Link Report for Friday, May 16th - Hendrickson Hurting Again

Indianapolis Media Notes for Friday:

A bit repetitive, yes, although I do cut if a note hasn't changed from one previously posted...

TONIGHT: The Indians wrap-up their first eight-game homestand of the season. The Tribe needs a win tonight to finish the stand with a .500 mark. The Indians dropped three of four to Buffalo, but have won two of three against Pawtucket.

The Indians have scored five or more runs in nine of the last 10 games going 5-5 in that span. The Indians have scored 65 runs (6.5 rpg) and are hitting .296 (102-for-345) in those games. The Tribe opposition has scored 53 runs and is hitting .271 (98-for-362) over the last 10 games.

The Tribe's team batting average has risen to .242 and no longer ranks last in the IL. This marks the first time since the first week of the season that the Indians have not had the lowest average in the league.

YESTERDAY: Pawtucket overcame a 5-0 deficit and rallied for a 6-5 win. Anton French set a Victory Field record with four stolen bases in the game. Tribe DH Pete Zoccolillo drove in three of the five runs. Nate Teut worked five strong innings on the mound.

DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher has made two starts working one inning each time. He's thrown 22 pitches - 17 of them for strikes. His next outing is scheduled for Saturday at Buffalo.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Francisco Campos makes his team-leading ninth start. From April 26-May 6, Campos turned in three strong outings in a row going 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA. He struggled his last time out though lasting just 3.2 innings against Buffalo Sunday. He was tagged for six runs (two earned) and six hits. Earlier this week Campos was outrighted off the Milwaukee 40-man roster.

SMITH STILL STREAKING: Mark Smith's 14-game hitting streak was snapped Tuesday with an 0-for-3 performance, but he still has a streak alive. Smith has reached base safely in 17 straight games dating back to April 26. That's the eighth-longest such streak in the IL this season. Smith's hitting streak is the fourth-longest in the IL this season. Smith leads the Indians with a .319 average, 18 RBI and 10 multi-hit games. He was the Indians Player of the Month for April.

HOT AT THE PLATE: The Indians are hitting .283 in May and have scored 82 runs (5.5 rpg). Bill Hall leads the team with a .393 average, 13 runs, 22 hits and 10 RBI. Keith Luuloa is hitting .341 with a team-high .683 slugging percentage. Jason Conti (.321) also has 13 runs scored and has three homers. The Indians May average is the third-best in the league.

TAKING A FREE PASS: Joe Lawrence leads the Indians and is tied for fourth in the IL with 22 bases on balls. Lawrence has a .350 OB%.

ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 27 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 14 games this season, but is just 6-8 in those games. The ninth inning is the only inning in which the Indians have not scored in double figures (6). The Indians have scored just 28 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

LONG BALL PROBLEMS: The Indians have hit 22 home runs which ranks 12th in the IL while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-high 39 long balls. The Tribe has been outhomered 15-11 at Victory Field. Pawtucket boasts opposite totals. The Paw Sox offense is second in the league lead with 38 round trippers while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-low 14.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Saturday at Buffalo - RHP David Manning (2-0, 2.03) vs. RHP Jason Bere (0-0, 1.13)

Sunday at Buffalo - RHP Dave Burba (2-3, 2.91) vs. LHP Brian Tallet (3-4, 4.50)

Monday at Buffalo - RHP Pasqual Coco (3-4, 5.26) vs. RHP Jason Phillips (6-0, 2.70)

Tuesday at Buffalo - LHP Nate Teut (1-1, 3.86) vs. RHP Jamie Brown (3-1, 1.95)

LHP Travis Miller made the spot start for Indy tonight in what will be a bullpen game; it appears that Francicso Campos will be heading back to the Mexican League -- Doug Melvin mentioned that Campos can make much more money pitching there...

RHP Robert Marquez is now in, third inning -- he just gave up a grand slam, it's Pawtucket 4-3 as of now...

In the fifth, Hart is credited with a hit, even tho the ball struck Krynzel as he was running between second and third. In the buttom of the inning, the Diamond Jaxx appearantly scored the tying run, except the runner missed third base and was called out.

Thanks for the update, Chris.

West Tenn (Cubs) 3, Huntsville 2

This Link Reporter's always had a soft spot for RHP's Matt Parker and Ryan Miller; Parker had his stellar 13-6, 4.30 ERA 2001 season in 28 High Desert starts; Miller's been solid with good secondary numbers in his three years + in the system; solid middle relief work again from them here -- they'd be in most AA rotations with other organizations...

In case there is any confusion, if a runner is hit by a batted ball, the hitter automatically gets a single, by rule.

Pawtucket (Red Sox) 6, Indianapolis 5

Shane Nance is already 0-4 at Indy, in what, less than two weeks? The PawSox tried to give the game away for the second night in a row -- tonight they made six errors yet managed to eke another one out -- ugh...

More details soon...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Julio Zuleta belted a grand slam home run and a game-winning single in the ninth inning as the Pawtucket Red Sox overcame six errors and a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 6-5 Friday night at Victory Field.

The Tribe (15-25) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off PawSox starter Bronson Arroyo, two of those runs coming courtesy of Pete Zoccolillo's single to right field scoring Jason Conti and Mark Smith. It was the second straight night the Indians took the lead with runs in the first, but failed to win the game.

Pawtucket (22-16) struck back in a big way in the top of the fourth inning when the team loaded the bases against Indians starter Travis Miller. Reliever Rob Marquez was brought on to face Zuleta with two outs, and on a 1-2 pitch Zuleta blasted Marquez's offering over the left field wall for a grand slam to give the PawSox a 4-3 advantage. Zuleta's ninth homer of the season put him in a tie for the International League lead.

Pawtucket added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning when Andy Abad homered off Jason Childers with one out and none on to extend the lead to 5-3.

The Tribe tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Smith tripled off the top of the left field wall driving in Mark Budzinski and Bill Hall.

After both teams were held scoreless in the eighth inning, Shane Nance was brought in to face the PawSox in the top of the ninth. Nance (0-4) allowed a leadoff single to Adrian Brown who went to third on two ground outs. Zuleta delivered a sharp single to left driving in Brown with the winning run. For Zuleta, it was his fifth RBI of the night.

Rudy Seanez pitched around a two-out error in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the season. Kevin Tolar (2-0), who pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief following Smith's triple earned the victory.

The Indians travel to Buffalo on Saturday to kickoff an eight-game, nine-day road trip. David Manning (2-0, 2.03) will take the mound against Buffalo's Jason Bere (0-0, 1.13) Saturday at 6:05 pm.

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

SING HITS SOUR NOTE

Everything looked like the Stars had Instant Karma tonight, but Brandon Sing had them singing the blues instead....... When it looked like the Stars' 2-1 lead was about to be erased in the 5th inning by a single to left, the Stars won an appeal call that erased the tying run. Jon Hamilton had missed the bag turning the corner at third and eagle-eyed manager Frank Kremblas called it to the attention of home plate umpire John Woods. He won the appeal and Diamond Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson, furious at the call, got the boot......

In the 8th, pesky Ray Sadler (5-for-7 vs. the Stars) hit a leadoff double --- then was picked off on a throw from Kade Johnson....... Even though Ryan Miller walked the next hitter, Jon Hamilton, he was erased when Brendan Harris lined to Richard Paz for a double play........

But just like Yogi says, it's not over till it's over. With two out in the 9th, Mike Adams' 1-1 pitch to Brandon Sing was plastered to left and with the wind blowing out, it sailed over the fence for a game-winning two-run HR....... With that sudden turn of events, the Stars lost their 4th game of their last 6, but still hold on to their 3-game lead over Birmingham......... It was also the first time the Stars have lost on a Friday this season. They are now 5-1. It was the last day of the week that the Stars have managed to stay undefeated.

The Stars hadn't lost on a 9th inning homer this year, but they had lost a pair of extra-inning games on a last at-bat HR. One of those games was the 15-inning, 4-3 loss to Orlando. It was Adams who gave up that blow to Jonny Gomes on April 14 at the Mouse House........ Adams has now blown 4 saves in his 8 opportunities and given up 5 HRs in 23 IP. He's averaged one in every 8 innings in his career, so this year alone, he's almost doubled that rate....... He's had a disappointing start after being promoted three times last year.

Batting coach Sandy Guerrero said after the game, "They'll bounce back.... They'll put up a seven-spot tomorrow......" If they do, it will break a slump. The Stars have hit just .202 in their last six games. Ryan Knox has been holding up the offense during the soft spell (7-for-21 w/3 BBs) and has hit 5 doubles this month....... J.J. Hardy is 4-for-6 between mandated rests, but everyone else is looking sick....... It goes down after Corey Hart's .238 (5-for-21, 2 RBIs)...... Dave Krynzel is 4-for-20, Paz is 4-for-21 (.190), Chris Barnwell is 2-for-14, and Brandon Gemoll is 3-for-22. However, he has driven in 4 runs in his last 6 games........ The newly-acquired tandem of Daryl Clark and Kade Johnson are a combined 2-for-25 with 0 RBIs....... Hart has 10 Ks in 49 ABs this month and has walked only once.

Matt Parker has done a fine job in long relief this month, throwing 12 innings without giving up an earned run. He gave up his first run tonight on Hart's throw that sailed over the head of Gemoll, allowing Ray Sadler, who doubled, to score in the 3rd inning....... Barnwell made a great defensive effort in the 2nd when Jason Dubois hit a grounder in the hole on the left side. Barney slid in the grass to make the stop, got up and threw to first and nearly got Dubois, who got the infield single.

Jim Rushford returned to the Indianapolis lineup Friday night against Pawtucket, but went 0-for-3.........The Indians released infielder Scott Seabol, who thought he would get more playing time with the retirement of Lee Stevens, but Indy had to make room for Rushford........ Rushford hit .342 for the Stars in 57 games after a promotion from High Desert in 2001.

Game One: High Desert 2, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 1

Game Two: Rancho Cucamonga 18, High Desert 4

High Desert Site Doubleheader Summary:

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks split a doubleheader in Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night, winning game one by a final score of 2-1, but dropping the nightcap by a score of 18-4.

Game one was a well-pitched duel, as Jeff Robinson, Kenny Ray (1-1) and Bobby Bystrowski combined to hold the Quakes to just one run on five hits.

Mark Ernster's RBI single in the fifth inning snapped a 1-1 tie, as he knocked in Chris Morris for the game-winning run.

Ray came out of the Mavs bullpen and held the Quakes scoreless in the fifth and sixth, before turning it over to Bystrowski. The Quakes went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, as Bystrowski earned his 10th save, which ties him for the California League lead.

Robinson started the game, and went four strong innings before giving way to a 75 pitch maximum.

Rancho's Ervin Santana (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year, despite pitching a complete game.

In the second game, the Mavs took an early lead, but saw the Quakes score 18 unanswered runs to win game two. The Mavs got two runs off Rancho starter Phil Wilson (1-0) in the second inning, as Johnny Raburn's ground ball couldn't be turned into a double play. Instead, Tommy Murphy's throw to first went past the first baseman and two runs scored.

The Quakes would get to starter Justin Gordon (1-1) in the third, tying the game at 2-2. A leadoff home run for Dallas McPherson in the fourth gave the Quakes their first lead of the game at 3-2. With two outs, Raburn lost a pop fly in the lights, which could have ended the inning. Instead the Quakes got a total of four runs in the fourth and led 6-2.

Rancho jumped on Mavs reliever Tony Stavros for seven runs in the fifth before infielder Scott Candelaria had to come in and mop up. Candelaria allowed five more runs in the sixth, as Rancho poured it on and took no mercy.

The Mavs rounded out the scoring as Todd West picked up a two-run double in the seventh.

Both teams came out of the dugouts before the start of the top half of the seventh inning after tempers flared. Nothing major followed, but Quakes first baseman Mike Eylward was ejected when order was restored.

The Mavs send Chris Saenz (3-3) to the hill on Saturday night, as he faces lefty Dan Mozingo at 7:15 (9:15 Central).

Here's to a great Brewerfan FanFest weekend!

Daily Menu for Saturday:

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio is approx. 15 minutes prior to game times listed; no audio available for Beloit today...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP David Manning has been outstanding all season, he'll pitch in Buffalo (Cleveland) against a former Brewer, rehabbing Jason Bere, at 6:05 PM

HUNTSVILLE: The series at West Tenn (Cubs) continues, with LHP Luis Martinez taking the mound at 6:35 PM

HIGH DESERT: RHP Chris Saenz at Rancho Cucamonga (Angels), 9:15 PM

BELOIT: The Snappers host Lansing (Cubs) at 6:30 PM; we think it'll be RHP Tom Wilhelmsen facing the Lugnuts, meaning the FanFest crew will get a look at RHP Dennis Sarfate on Sunday...

For all their early struggles, Indy and High Desert are still within striking distance in their respective divisions, which are both very balanced (or weak, take your pick)...

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Mavs split double-dip

By MICHAEL ROTHSTEIN/Staff Writer

RANCHO CUCAMONGA ? When California League bigwigs pieced the 140-game 2003 schedule together, the Mavericks had 138 one-game days and one scheduled doubleheader ? on June 14.

But weather plays a factor in baseball and when Rancho Cucamonga and High Desert rained out on Apr. 14, it set up a second doubleheader for the Mavericks which they played Friday.

High Desert split the doubleheader, winning Game 1, 2-1, and dropping the nightcap, 18-4.

Two games in one day are much different propositions than your typical ball game. Instead of nine innings, the teams play at least 14, being divided into two seven inning games.

More pitching strategy could be used and the health of players may be taken into deeper consideration. But if a pitcher is especially effective, any strategy and bullpen use would be nonexistent.

For players, it also brings back memories to their high school and traveling club days.

"You've been playing in (doubleheaders) since you were a little kid anyway," Mavericks relief pitcher David Nolasco said. "You'd play in tournaments where you'd play three times on a Saturday and twice on Sunday. It's a long way from there now, I feel like an old man now.

"It's a different way to play the game but you approach it the same way."

High Desert used two spot starters Friday, sending Jeff Robinson in Game 1 and Justin Gordon in the nightcap.

Ken Ray pitched two innings in relief during Game 1 to pick up his first Maverick victory. Bobby Bystrowski added his now-California League leading 10th save with a perfect seventh.

The Mavericks scored their runs on a Todd West sacrifice fly in the second and a Mark Ernster single that drove in Chris Morris in the fifth.

"You kind of have to look at it a little bit different because it's two sevens instead of a nine," infielder Johnny Raburn said of doubleheaders. "You have to look at things earlier in the game for later decisions.

"But you prepare yourself the same way."

The second game saw more action, as the Quakes used a seven-run fifth inning to pull away from High Desert, 13-2. With the Mavericks being blown out, manager Tim Blackwell allowed position player Scott Candelaria to pitch a few innings and save the bullpen. It was Candelaria's sixth career appearance ? third with High Desert and first this season.

In between the sixth and seventh innings, both benches cleared for the second time in three games between the two teams. For the second time, barbs were exchanged but no punches thrown. Quakes first baseman Mike Eylward was ejected.

Rancho Cucamonga manager Bobby Meacham was ejected in the first inning for arguing a foul ball call down the third-base line on the Quakes' first batter. Meacham became irate with plate umpire Chris Griffith and argued for almost five minutes before leaving the field.

"I don't like doubleheaders because they are seven innings," Meacham said before the game. "I don't mind playing two games. I just don't like doubleheaders because they are short. It seems that a lot of games between teams in this league are won and lost in the last two innings."
