Link Report for Games of Friday, May 23rd

Indianapolis Media Notes for the weekend:

The notes won't change during the course of this road weekend series, so I'll just link to them now rather than cut and paste bits and pieces; the most interesting items include a Jayson Durocher update, the fact that a fifth starting pitcher still hasn't been established (due by Monday), and the fact that the Tribe hasn't been 15 games below .500 since late in the 1993 season! And it's only May! The folks in Indianapolis may be looking at a team with an eventual record they haven't seen the likes of in decades. The Brewers will have to earn a LOT of good will with Indy management next season in order to extend this player development agreement beyond 2004.

Indianapolis 4, Ottawa (Orioles) 0

Indy Site Game Summary:

OTTAWA, ONT. -- The Indianapolis Indians snapped a six-game losing streak by posting the team's first shutout victory since April 11 with a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Lynx on Friday night. Three Indians pitchers combined to limit the Lynx (25-22) to only four hits as starter David Manning improved his record to 3-1 for the Indians (16-29).

Manning pitched five innings allowing three hits, none of which left the infield, and walked three while striking out five to lower is ERA to 1.53 in his sixth appearance since being moved into the starting rotation on April 23. Shane Nance relieved Manning to start the sixth inning and pitched two scoreless frames allowing one hit while striking out three before turning the game over to Roberto Giron to start the eighth. Giron pitched two hitless innings to preserve the shutout and earn his fifth save of the season.

Overshadowed by the stellar pitching performance turned in by the Tribe was Lynx starter Rafael Pina, who took the loss in his first start at Triple-A in 2003 despite allowing only five hits in seven innings pitched. Pina's one blemish came when Mark Smith led off the second inning off with a walk and moved to third on Jim Rushford's double, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Keith Luuloa followed with a sacrifice fly which allowed Smith to score, and then Cody McKay singled to bring home Rushford for a 2-0 Indians lead. The Indians then loaded the bases on consecutive one-out singles by Wilton Veras and Steve Scarborough for the top of the Indians lineup, but Pina got Jason Conti to fly out to shallow right field and Bill Hall to ground into a fielders' choice to end the threat, and keep the Lynx in the ballgame.

Ottawa's best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the third inning when Manning issued back-to-back one out walks before Smith made the play of the game in right field, diving to make the catch of a fly ball in the right field corner off the bat of Eddy Garabato which prevented the Lynx from capitalizing on the two free passes. Ottawa stranded nine runners in the game.

The Tribe added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning when Steve Scarborough lined a single to left off of reliever Hector Carrasco to score both Veras and Luuloa, giving Giron a 4-0 cushion heading into the bottom of the inning.

The Indians and Lynx will continue the four-game series from North of the border on Saturday evening when Indians manager Cecil Cooper sends Dave Burba (2-3, 3.23) to face Rigo Beltran (2-0, 1.82) and the Lynx at 6:05 p.m. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon and the Tribe will return to Victory Field on Monday evening for a Memorial Day contest with the Rochester Red Wings at 6:00 p.m.

Indianapolis Box Score:

We really should focus on David Manning's success soon, even if he's 30 years old...

Details on the Beloit loss from the Kane County site and perspective:

The audio archive is already available at the Cougars' site, which I'll repeat is such a cool feature; too bad the games haven't been worth going back and checking out...

Geneva, IL ? The Cougars (31-17) extended their winning streak to three straight games with a 2-1 victory against the Beloit Snappers (20-25) on Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Kane County improved their record to 6-0 against Beloit and 20-4 against the Western Division.

Drew Dickinson (6-2) pitched a terrific game scattering just two hits in seven innings. Dickinson allowed one unearned run, walked three and fanned four. Chris Shank pitched a perfect eighth, and Jeff Muessig yielded a hit and a strikeout in Beloit?s final at-bat to earn his 10th save of the season.

Tom Wilhelmsen (4-2) suffered his second loss of the season for Beloit. Both runs he allowed were unearned on six hits, five walks, and five strikeouts.

All of the runs in tonight?s game were scored in a very ironic third inning. For the second straight night, the Snappers plated home the first run. Prince Fielder reached on a throwing error by shortstop John McCurdy, scoring Callix Crabbe from second base.

In the Cougars third, Fielder committed a throwing error allowing McCurdy to score from second base. McCurdy began the rally with a two-out single off Wilhelmsen. After a walk to Nelson Cruz, Brant Colamarino (2-for-3) blooped a two-out RBI single, proving to be the game-winning hit.

John Baker singled in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 10-games. Baker had a 10-game hitting streak earlier in the season (April 6-18).

The Snappers offense came from John Vanden Berg, who finished 2-for-3, both hits were singles.

The Cougars and the Snappers play game three of their four-game series on Saturday night ? game time is 6:00 PM. The pitching match-up features RHP Joe Blanton (2-6, 3.42) taking on RHP Dennis Sarfate (3-2, 2.20).

In Progress: Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 10, High Desert 1, after six innings

Jethawks score six in the sixth inning to break it open; Mavs have only mustered three hits thus far...

I will say the Mavericks have a very, very neat promotion for Saturday in which all the Mavs will wear classic ball-and-glove 1980's Brewer jerseys, which will then be auctioned off as game-worn jerseys after the game for charity.

High Desert front office management seems to be top-notch, and I know they were truly pleased when the Brewers became the first organization to renew their player development agreement with them. Of course, that was Dean Taylor and Greg Riddoch's call. It'll be interesting to see what happens after the 2004 season when renewal time comes up again...

Huntsville *only* had 4 errors, including two by Dave Krynzel. Super Dave made up for it with a nice night at the plate, going 2-2 with a double, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases (and a CS). JJ Hardy also contributed 2 hits in 3 AB, with a walk and a HR. Luis Martinez got the start, going 4 1/3, and Matt Parker got the win in relief.

Everything you could possibly need to know about the Huntsville victory --

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=74

David Weiser's back after some rain-induced days off:

ROBBED

All's well that ends well, but getting there sometimes is hard on the eyes....... Early signs were telling me this was going to be the same ol' same ol' as the Stars endeavored to break their 5-game losing streak. The bad breaks kept coming.

In the 2nd inning, with runners on the corners after a leadoff double in the alley to right by Corey Hart, Chris Barnwell bunted the first pitch he saw, straight up in the air where catcher Lukas McKnight was waiting, ending the inning.........

In the top of the 3rd, Josh Arteaga hit a routine fly ball to Dave Krynzel in center that was routinely caught. But in transferring the ball to his hand to throw it back in, he dropped it. Third base umpire John Woods impulsively gave Arteaga second base. I couldn't believe this! Krynzel did not try to, in one motion, catch and throw the ball back in to the infield. Why would he have any reason to? Arteaga was the leadoff hitter........ It was a snap call --- an impetuous, impulsive, spurious call that cost the Stars their first run......... On the next play, Lukas McKnight hit a fly ball, again to Krynzel. This time Krynzel squeezed it before he threw, but perhaps in anger, he overthrew the ball to third base, over the head of Hart, allowing Arteaga to reach third, doubling his entire error total for the season on one play......... Arteaga would then score on a pitch that went through Kade Johnson's legs.

The Stars, always a never-say-die bunch during this bad spell, scored three runs in the 3rd, highlighted by J.J. Hardy's long drive over the Papa John's sign (the third tier of billboards) in left for a 2-run HR.

But more of the same hair-trigger reaction from this crew led by John Woods continued in the 4th inning....... With one out and nobody on in the top of the 4th, Luis Martinez was ejected from the game after his high, inside, first pitch grazed McKnight in the shoulder....... Martinez, robbed from getting the winning decision in this game, was thumbed by home plate ump Brandon Bushee without a warning, which I thought would have been the customary thing to do for an ump, a professional one, anyway....... Manager Frank Kremblas came out to protest, at huge risk given the record of this umpiring crew, to no avail, of course......... Stay tuned, Stars fans. This is a three-game series and the men (and woman) in blue are just getting warmed up.

Matt Parker, who was scheduled to be one of the starting pitchers in the Greenville series, continued his perfect streak in May --- 13 2/3 innings this month without allowing an earned run, in relief of Martinez, holding the 3-1 lead........

Nervous enough with just a two-run lead, and bad luck still hounding the Stars, the uneasiness continued when Hart overthrew Gemoll on ground ball by Mike Dzurilla to lead off the 7th....... Just an inning before, Hart had made a fine play after dropping a liner hit by Jason Dubois. Hart picked up the ball on the bounce and rocketed the ball to 1st base, where Gemoll made a fine play on the other end, making the big stretch to catch Hart's bullet......... With the hit-and-run on, shortstop Nick Ortiz knocked the first pitch to him beautifully between first and second, allowing Dzurilla to go to third....... Reliever Matt Childers was able to strikeout Arteaga on a 2-2 pitch, and get McKnight to fly to shallow center. Diamond Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson had Dzurilla running and he was almost caught in a rundown, but the ball by Krynzel was overthrown and only Gemoll, who kept the ball in play, kept the runner honest and he was chased back to third........ Just as it looked like the Stars would get out of the inning, newly-acquired pinch-hitter John Powers, a former Mobile Bay Bear, lined an 0-2 pitch to left, scoring Dzurilla to make the score, 3-2.

The Stars, however, put together the insurance runs in the 7th....... With one out, Krynzel walked then stole his 2nd base of the night. Kicking the ball out of the glove of Nick Ortiz, he scurried and slid safely into third. Hardy, recovered from his lower back strain with all that rest the Stars got thanks to Mother Nature, dropped a single that fell between Josh Arteaga, the right fielder Jason Dubois, and 1st baseman Dzurilla in shallow right field. That scored Krinkles, and on the throw to the plate, Hardy took second. With two out, Hardy would score on Gemoll's single to short....... After that, six of the next seven Jaxx hitters were retired to end the game.

So, all's well that ends well. The Stars snap their 5-game losing streak and even better, leap over Birmingham back into first place. The Barons were shutout by Mobile, 2-0 at Hank Aaron Stadium....... Luis Martinez (2.08 ERA in May) continues his streak of having never given up more than two earned runs per start...... A bigger oddity, though, is the number of unearned runs on his ledger....... Only 8 of the 17 runs he's given up have been earned. In the history of the Huntsville Stars, only one pitcher has had more than 40% of his total runs given up, unearned --- Weston Weber in 1991, who pitched 34 games, all in relief. He gave up 23 runs, but 43.5% of them were unearned........ So far this season, 52.9% of the runs given up by Martinez have been unearned....... Says something about our defense, doesn't it?....... Tonight the Stars committed 4 of the 7 errors in this game. That makes 61 errors in 44 games........ The seven errors is the most in a game since April 13, when the Stars played Jacksonville.

Mike Adams, who picked up an easy save #5, has now allowed only two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings over his last seven appearances....... Krynzel doubled, singled, and walked in three plate appearances against his former high school teammate from Green Valley High in Henderson, Nevada, Mike Nannini. Krinkles and Nannini are not, per se, close buds, but they do keep tabs on each other and have since they began their pro careers. Nannini, in fact, was the more highly regarded and sought after of the two out of high school. The Astros grabbed him in the 1st round of the 1998 draft and a year ago, was the #17 minor league prospect in the Houston organization........ Feasting on Nannini put Krinkles over .300 (now at .305) for the first time this season. He's 11-for-23 on his current 6-game hit streak, and .343 for May....... There is, however, that 57.7% stolen base success rate and he's within aim of the club record of 20 in one season, owned since 1985 by Luis Polonia. Dave has 11. Add the five from last year, and he's 16th on the Stars' all-time list, tied with a host of four other former Stars....... Corey Hart equaled his April total of six doubles tonight....... Luis Martinez nearly hit his first fair ball tonight. On a 2-and-1 pitch, he hit a ball, actually swung at it, taking one hop fair inside the baseline on the 3rd base side, before going foul. He could have beaten it out if it had stayed fair. He wound up striking out as he always does, and is now 0-for-13 on the season, all of them strikeouts.

Saturday, they're giving tote bags away to the first 1,500 adults...... Goody. I can add to my tote bag collection. In the trunk of my car....... Pedro Liriano (3-4, 2.74) will start for Huntsville. Angel Guzman (0-1, 3.18), who is one tough cookie, will go for the Diamond Jaxx. He's the #1 pitcher in the Cub organization, and the #2 prospect overall behind Hee Seop Choi, who's already in Chicago. Some Cub officials believe he's on the same track Mark Prior was, and could go up just as quick. The Stars did not see him on their trip to Pringles Park........ Liriano is 2-1 with a 1.63 ERA in four starts this month. He averages 3.32 runs of support/9 innings, but has had no runs in back of him in his last two starts.

Bucky Jacobsen homered in Friday night's game against the Lookouts, helping Tennessee to a 7-4 victory and giving the former Huntsville Star, the HR leadership in the Southern League.
