Buffalo (Cleveland) 3, Indianapolis 1

Great judgment by Pascual Coco here -- gimme a break...

Indy Site Game Summary:

BUFFALO, NY -- The Indianapolis Indians got back on the scoreboard Monday, but couldn't find their way back into the win column. The Buffalo Bisons handed the Tribe their fifth straight defeat, 3-1.

The Indians (15-28), who had been shut out in the two previous games in the series, broke a 20-inning scoreless streak in the top of the first. Mark Budzinski led off the game with a single to right and went to second when the Bisons threw behind him as he took a wide turn at first. After going to third on a fly out, Budzinski scored the Indians only run when Jason Conti singled to left.

The Bisons loaded the bases but could not score against Pasqual Coco in the bottom of the first. A single, hit batsman and a walk put Coco in a jam with one out. After a visit by pitching coach Mike Caldwell, Coco got a pop up and a fly out to end the threat. Coco exchanged words with Buffalo's Coco Crisp coming off the field, however, and was ejected from the game.

Mike Buddie (0-4), the first of three relievers for the Indians, worked a 1-2-3 second, but got in trouble in the third as the Bisons (28-13) took the lead for good. The only four hits Buddie surrendered in three innings of work came in succession as Zach Sorensen doubled and Nate Grindell, Travis Hafner and Victor Martinez singled to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead.

Buffalo's final run came on an RBI single by Crisp in the sixth, plating Dusty Wathan.

Jamie Brown (4-1) held the Indians at bay after the first inning. The righthander worked a perfect second and allowed one runner in each of the third through sixth innings before exiting the game.

The Tribe's best threat came in the eight when Joe Lawrence and Conti connected on back-to-back singles with two outs. Mark Smith, who has reached base safely in 21 straight games, grounded out to end the inning.

Chad Paronto set the Indians down in the ninth after issuing a lead-off walk to earn his fifth save.

The four-game series with Buffalo concludes Tuesday night with lefthander Nate Teut (1-1, 3.86) facing lefty Jason Stanford (5-0, 2.79).

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2, High Desert 1

Farm teams now 0-8 over the last two days - MB...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA ? Brian Mazone and Jake Woods battled it out on Monday night in the final game of the five-game set at the Epicenter. The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes ended up on top, as they edged the Mavs by a score of 2-1 in a classic pitcher's dual. The Quakes and Mavs will meet for three more games, only the scene will shift to Mavericks Stadium beginning on Tuesday.

Jeff Mathis broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, with an RBI double off the wall in right field. He then scored on a single by Nick Gorneault to make it a 2-0 game.

It was all the Quakes needed, as the Mavs offense was held to just one run for a second straight game, on only six hits.

Quakes starter Jake Woods (3-3) was excellent, making just one mistake to Brian Foster, as his eighth home run of the year put the Mavs on the board in the seventh inning. The bullpen combination of Jon Rouwenhorst and Scott Schneider held the Mavs off the scoreboard in the final two innings, as each inning the Mavs threatened, but couldn't tie the game.

In the eighth, Joel Alvarado's leadoff single was stranded. In the ninth, Dan Boyd singled with one out and pinch-hitter Jason Belcher singled with two outs to put the tying run in scoring position. Schneider earned his second save of the year though, as Ozzie Chavez grounded to Tommy Murphy, who carried it to the bag at second to force out Belcher for the final out.

Mazone's best pitching performance of the year still couldn't earn him a win, as the lefty is still winless on the year. Mazone (0-4) went a season-best seven innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, while striking out six. Neither Mazone or Ken Ray, who worked a scoreless eighth, allowed a walk on the night.

The Mavs return home on Tuesday to battle the Quakes for three more games, followed by three more against the Lancaster JetHawks, all at Mavericks Stadium. Tuesday night's starter will be Danny Kolb (2-2) as he looks to make it three straight wins. Going for the Quakes will be Mike Nickoli. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

MORE MILESTONES FOR D. LEE

The Stars brought out the long sleeves on this gusty, chilly night for the first time since early in the season. Batting practice was cancelled early in the day, a common occurence because of rainy weather lately in the South. The last time the Stars had a good day for BP, they came out and beat the Diamond Jaxx, 10-4 last week......... That sounds like a contributing factor in the Stars' slump at the dish......... For the first time in 14 games, the Stars gave up 6 runs in a game as the losing streak grew to four games...... That's 6 of their last 7 now and 7 of their last 9.......

The Stars hit the ball hard again, but as it happens in all slumps, it goes right at someone. The clutch hitting that seemed so routine in April, wasn't there and it looks like some players are pressing........ In the 6th inning, with runners on second and third with one out, Brandon Gemoll grounded out, scoring Richard Paz with the tying run and moving Corey Hart to third. Hart had doubled to the alley in left-center......... But Kade Johnson, 0-for-May with the Stars, struck out to leave the lead run on third........ Johnson would single to left-center in the 9th inning with one out, ending an 0-for-17 start with his new club, but the game ended with Daryl Clark hitting into a game-ending double play.

Greenville put two runs on the scoreboard in the 1st inning on a 2-run HR by Adam LaRoche. LaRoche is hitting .250 against the Stars this year and .267 dating back to late last year when he joined the club . ...... For Derek Lee, who had a day of milestones, it was the 40th HR given up by him as a Huntsville Star. That pushed him past Stacy Hollins (Stars 1995-97) into 2nd place on the club's all-time list. Will Schock (Stars 1988-90) is the all-time leader in gopher balls with 44......... In the 6th inning, G'Braves catcher Lee Evans became the General's 400th strikeout victim since he's pitched for the Stars. That's 167 more strikeouts than any other Huntsville Stars pitcher in club history........ Derek is closing in on another milestone, needing three innings to reach 600, which would be 174 1/3 more innings than other pitcher...... Hart answered LaRoche in the 2nd by roping a 1-1 pitch to right-center for a home run, making it 2-1.

The Stars missed an opportunity for some runs in the 5th........ Kade Johnson, the leadoff hitter, was plunked by a pitch from Chris Waters. After a pickoff attempt was thrown away, Johnson reached third on Clark's grounder to first. Chris Barnwell, 6-for-22 (.273) during this 9-game dive bomb, singled up the middle to score Johnson...... Barney then went to third on an unusual sac bunt play that went from third to home to first. Wish I had seen that for myself....... With Barnwell on third, though, Ryan Knox lined out, as most rallies have ended lately, to left........

Greenville would break the 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the 6th, started by a walk to Bill McCarthy and a single to left by Ryan Langerhans. Kelly Johnson sacrificed, moving both runners into scoring position........ Derek got a big strikeout on Lee Evans. One out needed with the pitcher, William Collazo on deck, but then manager Brian Snitker called on the bench for a pinch-hitter, Jason Fitzgerald. He ripped Lee's first pitch down the line to right, driving in both runners to make it 5-3...... Fitzgerald got caught in a rundown, and was out 9-6-3-6, ending the inning, but the G'Braves' 5-3 lead broke the Stars' morale and they never had a runner in scoring position the remainder of the game.

Tuesday, it's Jones-Wainwright II........ Mike Jones beat Adam Wainwright back on April 27, 3-1, for his 3rd victory........ Jones is now 5-1 with a 2.76 ERA, just out of the top 10........ Keep your ear for 3rd baseman James Jurries, who is hitting the ball at a .518 clip over the past two weeks......... Hart is 8-for-18 on this road trip with only 3 strikeouts in 18 ABs, a home run, and 4 RBIs......... Ben Hendrickson's injury has been officially diagnosed as an elbow and forearm strain......... J.J. Hardy will be out for an indefinite period with a strained lower back muscle....... Get in line. Who's next? What's happened to a club that was so healthy a month ago?

Bucky Jacobsen hit his 10th HR of the season for the Tennessee Smokies, who lost to Birmingham, 8-7....... Former Star Gabe Alvarez sparked a 5-run 4th inning with a 3-run HR, shrinking the Stars lead in the Western Division to just a half a game.
