Link Report for Games of Tuesday, May 20th

Indianapolis Media Notes for Tuesday:

Pretty much a review of the depths that Indy has sunk to this season; most interesting news is on Durocher, the power outage, and noting that Wednesday's off-day conveniently gives the team more than another week to determine who their fifth starter is...

INDIANS ON THE ROAD: 7-18

TONIGHT: The Indians meet the Buffalo Bisons for the final time in 2003. The Indians have lost six of the first seven contests including five in a row and all three in this series. The Indians will look to avoid a four-game sweep with a win tonight. Buffalo has held the Tribe to a .144 (13-for-90) average and just one run in the three games. The Tribe has suffered one four-game sweep this season at the hands of Charlotte April 17-20.

The Indians will lose the season series for the first time since 2000 (3-5). Last year, the teams split the eight-game series including the four games at Dunn Tire Park.

The Indians are also in the midst of a five-game losing streak overall with the last win coming May 14 against Pawtucket. The Tribe's longest losing streak this season was seven games from April 13-20.

The Indians are 13 games under .500 for the first time since Aug. 13 of last season. The low-water mark last year was 14 games below .500 on Aug. 2.

YESTERDAY: The Indians got back on the scoreboard and managed seven hits against Buffalo, but lost 3-1. Joe Lawrence and Jason Conti had two hits for the Tribe. Nate Grindell, Victor Martinez and Coco Crisp drove in runs for Buffalo.

DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher is with the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher has made three appearances working one inning each time. He is scheduled pitch 1.1 innings toni

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut makes his fourth appearance and third start for the Indians since coming over from Iowa on May 2. Teut has turned in two strong efforts in a row allowing three runs in his last 11.1 innings (2.38 ERA). He faced the Bisons on May 10 and earned his first win of the season allowing just one run in a season-high 6.1 innings. He pitched shutout ball over the first six innings. In his last start, Teut retired 13 of the first 14 Pawtucket batters he faced on May 15. He finished allowing two runs in five innings.

SMITH STILL STREAKING: Mark Smith's 14-game hitting streak, which is the fourth-longest in the IL this season, was snapped last Tuesday, but he still has two streaks alive. Smith has reached base safely in 21 straight games dating back to April 26. That's the fifth-longest such streak in the IL this season, and the longest active streak. Smith has hit safely in 14 straight road games which is the second-longest such streak in the IL - also the longest active streak. Smith leads the Indians with a .326 average, 20 RBI and 11 multi-hit games. He ranks 10th in the IL in batting average. He was the Indians Player of the Month for April.

POWER OUTAGE: The Indians rank 12th in the IL with 22 home runs. The Indians have not hit a home run since May 13 against Pawtucket, a span of six games. The last home run against the Indians came on May 16 against Pawtucket, a span of three games.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Wednesday - Off Day

Thursday at Ottawa - RHP David Manning (2-1, 2.13) vs. RHP John Stephens (1-2, 4.9

Friday at Ottawa - RHP Dave Burba (2-4, 3.23) vs. RHP Sean Douglass (5-3, 3.60)

Saturday at Ottawa - RHP Pasqual Coco (3-4, 5.23) vs. LHP Rigo Beltran (2-0, 1.82)

Lansing (Cubs) 9, Beloit 6

Ugh -- swept by the Cubs again...

Game Summary from the Lugnuts' Site & perspective:

BELOIT, Wis. - The Lansing Lugnuts (25-16) finished a four-game sweep of the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field Tuesday, finishing the road trip with a 9-6 win over the Brewers affiliate.

The Lugnuts rapped out 10 hits, including four doubles and a triple, as they gave their best offensive effort of the series. Beloit (20-23-1), which had only scored one total run in the previous three games of the series, also had its best offensive output.

Lansing drew first blood, but did not lead the whole way. The Lugnuts brought in four runs in the third inning off of Beloit starter Jeff Housman (0-3). They scored their first run when Ryan Theriot reached on an error by third baseman Jeff Eure; their second and third came on a solid double to left center by Buck Coats. The scoring finished in the inning when a Donny Hood sacrifice fly scored Coats.

Lansing starting pitcher Yorkin Ferreras (2-1) lost that lead by surrendering one run in the bottom of the inning and four more in the fourth. Ferreras lasted five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits.

Lansing's offensive unit earned Ferreras nonetheless, bashing Housman and reliever Gabe Mendoza for a five-run sixth inning. Keith Butler tied the score with a double that plated Hood and J.J. Johnson provided the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Milo Salas. With two outs in the inning, Felix Pie tripled in two runs and Theriot singled in another.

Lansing's bullpen took care of the lead the rest of the way, with four pitchers contributing out of the pen. Federico Baez threw one inning and gave up only an unearned run, precipitated by an error by Coats. Mark Carter, Weston O'Brien and Jason Wylie each threw one scoreless inning. Wylie's ninth earned him his seventh save.

Pie, Theriot, Butler and catcher Jose Reyes had two hits each.

Greenville (Braves) 3, Huntsville 2

Tough loss here, for sure, but in the bigger picture, Mike Jones once again conserves his pitches to allow him to work seven, and doesn't walk a batter; Stars lose on an unearned walk-off run; Corey Hart reminds us he can still run with 2 SB's; Stars 5-for-7 in steals overall; David Krynzel now only 13-of-23 in steals, yuck; Kade Johnson now 1-for-his-first-22 at the AA level...

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 11, High Desert 9, 11 innings

Farm teams now 0-for-11 this week...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks rallied for a run in the ninth inning to get even, but couldn?t pull it out on Tuesday night, as the Quakes won in 11 innings by a final score of 11-9 at Mavericks Stadium.

Nick Gorneault?s two-run single in the 11th off Mavericks reliever Jeff Hundley (0-1) snapped an 8-8 tie as the Quakes took a 10-8 lead. They would add another to go up 11-8 before the Mavs attempted to rally in the bottom of the inning. Dan Boyd?s two-out solo home run off Quakes reliever Dustin Griffith pulled the Mavs to within two at 11-9. After Johnny Raburn walked, it brought Scott Candelaria to the plate representing the tying run. But Candelaria, who hit his first homer of the year earlier in the game, grounded out to second baseman Casey Smith to end the threat. Griffith picked up his first save of the year by working the 11th inning.

The Mavs, now 0-22 when trailing after eight innings, looked to be a step closer to ending that streak, when Raburn beat out a potential game-ending double play as Chris Morris scored to tie the game at 8-8. The Mavs had a chance to win the game in the tenth, as Jason Belcher, who walked to lead off the inning, was stranded at second base when Froilan Villanueva flew out to center field to end the rally.

High Desert, which had not committed a single error so far in the six-games against the Quakes in the series, had four errors on the night. The four errors led to four runs for the Quakes.

The Mavs hit three home runs on the night. Candelaria and Boyd each hit their first, while Brian Foster hit his ninth and is the active team leader in that category.

The win went to Scott Schneider (3-2), who ironically blew the save by allowing the run in the ninth inning. Both starters were chased by the sixth inning. Mavericks starter Danny Kolb went six, allowing seven runs on ten hits, but only three runs were earned.

The Mavs have now dropped three straight and are just 4-7 against the Quakes this year.

The Mavs send Jeff Robinson (0-0) to the hill on Wednesday night as he faces Phil Wilson (1-0) of the Quakes. Game time on Wednesday is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=70

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

NOT PERFECT ENOUGH

It looked like a perfect night, but what started out so promising, turned once again into another bitter, fateful ending for the Stars.

Mike Jones breezed through the G'Brave lineup for five perfect innings, allowing not a hit nor a walk........ In the top of the 6th, Jonesy finally had a lead to work with....... Ryan Knox, who had a big night, raising his average 12 points to .259, singled to the left side, then stole second. . Dave Krynzel moved him to third on a ball hit back to the pitcher. Contact hitter Richard Paz (15 Ks in 117 ABs) made contact and drove a ball down the left field line to score Knox, giving Jones a 1-0 lead.......

Even when the perfecto was broken up in the 6th on a line drive single up the middle by Pete Orr, followed by another single, Jonesy still escaped the inning unscathed....... With Orr on 2nd and Bryce Terveen on 1st, Adam Wainwright bunted a ball too hard back to Jones, who threw to get the leadoff runner at third base for the first out. Cory Aldridge, a .333 hitter against the Stars going into this game, grounded into a force play, as did red-hot James Jurries, and Jones was off the hook.

But history failed to repeat itself in the 7th after Jason Fitzgerald and Bill McCarthy led off with singles....... Instead of catching another break, Richard Lewis hit a ball solidly up the middle. Manager Brian Snitker held up the runners up, loading the bases with nobody out....... It looked like the break would come in this inning when the next hitter, Pete Orr, hit a grounder up the middle to Paz. But Paz juggled what was a sure double play ball and Fitzgerald crossed the plate to tie the game, as Paz flipped to Chris Barnwell to get the force and nothing else......... Bryce Terveen, breaking out of a 2-for-23 slump, then singled to right but when Barnwell misplayed the throw in, he advanced a base, scoring McCarthy and the Braves led, 2-1.

The Stars valiantly came back in the 8th to tie the game after Knox's one-out double down the left field line.......Knox now has 4 doubles in his last 6 games and 7 for the month, after putting up only 2 in April....... Knox then came up with a surprise steal of third, his 2nd stolen base of the night....... Going into this game, he had just 2 steals in 3 atttempts after stealing 9 in 13 attempts in April........ Krynzel followed with a single through the right side, tying the game once again, but after advancing to second on a balk, Dave, a devil-may-care 56.5% basestealer, was caught flatfooted in a rundown as he tried to take third...... With the bases empty, Paz struck out for only the 15th time in 117 at-bats (.128), and it became Ryan Miller's job to hold 'em.

Miller had come on in the 8th inning for Jones. He had already lost two games in this slump in which the Stars had lost 7 of 9 (and now 8 of 10), but still had a 3.52 ERA since it began.......With one out, Miller found himself in trouble after Bill McCarthy singled and Richard Lewis doubled over the first base bag down the right field line for a double. Pete Orr was walked intentionally to load the bases........ Hoping for a double play to get them out of trouble for the 3rd time in four innings, Bryce Terveen, who picked this time to get out of a 2-for-23 slump, hit a hard one-hop grounder wide of first base. Brandon Gemoll made a great dive to stop the ball and still had time to make a decent throw to Kade Johnson to start a double play, but Brandon hurried the throw and it sailed over Johnson's head and to the screen........ Fitzgerald crossed the plate with the winning run.

The Stars have made 57 errors in 43 games, but this is the first time this season a 9th inning error has lost a game........ Errors have played a part in 7 games, including tonight's, this season --- 8 if you want to debate on a the effects of a wild pitch or balk, technically not errors. Tomorrow, I'll have a table specifying these instances..... In the Stars' current five-game losing streak, errors have been a factor in three of them. An unearned run in the 3rd last Friday in a 3-2 loss to the Diamond Jaxx, two more unearned runs early in Saturday's 11-inning game, and tonight's 9th inning loss........ Nearly a quarter of the runs the Stars have given up this season have been unearned.

Matt Parker (1-1, 2.48), who has one of the Stars two victories during this 10-game slide (May 11 vs. Tennessee) will make a spot start for a snake-bitten rotation, Wednesdsay against the G'Braves tough right-hander, Bubba Nelson........ I heard Ben Diggins is not too far from rejoining the rotation, but I don't have any details....... Ryan Miller's three losses have all come during this slump....... Corey Hart stole his first base tonight since April 23....... Mike Jones is 2-0 with two no-decisions and a 1.67 ERA this month. He is the real deal and I'm sure Brewer fans are hoping he remains healthy, an issue that has been a big concern after prospects J.M. Gold, Nick Neugebauer, Jose Garcia, and Jose Mieses have been big disappointments because of sore shoulders and the like.

There's a lot to like about Johnny Raburn -- he's really been bounced around the field as of late, CF, RF, 2B, 3B, SS.

More walks than K's, 13 steals in 18 attempts, but --

42 hits and ONE extra-base-hit, a triple

With his speed, that is mighty hard to do.

I think the season's deep enough in that you could find all kinds of statistical oddities with the kids, both good and bad. Might make for a nice thread topic one of these days...
