Link Report for Games of Thursday, May 22nd

In progress: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 7, High Desert 0, nobody retired yet

Yeah, you read that right. As Mike Lindskog noted, apparently RHP Chris Saenz isn't a morning guy. Eight batters, six base hits, two walks, not a single out before being pulled for RHP Aaron Dean, who has allowed the seventh base hit the first time through the Rancho lineup.

Big-time ugh...

Still In Progress Update: Rancho Cucamonga 11, High Desert 9, after eight innings

The eighth inning ended with Manager Tim Blackwell waving in Scott Candelaria for an attempted but not successful inside-the-park HR. Instead, the hit went as an RBI triple as the Mavs scored four in the eighth to close the gap. Nice job by the bullpen today; never give up on a High Desert broadcast, especially at home...

Final: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 12, High Desert 9

Down 9-0 before coming to bat even once, the Mavs managed to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Ozzie Chavez grounded out to end it. We'll let the High Desert site game summary fill in all the details later on.

For entertainment value, you couldn't help but love when Mike Lindskog actually had to go off the air for a few seconds to chase away some kids who wouldn't stop messing with the crowd microphone placed outside of his booth, despite his repeated on-air efforts telling them to stop. Now that's minor league baseball http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? In the only 10 AM game this season, it was the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes who did the rising and the shining, as they scored nine, first-inning runs, on their way to a 12-9 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday morning at Mavericks Stadium.

Mavs right-hander Chris Saenz (4-4) had his roughest outing this season, as he faced eight men in the first inning and didn?t retire a batter. Aaron Dean came on and allowed a run as well, as the Quakes took a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning. Nick Gorneault and Jason Aspito each had two-run singles for the Quakes.

After Mark Ernster?s two-run double off Quakes starter Ervin Santana (4-1) put the Mavs on the board in the bottom of the first, the Quakes got two more in the second off Dean to take a commanding 11-2 lead.

The Mavs would rally though, scoring the next seven runs to pull to within two at 11-9. The Mavs got two in the fifth, one in the seventh, and then four in the bottom of the eighth. Scott Candelaria capped off the inning by hitting a run-scoring triple off the wall in left field that was misplayed by left-fielder David Gates. Candelaria was waived home by Manager Tim Blackwell, but was thrown out for the final out of the inning.

In the ninth, the Quakes got a huge insurance run off Jeff Hundley to take a 12-9 lead, as Justin Turner picked up an RBI single to score Michael Napoli who doubled to open the inning.

The Mavs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Scott Schneider picked up his third save of the year by getting Ozzie Chavez to hit into a fielder?s choice to end the game.

Mike Eylward led six Quakes players who had at least two hits, going 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Mavs send Dan Hall (4-3) to the hill on Friday night against the Lancaster JetHawks at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

Indianapolis Media Notes for Thursday:

Notice that LHP Nate Teut, not RHP David Manning, starts tonight (due to the rainout of the prior Indy game)...

TONIGHT: The Indians head to Ottawa for the only time in 2003. The Tribe is on the last half of a seven-game road trip. The Tribe dropped all three games at Buffalo earlier this week. The Indians went 3-4 against the Lynx last season taking two of three contests played at Lynx Stadium. The Indians are 19-19 against Ottawa since joining the IL in 1998.

The Indians are in the midst of a five-game losing streak with the last win coming May 14 against Pawtucket. The Tribe's longest losing streak this season was seven games from April 13-20. The Indians have scored just one run and are hitting .144 (13-for-90) on the trip.

The Indians are 13 games under .500 for the first time since Aug. 13 of last season. The low-water mark last year was 14 games below .500 on Aug. 2.

MONDAY: The Indians got back on the scoreboard and managed seven hits against Buffalo, but lost 3-1. Joe Lawrence and Jason Conti had two hits for the Tribe. Nate Grindell, Victor Martinez and Coco Crisp drove in runs for Buffalo.

DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher is with the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher has made three appearances working one inning each time. He is scheduled throw two innings or 30 pitches tonight.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut makes his fourth appearance for the Indians since coming over from Iowa on May 2. Teut has turned in two strong efforts in a row allowing three runs in his last 11.1 innings (2.38 ERA). He faced Buffalo on May 10 and earned his first win of the season allowing just one run in a season-high 6.1 innings. He pitched shutout ball over the first six innings. In his last start, Teut retired 13 of the first 14 Pawtucket batters he faced on May 15. He finished allowing two runs in five innings.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Friday at Ottawa - RHP David Manning (2-1, 2.13) vs. RHP Sean Douglass (5-3, 3.60)

Saturday at Ottawa - RHP Dave Burba (2-4, 3.23) vs. LHP Rigo Beltran (2-0, 1.82)

Sunday at Ottawa - RHP Pasqual Coco (3-4, 5.23) vs. LHP Eric DuBose (4-2, 3.61)

Ottawa (Orioles) 3, Indianapolis 2

Another stellar day for the farm teams -- not; Steve Scarborough briefly a hero, then a goat; Jayson Durocher struggles...

Indy Site Game Summary:

OTTAWA, ONT. -- In his first game since being called up from Single-A, Ottawa's Brandon Littleton scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Ottawa Lynx (25-21) defeated the Indianapolis Indians 3-2 at Lynx Stadium on Thursday night. Littleton's Triple-A debut ruined a quality performance on the mound by the Tribe's Nate Teut and sends the Indians (15-29) to their sixth straight loss.

Jayson Durocher made his third one-inning rehabilitation start of the season for the Indians, but unlike the first two outings was unable to make quick work of the top of the oppenents' order. The Lynx put together four singles including RBI basehits by Jack Cust and Robert Machado to take an early 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Lynx starter John Stephens baffled Indians bats for first five innings of the ballgame, allowing only two hits before taking the mound to start the sixth. After Cody McKay popped out to shortstop, Steve Scarborough brought the Tribe offense to life by hitting a line-drive solo home run down the left field line to bring the Indians within one run at 2-1. Then, following a two-out double to dead-center field by Bill Hall and a walk to Jason Conti, Mark Smith tied the score with an opposite field double to right field scoring Hall. The double extended Smith's road game hitting streak to 15 games, the second longest such streak in the International League this season.

Teut, making his second appearance out of the bullpen in relief of Durocher this season, came on to begin the second inning and did not allow a hit in his first four innings for the Tribe. Teut pitched brilliantly through the seventh inning allowing only two hits while getting help from an Indians defense that turned double plays to end the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth inning Littleton, fresh from Single-A Delmarva of the South Atlantic League, doubled to left field and moved to third on Joey Hammond's single putting runners on first and third with no outs against Teut. After striking out Eddy Garabito for the first out, Teut was relieved by Danny Kolb to face Felix Escalona. Escalona hit a ground ball booted by shortstop Steve Scarborough allowing Littleton to score easily from third for with the winning run.

Teut dropped to 1-2 on the season despite lowering his ERA to 3.18 in pitching 6.1 innings allowing four hits and the lone run. Bill Pulsipher, who came on to relieve Stephens to begin the seventh, recorded his first victory of the season by pitching two scoreless innings for Ottawa. Mike Garcia retired the Tribe in order in the ninth to record his 12th save of the season.

The Indians will look to gather their first win of this seven game road trip on Friday night when the two teams meet in the second of this four game series. David Manning (2-1, 2.13) will pitch for Indianapolis, and Sean Douglass (5-3, 3.60) for Ottawa. The Indians return home to Victory Field on Monday for a Memorial Day contest with Rochester.
