Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday's Matinee:

TODAY: The Indians finish off an eight-game homestand with the final game of the season against the Ottawa Lynx. The Indians have guaranteed themselves a split of the season series, but a win today would give the Tribe the advantage in the season series for the first time since 1999 when the Indians won six of the eight meetings. Overall, the Indians are 23-22 against Ottawa since joining the IL in 1998.

A win today would also allow the Indians to finish with a .500 mark on the homestand. The Indians have had a winning mark on one of three homestands this season. They went 4-1 against Durham and Charlotte on the first homestand of the season.

The Indians look for their third straight win today. The Indians have not won three straight since a four-game winning streak April 9-12.

The Indians finished May with an 11-18 record. Last year, the squad was 12-18 in May. The Indians went 15-13 in June of 2002.

YESTERDAY: The Indians beat Ottawa 4-1. Five Indians pitchers held Ottawa to seven hits. Mark Budzinski went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Pete Zoccolillo and Jim Rushford each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander David Manning takes the hill for the 14th time in 2003. It will be his eighth start since moving into the starting rotation on April 23. Manning ranks sixth in the IL with a 2.83 ERA. This will be Manning's second start against Ottawa. He faced the Lynx on May 23 and tossed five shutout innings to earn the win. Manning allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five. Manning is coming off a rough start against Rochester on Thursday, and will be pitching on three days rest instead of four. The Red Wings put together a four-run fourth inning against Manning and scored six runs overall in 4.2 innings to send Manning to his second loss of the season.

BULLPEN COMES THROUGH: With a starting rotation depleted due to injury and a doubleheader this week, the Tribe's bullpen has answered the call. The relief corps has allowed just one run over the last 13 innings.

OFF AND RUNNING: The Indians have swiped five bases over the last three games. Jim Rushford, who did not steal a base in 117 games with the Tribe last year, has swiped two.

ZOCK IT TO 'EM: Pete Zoccolillo has a six-game hitting streak and has hit safely in eight of his last nine games (.345, 10-for-29). He has driven in at least one run in each of his last six games (9 total) and is tied for the team lead with 25 RBI for the season.

ATTENDANCE AVERAGE TOPS 6,000: The Indians drew 138,104 fans in 23 openings in April and May. That averages out to 6,005 fans per game. Last year the Indians averaged 5,657 fans in the first two months of the season. By the end of the year, the average attendance climbed by nearly 2,400 to 8,056 in 2002.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Tuesday at Toledo - RHP Pasqual Coco (4-4, 5.26) vs. LHP Nate Robertson (3-2, 3.84)

Wednesday at Toledo - RHP Dave Burba (2-6, 4.73) & TBA vs. RHP Seth Greisinger (4-4, 5.08) & RHP Tyler Walker (2-3, 3.54)

Thursday vs. Toledo - LHP Andy Van Hekken (3-6, 6.41) vs. LHP Travis Miller (2-1, 4.91)

Friday vs. Toledo - RHP Shane Loux (today) vs. TBA

Ottawa (Orioles) 6, Indianapolis 3

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians stranded a season-high 13 runners on base Monday afternoon in dropping the final game of an eight-game homestand 6-3 to the Ottawa Lynx. The Tribe loaded the bases in four separate innings, but were only able to bring three runs home on the game.

Lynx starter Rafael Pina (1-2) performed like a magician over his 5.0 innings of work escaping from the danger he created by allowing only a single run to score despite giving up seven hits and five walks.

The Indians (20-35) had a chance to blow the game open in the first inning when the first four batters reached base safely. A man caught stealing, and a double play on a leaping catch of a line drive kept the Indians off the board.

The Tribe put the first two runners on again in the third inning. Bill Hall's line drive was snared by third baseman Jose Leon to save a run, and Pina then retired the next two men he faced.

Pete Zoccolillo doubled to lead off the fourth inning extending his hitting streak to seven games. Two fly outs advanced him home with the Indians first run.

By that point, the Indians were in a 5-0 hole.

David Manning, pitching on three days rest, allowed four runs on five hits and four walks before being removed to start the fourth inning. Ottawa scored three times in the third inning courtesy of an RBI single to right by Napolean Calzado followed by a two-run single by Chris Lemonis. All three runs scored after Manning (3-3) had retired the first two batters in the inning.

Lemonis finished the ballgame with three RBI, and all nine Lynx batters collected at least on hit.

The Tribe scored its final two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning off of Ottawa reliever Mike Garcia. The Indians loaded the bases on an error, single, and a walk before Garcia plunked Mark Smith on the shoulder forcing Mark Budzinski home and leaving the bases loaded for Zoccolillo, who lined a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Hall. Garcia then struck out Jason Conti and Joe Lawrence to end the ballgame.

With his sacrifice fly, Zoccolillo has now collected at least one RBI in each of the last seven ballgames, as he totaled 10 RBI for the homestand.

The Indians play their next five games against the Toledo Mud Hens. The team will first travel to Toledo to play three games in two days at Fifth Third Field before returning on Thursday for a two game series at Victory Field. Pasqual Coco (4-4, 5.26) will face Nate Robertson (3-2, 3.84) in Tuesday night's ballgame.

I'll write more later, but it was cool seeing Mike Lindskog in action. He was at his finest today as we witnessed some pretty sad play by the High Desert MAvericks. I guess I'll finish this early summary by saying that they need some offensive help ASAP (also, Robinson looks good. his mechanics are clean and crisp...looks like a Jamey Wright clone in terms of build and mechanics, only take away all the flaws Wright had...like the loopy arm on its way back and the flying open front shoulder. Robinson also was regularly at around 92 mph on the gun).

San Jose (Giants) 6, High Desert 2

Borrowing the Game Summary from the San Jose Site for now:

GIANTS COMPLETE SWEEP OF MAVERICKS

The San Jose Giants completed a three-game sweep of the High Desert Mavericks with a 6-2 victory in front of 2,012 fans at Municipal Stadium Monday afternoon.

The Giants finished off the Mavericks with their third straight dominant performance by a starting pitcher. Left-hander Ryan Hannaman held High Desert hitless through the first five innings of the game before surrendering a two-out double to Dan Boyd. This was the only hit that Hannaman allowed as he retired the next batter he faced to end the inning and his outing. In the three-game series San Jose's three starting pitcher's (Greg Bruso, Anthony Pannone, and Hannaman) had a combined ERA of 0.86 (2 ER/21 IP) while only allowing 10 hits.

Ramon Soler gave the Giants an early 1-0 lead when he led off the first inning with a single and then reached scoring position by stealing his 10th base of the season. Soler was then driven home on consecutive sacrifice flies by Angel Chavez and Daniel Ortmeier. San Jose scored another run in the bottom of the third inning, and then broke the game open with a four-runrally in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Justin Knoedler doubled down the left field line to open the inning, Soler then attempted a sacrifice bunt but Mavericks pitcher Jeff Robinson threw the ball down the right field line. This allowed Knoedler to score and Soler to advance to second base. Julio Cordido and Chavez kept the inning going with consecutive singles before Daniel Ortmeier finished off the scoring with a RBI double.

San Jose reliever John Thomas entered the game in the top of the seventh inning and scattered three hits in two scoreless innings of relief. In the top of the ninth inning the Mavericks mounted a two-run rally versus Wes Hutchison but the right-hander completed the sweep by inducing a pop fly out off of the bat of Chris Morris.

Huntsville 11, Mobile (Padres) 3

You really have to wonder how much time will pass after a first half division crown is clinched before LHP Luis Martinez will be bumped to AAA Indy. This is his second option year, after all....

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=87

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

BYE, BYE MONDAY BLUES

A mid-afternoon front dumped some rain on the city, cooling off the game-time temperature to an unseasonable 67°. The threat of more rain and the fact that it was Monday, held the smallish, but atypically noisy crowd to just over 1,000....... All of the noise came from a section in the upper deck, occupied by about a half-dozen party people on the third base side, and while it doesn't sound like they could generate any enthusiasm, they were a joy to listen to. It was so loud the crowd mike had to be turned down for the radio broadcast..........

With winds blowing out toward left field near 15 mph, it felt more like early April than early June........ We haven't had what I would call a really hot, steamy day at the ballpark this year --- a few 80° days, but not one scorcher, and in truth, the ballpark experience has been more indicative of a summer night in Minneapolis than anything else.

Be that as it may, the weather may have been cool, but it suited the Stars and Luis Martinez........ Looie's complete game victory was the first since September 1, 2000, thrown by Derek Lee, ironically, a 10-0 shutout over Mobile......... At one point in this game, Luis had a 10-0 lead........ The last complete game was actually a 3-1 loss Dave Pember took at Jacksonville last year on July 23 and the last time a Huntsville starter went nine innings was the last day of the last season, when Paul Stewart gave way in the 10th to Mike Penney in a 1-0 loss to Birmingham.

With the wind blowing out to left, I was expecting to see more home runs than I saw tonight, but Richard Paz connected to cap a 5-run 4th inning, a high, arcing blast that landed beyond the middle fence just inside the 345-ft. foul marker. The Stars are now 20-4 when they hit a home run....... Brandon Gemoll capped a 3-run first inning with a 2-run single. The Stars played Kremblasball in the 2nd when Chris Barnwell went station-to-station, scoring as the result of a single to left-center, a stolen base, a well-executed sac bunt by Martinez, and a sac fly by Ryan Knox........ J.J. Hardy did virtually the same thing in the 3rd. After reaching on an error by Rico Washington, he took second on a wild pitch, third on a ground ball, and scored on Gemoll's opposite-field fly ball.

Luis broke the Stars' 0-7 Monday jinx, losing two games on a Monday himself, by pitching five no-hit innings for the 2nd time this season....... Although it looks good on paper, once again he did not look particularly dominating. Luis did not throw many first pitch strikes and was working behind on the count a lot. Mobile hitters helped him out by swinging freely at his fast ball, which was all over the place. He pitched inside the plate effectively, but not until the 4th inning, did he really start to look good, and you knew with the big lead the Stars had by this time, that he might pull off a complete game......... The no-hitter was gone with Looie's 61st pitch in the 6th inning to reliever Chris Rojas, who pulled a single inside the first base bag past Gemoll......... The infield defense was stellar tonight, paced by Barnwell, playing the hot corner for only the 3rd time this season........ Of the three double plays pulled off by the Stars tonight, two were started by Barney and in the 7th, he turned in the play of the day, diving to spear a low liner inside the baseline.

The hot bats belonged to two players who are on a torrid pace....... Paz had his first 3-hit game of the year and is hitting .343 (12-for-35) over his last 10 games, but Dave Krynzel is something else....... One scout recently upgraded Dave based on what he has seen, his reckless basestealing attempts notwithstanding. Krinkles also had a 3-hit game and is 7-for-10 in the series and is hitting .462 (18-for-39 ) over his last 11 games. Against Mobile this year, he's hitting .428 (11-for-26)........ But he's also on a torrid pace to break the club record for being caught stealing the most times in a season. The record of 20 has stood since 1985. Krynzel has 16 this season....... His total of 22 going back to last year put him 7th on the all-time list, past Gary Jones (Stars 1986, 89)........ Krynzel has stolen a league-leading 21 bases.

The series wraps up tomorrow with Pedro Liriano (4-5, 2.91) going up against Steve Watkins (3-3, 4.73)......... Martinez lowered his ERA to 1.84, now 2nd best in the Southern League to since-departed Tennessee pitcher Danny Haren, who is 0-1 with a 4.98 ERA for the Class AAA-Memphis (PCL) Redbirds.

Huntsville Box Score:

David Krynzel now sixth in batting average in the Southern League at .328...

Could some of you baseball experts help me out - I just returned from Indianapolis and was surprised to see that a player coaches 1st base and Cecil Cooper stays in the dugout.

Maybe that's the way all AAA teams work? Could this affect the base-running execution?

Could some of you baseball experts help me out - I just returned from Indianapolis and was surprised to see that a player coaches 1st base and Cecil Cooper stays in the dugout.

Maybe that's the way all AAA teams work? Could this affect the base-running execution?

This is quite common in the minors, I believe. Injured players, bench players, etc., man the first base bag, while either the manager or hitting coach normally coaches third base. It's usually at the discretion of the manager whether he wants to remain in the dugout or not.
