Gillespie, Manatees top Cards

 

Cole Gillespie went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to spark Brevard County to a 5-4 win over visiting Palm Beach on Sunday.

 

Gillespie singled home a run in the fourth inning and scored on a wild pitch by Eddie Degerman to give the Manatees (11-7) a 2-1 lead. He also ripped an RBI single in a two-run sixth and doubled in the eighth.

 

Brevard County reliever Ben Stanczyk (4-1) allowed one unearned run on one hit, striking out one and walking one in 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win. Patrick Ryan notched his first save, despite giving up two runs on one hit, fanning three and walking one in 2 2/3 frames. Starter Robert Hinton yielded a run in four innings.

 

Isaias Garcia belted his first homer, a two-run shot in the ninth, for the Cardinals (10-7).

 

Former Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter, making a rehab start for Palm Beach, allowed two hits, fanning two and walking one in three scoreless innings.
