Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS - Five Indianapolis Indians pitchers combined to hold the Ottawa Lynx (29-27) to one run on seven hits as the Tribe won 4-1 at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon. Shane Nance earned his first win in an Indianapolis uniform this season, and Jim Rushford picked up his first RBI for the Tribe in 2003 as well.

The Tribe (20-34) scored runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to give a 4-0 advantage for starter Mike Buddie. Pitching in a spot start, Buddie threw 3.0 innings allowing only one hit before turning the ball over to Ben Ford to begin the fourth inning.

Ford pitched 3.0 innings in his Tribe debut giving up five hits and one run on an RBI single by Steve Lomasney in the sixth. Ford also struck out three Lynx batters.

After John Foster struck out two of the three batters he faced in a three-up-three-down seventh inning, Nance entered the game to open the eighth inning and faced four batters in his 1.1 innings of work striking out two to earn the win.

Mark Budzinski, Rushford, and Pete Zoccolillo each had multiple-hit games for the Indians as Budzinski (3-for-5) scored twice including once on an RBI single by Zoccolillo in the third. Zoccolillo and Rushford each went 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece.

Zoccolillo's lead-off triple off the wall in right field in the second got the Indians offense going and extended his hitting streak to six games. He also has driven in a run in each of those six games.

The Tribe will complete the four-game series and eight-game homestand on Monday afternoon when they play the Lynx for a Business Day Special at 2 p.m. David Manning (3-2, 2.83) will face Rafael Pina (0-2, 5.11). The Indians travel to Toledo to play three games in three days against the Mud Hens starting on Tuesday before both teams return to Indianapolis for a two-game series at Victory Field on Thursday and Friday.

Okay, just back from the High Desert game, so I'll give my notes in bullet form. First off, the line score:

High Desert 2 8 3*

San Jose 3 8 0

I'm not sure how we ONLY committed 3 errors. I think I counted three by Villanueva alone.

- First off, maybe it's the bats they use in the minors aren't as good, but boy nothing sounds good when contact is made. Of course, maybe that had to do with the fact that maybe only two balls were really ripped all day--one on a deep drive to center by Santana

- I was shocked that the team only tried one steal, and Ernster was out by about 6 steps.

- Another general observation, as noted above, is that the defense was atrocious (sorry, that spelling doesn't look right). Santana made a nice play or two at 2nd and Ernster made a great play to initiate a DP by leaping into the air, but beyond that it was ugly. San Jose had about 4 amazing diving stops, while Villanueva booted 2 routine balls and threw high on another, Ernster charged in on a ball and its last hop before hitting the bag took a big hop and it went off his chest, and finally a liner to right took a goofy short hop for Belcher and he failed to keep it infront of him. One side note on the play with Ernster is that Kolb almost made a highlight real play by running over to the line and doing a full out dive in an effort to barehand the booted ball, all while having his foot land on the bag. Unfortunately he fumbled the ball with his barehand as he hit the ground causing the runner to reach.

- Another general note, our pitchers don't throw very hard. Maybe it was Foster's fault, but the only pitcher who could make his glove pop was Bystrowski. He was consistently hitting 92-93 while throwing a huge breaking curve that registered at 74. Others to throw in the game were Dan Kolb, David Nolasco, and Justin Blacksmeyer.

- Kolb didn't dominate at all, as it seemed the first few innings the Giants were stranding two guys an inning. His offspeed pitches seemed his strength. In the end he threw 6+ innings allowing 5 hits and a couple of walks, with I believe 1 run (not sure it if was earned). What stood out about Kolb was that his upper half and lower half seem to be working against eachother.

- Nolasco came in and really had a couple of good heaters right away that popped the glove (I think the radar gun wasn't working his inning). He inherited two runners, allowing only 1 to score. His motion and build are much more traditional for pitchers. His motion seemed pretty smooth, and he kind of turns a bit so that he shows his back to the hitter. He also has a high leg kick, so on the whole he brought back memories of an older Brewers pitcher, perhaps it is Jaime Navarro that I'm thinking of.

- Raburn and West look like clones of Craig Counsell. No, they don't have his stance, but they look like they could pass for not a day older than 16. They are as skinny as baseball players come. Raburn also showed a very strong arm on a throw from left to almost nab a guy sliding into second. He really tracks flyballs well, something I was curious about since he has traditionally been an IF.

-Foster was as expected. I think he had two very weak groundouts and then K'd, once looking and once swinging.

- Villianueva had 2 groundouts--one in which the SS went deep into the hole, lept, and in mid-air made a Vizquel-like throw to get him. He also had a soft lineout and a bloop single. In the field it was a nightmare. He had a routine chopper down the line that he dropped (I don't know if they gave him an error...home scorer I guess). I believe that one allowed the winning run to score. Earlier he also had a two hopper hit about 2 steps to his left. He tried to snare it off to the side and saw it go right under his glove. That was credited as San Jose's 4th hit on the day. If he gets in front of that ball, then there's no way he doesn't get the runner. And finally he had the routine chooper down the line that he bobbled then threw high and Ernster couldn't haul it in

- Just when I thought Boyd looked overmatched he stepped up and hit the game's longest drive (with the only competition being Santana's deep out to center) off the wall in left. He also was a victim of a diving stop down the 3b line.

- Jason Belcher really impressed me early in the game. I got there in the bottom of the first, and the first batter I saw hit a fly to right and Belcher came flying in to make a nice grab. I was impressed by his range and how he ran for a former catcher. on the day he went 2-4, with both hits being seeing eye singles up the middle. His final at bat didn't impress me much. Once again he hit a soft 4 hopper up the middle. The shortstop went a long ways to get it, then did an all out dive behind the 2b bag, took his time, got up, and fired a throw to first that beat Jason by several steps. Maybe he didn't run hard out of the box thinking he had a hit or maybe he just got a bad first step, but it didn't help get a rally going in the 9th.

-Ernster looked overmatched at the plate. That's all there is to say.

- Morris shocked me. He's tiny, but he looks like Popeye. Either he wears a small shirt or he's absolutely ripped. He hit a great RBI double in his second at bat that was a hooked shot over the first baseman. Unfortunately he didn't do a good job of hitting the ball on the ground. He had a soft popup and a bunt that got Raburn forced out at second. I'm not sure if he was trying to bunt for a hit or a sacrifice, but with his speed, he should be so good at bunting that the ball NEVER goes right back to the pitcher so quickly that he's able to cut down Raburn infront of him.

All in all a fun day in the sun, although I'm pretty red now. They sure have some fun promotions out here. My roommate and I are gonna head to the game tomorrow. I think it's at 12:45, so we'll get their ASAP, but class gets out at 12:50. We may miss the whole first inning. Oh, and the hot dogs are good at this ball park, but I was disappointed because they had Bud products and Pepsi products

Wow, DHonks, you must have had a heck of a notepad going there. I'm sure the players will look at your "report" as objective, but of course, it only points to one game, so everything is magnified vs. a 140-game season. Those who had a tough day or a tough couple of plays will probably be a bit uneasy with your assessments but then again, these are our first on-site accounts of a High Desert game, so it's very much appreciated. Great job pointing out the positive, negative, and in-between. Have another great day Monday out in San Jose!

San Jose (Giants) 3, High Desert 2

A possible explanation for 3B Froilan Villanueva's difficulties described below...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

SAN JOSE, CA ? The Mavs dropped their third straight game on their current six-game Northern road trip, losing to the San Jose Giants by a score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at San Jose Municipal Stadium.

The Giants scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth as the Mavs dropped to just 1-4 on the current nine-game road trip that features one more in San Jose and three in Lancaster beginning Tuesday. The Mavs are now 12 games under .500 for the first time this year, at 22-34.

Danny Kolb pitched six shutout innings, but was chased in the seventh as the first two Giants hitters reached safely. David Nolasco came out of the bullpen and allowed a one-out double to Justin Knoedler. With the Mavs leading 2-1, Nolasco retired the next two hitters, leaving the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second.

In the eighth, the Giants completed the comeback scoring a pair of unearned runs. Justin Backsmeyer (1-3) began the inning by getting Daniel Ortmeier to ground out. Juilian Benavidez then reached on an error by Froilan Villanueva, who was making his first appearance since suffering an injury on Wednesday and undergoing a root canal on Thursday. Bryan Carter then tripled home Benavidez to tie the game at 2-2. After a walk to Zach Strong, Bobby Bystrowski was called upon to get the final two outs of the inning with runners at first and third. Dan Trumble took strike three looking for the second out, but Knoedler drove in his second run in as many innings, with a ground ball off Villanueva's glove that was ruled an infield single.

The Mavs threatened in the ninth, but Villanueva's two-out single went for not, as James Garcia earned his fifth save by striking out Brian Foster looking to end it.

The Mavs took a 2-0 lead with two in the third, as Chris Morris doubled home Todd West, who picked up a one-out infield single. Mark Ernster then picked up his 24th RBI of the year with a sac fly, knocking in Johnny Raburn who also singled.

Giants releiver Brian Burres picked up the win by tossing a scoreless eighth inning.

Mavs starter Danny Kolb was fantastic, allowing just one run on five hits in six innings. Kolb struck out seven and walked just two.

Jason Belcher and Raburn each had two hits for High Desert.

The Mavs try to end their three-game skid by sending Jeff Robinson (1-0) to the hill on Monday afternoon against San Jose's Ryan Hannaman (3-2). Game time on Monday is 12:45.

The Mavs then travel to Lancaster for three straight before finally opening up a three-game series against Lake Elsinore at home this coming Friday, June 6th.

I guess just to put things in perspective...I saw one game. Tomorrow I'll see another. These say nothing about a player's overall talent, as I'm nowhere close to a scout. I'm seeing days when some players might be in slumps, banged up, or facing tough pitching. I guess the observations that intrigued me the most were general ones. For instance, the ball sounded terrible when it hit bats in the game today. That is, nothing hit the sweet spots. Ernster had a nice deep sac fly, Boyd hit the double, and Santana hit that solid liner to center, but it might just have been good pitching? Like I said, Kolb wasn't overly impressive, but he sure didn't look like a guy carrying an ERA of 7.00 into the game. He had some nice offspeed pitches.

Another general observation was the radar gun. When it did work, it showed most of the pitchers hitting about 88. Those numbers just really didn't jump out at me. Perhaps this was the so-called 'slow-gun.' Maybe the velocity didn't seem that impressive because of Foster's receiving skills (ie, maybe he catches the ball more softly somehow).

On the whole, this is a team full of athletes. I compared Raburn and West to Counsell, and I mean that as a compliment. They both look extremely fast and have the potential to fill out a little bit over the next few years.

Villanueva had a nice pickup early in the game when he threw to second. He just had some really bad ones (I see only one was a charged error). I thought our hitters did an outstanding job of working the count. I don't think they walked much, but I don't think the San Jose pitchers threw many balls. Our hitters NEVER looked silly up there, so that was very good. The team really put a lot of balls in play. I'm assuming the San Jose starter had a good sinker, because I swear we grounded out a lot. And I guess to also make things seem better for our defense, there were some obvious terrible bounces, so the infield doesn't seem friendly.

So if I sounded critical, I don't mean to make fans think this team is full of nobodies. This is a very athletic team. The outfield covers a lot of ground, and the infield contains four players with terrific range. Plus, I'm not sure we have a 3b or 1b. I notice Villanueva, Ernster, Candaleria, et al have all logged some time at those positions, so it has to be difficult playing on hard infields in extreme heat while playing positions they may not be comfortable with.

I look forward to a win tomorrow, and hopefully there'll be fewer mistakes that make fans cringe

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

DOG DAY AFTERNOON

The dog days of summer arrived at Joe Davis Stadium........ I know it's not August, but it was really a dog day afternoon as the Stars invited dog owners with their pooches to the ballpark, today, as a promotion. Before the game, the more well-behaved and trained ones exhibited their athletic (?) skills jumping over doggie-sized hurdles in competition with other dogs. The more passive pooches got to wait it out under the picnic tent in right field or the stands before they could parade along the warning track and down the left field line to the exits after the game.........

It would be a long wait, for today's regularly scheduled game was preceded by the completion of a game that was rained out in Mobile --- the last game of a four-game series there.

Mobile and Huntsville were locked in a scoreless game going into the top of the 7th on April 25. A pitching duel between Bay Bears' righty Brad Baker and lefty Derek Lee, making his third straight quality start. The General had allowed just three hits. Baker held the Stars to just one........ Both were engaged in the pitching duel of the season. Mobile had advanced just two runners into scoring position and the Stars were never able to push a runner past first.......

Before the rains came, Corey Hart had made the play of the game, robbing Humberto Quintero of an extra base hit that would have ended the game right there in Mobile. Ben Johnson had doubled into the right field corner and was standing on second when Quintero ripped a hard two-hop shot down the third base line. Hart made a spectacular dive for the ball and was able to stop it. Often that winds up as an infield single, but Hart leapt to his feet and gunned down Quintero to preserve the scoreless tie......... When the Stars came up in the top of the 7th, Hart drew a walk, but Quintero exacted some sort of revenge by throwing him out trying to steal second......... Mother Nature got in the last word, as Brandon Gemoll came up to the plate.

The wait took more than a month, but this game took one pitch to decide........ Gemoll pulled Chris Rojas's first pitch over the first wall in right field, over the Burger King sign, for a home run........ Although Mobile was able to get a pair of runners on in the 8th inning, the game ended 1-0 in Huntsville's favor. Derek Lee goes in the books with his team-leading 7th victory of the season, giving up 3 hits in 6 innings and striking out 6....... Brad Baker, who gave up just one hit in 6 innings, before Chris Oxspring came on in relief, goes away with nothing, as Anne Robinson might say........ With that win, Derek is in a three-way tie with Neal Cotts and Sean Fesh for the Southern League lead for victories....... Officially it became Gemoll's first home run of the season (he has seven overall), and it gives Dave Krynzel credit for a 12-game hit streak, his longest of the season.

The Stars made it a sweep, and gained a game-and-a-half over Birmingham, who lost their third straight game to the Diamond Jaxx, 5-2........ In an attempt to break Noochie Varner out a slump of such horrid proportions (0-for-13 with 8 Ks and not a ball hit out of the infield), manager Frank Kremblas made him only the 4th leadoff hitter he's used all year (Chris Cosbey 3x, Krynzel 3x, Ryan Knox 46x)........ All for naught. Varner struck out in the 1st on an 0-2 pitch and grounded to third three times. In the 5th, Bobby Scales ran in, but dropped his grounder and Varner reached first for the very first time since he joined the Stars........ The Stars can afford his struggles, though. They've won 7 of their last 10 following a 5-game losing streak........Krynzel would get things going with a double to center, following Varner's strikeout, scoring on J.J. Hardy's single to right. Krinkles has more triples than doubles this season, quite an anomaly......... Mobile answered back in the top of the 2nd. After a double to the left field wall by Jon Knott, Matt Parker struck out the next two batters, but walked Yamid Haad and Vince Faison to load the bases. Pitcher Cory Stewart then poked a single to right, scoring Knott to tie the game.

Parker had an easy time in the 3rd and 5th innings, retiring the side in order, but in the 4th, threw 28 pitches, as he worked out of a bases-loaded, one out situation. In all, he threw 84 pitches, the most he's thrown this season, 52 for strikes (61.9%)........ Krynzel made two nice catches in the early innings, but his first was the stuff I only see in the majors........ On a 1-0 pitch, Jake Gautreau hit a ball that caught the jet stream out to straighaway center. Krynzel raced back to the 405 marker and just to the right, leaped with his glove over the wall and made the catch to rob Gautreau of a home run. In the third, he made a shoestring catch rushing into shallow left center to take away a leadoff hit from Todd Donovan, tame in comparison.

The Stars put on a carousel act in the 5th inning, when they put together a season-high six hits in the inning, sending 11 men to the plate........ Mobile starter Cory Stewart was not able to retire a batter until he had allowed seven straight hitters to reach safely........ Ryan Gripp's single to center was followed by a single, a walk, and two more singles, the second on a squeeze play by Chris Barnwell. After Barnwell fouled off a first-pitch squeeze attempt, this time he got one down right in front of the plate. Stewart, rushing in, was unable to get a handle on the ball, and Kade Johnson crossed the plate. Barney was on, given credit with a hit......... Varner reached on the aforementioned error at third base and Krynzel singled to right before Hardy hit a high pop on the infield grass to Bobby Scales. Hart would single in Barnwell to cap the 5-run inning, giving the Stars a 6-2 lead, and essentially ending the day for Mobile........ Ken Ray gave up a home run to left to Jon Knott and, tiring, left the bases loaded in the 8th.

The Stars, now 31-23 and 3½ games in the lead coming around the final turn, send Luis Martinez (4-3, 2.10) to try and end the Monday jinx......... The Stars are 0-7 on Mondays. Two of Looie's losses were on Monday. Typical Looies losses, too. Six runs given up in 12 innings, but only two earned.......The Bay Bears send Roger Daego (4-2, 3.77), who earlier on May 9, was promoted to San Diego.......... The Stars were going to show off their road unis to the fans, since they were officially the "away" team in the suspended game, but seven pairs of pants needed extensive repair after the road trip to Birmingham and it's not surprising given the aggressive nature of this team on the basepaths. The Stars lead the league in stolen bases and attempts ---- by a long margin.
