Link Report for Games of Saturday, May 24th

We'll start things off a little differently today by asking everyone to remember to visit the Alumni thread here on the Minor League Forum (because we work so hard on it http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif ) . It was just revised today (Saturday), and includes the following updates that we think fans and friends of the Huntsville and High Desert organizations will find particularly interesting as they learn where old friends and teammates are playing now:

May 24th Updates:

Check out Cristian Guerrero in the "Prospects of Particular Interest" section.

RHP Jack Krawczyk, released by the A's organization, is back in the California League with Lancaster (Arizona) and, in fact, could face High Desert this weekend.

RHP's Ruddy Lugo, Matt Yeatman, and Gerry Oakes, all traded as noted by their names within the Alumni thread, have had rough times thus far in 2003.

Many alums have been promoted or demoted this month, and these changes have been noted by each player's name.

Many more independent league players who have just begun or are about to begin their seasons have been added -- look for these names among others: Eliezer Alfonzo, Rodney Allen, Brant Brown, David Gibralter, Derry Hammond, Cedrick Harris, Chris McGee, Heath McMurray, Aaron Myers, Chris Rowan, Jeff Sparks, and Jude Voltz.

You've got to give credit to the Independent League guys for sticking with it -- so few end up back in affiliated ball. Former Beloit pitcher Heath McMurray started out in indy ball in 2002, was picked up by the Reds' organization, and pitched pretty well for them, but finds himself among the independent ranks again in 2003.

And don't think it's easy to find a spot with these teams. Former Ogden Raptor Jeremy Shorey (2000, 2001) had signed on to be the local boy with the Bangor (Maine) Lumberjacks this spring after not pitching in 2002. He was just released, and told to keep pitching in case someone goes down or doesn't do well. He had an excellent pre-season for them: 9 innings pitched, 12 K's, no walks, 4 hits, no runs. But they only keep 22 players and they have to keep five rookies and so it came down to a numbers game, again. There are strict limits on how many players with varying amounts of pro ball experience can make up each roster.

By the way, we located RHP Doug Johnston (he of the infamous Ray King steal from the Cubs). He's pitching for the Lincoln (Nebraska) Salt Dogs in the Northern League. He doesn't appear on our Alumni list, which begins as of January 2001 for minor league players.

Huntsville 13, West Tenn (Cubs) 9

And this one was billed as a pitchers' duel -- Pedro Liriano did do well...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Nice detailed account as always -- huge game for the top of the order; it mentions Matt Parker in relief here, they meant Ryan Miller...

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

RECORD DAY FOR DAVE

Whatever Corey Hart and Dave Krynzel have been eating, they need to share their diet plan with the rest of the team.

The Stars badly needed a purgative game like this, and it was a laugher until the Diamond Jaxx exploded for seven runs in the 6th inning off lefthander Brian Adams, making an unimpressive home debut....... As for Hart --- four hits! The second four-hit game by a Huntsville Star this year (Krynzel had the other one) and four RBIs!....... Man, he's been on a tear! 9-for-16 in his last four games and 16-for-31 (.516) in his last 9 games, making him a sure bet as league honors candidate at the end of the month....... In addition, 8 runs batted in and 6 doubles in his last 9 games....... In a single day, Corey boosted his batting mark from .298 to .313 --- his highest mark since starting the season 2-for-6.

Dave Krynzel's day was no less remarkable. Four stolen bases --- tying a club record........ Stan Javier had achieved this twice during the 1985 season -- on July 3 and July 27 and Kerwin Moore repeated this feat on August 28, 1998........ That gives Krynzel six stolen bases in two days, which also ties a record held by Javier and Moore.

After Ryan Knox reached first base to lead off the Stars half of the 1st inning, Krynzel hit into a force play, then stole 2nd and 3rd. He would score on Hart's single to left center, also scoring Richard Paz who reached on a walk...... Hart would score on Chris Barnwell's two-out infield single, as the Stars batted around in the first off D'Jaxx starter Angel Guzman, who did not have a pretty day.

In the second, Knox doubled down the left field line, stopping at third on Krynzel's infield single. With the count 2-and-1 on Paz, Krynzel stole 2nd, but Paz could only bring in Knox on a fly ball to right. Krynzel would score on Hart's double to the center field wall........

By the third inning, Knox was up for the third time, striking out as the Stars took a 6-2 lead into the dugout on Barnwell's thunderous home run to left.......

By the time the Stars came up in the 4th inning, Guzman had been spent. He had thrown 74 pitches. Pedro Liriano, by comparison, had expended 53 --- quite a few as Liriano went 2-and-2 and 3-and-2 several times on hitters....... In the 4th inning, Krynzel hit another infield single, this time to the right side and stole his fourth base. Paz went full and walked, setting up Hart's fourth RBI, another double, this one down the left field line scoring Krynzel, giving the Stars a 7-2 lead....... Dave had at least four more innings to break the club record, but he struck out in the 5th, 6th, and 8th innings off new hurlers........ At this point, D'Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson came out with the hook and Guzman was a gone Guzman after 85 pitches.

The Stars made it five straight scoring innings for the first time since August 6, 1999, in a big way....... Taking the advice of his coaches to drive more inside pitches, Brandon Gemoll got hold of an inside breaking ball and collared it over the wall in right-center for a grand-slam home run, giving the Stars a big 12-2 lead, the third grand salami hit by the Stars this season (Corey Hart has the other two)....... The inning started on a tense moment, though, when Ryan Knox was hit, it appeared on the hand, by a pitch from reliever T.P. Waligora. Knox was in obvious pain and the concern was magnified by the fact that Knox's left hand was broken late last May by a pitch and almost exactly a year before that at High Desert on a pitch in exactly the same place......... Fortunately the word came back later in the game that it was a bruised right forearm. Knox was taken out of the game and replaced by Chris Cosbey in the 6th inning. He may be day-to-day.

Manager Frank Kremblas went to Brian Adams in the sixth, inactive for five days. He had come into this game with three scoreless innings in relief on the Stars last road trip, but this was not his day......... He loaded the bases on a single to left by Jose Velazquez and walks to Jackson Melian, the former Huntsville Star who returned today to the Diamond Jaxx, and Josh Arteaga, on eight pitches....... Casey Kopitzke hit a hard 1-and-2 pitch to Hart, always an adventure at third base, but Corey stepped on the bag to force Melian, allowing Velazquez to score, then whipped the ball on target to first for the only double play of the game. Five successive singles followed, however, and then a two-base throwing error on another hard hit grounder to Hart, when all he had to do was step on third, something that should have been instant recall, to force Johnny Powers for the third out....... As a result, two runs scored and the Diamond Jaxx were back in the ballgame again, trailing by three runs.......

The Stars were saved, though. Ryan Miller got Melian to fly out to Cosbey to end the inning and he and Mike Adams combined to slam the door on the Diamond Jaxx. Adams allowed a pair of runners to reach base in the top of the ninth, the latter on a freaky single that hit the top of the bag at third base and arced over the head of Hart, but he struck out Kopitzke on an 0-and-2 slider to end the game.

Props to home plate ump Ria Cortesio for showing the restraint I haven't witnessed from crew chief John Woods and Brandon Bushee....... When Knox argued a called third strike to end the 3rd inning, Cortesio simply walked away. And when Liriano hit Brandon Harris with a pitch in the top of the 1st, she didn't throw him out!...... Cortesio is the Southern League's first female ump.

Ben Diggins traveled to Milwaukee, Saturday, to have an MRI....... He could be facing season-ending surgery for a partially torn ligament in his elbow, however they are going to try to rehab it.. If Diggins opts for surgery, and this would be Tommy John surgery, he would be out for the rest of the Stars' season...... Pitcher Matt Hammons will throw from the side for a couple of days, starting Sunday, then be ready before the end of the week.

Sunday at 2 pm, Derek Lee (4-2, 3.25) will get his chance to throw his 600th inning as a Huntsville Star (he needs just three) as he goes to the mound against D'Jaxx righty Travis Anderson (1-1, 5.06). There will be a Christian concert following the game, followed by salvation for everyone. But bring your rabbit's foot just in case.

Now are you ready for this........ I never liked "West Tenn Diamond Jaxx" as a name, which is why I name the team after the city, Jackson, and I'm forced to stomach the name "Diamond Jaxx" cause there's nothing left to call them after that, but for the stupidest nickname for a team, I present the Montgomery Biscuits.

Yes, that's the fearsome new name for the Montgomery franchise that will replace Orlando next season....... I am not kidding....... Their web site, www.biscuitsbaseball.com is already up on the internet, so take a look for yourself....... The name was chosen by owners Tom Dickson and Sherrie Myers among more than 3,000 entries in a fan contest........ The announcement was made on the main stage of the Jubilee City Fest with more than 10,000 people in attendance. God knows what the reaction was at the precise moment. I'm going to have to get onto www.al.com to see the reactions on the Montgomery forum......

For myself, I was laughing too much upon first hearing it to realize this was the stupidest name for a team in all creation. I guess they'll be playing, oh the jokes are pouring now, in "The Oven", coming out of "the oven" instead of the dugout as they're introduced. "The Biscuit Basket Catch" ...... I realize it's a challenge coming up with a name to match Montgomery's tarnished identity, since their cultural, social, and political history is nothing to be proud of, but just what does a biscuit have to do with baseball? Please, can anyone tell me??........ Don Rizzardi, one of the Stars official scorers came up with the name "Capitols", which is excellent. Tell me, out of all those entries, didn't one person come up with that, and if so, why didn't it click? ....... The team's official colors are orange, yellow, and white. How gay!....... And the mascot, named Monty, is a biscuit character with a pad of butter for a tongue........ Oh well, Montgomery has to live with this, not Huntsville. I hope the players coming up in the Tampa Bay farm system have a good sense of humor. Can't wait for the comedy act to come to Huntsville next season.

I'll have to ask David to check with Ryan Knox -- I thought I remembered that each of Knox's hand injuries the past two years involved plays on the basepaths, and not HBP's. A painful reminder for Knox, either way -- MassBrew

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 16, High Desert 2

Not exactly wowing the home crowds this weekend, these Mavericks -- so much for the classic Brewer jerseys; this team has gutted it out for a while, but now just seems to be overmatched on a nightly basis -- it may be a long, long hot desert summer...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The Lancaster JetHawks established new season-highs in both hits and runs as they pounded the Mavs for a second straight game, winning on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium by a score of 16-2.

Kyle Nichols hit two home runs and Chris Snyder hit a grand slam as the JetHawks picked up 20 base hits against Maverick pitching. The JetHawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Nichols hit his eighth of the year off Mavs starter Brian Mazone. They scored four more in the third to go up 6-0. A run in the fourth gave them a 7-0 lead before the Mavs got their first base runner.

Matthew Henrie (3-5) was stingy on the hill, retiring the first nine hitters he faced, before the Mavs broke the ice in the fourth. Chris Morris singled to lead off the inning, then stole second. After a Johnny Raburn single moved Morris to third, Morris scored on a sac fly from Froilan Villanueva. After Scott Candelaria reached on a fielder?s choice, Jason Belcher doubled him home to cut the lead to five runs at 7-2.

The JetHawks stockpiled runs in the next few innings, scoring two in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and finally four in the eighth, on Snyder?s first grand slam of the year. Maverick reliever David Nolasco gave up a one-out single to Mike Thiessen, then walked two straight before allowing Snyder?s sixth homer of the year, and third in two games.

Mazone (0-5) allowed nine runs in five innings, while Nolasco gave up seven in three innings. Bobby Bystrowski pitched a scoreless ninth for High Desert. The Mavs have now allowed 30 runs on 35 hits in the last two games.

Lancaster had six men with multi-hit games, led by Nichols and Mayobanex Santana who each had four hits.

The Mavs look to break their three-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon, sending Danny Kolb (2-2) to the hill against Justin Wechsler (4-2) at 3:05 (5:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Kane County (A's) 2, Beloit 1, 12 innings

Maybe if the Snappers activate Don Money -- can't complain about the pitching, though...

Game Summary from the Cougars' Site:

Kirk Nordness reached on a bases loaded two-out error by shortstop Chas Terni in the bottom of the 12th, plating Brant Colamarino, leading the Cougars (32-17) to a 2-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers (20-26). Manny Rodriguez (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 12th inning to earn his first win. Gabe Mendoza (1-2) surrendered the unearned run in the Cougars final at-bat to suffer the loss.

The victory for the Cougars was their fourth straight and their seventh consecutive win against Beloit this season. Kane County is now 4-0 in extra-innings and 21-4 against the Western Division.

Both starting pitching pitchers were terrific during seven-inning stints. Cougars? starter, Joe Blanton yielded five hits, one run, and fanned six. Dennis Sarfate matched Blanton punch for punch, giving up just four hits (none after the second inning), one run and fanning five.

The bullpens were equally tremendous. Cougars? relievers Edward Sierra, Jeff Muessig, and Rodriguez were scoreless in five innings. Bo Hall, Josh Alliston, and Mendoza allowed one unearned run in 4.2 innings pitched.

For the first time in the series, the Cougars lit up the scoreboard first, plating home a run in their first at-bat. Francis Gomez and Kory Wayment began the inning with singles, and John Baker hit into a fielder?s choice to plate home Gomez.

Beloit tied the game at one in the fifth inning. Travis Hinton blasted a solo-home run off Blanton. The home run was the first for Hinton and the fourth allowed by Blanton on the season.

The two teams conclude their four-game series Sunday night at Elfstrom Stadium with ? game time is 6:00 PM. The pitching match-up features Jared Burton RHP (2-1, 2.81) taking on Luis Pena RHP (0-2, 3.86).

You're right, Mass Brew. My bad. Total recall at this time in the morning is not 100% and I had some erroneous information given to me that I wrote down. I updated my site after this had been posted to brewerfan.net, so be sure to take note of the revised director's cut . http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
