Link Report for Games of Tuesday, May 27th

Won't be leaving constant updates to annoy you, but with the Brewers on later than usual thought I'd start the thread for tonight's action, especially with the good start here:

In progress: Huntsville 3, Birmingham (White Sox) 0, after one inning

David Krynzel with yet another triple, Corey Hart a sac fly, Brandon Gemoll a two-run HR within that first inning; Matt Parker a scoreless bottom of the inning; enjoyed the Daryl Clark interview on the pre-game, another reason we promote tuning in within each day's Daily Menu...

Doubtful, as he'll have three days to report. They often take a day to visit family, as is the case when you get called up or get sent down as well.

Funny, no one ever takes longer than the plane flight when they get promoted...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Indianapolis 4, Rochester (Twins) 1

Not sure what we'll learn about scheduled starter Nate Teut, but John Foster got the win, even though it was secured after the first inning according to the early linescore...

Indianapolis Box Score:

OK, this makes a bit more sense -- the next question is why was Teut pulled after pitching 4.2 innings...

Final: Huntsville 3, Birmingham (White Sox) 2

Gee, that first inning update I gave you hours ago pretty much summarized all the scoring; did I mention I was a Matt Parker fan? -- not counting Mike DeJean, who arrived indirectly via Juan Acevedo, Parker's all that's left from the Fernando Vina deal...

Indy Site Game Summary:

Mystery question answered...

INDIANAPOLIS -- Behind an early offensive output and clutch relief pitching, the Indianapolis Indians held off the Rochester Red Wings (21-28) on Tuesday night for a 4-1 win at Victory Field. John Foster earned the win in his first appearance of the season for the Indians (18-31) as five Tribe pitchers combined to hold the Red Wings to only one run on nine hits.

The Tribe bats started rolling early facing Rochester starting pitcher Adam Johnson. Mark Smith hit a one-out RBI single to center field scoring Mark Budzinski, and Pete Zoccolillo singled home Jason Conti to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead on Johnson (1-6), the second player taken in the 2000 amateur draft. Smith finished the game 3-for-4 with the RBI.

After Rochester's David Lamb scored on a Luis Rodriguez double in the second inning, the Tribe pounced on Johnson for two more runs in the third inning.

With a leadoff single in the bottom of the third inning, Jim Rushford extended his hitting streak to seven games. He later scored when Zoccolillo grounded into a double play with no outs in the inning. Keith Luuloa and Cody McKay followed Zoccolillo with back-to-back doubles, the latter of which scored Luuloa with the Indians fourth run of the game.

Tribe starter Nate Teut pitched 4.2 innings before leaving the game with back spasms. Foster, optioned to Indianapolis from Milwaukee on Monday, replaced Teut with a 1-0 count on Chad Green, and after allowing a double to Green, struck out Michael Cuddyer to end the inning. After pitching a scoreless sixth, Foster (1-0) left the game having pitched 1.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out two.

Jason Childers pitched a perfect seventh inning and took the mound for the eighth allowing base hits to Green and Cuddyer to lead off the inning. Lefthander Shane Nance was brought in to face Justin Morneau with runners on first and second with no outs, and hit Morneau to load the bases. Nance then struck out Michael Restovich and lured Lamb into a double-play groundout to second base ending the inning. Roberto Giron pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his sixth save of the season.

The Indians and Red Wings will play the third of a four-game series at Victory Field on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when David Manning (3-1, 1.88) will look to improve upon the International League's third-best ERA when he faces Rochester's Brent Hoard (2-3, 7.41).

Went to the game tonight and can answer the question. Teut threw a 2 out pitch in the top of the 5th and threw his back out. The ball went into the net behind the backstop and he went straight to the ground. He walked off by himself but didn't look too good. Just wanted to update you guys.,

High Desert 8, Stockton (Rangers) 0

High Desert Site Game Summary:

STOCKTON, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks earned their second shutout of the 2003 season, by blanking the Stockton Ports by a final score of 8-0 at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton on Tuesday night. The win by the Mavs ends a five-game losing streak and pulls them to within 6.5 games of first place in the Cal League?s South Division.

Starting pitcher Chris Saenz (5-4), coming off his toughest outing of the season against Rancho Cucamonga last Thursday, was brilliant. Saenz worked six scoreless innings, allowing just four base hits. Tony Stavros came out of the pen and threw three perfect innings, striking out six of the nine men that he faced, to earn his first save of the year in a Mavericks uniform.

The Mavs took the lead in the fourth, as Froilan Villanueva?s two-out single knocked in Johnny Raburn to make it a 1-0 lead off Ports starter Jason Andrew (5-5)

The Ports threatened in the sixth, as Drew Meyer had a one-out triple and represented the tying run at third with one out. However, after a walk to Jason Bourgeios, Jason Botts grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the biggest threat of the night for the Ports. It was the third double play that the Mavs turned behind Saenz in six innings.

Stavros came on in the seventh and fanned all three men he faced.

The Mavs opened things up by scoring six times in the eighth. The Ports pitching staff issued a total of four walks in the inning, which all scored. Villanueva?s two-run single made it 5-0. After Chris Morris walked, Brian Foster?s two-run home run capped the inning for a 7-0 lead. The home run is the 10th for Foster, who is the active team-leader in that category.

Dan Boyd picked up a run-scoring single in the ninth for extra insurance, as Raburn came in to score from second base. Boyd finished the night at 1-3 and extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games.

In the ninth, Stavros continued to dominate striking out two of the three men he faced, including Jason Botts to end the game.

The Mavs send Dan Hall (4-4) to the hill on Wednesday night in the rubber game of the three-game set. Going for the Ports will be Justin Echols (1-4) at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

RHP Chris Saenz struck out 99 in 74.1 IP at Beloit last year, allowing only 59 hits; guaranteed he's the's best 7.61 ERA pitcher around -- he'll be fine - MassBrew...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Defense you don't see in the box score!

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=78

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

ROUND ONE

With a game lead over 2nd place Birmingham in the race for the 1st half title, round one of eight began at Hoover Met. The winner seems in good position to win it all, for the Diamond Jaxx lost again and find themselves in 4th place, 5 games back. The Stars have four games at home next week against Chattanooga, who have moved into 3rd place.

And they came out swinging tonight........ The Stars knew quickly Tetsu Foofoo had some sharp stuff tonight, so they looked bad on some pitches, but the law of percentages was on their side. They got their licks in early, swung freely all night, and it paid off in the 1st....... After Ryan Knox popped out to short, Dave Krynzel stretched his hitting streak to 10 games with a triple down the left field line. In his 10-game streak in which he's gone 18-for-40 (.450), he's had 3 triples, giving him a league-leading 7 for the year........ That matches Joe Xavier (Stars '87) for the 4th highest season total in their history....... After J.J. Hardy walked, Corey Hart lofted a fly ball deep to right-center, scoring Krynzel. Brandon Gemoll then came up and hit Yofu's first pitch deep to right-center, beyond two billboards, and nearly reaching the Hoover Met's monstrous scoreboard........ With Gemoll's 2-run HR, the Stars would have all they would need tonight behind the one-hit pitching of Matt Parker........

Parker, who waited a week to get his first start since July 17 of last year, has thrown 18 2/3 innings this month without giving up an earned run. No one since Scott Rose threw 11 2/3 scoreless innings in August-September of 1994, has any Stars hurler thrown as many as 10 innings in a single month without giving up an earned run, making Parker's string that much more amazing

The Stars defense took care of the rest. Without a doubt, the play of the day had to go to Krynzel in the 7th inning, robbing Chris Saunders of a hit. Krynzel made an airborne, do-or-die, made-for-ESPN top 10 diving catch of Saunders' liner in left-center, then later that inning threw out Gabe Alvarez trying to go from first to third on a hit by Carlos Maldonado. Alvarez slid right into the one-hop tag. For the night, Krynzel threw out one at home and two runners going to third....... With runners at the corners and one out in the 6th, Scott Bikowski hit a soft liner toward short. Hardy raced in to make the catch and whipped a sidearm throw to 1st base, doubling off Darron Ingram, who was late getting back to the bag........ Finally in the 8th, Knox made a sliding catch to steal a leadoff hit from Chad Durham....... These were all plays that mattered in a one-run victory.

Ken Ray made his debut for the Huntsville Stars. Surgeries in 2000 and 2001 on his right shoulder nearly ended his career. His right labrum was badly frayed, but the Brewers called him at home, asked him if he could still pitch. He said yes, the Brews gave him a shot, and ultimately signed him to a contract with High Desert near the end of April........ Although he allowed the first four hitters to reach in the 6th inning, he retired the last four to go out strong, and paved the save for Mike Adams, who gave up a run with two outs........ If Adams could learn to locate his fastball better, he'd be ready to move up. He already has a big league slider, as Scott Bikowski and Chris Saunders found out in the 9th. It breaks so hard, so late, a batter can only stand there when it's on and look foolish........ After getting the pair to strike out, Adams walked Gabe Alvarez to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Carlos Maldonado then hit a Texas Leaguer to drive in the Barons' second run...... With the tying run 90 feet away, Josh Shaffer hit a foul ball near the stands, but Corey Hart, feeling his way over, made the catch to end the game......... Stars opponents have outscored the Stars, 21-9 in the 9th inning.

For round two, Luis Martinez (4-2, 1.21) will start for Huntsville. Brian West (2-4, 5.75) goes for the Barons. West was 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA against the Stars last season, but 8 of the last 10 runs West gave up were unearned. The Stars pounded West for 9 hits in 4 innings on April 20 of this year, scoring six runs off him en route to a 7-6 victory....... West, a large guy who was recruited as a defensive end by many major colleges, is the #15 prospect in the White Sox organization........

Chris Cosbey's woes continue. He struck out three times in four ABs tonight and is now in an 0-for-17 slide and 3-for-44 going back to April 26.......... Richard Paz, who had struck out only 15 times in 117 ABs, has struck out 5 times in his last 14........ All six of Brandon Gemoll's home runs have come this month. He's 6-for his last-17 (.353) after snapping an 0-for-15 slump....... It's good to see Kade Johnson break out with his first 2-hit game as a Huntsville Star and his first extra-base hit, but he also threw out two runners attempting to steal, and those were his first punchouts after four failed attempts since he joined the team.......... Where is he now? Brian Moon, who was hitting .227 when he was released by the Stars on April 11, is hitting .175 for the Ft. Worth Cats of the independent Central League with one double in 40 at-bats. Moonie had 3 doubles in 22 at-bats when he left the Stars.

No official "Daily Menu" for today, guys, as I'm heading out until later tonight and have to run. However, all the pitching matchups / gametimes are mentioned in the game summaries above, and as for the routine, you're all familiar with that by now...

Enjoy your Wednesday!
