Link Report for Games of Wednesday, May 14th

Indianapolis Media Notes for Wednesday:

TODAY: The Indians continue an eight-game homestand with the second game of a four-game series with Pawtucket. The Indians went 1-3 against Buffalo to open the homestand and were outscored 30-20 in the series.

This is the second of eight contests between the Indians and the PawSox. Last year, the Indians won five of the eight games including three of four played at Victory Field. The Indians have won the season series from Pawtucket in two of the five years (2002 & 1998) since the Tribe joined the IL in 1998.

Former Indians Kevin Tolar (1998-99) and Lou Collier (2000-01) are on the PawSox roster. Collier leads the league in RBI.

The Indians have scored five or more runs in seven of the last eight games going 4-4 in that span. The Indians have scored 49 runs (6.1 rpg) and are hitting .305 (84-for-275) in those games. The Tribe opposition has scored 43 runs and is hitting .261 (75-for-287) over the last eight games.

YESTERDAY: The Indians beat Pawtucket 7-2. Dave Burba earned the win with seven innings of work. He allowed two runs while striking out seven. Bill Hall turned in his first four-hit performance at the Triple-A level. He scored twice and drove in two runs. Keith Luuloa added a two-run homer. Mark Smith's 14-game hitting streak ended as he went 0-for-3 with a walk.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his seventh start. Coco has been been victimized by big innings in five of his seven starts. He's allowed a three-run inning in two of his starts (7th inning on 4/29 and 2nd inning on 4/17), four-run innings in two of his starts (3rd inning on 5/9, 5th inning on 4/22) and a six-run inning (4th) on April 6. In his other two starts, he has allowed just two runs in 11.1 innings. Coco is coming off a no-decision against Buffalo last Friday when he gave up five runs in four innings.

DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher started Tuesday and needed just nine pitches to retire Pawtucket in order. He recorded two strikeouts. He is scheduled to start and pitch one inning on Thursday.

HITTING STREAK ENDS AT 14: Mark Smith's 14-game hitting streak was snapped Tuesday with an 0-for-3 performance. The streak was the fourth-longest in the IL this season. Smith leads the Indians with a .333 average, 17 RBI and 10 multi-hit games. He was the Indians Player of the Month for April. Smith has hit safely in 25 of his last 28 games (.346, 36-for-104). The longest hitting streak last season was 17 games by Ryan Thompson from April 5-23.

HOT AT THE PLATE: The Indians are hitting .287 in May and have scored 66 runs (5.1 rpg). Bill Hall leads the team with a .404 average, 13 runs, 21 hits and 10 RBI. Keith Luuloa is hitting .382 and is tied with Jason Conti (.340) for the team lead with three home runs. Mark Smith is batting .326.

'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .175 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 0.48 ERA in 14 games allowing one earned run in 18.2 innings. Kolb has struck out 15 batters in his last 10.0 innings (6 G).

ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 25 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 13 games this season, but is just 6-7 in those games. The ninth inning is the only inning in which the Indians have not scored in double figures (6). The Indians have scored just 28 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

LONG BALL PROBLEMS: The Indians have hit 22 home runs which ranks 12th in the IL while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-high 39 long balls. The Tribe has been outhomered 15-11 at Victory Field. Pawtucket boasts opposite totals. The Paw Sox offense is tied for the league lead with 38 round trippers while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-low 14.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Thursday vs. Pawtucket - RHP Ryan Rupe (3-1, 1.91) vs. RHP Jayson Durocher (0-0, 0.00) / LHP Nate Teut (1-1, 3.97)

Friday vs. Pawtucket - RHP Bronson Arroyo (4-1, 3.57) vs. RHP Francisco Campos (2-4, 5.72)

Indianapolis 11, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 4

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians tied a season high with 11 runs Wednesday afternoon as they beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 11-4 for their second straight win.

The Tribe (15-23) fell behind 2-0 in the first, but scored four times in both the second and third innings to take an 8-2 lead. A three-run fifth stretched the margin to 11-2.

With one out in the second, the Indians loaded the bases on singles by Pete Zoccolillo and Cody McKay and a walk by Keith Luuloa. Wilton Veras singled in the first run before Steve Scarborough cleared the bases with a double to the gap in left-center putting the Indians in the lead for good.

After sending eight men to the plate in the second, the Indians batted around in the third. Luuloa doubled home a run, and McKay doubled home two runs. A fourth run scored on the first of four Pawtucket errors.

McKay finished 3-for-4 with two RBI as the bottom half of the Indians lineup collected seven of the team?s 11 hits.

All eight runs came off Pawtucket starter Dicky Gonzalez who falls to 2-3.

Tribe starter Pasqual Coco (3-4) earned the win with five innings of work. After giving up two runs on four hits in the first, Coco shut out the PawSox (20-16) on five hits over the next four frames.

Travis Miller, Jason Childers and Dan Kolb all worked in relief for the Indians. Pawtucket, which pounded out 15 hits, scored two runs in the ninth.

The series continues Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Victory Field.

Indianapolis Box Score:

Listened to most of this one; the Pawsox didn't do much right except strand batters -- meaning they played miserably, despite outhitting the Tribe; Coco was only sharp once he had to bear down each inning -- that's better than nothing...

Lake Elsinore (Padres) 8, High Desert 3

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Three runs in the ninth inning broke open a close game as the Lake Elsinore Storm held on to beat the High Desert Mavericks by a final of 8-3, on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium. Just one night earlier, the Storm blew an eighth-inning lead, dropping their first game of the year when leading after seven innings.

On Wednesday, there was no rally, as the Lake Elsinore bullpen kept the Mavs off the scoreboard. Kevin Beavers, Jack Cassel and Mike Wodnicki combined to throw four innings of shutout relief.

After the Mavs took the lead 1-0 in the first on a Mark Ernster RBI single, the Storm scored the next three runs. The Storm got an unearned run off Mavs starter Brian Mazone (0-3) in the second, as Josh Carter scored on a Nick Trzesniak fielder?s choice to tie the game at 1-1. Lake Elsinore added two in the fourth, as Trzesniak again knocked in Carter with an RBI double. Trzesniak would then scored on a Jason Clements RBI single to make it 3-1.

The Mavs got one back in the fourth, as Todd West?s ground ball scored Scott Candelaria from third. The teams traded runs in the sixth, as Carter homered for the third time this season, a solo shot, to make it 4-2. The Mavs made it 4-3 in their half of the sixth, as Jason Belcher scored on a Candelaria groundout.

The Storm added a run in the eighth off David Nolasco, and then three more in the ninth to put it away. Josh Barfield knocked in his league-leading 42nd RBI of the year in the ninth.

In the most unusual stat of the night, the Storm pitching staff didn?t strike out a single hitter, while the Mavs pitching staff only walked one man. It didn?t help, as the Mavs lost for the ninth time in 13 meetings with the Storm.

The Mavs finish the series with the Storm on Thursday at Mavericks Stadium, be sending Danny Kolb (1-2) to the hill against Mike Thompson (3-2) of the Storm, at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Well, the Mavs are certainly scrapping with 11 hits Wednesday, with a short bench and all; Cristian Guerrero gone, Brian Foster's thumb healing, Froilan Villanueva in the midst of his three-game suspension, just not enough to win this night...

Today?s Menu allows you to focus on your Ben Sheets / Kerry Wood matinee, and then take in an audio double-dip of Huntsville / High Desert action; I should be able to catch the early Indianapolis action listening to the local Rhode Island station while driving around town tonight?.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio available approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed; no Beloit audio again tonight?

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Jayson Durocher will get in his rehab inning or two prior to LHP Nate Teut taking the mound vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox) at home, 7:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE: Don?t worry, Brewer fans, RHP Mike Jones will take out our Cub frustrations on their AA franchise when the Stars visit West Tennessee, 6:35 PM

HIGH DESERT: It?s RHP Dan Kolb vs. Lake Elsinore (Padres) at home, 9:05 PM

BELOIT: Southpaws go back to back when 21-year-old Jeff Housman and 20-year-old Manny Parra face South Bend (Diamondabcks) in a doubleheader at home, beginning at 5:30 PM. I know FanFest is this weekend, but why wait? Where are the first-hand Snapper reports from the local Brewerfan faithful?!?
