 7-6 loss......... Smokie pitchers held the Stars to a .150 average in this series, the first 4-game series the Stars have lost this year. The Stars were able to get just 4 runs on 17 hits in 35 innings, while striking out 32 times and being shutout twice. It was the first time since April 2001 that the Smokies shutout the Stars twice in a series........

During one overpowering stretch today from the 1st through the 3rd innings, Danny Haren struck out 6 of 7 batters, and had 9 Ks through 4 frames, all the while displaying major league-level control........ Haren's only walk --- that to pinch-hitter Chris Cosbey ---- came in the 5th when the Stars threatened for the only time in the game......... Richard Paz and Ryan Gripp led off with back-to-back singles through the infield. Mike Kremblas then placed a bunt to the third base side to move the runners into scoring position. Cosbey then ran the count full before Haren, who had issued only 5 free passes in 48 innings all season, gave him the free ticket to load the bases........ But with one out, Ryan Knox struck out on a 1-2 pitch and Dave Krynzel pounded a ball on the ground to former Stars' 1st baseman Bucky Jacobsen to end the inning. After that inning, Smokie pitchers retired 12 of the next 13 Stars hitters.

The Smokies scored their only run off hard-luck loser Derek Lee........ In the 7th, Yadier Molina and John Nelsonhit back-to-back singles. Danny Haren dropped a bunt, but Lee quickly and cleanly fielded it and forced Molina at third........ Skip Schumaker then hit a grounder to Brandon Gemoll, who forced Haren at second. With runners on the corners and two out, .341-hitting Caonabo Cosme hit a double inside the right field line, his league-leading 18th of the season....... Nelson scored easily to break the scoreless affair, but Cosme did not see Schumaker hold up at third. Schumaker saw him coming and broke for the plate, and was retired in a rundown, ending the inning, but in a pitching match-up like this, one run may have been --- and was the difference in the game........ Cosme, 6th among SL batting leaders, was a former Oakland prospect during the years the Stars were affiliated with the A's. He was signed very young out of the Dominican and played an apprenticeship of 539 games in Class A, hitting .247, before moving up to Class AA-Midland in 2001.

The Stars rest Wednesday before going on an 8-game road trip, taking them first to The Big Chip, then to Greenville. The Stars are 3-1 after a day of rest.

Former Stars Robinson Cancel and Eric Martins are teammates on the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League. Cancel is hitting .190 and Martins is at .292. Elvis Pena, with the Long Island Ducks of the same league, is hitting .175.

A quick note on DJ Clark. He hit some balls well. One would have been a homer in High Desert, but he's learning how the ball won't carry like it did before.

We all know that Mike Jones is hot, but we like to point out when national recognition is given, as SportsTicker does today:

Huntsville (MIL) righthander Mike Jones has strung together 21 consecutive scoreless innings. After yielding a home run to the first batter he faced on April 27, the 20-year-old Jones has allowed only eight hits to the 79 batters he's faced since. Jones, the 12th player taken in the 2001 draft, gave up only two hits over eight scoreless innings on May 10 to lower his ERA to 2.43. After posting a 3.12 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 139 innings in lower level Class A Midwest League last year, Jones skipped over advanced Class A High Desert and was seventh in the Southern League in ERA through May 12.

Hey Toby I was wondering if you had a take on Dan Hall scouting wise. His a bit old for A+ at 23, but it's not ridiculous a midseason promotion (not the Huntsville needs more pitching) and he'd be on track and holding your own in Coors II merits consideration too.
