Link Report for Sun., May 18th - Hardy tweaks back/hip again

Lansing (Cubs) 1 - Beloit 0

I had the distinct pleasure of attending this game with several other brewerfan.net users, and it turned out to be quite a pitching performance by Dennis Sarfate. Unfortunately, a solo shot was given up and the Snappers lost 1-0 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Buffalo (Cleveland) 4, Indianapolis 0

Indy Site Game Summary:

BUFFALO, NY -- The International League's top pitching staff baffled the Indianapolis Indians for a second straight day Sunday as the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Tribe 4-0. The Indians (15-27) were shutout on three hits for the second consecutive game as they dropped their fourth straight overall.

Brian Tallet (4-1) dropped the Indians to 2-11 against lefthanders as he worked seven scoreless frames. Tallet allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six. The Indians put four baserunners into scoring position, but saw their scoreless innings streak extended to 20 as all were stranded.

Joe Lawrence doubled in the first. In the second, Jim Rushford and Wilton Veras reached first and second with two outs, but couldn't score. Mark Smith doubled in the fourth, and was the only Indian to reach third base as Tallet uncorked a wild pitch. Jason Conti got to second base on a walk and another wild pitch in the sixth.

Conti was the last Indian to reach base against Tallet who retired 11 of the last 12 men he faced from the fourth through the seventh.

Relievers Alex Herrera and Dan Micelli set down all six men they faced to close out the win for the Bisons (27-13) who boast the league's best record. The shutout lowered Buffalo's team ERA to 3.22.

Coco Crisp and Greg LaRocca did the damage offensively for Buffalo. Crisp went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. He led off the bottom of the first with a double off former teammate Dave Burba (2-4). After going to third on a ground out, Crisp came home with the game's first run when LaRocca lined a single to center.

The duo combined for the Bisons' second run in the fifth. Crisp led off with a single and scored on LaRocca's double off the wall in left field. LaRocca scored to make it 3-0 when Travis Haffner singled to right.

The Indians were shutout in consecutive games for the first time since July 14 and 15 of last season. The Indians last run came in the seventh inning Friday night against Pawtucket.

Smith, the Tribe's top hitter, has reached base safely in 20 straight games.

Game three of the series with the Bisons is Monday morning at 9:35 a.m.

For those of you keeping score at home, that's three Milwaukee Brewer affiliates thus far, and a total of zero runs scored...

Let's face it -- this Huntsville offense has simply not produced like it should have thus far this season -- not even close...

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 7, High Desert 1

Well, at least the Mavs scored -- looks like it was unearned, though...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks were held to just an unearned run on only six hits on Sunday afternoon, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes beat the Mavs at the Epicenter by a score of 7-1.

Quakes starter Steven Shell (4-2) was tough, holding the Mavs to just one unearned run on only four hits in his seven innings. The Quakes bullpen, which was awful on Saturday night, kept the Mavs off the board and out of the game, allowing just two ninth inning singles.

The Quakes scored first as Justin Turner's solo home run in the second put them up 1-0. Mavs starter Dan Hall gave up another home run in the third, a solo shot to Jason Aspito for a 2-0 Quakes advantage.

The Mavs got their only run of the day in the fourth. Chris Morris led off the inning with a single. He scored from second when Jason Belcher reached on a throwing error by the second baseman, Justin Turner.

The Quakes got that run back in the bottom of the inning, as Turner doubled and scored for a 3-1 lead. The Quakes chased Hall (4-3) in the fifth, as the first four Quakes reached safely.

David Nolasco came on with no outs, and allowed two inherited runners to score, but did work a total of three scoreless innings in relief. Tony Stavros also pitched a scoreless frame of relief in the eighth.

Scott Candelaria finished the day with three hits to lead the offense.

The loss leaves the Mavs four games under .500 at 20-24 but still just four games back of first place Lancaster and Lake Elsinore, who are both tied atop the South Division.

The Mavs play the Quakes for the fifth time in four nights at the Epicenter on Monday night. Brian Mazone (0-3) looks for his first Maverick win, as he faces southpaw Jake Woods (2-3) at 7:15 (9:15 Central).

The Mavs return home on Tuesday to battle the Quakes for three more games, followed by three more against the Lancaster JetHawks, all at Mavericks Stadium.

So as a whole, poorest day of the minor league season...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

LIKE A SNOWBALL DOWN A MOUNTAIN

Things have been going south for the Stars for the first time this season, and nothing typified it more than Sunday's game. Nothing went right and everything seems to be going wrong at the wrong time. The Stars are playing more games now within their own division until the first half ends.

They hit the ball hard today --- but too many times into somebody's glove........ There were nine line outs, if you include one play that above all, represented the Stars' afternoon....... In the 5th inning, the Stars had two out with D.J. Clark on first and Ryan Gripp on second. Mike Kremblas hit a liner to shortstop Josh Arteaga. Arteaga dropped the ball, but still had plenty of time to throw Kremblas out and it was the safest option since the runners were going on the pitch...... Instead, Arteaga threw to second. Gripp slid in safe, but the umpire called Gripp "out". Members of the Diamond Jaxx media in the press box even agreed that Gripp was clearly safe. A run would have crossed and the inning would have still been alive........

That pretty much was the low point of the day, but in addition to everything that went wrong, Corey Hart was ejected in the first inning before he even took the field on a bang-bang play at first. All Hart did was merely throw his hands in the air and very little was said if anything to umpire John Woods, who has the quickest thumb in the SL, (He's thrown West Tenn manager Bobby Dickerson out 8 times in two seasons!)........ Gripp was moved from first to third, and Brandon Gemoll, who got a rest because he was hitting .154 in his last 7 games, had to come off the bench........ Then J.J. Hardy, just recovering from a strained hip flexor, injured his back near his hip flexor muscle, trying to stretch......... He took himself out of the game and Chris Barnwell was moved from second to short. Richard Paz had to come off the bench. And we're not even halfway through the game at this point......... There were missed opportunites and mental mistakes the Stars had avoided all season everywhere. The Stars left runners on base in 5 of the first 6 innings, each time in scoring position.

The Stars have now lost three straight for the first time this season and 6 of their last 8........ About the only player who has actually been hot the last 8 games has been David Krynzel, who had a triple to left (his league-leading 5th of the year) and a single to right. He's hit .310 during this slump, .333 in May, and was 7-for-16 (.438) in the series.

Who's to blame? Don't blame the pitchers The staff has never given up more than five runs a game and the team has lost mostly by a run or two. A 5-1 loss to the Smokies on the May 12 was the only "blowout" loss........ While the rotation has logged a 2.20 ERA and the bullpen's a 2.01, the bats have been cold, hitting .213 in their last eight games, but the staff is going through the loss now of Ben Diggins, who is on the DL with what has only been described as "a tired arm", Ben Hendrickson, who is flying to Arizona on Monday to start a rehab program, and Matt Hammons, who has a shoulder problem. So essentially, the Stars are using a four-man rotation of Derek Lee, Mike Jones, Luis Martinez, and Pedro Liriano. Matt Parker is being pressed into service, and will start Wednesday. Expect no more than five innings from Matt, whose last start was July 17 of last year.

As it has since the season started, errors have been a problem. 12 in the last 8 games...... Hart made three throwing errors in three straight games, and of the 24 runs given up in that stretch, 7 have been unearned......... But with the exception of Krinkles, it's been mostly the cold bats. Aside from a 10-4 win on Thursday, the Stars have scored 10 runs in 7 games....... There's a new table on the Standings link to illustrate the pain of 10 of the most frequently used players recently........

Link:

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

Apparently, Huntsville wasn't the only team needing a shot of adrenaline. Only one run was scored Sunday by the whole farm system.

The Stars now go to Greenville....... The G'Braves have had problems of their own. They have lost 8 of their last 10, but they broke out and had an 8-run inning en route to destroying Jacksonville, 11-1, Sunday........ Derek Lee (4-1, 2.40) will start Monday.

We're going to file away our very detailed weekly look at league leaders for a bit. It becomes less of an accurate reflection of the organization, what with Daryl Clark and Kade Johnson no longer in the Cal League, J.J. Hardy missing time as of late, etc. We'll try something different each week -- this week, it's analyzing the beloved base-on-balls, both offensively and defensively...

Despite their lofty batting average, the Mavs are only 7th in a ten-team league in drawing walks; the incredibly high walk total for Modesto, should come as no surprise (Oakland), and Stockton (Texas) has the same philosophy with a front office made up of many former A's staffers. So, as the A's organization proves year in and year out, it is a philosophy that can be taught and executed...

Gee, that'd make for a decent analysis at the Journal Sentinel should they decide to pursue it -- nah....

Regardless, we know many in the Brewer organization link up with us here each day -- the news here isn't good. Managers, coaches, players -- let's do something about this -- we're watching http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif .

If there is one positive with regards to BBs it's the Beloit pitching staff. While a few guys have given up a lot of walks (Carpenter, Sarfate, Pena), Beloit pitchers have some of the best BB totals in the system.

Look at walks/9 innings

Parra 1.6

Wilhelmson 2.89

Bo Hall 2.14

Breslow 1.98

Housman 2.67

At the upper levels the only ones to stand out are Dan Hall (2.45) and Sheets (1.9http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif .

Hopefully, this is a sign that they are stressing it with the new guys and that the trend will work its way up the chain.

As for OBP and other run-productive indicators, Melvin said, "while on-base percentage works" in evaluating some players, "it doesn't work for all players." In the end, it's just a statistical column for him -- one of many things they look at.

This is from the ESPN article on Moneyball, and is a quote from the book.

indeed...obp doesnt work for:

alfonso soriano

vlad guerrero

garrett anderson

if you just looked at their obp..or more so, the difference bewteen their obp and ba, then you might not see them as excellent hitters...but looking at their total stats reveals their ability

thats what i think melvin means..not that obp isnt important, but that it is not always the most important statistic for a hitter
