High Desert Site Game Summary:

Johnny Raburn legged out his first double -- he must have been reading yesterday; when I checked the audio after five, Jeff Robinson's pitch count was at 55, so he's probably still limited to about 70; not sure why Jason Belcher was removed mid-way through, unless it was simply to get Froilan Villanueva some AB's...

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks ended a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night as they defeated the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a final score of 12-5 at Mavericks Stadium. As impressive as 12 runs on 16 hits sounds, it was the Quakes who contributed to the Mavericks win the most with five errors. Those five errors led to eight unearned runs in the first four innings.

The Quakes took a 1-0 lead in the first as Jeff Mathis hit a solo home run against Mavs starter Jeff Robinson (1-0). Robinson would shake off the homer, allowing just the one run in his 5.2 innings before leaving due to pitch count.

The Mavs would answer in the third inning, scoring seven times against Quakes starter Phil Wilson (1-1). Rancho committed three errors in the inning as all seven runs were unearned. Dan Boyd?s RBI double tied the game at 1-1. Johnny Raburn?s booted ground ball drove in a run from third as the Mavs took the lead for good at 2-1. Mark Ernster knocked in a pair with a two-out hit to make it 4-1. Todd West and Joel Alvarado each had run-scoring hits to make it a 7-1 lead after three.

The Mavs poured it on with four more in the fourth, as Ernster picked up a bases loaded, two-run single. On the play, left-fielder David Gates would misplay the ball, as Scott Candelaria would score from first and allow Ernster to take second. Ernster would score on an Alvarado hit to complete the inning.

Robinson was solid, in earning his first win as a Maverick since the 2001 season. Over 5.2 innings, he scattered eight hits, while striking out six, without walking a man. He departed with the bases loaded in the sixth and two outs, before Justin Gordon came on to get Mike Eylward to ground out to end the threat. Gordon earned his second save as he went the final 3.1 innings.

The Quakes did add two in the seventh and two in the ninth. Tommy Murphy and Jeff Mathis each had three hits to lead the Quakes offensively.

The Mavs will send Chris Saenz to the hill on Thursday morning for a special Safe & Sober Day at Mavericks Stadium. Saenz (4-3) will be opposed by Ervin Santana (3-1). Game time is 10:05 IN THE AM (12 NOON CENTRAL!)
