Link Report for Games of Thursday, May 15th

Final: Pawtucket (Red Sox) 6, Indianapolis 5

From MassBrew - I'm punishing myself with Brewer-related audio today; Indy's offense has completely stagnated after some early gifts from the PawSox; a critical Joe Lawrence error at 2B in the 8th cost the Tribe the lead; the PawSox announcers described Cecil Cooper as "walking death" when he slowly trekked to the mound following the Lawrence error; LHP Nate Teut pitched well after Jayson Durocher's scoreless opening inning; the PawSox were forced to go with a "bullpen game" when Ryan Rupe injured his groin in warmups, all the more frustrating that Indy can't take advantage; Jim Rushford K's as a PH in the 8th...

EDIT: as you can now see, it's now a final; bad, bad loss, just no excuse for this one given the early inning circumstances - MB...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians were unable to keep the momentum from the past two games Thursday night, as the bullpen faltered in a 6-5 defeat to the Pawtucket Red Sox. Lou Collier added to his International League leading RBI total by driving home Andy Abad in the top of the eighth off of Roberto Giron for the winning run as the PawSox (21-16) overcame a five-run deficit.

The Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Pete Zoccolillo doubled in the first two Indians runs in the first inning off of reliever Ryan Cameron. In the second inning, Zoccolillo was again credited with an RBI when he was hit on the foot by a Cameron pitch with the bases loaded.

Jayson Durocher made his second rehabilitation start for Indianapolis throwing 13 pitches, 10 strikes, allowing only one hit in one inning of work. Nate Teut relieved Durocher to start the second inning and lasted 5.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five.

From that point, it was all PawSox, as a trio of Tribe relievers surrendered four runs on four hits over the final three innings. Mike Buddie started the seventh inning by allowing back-to-back doubles to Collier and Cesar Crespo, then retired Earl Snyder before being relieved by Shane Nance with one out and Crespo at third base. Angel Santos, the first batter to face Nance, drove in Crespo to tighten the score to 5-4 on a groundout to shortstop before Nance retired Bill Haselman to end the inning.

Nance (0-3) took to the mound to start the eighth inning and issued a one out walk to Anton French, who promptly stole second base for his fourth steal of the game, a Victory Field single-game record. With French on second and only one out, Andy Abad hit a groundball to second baseman Joe Lawrence, but Lawrence's throw was wide of first baseman Keith Luuloa allowing Abad to move into second base and French to score the tying run. Giron then came on in relief of Nance and retired Julio Zuleta before allowing the single to Collier that plated Abad with the winning run.

The Indians (15-24) and PawSox complete the four-game series Friday night as the Tribe's eight-game homestand also comes to a close. Bronson Arroyo (4-1, 3.57) will face the Tribe's Francisco Campos (2-4, 5.72) at 7 p.m.

High Desert 11, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 6

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Late Rally Helps Mavs Wrap Up a Great Homestand!

ADELANTO, CA ? For the second time in three nights, the High Desert Mavericks used a late-inning rally to beat the Lake Elsinore Storm. Five in the seventh, and three more in the eighth put the Mavs comfortably in front, as they beat the Storm by a final score of 11-6 on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Mark Ernster became the first Maverick to homer in the last ten games, doing it twice in as many at-bats, to help the Mavs pull to within five games of the first place Storm. Ernster?s two-run shot in the fifth put the Mavs in front at 3-1. His three-run blast in the seventh tied the game at 6-6. Ernster?s home runs were his first two of the year.

With the game tied at 6-6, Jason Belcher, Dan Boyd and Scott Candelaria all had consecutive doubles as the Mavs took an 8-6 lead. They added three more in the eighth off Storm reliever Geoff Jones, as Belcher and Candelaria each had run-scoring hits. Both finished the evening with four hits.

Justin Backsmeyer, who came on after Danny Kolb went seven innings, worked two scoreless frames, for his first save as a Maverick. He struck out four, while allowing just two hits in relief. Kolb (2-2), pitched well in earning his second win in as many starts, despite allowing six runs in seven innings. His first five innings were great, allowing just a solo home run to Josh Barfield, his fifth. He then allowed a three-run home run to Greg Sain, his eighth of the year, as the Storm took a 5-3 lead in the sixth.

Storm starter Mike Thompson was chased in the fifth, after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. Rob Ramsey, a former big-leaguer who had brain surgery in 2002, made his Storm debut and worked a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief. Robert Garvin (3-4) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs in just .1 innings.

The Mavs went 5-2 on the homestand, as they are now just four games under .500 at 18-22. The Mavs will be in Rancho Cucamonga on Friday for a double-header against the Quakes. Jeff Robinson (0-0) goes in game one, while Justin Gordon (1-0) gets the call in the second game. Game one will begin at 6:15 (8:15 PM Central) on Friday night at the Epicenter.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Nice detailed account as usual...

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=65

David Weiser's Huntsville Report:

ROLL OVER ROHLICEK

The signs look so good........ The Stars have the league lead in ERA, and even though they're on the bottom among batting leaders, their clutch hitting has won a lot of games........ They're off to their best start since 1998, when they were 23-15 after 38 games...... But it's only mid-May. It's not in the bag....... It's only a 3 game lead, and the Birmingham Barons are starting to play some serious baseball. They won Thursday night over Eastern Division leader Carolina, 5-2, putting them 2 games over .500....... Before the 1st half ends, we still have two series to play against the Barons and two more against the Diamond Jaxx.

Anyone can look at the most obvious stats and point them out as the reason the Stars are playing like winners, but it's showing subtly in a couple of ways I had overlooked........ One is efficiency. The Stars, who are not hitting as well as the rest of the league, are using what hits they muster to get runners in scoring position and across the plate. They lead the league in stolen bases. That helps. Also, you can look at the difference between the runs and hits they score every game. In most cases, the difference has been less than five. 24 times in 38 games, in fact........ While using more patience at the plate and making the best use of the speed they have, they've used what hits they've gotten to score runs...... In those 24 games where the difference between runs scored per game and hits is less than five, they've won 18 games....... Left on base totals are usually trash stats, not even worthy of record keeping, but they show, if anything, they've wasted fewer opportunities than their opponents. The Stars have left 249 runners on base, an average of 6.5/game, while their opponents have left 297 ---- a gaping difference of nearly 8 per game.

The Stars have also been able to win on the road. They are now 11-4 after tonight, another telling sign of a good ballclub, and they did it in their first visit this year to Pringles Park and their first meeting with the Diamond Jaxx of tornado-ravaged Jackson, Tennessee........ The tornado ripped right through downtown, but there was little damage to the Big Chip, located near Interstate 40....... After scoring just 4 runs in 4 games against the strong pitching of the Tennessee Smokies, the Stars held nothing back from the start.......

The Stars were able to get their first six hitters on base in the 1st inning, starting with a double by Ryan Knox off the 20-ft. wall in left field....... Dave Krynzel was hit by a pitch and J.J. Hardy singled to load the bases........ Corey Hart broke out of a slump and singled in Knox for the first run........ Brandon Gemoll. Every time I hear or read about this guy, it's with an extra-base hit in the same sentence. He doubles down the right field line, scoring Krynzel and Hardy to make it 3-0........ Daryl Clark becomes the 2nd hitter in the inning to get hit with a pitch --- right off the helmet and the bases are loaded again........ Richard Paz couldn't keep the party going, but his double-play grounder did at least score Hart to make it 4-0, forcing Gemoll to third........ Mike Kremblas followed with a single that scored Gemoll and Mike Jones, off to a 5-1 start now, had all he would need, with some help, to get the win.

Jonesy's streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings came to a quick end, though, as Jason Dubois' sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the 1st scored Ray Sadler........ The Stars sealed the game in the 6th. With two out and a 6-3 lead, Gemoll doubled in Hardy to make it 8-3........ Kremblas hit a laser beam inside the 310 foul pole in left for his 2nd homer of the year to make it 9-3......... Matt Childers pitched four good innings and lowered his ERA to 1.84 in earning his 2nd save.

Hardy, who's spent two weeks out of action studying the pitchers, is off to a hot start again. He's 4-for-6 in his two starts since his injury and had his first multi-hit game since April 25....... Hart commited only his 3rd error in 19 games. He had 7 in his first 18........ The Stars were put down in order only once -- in the 7th inning....... Going into this game, the Stars had 5 pitchers among the top 10 ERA leaders in the league -- Luis Martinez (1.13), who is 2nd, and Ben Diggins (2.36), Derek Lee (2.40), Mike Jones (2.43), and Pedro Liriano (2.49). Jonesy's ERA dropped to 2.76 after this game.

They're creepy and they're kooky........ It's the Adams family......... Left-hander Brian Adams was outrighted by the Boston Red Sox as the player-to-be-named-later in the trade that sent former Mobile Bay Bear pitcher Mike Nicolas from the Padres to the Stars and then to the Red Sox the same day.......... Adams was assigned to Huntsville to complete the deal....... An 8th round draft choice in 1999, he had a 3.23 ERA in 83 professional games prior to this season. He doesn't appear to be a fireballer, but he did allow only 6 HRs in 208 2/3 innings........ With Brian Adams and Corey Hart on the team, who's next? Please, not Michael Jackson!

The league's ERA leader, Danny Haren, was promoted by the Cardinals to Memphis. Good luck, Danny! Don't come back!.

During the Stars' off-day, Cristian Guerrero was put on waivers, clamied by the Seattle Marinters, and assigned to the Inland Empire 66ers of the California League. This came four days after Guerrero had been sent down by Huntsville to High Desert. Only a day before Guerrero was picked up by the Mariners, he had sparked a 4-run, 8th inning rally for High Desert with a leadoff triple to help beat Lake Elsinore, 6-3......... While we're at High Desert, former Star Mark Ernster hit a pair of HRs tonight as the Mavs beat Lake Elsinore, 11-6. Ernster, who hit .244 for the Stars in 2000, is hitting .342 for the Mavs this season........ Daryl Clark is 1-for-11 for the Stars since being promoted from High Desert. Give him some time. When he left the California League, he was leading in HRs and was 3rd in batting.

Jim Rushford, hitting .190 at Class AAA - Oklahoma (PCL), was recently released by the Texas Rangers organization and signed to a minor league contract by the Milwaukee Brewers. He was assigned to Indianapolis........ The Indians released infielder Scott Seabol to make room for him on the roster........ Rushford hit .342 for the Stars in 57 games after a promotion from High Desert in 2001.

Ben Diggins was officially placed on the disabled list by the Stars and will miss a couple of starts at least, with arm fatigue...... Derek Lee (4-1, 2.40) will be placed back in the rotation, where he so often has capably fared.

Oh man...back from Beloit and what a night. I had to double check the boxscore this morning in case I missed it. That's right folks...NO EXTRA BASEHITS in 2 games. I have a theory that the Snappers offense was tied to the eclipse somehow ...bottom 11...man on 1st...2 out...Callix Crabbe at bat....Fielder on deck...looks at strike three as the eclipse is nearly full.

I guess I'll go with Larry King style comments for the rest.

-Housman and Parra looked great. Both have a heck of a curve...Parra working 90-92 all night. Housman painting the corners.

-Beloit nearly won the first game. The HR by Luellwitz...top 7...2 out...line shot to left....Nic Carter makes a heck of a leap in left....just over his glove. Tie game. Next homer by Teilon an absolute blast. Wind blowing to left may have aided Luellwitz.

-Tom Wilhelmsen becomes first player to go on DL from playing Air Drums. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I could see it happening...this guy is nuts in a good way.

-Manny Parra nice guy of the night....gives his jacket to a lovely, lady on a chilly May night Mid to Low 40's.

-Speaking of lovely ladies...oh to be 19, full of talent and surrounded by groupies. *sigh*

-Nic Carter...how did he get drafted in round 4? Only things missing with his swing are a tee , a fairway and a green to aim for. I wonder why he's batting .130!! He actually fell down face first once after grounding out.

-I think the 50/50 is rigged...has to be...no other way to explain me never winning it. :P

-Fielder looked too anxious at the plate. Like he was trying to do it all himself. He'd hit a monster foul....then ground out to 2nd. There has to be someone to protect him in Beloit....right? right???

-Fielder made 4 VERY NICE plays at first. Two didn't count as they were choppers he was trying to keep fair. Eventually made a play that was fair for an easy out. Also made a great stab on a hot shot grounder down the line to save extra bases and an easy out.

-Vandenberg sighting....John's dad and brother in attendance.

-Another parent in attendance but I was unable to make out which one he was affiliated with...I thought I overheard something about Arizona....so that would narrow it down to Wilhelmsen, Hinton, and Sarfate.

-Bad night for South Bend SS Gil....CS once, 2 errors in game one..bad throw to first...bobbled chance...misplayed a bloop to short (he went to second thinking the pitcher had it).

-South Bend had more errors (3) than hits (2) before Luellwitz's shot in the 7th.

-Breslow really brought it...deserved better as well....double in the 11th cost him.

-Attendance is piss poor folks...get out to Beloit...it's a heck of a good time even when cold.

Even though we lost 2 I had a great time. Saw some great pitching. I thought Housman and Doyle (SB) looked very similar and taking away that homerun and they would have been. See you all at fanfest. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

He goes into a game with a .204/.339/.316 line - then goes 1-for-3 with two walks, and scores two runs.

Yes, the average stinks. But he has some pop (5 doubles and 2 homers in 98 ABs), and he is walking so much, one has to wonder if it might not be time to DFA Osik, have Lawrence take over the #8 slot in the lineup, and move Royce Clayton up to the #7 slot.

Edit: Corrected typo.

Given that someone named "John Wilhelmsen" signed up for a fanfest ticket, i'd have to believe it was Tom Wilhelmesen's pop.

I was thinking that when I saw that Brian...but there wasn't any interaction as Tom was clocking pitch speeds and the parent was in another section. I would have thought the dad would be sitting with the boy. So I was leaning towards Sarfate (after looking at his BF.net profile pic) as he was interacting a little bit with the dad and girl (Manny Parra jacket).

Joe Lawrence goes into a game with a .204/.339/.316 line - then goes 1-for-3 with two walks, and scores two runs.

Joe Lawrence walks = 22

Joe Lawrence base hits = 21

Let the race begin...

The issue is the batting average. Will a high rate of walks continue as pitchers realize that his batting average is close to Blanco territory?

As a utility player, he'd be a superb addition - a defensive replacement at any number of positions, and he seems to have some okay speed, particularly for a catcher.

But "Whoa!" Joe Lawrence could be a big help right now. Drop Osik, and get him in Milwaukee ASAP.

I'm now a huge Joe Lawrence fan. He can play all eight positions, and walks that much? I'd hand him a spot as my 25th man at the beginning of the Spring.

Harold already touched on this, but at the Major League level, if he continued to hit .204, no pitcher would ever throw him a ball again. And then his OBP would be equal to his BA.

You have hit a major point. At least with Sanchez, there is a good chance of a hit, and so pitchers have to exercise more care with him than with Lawrence.

Still, with Lawrence's plate discipline (walks exceeding his strikeouts), I think the average could be on its way up by June or July, because Lawrence is flashing some decent gap power as well (seven of his 22 hits are for extra bases).
