Link Report for Games of Sunday, May 25th

Game One: Ottawa (Orioles) 4, Indianapolis 0

Game Two: Indianapolis 6, Ottawa 5

Indy Site Doubleheader Summary:

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- Mark Smith homered and drove in three runs as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Ottawa Lynx 6-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday. The win gave the Tribe (17-30) a split of the four-game series and a split of the twinbill. Ottawa won the first game 4-0.

Smith, who has been the Indians top hitter all season, put the Indians on top 1-0 with his 11th double of the season in the first inning. He and Jim Rushford came around to score later in the inning as the Tribe took a 3-0 lead.

Some defensive miscues by Indianapolis helped Ottawa tie the game in the second inning. Left fielder Joe Lawrence got turned around on a fly ball by Jose Leon that hit the wall and went for a double. Fletcher Bates and Napoleon Calzado followed with back-to-back liners down the right field line. Rushford had trouble tracking both balls down, and the triples plated two runs. A single by Steve Lomasney scored Calzado with the tying run.

The Indians took the lead for good in the sixth. After Rushford drew a leadoff walk off of starter Eric DuBose (4-3), Smith belted his fourth home run of the season just inside the left field foul pole. Lynx manager Gary Allenson spent several minutes arguing with home plate umpire James Hoye, but the home run stood.

Keith Luuloa, who was 3-for-6 on the afternoon, smashed a double into the gap in left-center. He later scored the Tribe's sixth run on a sacrifice fly by Cody McKay.

Ottawa rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Jason Childers got out of the jam to earn his second save and make a winner out of starter Pasqual Coco (4-4).

"This was a good win for us," manager Cecil Cooper said. "We've been struggling, and for us to come back after having a lead and then losing it showed some character. Hopefully that's something we can build on as we come back home."

Ottawa won the first game of Sunday's doubleheader on the strength of hurler Rigo Beltran. The lefthander, who had worked seven scoreless innings in his previous start, turned in another seven shutout frames against the Indians. He held the Tribe to four hits and three walks while striking out six to improve to 3-0.

The Lynx got all the runs they needed in a three-run second inning off Dave Burba (2-5). Chris Lemonis singled home the first two runs then scored on a double by B.J. Littleton.

The Indians return to Victory Field Monday to open an eight-game homestand with a 6 p.m. contest against the Rochester Red Wings.

Huntsville 8, West Tenn (Cubs) 4

Ryan Gripp a huge game with three base hits and four RBI; Kade Johnson a feel-good bloop base hit and RBI; Ryan Knox again with his recent hot bat; David Krynzel with yet another triple; Corey Hart still hitting the ball hard even if the hits didn't fall today; Hart did steal home on a double steal as the Stars continue to run wild this series; Jackson Melian's back at AA (from AAA Iowa) and did hit a HR; Derek Lee win #5, Matt Childers with nice work closing it out -- that's enough, Huntsville site update to be up before you know it...

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 7, High Desert 4

Mavs get swept by a combined score of 37-7 over the three-game series. Trailing 7-1 heading into the ninth, the Mavs batted around and got the tying run on base before Scott Candelaria lined out to the outfield to end it. The High Desert bullpen kept it within reach in the late innings, as the High Desert site game summary will detail later on.

It's off to Northern California now for the Mavs, which has proven to be a very tough road trip the past couple of times out.

There's no way that Reid Nichols figures out a way to bounce Manny Parra, Tom Wilhelmsen and Dennis Sarfate all past high-A next year. One maybe, but not all three. We may have to wait until then to see a Maverick starter excel, something we haven't seen since Ben Hendrickson was in the desert last spring. Don't want that to sound too harsh, as Hall, Saenz, Kolb, and Robinson may all contribute at AA next year, but the three converted Beloit relievers (Hall, Saenz, and Kolb) have all struggled in their high-A roles.

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The Lancaster JetHawks remained in first place in the Cal League?s South Division, winning their third straight game on Sunday afternoon, beating the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 7-4 at Mavericks Stadium. The loss is the fourth straight for High Desert, and the first time they have been swept on their home field.

Dan Uggla hit his third homer of the series and 11th of the year to break open a close game in the fifth inning. With the JetHawks leading 2-1 in the fifth, Uggla connected off Mavs starter Danny Kolb for a 5-1 lead. Uggla picked up another RBI in a two-run sixth inning as the JetHawks took a 7-1 lead.

That lead looked like it would be enough, until the Mavs started to rally in the ninth. JetHawks closer Pete Sikaras was charged with three runs, while retiring just two men in the ninth. Carlton Wells came on and walked Jason Belcher with the bases loaded to put the tying run on base. Billy Biggs then came on and threw just one pitch to record his second save though, as Scott Candelaria lined out to center with the tying run at first base to end the game.

The JetHawks took the early lead off Kolb (2-3), as Jay Garthwaite hit his sixth of the year in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. The Mavs answered in the third, as Belcher knocked in Ralph Santana who singled with one out, then stole second base. In the fourth, Garthwaite knocked in the go-ahead run at 2-1, with a fielder?s choice.

Lancaster starter Justin Wechsler (5-2) pitched six innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Former Maverick Jack Krawczyk pitched one scoreless inning, in his first appearance against his former parent club.

Mavs starter Danny Kolb allowed seven runs on ten hits as he took the loss. Justin Backsmeyer and Jeff Hundley combined to pitch 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Mavs were outscored in the three-game series 37-7, and were out-homered 12-0.

The Mavs travel to Stockton on Monday as they face the Ports in game one of a three-game set. Jeff Robinson (1-0) will take on Ben Keiter of the Ports at 7:05 (9:05 Central). The Mavs return home on Friday, June 7th to face Lake Elsinore.

Kane County 4 Beloit 3

I had the errr pleasure of attending this road game this evening. Some notes and observations

*Kane County is a great place to view a game. I believe there were 7400 in attendance, and the place was rocking. People dancing and cheering and having a grand old time. I wish Beloit could draw like this.

*Pena did not have his best stuff.....walked quite a few, even walked one home in the 5/6 something like that. Couldn't throw a strike in innings one or two to save him. Still didn't get shelled. Hopefully the sign of a good pitcher???

*Offensive woes continued until late in the game. Pedro Esparragoza breaks up no hit bid in the middle of the game.

*Prince had a double and scored the first Snapper run. Looking better and better at first base. I'm impressed on how quick he gets down the line after hitting the ball.

*Weird moment for Kane County. Bases loaded...a player rips one to right center. One scores....coach waives player around...Moss grabs the ball....perfect bullet to Pedro. Player already retreating back to third. But another Cougar is on the bag already. Pedro runs down the line. By this time the player on third is running back to second....batter comes into second while the retreating player is coming back to second. Pedro fires....safe.....throw to first....got the batter. Should have had two but a nice play to get one. Moss with a cannon...if he could start to hit a bit I'd be VERY happy. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

*I caught a foul ball in the top of the 9th. I'm telling you Chris and Cory....best way to get a ball is that ricochet off of somebody....even if it's bounce 4 or 5. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

*If you go near that god forsaken town of Chicago bring a jacket. Final temp was 62.....wind chill of 20! or close to it.

*Birdzerk mascot was performing and was very funny. Jeff Eure has some mad dancing skills. He "acted" with the Birdzerk in inning 1 and ended up dancing to stay alive after fake fighting with it. The Bird stole his glove and threw it over the center field wall. Nice job Jeff. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

*Snappers tied game in top of ninth after Steve Moss got on first with a walk. Scored on a Travis Hinton double down right field line.

*Cougars won it in bottom ninth....bases loaded, 2 out....some jerk (http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) hits a bloop to left center and Moss in center and Bibbs in left couldn't get to it. Game over. sigh

*All in all a very enjoyable time. The benefits of higher attendance was very evident as the Cougars had a ton of promotions during the game...every inning was something and tons of crap was flying into the stands. Free programs as you walk in the door with giveaways inside. Seemed like every home game was some kind of promotional giveaway as well when viewing the schedule. Also they had lawn seats in left and right field...nice touch in my opinion. I'd go again for sure and it was easy to find as well.

Awesome report, Madbad -- thanks!

Beloit Game Summary (from the Kane County Site):

Geneva, IL ? Brant Colamarino (3-for-5, 2 RBI) delivered a bases loaded two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading the Cougars (33-17) to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Beloit Snappers (20-27). Chris Shank (5-0) picked up the win in relief, even though he gave up the tying run in the top of the ninth. Ryan Trytten (2-3) surrendered the final run to suffer the loss for Beloit.

The rally in the ninth inning started on a walk to Marcus McBeth. With one out, Kory Wayment ripped a single to left field, advancing McBeth to third base. John Baker was intentionally walked, Jason Basil popped up to second base for the second out, but Colamarino followed with the game-winning hit on an 0-2 pitch.

Leading 3-2 in the ninth inning, Travis Hinton delivered a one-out double scoring Steve Moss and forcing the game to the bottom of the ninth.

The final result of the game overshadowed the great starting performance by Jared Burton. The right-hander, who was making his second start of the season, gave up one lone hit in six innings pitched. Burton walked two and fanned a season high six in the no-decision.

Beloit scored two runs off Shawn Kohn in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to one. Hinton singled home Prince Fielder and Pedro Esparragoza reached on a fielder?s choice to plate home Moss.

Colamarino began the scoring for the Cougars with a one-out bases loaded single in the first inning, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Wayment scored his 33rd on the play, putting him as the team leader in that category. The Cougars added two runs in the fifth inning, knocking starter Luis Pena out of the game. Francis Gomez and Baker picked up the RBI?s.

Beloit Box Score:

Nice work by LHP Justin Gabriel in middle relief; still can't help but think that Luis Pena could have benefited from time in Helena and that there were other fifth starter options...

For those wondering, yes, the Beloit web site has been unavailable all weekend. They'll probably address this on Tuesday.

I've been unable to properly load David Weiser's Huntsville web site, www.starsboxscore.com Monday morning. We'll try later on today, and cut and paste his update then.

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

May weather here has been the worst since 1991 that I can remember --- very wet and much cooler than normal. Fortunately, there hadn't been a single rainout this month, despite record rainfall amounts in this city......... While the weather was cool, the Stars stayed hot as they pounded the Diamond Jaxx once again --- 29 hits in 3 days, hitting .287 in this series. The Stars kept 1½ in first place as Birmingham beat Mobile, 4-2 on Sunday......... The Stars end the first half with this team and Birmingham, so it is no time to give an inch to either. I look forward to seeing a sweep tomorrow afternoon as Mike Jones takes the hill in a bid to win his 6th.

The Stars continue to run rings around the Jaxx -- 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts and this series isn't over. That's far more bases and attempts this season off any opponent this young season. (They stole 8 bases in 10 attempts vs. Mobile, April 22-25)........ I'd like to see what the record is for a four-game series, but I won't have the time. That is something I'd like to look into, though.

Ryan Gripp's starts for Huntsville are rare. He was a sub-par hitter for the Diamond Jaxx the last two seasons, hitting .232 last year, and was traded to Milwaukee for Paul Bako after he was passed over in the Rule V draft........ Hitless in 10 trips as a pinch-hitter, in his rare starts he makes the most of his opportunities. He came in hitting .250, .286 after this game........ He was clearly the hero in this game, doubling his RBI total, but it was another Ryan was the catalyst for two of the Stars' three rallies.

Ryan Knox led off the game with a bunt single, then took second on a single to right by Dave Krynzel who continues to freely spray the ball ....... That extended Krynzel's hitting streak to 8 games........ J.J. Hardy's grounder moved Knox to 3rd, setting up the first of Ryan Gripp's four RBIs......... With two out, Gripp singled to score Knox. Richard Paz followed with a single to score Hardy as the Stars answered back the Diamond Jaxx' two runs.

In the 5th inning, Knox once more led off with a hit --- a sharp single to center. He stole second and Krynzel walked. Hardy sacrificed them both to scoring position........ Corey Hart was intentionally walked so loser Jason Szuminski could try and get the double play grounder from Gripp........ Instead, he rifled a single to center, scoring two runs to break the 2-2 tie........ With Corey at 3rd and Gripp on 1st, the Stars pulled off the double steal, with Hart scoring on the throw to get Gripp..........

The Stars would seal the victory in the 7th against Eric Brown as Krynzel added another triple to his league lead of six to the right field corner........ J.J. singled him home and Gripp once more came through in an RBI situation, smacking a double over the head of Ray Sadler in center field......... Kade Johnson hit his first RBI single since coming up to Huntsville to make the score, 8-3. Hopefully, this will be the hit that breaks him out of this 2-for-28 start. He proved at High Desert that he really carries a big bat, but most hitters who come up to Huntsville find out there's a big adjustment to make. Once he does get in the groove, I think he will really help this club out.

Derek Lee won his first game since May 8. The General pitched his 600th inning in the 3rd inning of today's game. He has pitched more innings and struck out more batters against the Diamond Jaxx than any other Southern League opponent......... He also has the best strikeout rate against this team (6.7 Ks/9IP). Since 1999, he is 5-7 with a 2.75 ERA against the Jaxx........ He ties Mike Jones (5-1, 2.73) for the club lead in victories....... Jonesy will have a chance to recapture it tomorrow as he faces John Webb (0-6, 4.82) in a noon game for Memorial Day......... Matt Childers battled through two innings to finish the game. He has 2 saves in 8 appearances and a 2.81 ERA this month........ The Stars will be adding another pitcher to their roster this week as 28-year old right-hander Ken Ray helps offset the absences of Ben Hendrickson, Ben Diggins, and Matt Hammons. He joins the team from High Desert, where he was 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 7 appearances for the Mavs, after being signed as a free agent on April 28..... Ray has knocked around the minors since 1993, starting in the Royals system, getting a taste of the majors in 1999. He pitched in the Indy leagues for Long Island and Yuma last year.......

Former Star Jack Krawczyk, who was lost in the minor league phase of the Rule V draft last year, made his debut for the Lancaster Jethawks today, pitching a scoreless inning as the Jethawks beat the High Desert Mavericks Sunday, 7-4. The Jethawks are the California League farm team of the Arizona Diamondbacks...
